fix for Google universal search and Google Now - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Yes, I have researched this. I can get the unversalsearch apk and get it to work on my Note but then it disables or over rides the Google Now search and cards which I like.
Is there anyway to get google now to do a universal search? or have the option of both? Another reason for apple to suck it....as I type from my Macbook
I am mainly interested in the search feature working like it used to where it searches emails, texts, music, etc
Thanks for any help.

I dont think google now currently works quite like the old way the goolge search did. Although I agree, I'd like to have both if possible.

If you want google search to search what emails, texts, music etc.. do the following:
1. Press on the search bar (this will take you to the google now/search screen)
2. Press the menu button
3. Settings
4. Phone Search
from there choose what you want the phone to search for.

It will be nice when you can have it use multiple accounts. I don't like having to duplicate events and forward emails just so gn will find out everything I'm doing

thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the only option I have to search emails is using the stock email app. I use gmail. There is also no setting for searching texts

Search e-mails

I am coming back to Dash after a while with Palm and PocketPC, so excuse my ignorance.
I tried to search the answer to my question, but I guess it is too general.
Is there a way to search for e-mails? I mean input text and let the PDA search for different fields. I know that PPC has a Search in the main menu and my old Treo 680 has even hardware button.
Any idea how you can search through e-mails and/or other items such as tasks, calendar, or others. Any idea?

depending on the rom you have on your device, you just start typing while in your inbox.
for example: if i was searching for an email about your mom, while in the inbox, i would type "koli..."
I am using ookba's 3EVO ROM and I just tried it and it works. But it does not work in the tasks or calendar. Is there such a tool, which would allow me search through tasks and calendar? Also, the e-mail search searches only through name, subject and address. I wondered if I could search through body of the message.
Thanks
SmartphoneFind will do that, but not free and it is slow at searching as it seems to be searching everything or searching algorithm is slow i dont know. u can try it for 30 days, from here:

I dont use email on my Phone, but if you go into the START MENU then TOOLS and then click SMS Tools Pack ... that has a search feature...I dont know if that works for the e-mails though. It is worth a shot...
This can also be access from the SMS/MMS inbox by clicking the MENU SoftKey and go down to (#8 ?) SMS Pack.
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice (I like when people spend their two cents ). I checked it but it works only for the SMS. But it appears to works with keywords through the body which is nice to know.
Anyway, if somebody has another two cents I am all poor in this department.

[Q] Will the Desire do what my Diamond 2 does?

I am currently using a Topaz windows mobile based phone, and thinking about switching to a Desire.
However, I use my phone extensively for business, and need to know if there are some things that Android will allow.
First off, I need to be able to access my home network with the wireless. Currently I use Resco explorer, browse to my server share, and copy the files I will need to the SD card. Is this possible on Android? Is it just as easy? I often have to do this first thing in the morning, when I don't have a lot of time. This is an absolute deal breaker for me, so I am really looking for some help before I commit to a new phone.
Non show stoppers but nice to have;
Cookie's Home Tab type display , which allows me to show my next 3 calendar appointments, and 3 tasks on the home screen. Will Sense allow this on the Desire? I like the Sense interface and widgets, so would prefer to keep Sense, but am prepared to apply additional software to allow me to do what I need to. (Paid or otherwise).
The ability to map hardware keys to specific functions (eg I currently have long press on the back key to switch off my wifi. Handy for in the car, when I forget to switch it off).
Ability to edit open office, and ms office documents.
That's it I guess. Any and all feedback very much appreciated.
1) yes you can browse files on your home network using the desire, you need 3rd party software tho also there are apps that will let you controll your pc and or device remotlely from your device and or pc
2) there are loads of calendar widgets on the marketplace im sure one will take your fancy
3) the wifi will switch itself off after x amout of time idle
4) the desire comes with quick office out of the box but there are tons of office apps so yeah
Just a small warning if you think to sync your mobile with the PC (callendar, notes, mails, contacts) via bluetooth - it's not possible in android.
Well, not entirely true, as there is "Missing Sync" in the market, but costs for about $40 - a bit too much.
So, try to love your usb cable
Or sync through the google things and sync your home stuff with the google things. For me it's annoying as I hate the google things, but it does sort of work.

Why would you buy a google thing-centric phone if you hate google things?

Thanks guys, you've convinced me.
Ordered from O2 for the princely sum of £285 + VAT, which I thought was a mistake, but it seems not. Be rude not to at that price.
Bit of luck it will arrive tomorrow, as I'm not working, so can play all day

You're not "sharing" with google though. You're just using their webspace to host information such as calendar and contacts.
Do you really think that Google have the time to look though all of their user's data, see your calendar information and contacts?

[Q] Dialer not searching ??

Just got myself a GN and I was a bit disappointed with the dialer.
With my old phone I could just spelling the name of a contact and the dialer would list contacts.
GN just puts in the numbers no direct search ??
Is it some option or something I am missing or do I need another dialer??
Love the feel of it just wish I did not have to go to contacts to find a number...
The stock dialer does not support T9 Smart dial. Either use another dialer, or use the google search bar to search for the contact you want to call.
Or spend a minute amount effort and tap the search icon in the bottom left of the dialer then start typing the name. It's not really much time wasted...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I also wish the T9 dialer was built into stock Android as it is with HTC Sense, Touchwiz and MIUI.
If you would like Google to change this, star the following threads in the Android issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
While it may not be much more effort, it is quite clear that this feature is available in other stock dialers, then why not in google's own?
I also store my contacts on the sim card and if anyone has noticed, then you cannot import all contacts into phone at once. You have to manually go through all contacts which again is a sore point.
I think that is a valid point to expect in the dialer, not whether searching seperately is an option or not!

Why not synchronise your contacts with google, so if you:
1. lose your phone.
2. Phone gets broken
3. Somebody steals it
it only takes 2 minutes before you have all your contacts again.
There are a lot of Contacts apps around on the market, and i bet even 1 of them supports transferring your sim contacts to the phone.
Earlier i used GO Contacts, but they don't support ICS yet. So for now im using DW Contacts (looks ok, only used it for an hour though).

Yes and accepted, but that behaviour has been standard all along. Rather than make me select one contact at a time from my hundred contacts, that one simple click would have been better. Anyways I prefer not to upload contacts into the cloud because
1. I may not have the consent of some of the ppl that I hold details for, e.g. bosses and they may not prefer it and
2. I personally do not know who or how this data is used/accessed in which case I would rather not. And personally judging by Google's appetite for gathering our personal data, I would rather opt out. Its just me....
Sorry OP to have hijacked your thread..
Correction - User error Apologies, I have just read the manual and it does allow for an 'import all' option to copy all contacts from SIM to phone.
To bad wish they would put that in its a very nice feature I seen no reason to be left out.
Anyone know a good dialer to use instead ?? Would love one with the same look if possible ???
Perhaps it is some sort of lawsuit infringement that prohibits them to build it into the dialer. I don't think Apple has this either, right? Maybe Microsoft has the patent on it.
3rd party dialers have this feature. In fact, I just install the MIUI dialer because it is just awesome. It is in the market and not listed under "MIUI Dialer" but "e9" or something. It works great.

I know from gingerbread that 3rd party apps can't clear unanswered calls. Some if the apps solves that by using the stock dialer list when selecting the notification.
Anyway its limitations in the OS and not the apps.

Am I the only one who likes S-Voice better than Google Now?

I know neither are perfect but when I give a local phone command like play music or a certain song S- Voice usually does it automatically. Google Now just always wants to search the web or make me scroll to a (tiny) button and choose what I want to do. Any tips to getting Google Now to "get a little smarter"?
I don't get Google Now yet. I mean I have it, I just don't "get it". The cards kinda put me off, so I haven't taken the time to explore what it really does for me.
I liked being able to press the search button (which my S3 doesn't have ) and Google Voice Search would pop up and I'd tell her (yeah, her) to do something and she would do it (usually).
Google Now seems a bit more complicated.
I've been using Google Now for a while now and I've found it to be very convenient. I love the fact that it will remind me when my favorite football (soccer) team plays a day before on the days I forget. It's pretty awesome IMO how it gives me an ETA for my commute to and from work without having to look up anything. It also does that for any place I look up (Store, Company, etc) with a shortcut to navigate. I was skeptical at first but it has found it's way to integrate into my everyday life.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I looked into it a little bit and I've come to the conclusion I don't lead an interesting enough life for Google Now to be useful. I (more often than not) know where stuff is around me, I have apps that tell me the weather and my teams' scores, and public transit is pretty consistent for me.
So there you go.
I can't really get the hang of either of them. Can either of them place phone calls or open apps?

There both agreviting. I mean try telling it to send a text message, damn thing just twist your words. It's making me think my spoken English was recently learnt through rosettastone. I end up arguing with it....

I use Voice Search (not Google Now) because the cards put me off.
Usually I'm looking to do something specific and I don't need a bunch of cards coming up.
I found that S-voice was less accurate and slower than Voice search for everything. VS will make calls, search, search phone, send texts...etc.
I hated on S-voice that it had to repeat back what it was doing....make sure that's what I wanted and then do it....the process took longer than VS by 3X.

Ditto here. I did find personalized recognition under settings so you can try that to see if it helps, and IIRC, you can choose the apps that it has access to.
I pretty much only use the (new offline) Google Voice search/commands, too, and ignore the Google Now cards, because they're not useful often enough in NYC. Weather and extreme weather alert cards are nice, but the subway and commute stuff doesn't really help me, and I don't give a sh1t about the new movie & sports cards.
Maybe more user-relevant cards from apps will show up in the future, though.
(Still, S-Voice sucks.)
The fact that google now doesnt have full control over the apps yet is the kicker. I think it will be able to do this and then it will be the king. But for asking google search type things its better than S voice, but S voice can control the apps....combine the abilities of the 2 with the speed of Google Now and it will be great.

Google voice is the best of both worlds...it has app control and it's fast on voice searching.
It's S-Voice without the annoying slowness and GNow without the stupid cards popping up.

Isn't part the problem that Google Now uses DIFFERENT commands to do things? (I just updated to the v7 version and I can set a time with the same prhasing as S Voice, but it actually sets an alarm for 10 minutes later vs S-Voice's bringing up the timer part of the clock.)
In S Voice you would say, "set a timer for ten minutes" and it brings up the stop watch and asks you to start it. (mine usually times out before I can say 'start')
In Google Now you say, 'set a reminder for ten minutes ' and it does set the alarm for the time.
What I LOVE is that Google Now can look at my calendar and where my next appt is and tell me (in advance) how long it's going to take to get there, reminding me to leave. This of course requires that you put the information into the location portion of your appts.
There's a set of 2 vids on Youtube with Google Now's 67 commands and search types.

Didnt want to make a new thread for this but since we are talking about apps and stuff announced at Google I/O. New updates for Google Play music and Google search are in the play store. Google Play Music looks COMPLETELY different.
It tried to verify my number, but I think that's a WhatsApp style link for others to find you.
However, my SIM reports my number as something else entirely because I ported a number over. So it couldn't verify me. Trying to talk to my network now, they're not answering...

This is transitioning Talk into Hangouts so it may take a little time for everything to line up. At first I was being directed to "Hangouts (replaces Talk)" that just said "open" on my device, and it looked like Talk. But then, after a dozen impatient refreshes, "open" changed to "update". Now Talk is labeled Hangout and has the new UI, but the icon is still Talk. Messages I am sending in Hangout on my phone are appearing in Talk in gmail on my comp right now.

If I'm understanding you right, you're trying to access Hangouts via the Gmail web interface. The Chrome Hangouts plugin does NOT replace the Talk box in Gmail. It adds an extra app, which is accessed by clicking the Hangouts icon on your Chrome toolbar.
The Gmail web interface will be rolled out later and will be upgraded from within Gmail itself.
