[Q] noob in need of help with fonts and rooting - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

salutations, my name is tater and i am a noob . . i have been a t-mobile samsung galaxy note II owner for a little over a month now and i recently found out i have barely scratched the surface when it comes to all this phone is capable of doing . .
today, i was told i could "root" my phone . . what does it mean to "root" your phone? what are the pros and cons? is it worth it? and most importantly, how do you "root" a phone?
my second problem is with fonts . . i have mastered the factory installed fonts and how to use them to change the appearance of my phone HOWEVER, i purchased a few NEW fonts and now, i am unable to incorporate them into the apps i have installed . . i would LOVE to use my "phat boi" font onto some of my images in the gallery . . does anyone know HOW to do this or even WHAT apps out there that would allow me to do so?
ANY and ALL help is appreciated
please and thank you

All right. This one is gonna take time.
To 'root' your phone, is essentially claiming the administrator rights to your phone which your manufacturer has shied away from providing you. In other terms, you can 'install' custom firmware or mods on your phone, after rooting your device.
There are thousands of mods, ROMs and even market apps which can enhance your experiance of using an android phone, and which would only be available to you after you have rooted your device. The risks involved are minimal, specially if you consider the advantages. Due to comparatively recent updates in the field, one does not even loose his warranty.
The method you should take to root your phone depends on your firmware, and needs. I could go on for half an hour on that, but as the subject is already well talked about, just check out this thread.

The owner is a very senior, reputed member, and a humble genius. He will answer any queries you might have.
Once you are rooted, even though this sounds like a cliche, the world's your oyster. You can find many fonts available here, or download apps like the Rom toolbox etc for hundreds of good fonts.
Use points 2, 3 and 4 of the above mentioned thread to root your phone, reclaim your warranty, and download great apps for N7100 respectively.
Do hit the thanks button if I helped

For doodling etc, there are various other apps available -sketchbookmobil3, sketchpad, aviary, picssay etc. However I think all of them allows you to write the text only with the fonts package available within these apps. In anycase, once you share an item with a particular font, it woyld anyway only be available to others in the normal font as the font package you installed is basically for your device, for your eyes only. For example, even though I write this text with 'Comic' fonts, you wil only see it with whatever font you have installed.

How everything works?

Hello to everyone!
I am feeling like a 5 year old child by asking this question, but i need to ask for some help because i am searching for about an hour for some answers.
1. So XDA is a site for changing the way HTC mobiles work? Like removing Windows 2000, and installing Windows XP?
2. There are various different developments by different people? Or just one by the XDA developers?
3. Is there anywhere a resources page, having all the developments for the phones, thus highlighting the best one? Or these can be found in the forum?
4.Is it easy to go back to the original "environment" of the phone, if i do something wrong? As i dont have so much experience...
It would be great to get some answers and understand how everything works in here...
hi
1. not changing the way it works, but upgrading, experimenting, improving and having fun (in most cases like installing a newer service pack, but also it also includes changing the system)
2. people contribute to the society, the xda-devs is like a gathering place
3. wiki (click my signature),if something isn't there, read the forums, and if you really can't find what you want, ask in a proper section
4. to do it you must have a shipped rom which you can download from here or from official manufacturers site, and simly folow the steps (check boxes and click next)
now feel like a 6 year old child, there is much to learn
Aaaa.... that is a bit more clear...
So there can be various "service packs" by different people...
That is why some say they installed many Roms... They install one they check it, then install another one , etc ....
Cool thanks...
Well to be honest, i a bit "afraid" to install yet such a thing on my mobile as i don't know if i will do it correctly or not...
Thank you very much for the answer.

Quick yes or no Question.

Hello everyone. I'm thinking on buying HTC magic, i've been reading a bit about the Hacking to run new roms. My only objective was to run apps, or unoficial apps. Do i need to hack the HTC in order to run them ? I couldnt find awser of this question i hope someone can help Thank you,
Regards
A) Your question really doesn't make sense.
B) This is the HTC Hero forums, not the HTC Sapphire (Magic) forums.

well first of all, you posted in the hero section.
about your questions, hacking is too much of a big word. better say rooting.
depends on the applications you want to install. majority of them you wont need to root your phone for them to run. there is an option to enable 3rd party applications in the menu itself. however, some applications do require rooting of the phone, for example wifi teetering, bluetooth sharing...
oh sorry i made mistake :\ but i think it would be the same.
i'll try formulate. I wish to download a pack of apps from the internet. I do not know if they are signed or not (not even know if android has that protection as windows mobile has ) . My question was if i can install those apps on the android oficial OS from HTC.
I Hope it was better formulated the question. Thanks again!
For example. i'm downloading this collection of apps: h**p://isohunt.com/torrent_details/148986681/android?tab=summary
Will i need to root or it isnt necessary? What kind of apps need rooting? Or this kind i do not have to worry about.
Thanks =)

from the list you quoted, you dont have to root your phone for the vast majority of them. rooting is required to access proteccted files of the system from your phone
alright excelent. Thank you for your kind help =) I was becoming interested on the iphone but after i saw android, kind of blocked my eyes. the system is great hehe. Thank you again =)
But downloading pirated apps is a good way to get your phone blacklisted & banned from the Android Market.

oh how is this detectable so far? why are they banning people from it? wont they loose money that way? If i dont root my phone, most apps i have on this list will work, in that way i wont get blacklisted? Thanks

Total noob question

Hey guys sorry to be a total noob but we all have to start somewhere. I have preordered the evo from RS and this will be my first smart phone. I really have no exp with aps or what these phones can do.
I guess what I am wondering is what is rooting and why is it useful.
Thanks again in advance. I apologize for my ignorance on this topic.

Rooting is basically hacking your phone.
It is useful to get super admin permission. Allow's you to customize your phone more and remove carrier app that you may not want. There is alot more stuff but I am new myself to Android.
Basically it's useful for removing crapware. It's kind of like when you buy a Dell computer and it comes with useless programs that may be really good but you find no use for. You can also edit things such as wallpapers and enable hidden menu options for features.
Rooting gives you literally UNLIMITED access to the software operating system on the computer.
When compared to a Windows computer think of your default phone as a Guest account. You can generally use everything but anything important can't be deleted or modified, which also prevents you from pretty much modifying anything at all.
Once you gain Root you're on the Administrators account, you can edit anything you want, move, delete, & in general do whatever you'd like with the device. Sometimes this can introduce risk to unexperienced users -- Think about what would happen if you deleted your entire sys32 folder on Windows...you'd break something.
That is the best explaination of rooting that I have read...thank you! Very simple to understand when put into the Guest/Admin scenario.
thanks ohwut that really puts it in perspective !
you also get wifi tethering and can overclock

Hi there and welcome.
The way I learned was to just use the phone as much as I could and learn from doing. Just explore really. But there are a lot of tutorial blogs and videos.
With your question, do you mean change homescreen icons?
If yes, go to the play store and download a home launcher. I use apex launcher because it has a lot of features.

It helped me a lot when I first got this phone

copletely and permanently disable/uninstall all wi fi and internet access etc ?

Hello , I know some of you will find this request a bit strange ,maybe even barmy .
I will explain , My partner has learning difficulties , she needed a new phone and was determined (as women are) to have a touchscreen model , I purchased a galaxy s4 mini, and thanks to some help from this forum have successfully rooted it and installed a good explorer program . my problem is that I cannot afford to just give her the phone as-is ,she only needs to be able to phone and text ,absolutely nothing else ,i dont want to just leave the rest (apps etc.) intact because i dont want a huge bill for apps updating etc and accidental internet access .
So I have set about deleteng the apps that are deletable , and turning off wi-fi . other apps have all been disabled and/or hidden .
though I have been keeping an eye on it and wi-fi seems to turn itself back on quite often .
What I need is some guidance on how to completely blitz the internet and wifi access so they will never work under any conditions and will be incapable of being turned on automatically or manually .
Also ,are there any other means to ensure that nothing on the device can ever "update" and use bandwidth silently ,including the device itself .
I realize this is the oposite of what most users would want and probably a "big ask"
thanks , Graham

Be careful and always make a full backup before attempting mods. You should backup that file, you may need it later.

Thanks ,but I had already searched and found that thread ,but I do not have a bcmdhd.ko in /systems/lib/modules. unlike that poster I have around 18 files in that folder ( systems/lib/modules) and some relate to other functions ,so I must tread carefully .
