Tip for users on 4.2.1 with Wifi Problems - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Long time lurker on the forums, but my first post. I apologize if this is the incorrect place to post, but I wanted to share my findings in the hopes that it'll help someone else having the same problem
Problem: After upgrading to CM10.1 (Android 4.2.1) on my Verizon GNex [Toro], I was having problems keeping a wifi connection.
It seems that Google has acknowledged there is a bug in the OS (Issue 40065 - can't post the link since I'm a posting n00b on XDA). The issue was logged for Nexus 4 and 7, but I believe it's the same problem.
I downloaded the Wifi Fix tool from the Play Store. As per the Help file, I went into my router settings and changed Preamble Mode to "Long Preamble". After the router rebooted, my Galaxy Nexus seems to be keeping the connection much better. Not sure that it's 100% fixed, but at this point I'll take any improvement over what I was experiencing before.
Like I said at the top, hope this helps others who may be having the same problem.

Rebooting the router only works temporarily if you experience this issue. It will end up having a weak connection awhile after. I live with it.

It wasn't the rebooting that did it - it was going to Advanced Wireless Settings on the router, and changing the Preamble Mode to Long Preamble. Am hoping that it doesn't degrade after time like you said, but will post an update tomorrow whether it is still working well.

I live with it as well. Plus, i do not see anything about preamble settings on my router.

2 Issues with Galaxy Nexus: Wifi + Multitouch, temporary fixes inside!

Issue 1: Multitouch issue
- As far as I'm aware of, there is no fix yet and a lot of people are experiencing the issue. What happens is whilst in landscape mode, sometimes, if one finger is placed at the bottom left of the screen, and another is placed on the bottom right, it'll fail to recognize the second touch (bottom right). This doesn't always occur, but does happen at times.
Simple fix: Lock the screen, then unlock it
Issue 2: Wifi consistently dropping
While downloading files, or sometimes even watching youtube videos, the wifi icon will disappear for a split second, then come back and an error will appear along the lines of " File could not be downloaded due to an error" or in the case of the market, it'll just stop downloading and give an error.
Fix: Sadly, the only fix that I have found so far for this issue is to get a new router. See my post here I used a Linksys WRT300N
EDIT: Another potential fix is to change some settings with the router but I'm not sure exactly what settings are needed to be changed.
EDIT2: I've created an issue about the wifi issue over here and according to [email protected]:
Im assuming you are downloading huge files using WiFi... there is a notorious bug still unresolved on DHCP leasing time. If your route is settled to infinite (0 or ffffffff) a local timeout of few minutes is applied, thus the download broke and resume time by time because dhcp renewal. To fix this try to adjust your route settings indicating a discrete leasing time (i.e. 24 hours or 2 days) and thi should fix this specific issue (also noticeble when watching youtube videos, that may freeze after few minutes).
Hope this helps.

Hey everyone,
I have had my Galaxy Nexus from Bell for a few days now, and it is a beast Everything runs smoothly, no lag (even with live wallpaper) and helps me accomplish everything I need from a mobile device ( a hell of a lot better than the milestone - international version of the Droid)
However, there are some prominent issues throughout the device.
1.) The wifi constantly times out, it will stop working at random times even if im 1-2 ft away from the router. Also, when I was downloading SD files for a game (asphalt 6 - 524mb file i think), i had to restart the download at least 10-15 times to finally get it to download. Is this a hardware issue? Can this be fixed through a software update
2.) The multitouch doesn't work at random times. For me, whether its plugged into the charger or not, at random times, when you touch the left side of the device in landscape mode, the device will not recognize touch inputs on the right side. HOWEVER, if you lock the screen, then unlock it, it works flawlessly. I am determined this is a software bug (may not be though) and if it isn't could someone please tell me? Thanks. And a lot of people also have this issue : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385587

I have two question for you awesome people at XDA.
1.) Could someone please either post an issue to Google regarding these two issues or direct me to a website where I can post them?
2.) Could any of these be a hardware issue? Do you think I should return it and get another one?
Thanks so much guys,
Mosh
Would also like to know if the second problem is software related or not :/
EDIT: noticed now that my screen gets really hot at the top. Really hot! Does your get warm aswell?
Don't know. The easy fix is to swap it.

Both my touchscreen and WiFi have been working flawlessly.
I did have some initial hiccups with the WiFi until I power cycled my router.

I've been having WiFi trouble with the Nexus too - the phone generally seems to get poorer signal in comparison to my other devices. I've unticked this box, but it still keeps avoiding connecting (and when I go to WiFi settings, actually says it's avoiding connecting to my network because the connection is poor). It's frustrating, to say the least.
Rather than immediately assume that you should swap the phone, or thinking it's hardware, or (?).
What build do you have? There are at least 3 builds available for the SGN.

Seriously people need to stop making such a big deal of these separate builds.
WiFi could be an issue with the router. I had a problem where connecting Nexus to the router would cause both mine and other users internet in the network fail. Once I disconnected, internet returned. It worked on first few loads, then not anymore. Strange thing is that it fixed itself few weeks later.
(Same happened once with another router and when I was using HTC Desire, Android seems to be a wacky WiFi partner)

Not this. If its software you end up with another phone with the same problem.
You may find other radios help with wifi, check the dev section for details if you have a rooted device. Otherwise youll probably need to wait for one of them to drop via an official ota.
As others have said, uncheck the weak wifi option
In terms of the multitouch issue, just tested my device and can't see any issues at all. Could be software related as the screen itself can support 10inputs - be interesting for users on non standard roms to check and see if they do have a problem as this may lend some weight towards the software related argument.

I get #2 in shadow gun if it goes into sleep mode while i'm playing. Its clearly a software issue as restarting the game it goes away.
Point 1 happens to me too. I've tried multiple ROM's. I'm getting a bit worried that it's hardware. It's dropping every few mins when I need it... then it comes back rather quick.
You have any news or has anyone else experienced it?
I'm not seeing a ton of people talk about this wifi problem, so I'm guessing it's not a widespread issue. I'm assuming it's not hardware either, but I'm curious about it. Whenever I turn on wifi on the Nexus and it tries to connect to my router, it disables all other connections, and the Nexus reports that it's not in range of the router. I'm interested in what routers people are using that are experiencing this issue.
I have a D-Link DI-624, a free router provided by Verizon with FIOS signup. I'm using a custom password, not the one that came with the device. I have a 13 digit alphanumeric password (sorry, I can't remember the exact security setting for it).
Edit: Actually been doing some research on this, and it's appearing it may be a frequency / channel issue, that the phone is broadcasting at a frequency similar to your router. Looking into exact fixes at the moment.
I have no problem with wifi and multi touch.
But I noticed that two fingers cannot be very closely touched it will mingle together. For example if you hold shift button on keyboard it could act like normal shift (turn lowercase to upper or vice versa) but its very difficult to use shift + a
Also lots of games exiting on me, first I thought was multi touch acting up so I could accidentally hit home or back button. But then I think its just matter or compatibility of those games with ICS.

do you know if the latest update solved the touch problem?
Same issues here. On the samung version (dont remember the codename) i had this issue so i rooted and changed it so that google updates my phone. But this didn't help either. Still losing wifi when i am downloading. Like now i was going to download 9mm and after 2 seconds the wifi disconnect until i quit 9mm and then it pops up straight away. Can it be a hardware issue?
PS: before i change my phone brand to google, i could see the "avoid poor wifi connection" but now when i go to advanced tab it's gone :S
Ok everytime i try to test wifi in speedtest it says network communication issues after 2 sec of testing. Any info please? Do i have a faulty unit? going crazy over here
For what it's worth, I haven't had either of these problems on my Galaxy Nexus, and it's been on a lot of WiFi networks.
I've gotten speeds in excess of 20mbit/20mbit via the speedtest.net app multiple times on the campus wifi, as well as my parents', and my dorm connections. I've downloaded the Asphalt files twice without any interruptions either time, and I've never experienced any problems.
As for multitouch - no problems with that either. To type in all caps you can hold down the caps button on the keyboard and type - it's never given me any issues. I don't think I've been in a situation where I've felt multitouch hasn't performed right.

[Q] Wifi loses connectivity after period of inactivity

Hello,
I've searched around the Epic 4G Touch forums as best I could, but sadly I couldn't find anything that was exactly this problem (although I found some interesting articles about wifi sleep time but they don't seem to apply). I'm experiencing an annoying issue where I can connect Wifi just fine, but if the phone is left for a small period of time (~10 minutes), wifi appears as if it's still connected, however it cannot send/receive data. When this happens, the wifi status says it's "connected", but there is no data connection. The only way to to get the data back is to turn off wifi, wait for 3/4G connection to initialize, then turn Wifi back on to refresh it...then it's fine again until I set the phone down again.
I had this problem on stock EL29, so I rooted and flashed Phantom Blazer ROM (very cool ROM, but I'm still experiencing the same issue). After reading the threads on here about wifi sleep times (apparently they're backwards with ICS roms), I've experimented with every setting, yet I still have the same issue--Wifi is fine as long as I'm using the phone, I set it down, after about 10 minutes pick it back up, says it's still connected, but no data connection.
has anybody experienced this problem with this phone? I'm about to unroot my phone/go back to factory so I can take it in to a Sprint store, the problem is they (trying not to be offensive) don't seem to know very much about this device. I thought I'd ask the pros before I return it, get an iPhone, and have to eat my words about how cool Android is vs. iPhone in front of all my friends. I'm hoping there's a reliable ROM or app that can resolve this vs. having to just replace the device!
Thanks for your help!
I'm not the only one
I'm not the only one with this problem:
edit: I can't post links to androidforums.com or anywhere else, but this same problem is all over the interwebs and nobody has a solution.
I'm sure it's not my router as my ASUS tablet/laptops/girlfriend's iPhone experiences no connectivity problems. I'm thinking this is a hardware problem with some of these devices. I will unroot/reset to factory tonight and let you know what happens.
What channel is your router on? And what type is it A/B/G/N?
This is s known TW ICS bug, most likely kernel related. Almost everyone is having this issue and there is no fix until Samsung decides to repair it. There are quite a few posts similar to this one. If you're using XDA's search function, it's not very good. Try using Google next time and search XDA that way.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Hey guys, thanks for the response. Just before I unrooted/reset to factory I tried one last solution--download an app called "Wifi Fixer". It has resolved a lot of these problems. It's not 100%, but after testing it for a day so far, I've only had to manually refresh the connection once or twice. It's a lot better, even liveable, and I won't be resetting to factory afterall, at least not until Samsung provides an update. So if anyone is having the same problem, try Wifi Fixer, hopefully it gives you a similar level of success...I'm not super happy about having to run another background process all the time, but it doesn't seem to affect battery, and the fix it provides is worth it to me.
Cheers!
Huh - a couple of things. Noticed this problem crept back in FF18 and didn't know why until I went back and checked the wpa_supplicant.conf that I'm using. The line ap_scan=2 was missing; after adding it back in the signal strength is back to full and stable.
I'll bump the thread but it appears the config changes here still hold after all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569348
This should also avoid having the WiFi fixer there as you can specify the country in wpa_supplicant.conf manually.
Thanks for looking in to this! A couple questions from a noob like me though:
When you say the problem crept back in FF18 ... what does that mean? Is that something that exists in the "stock" version of the Epic 4G touch from Sprint?
The manual config file tweaks you're describing ... is that something I can perform myself?
Basically I'm wondering if it's "safe" to revert to stock in order to get consistent wifi signal, or if it's something I'm experiencing because of the ROM I'm using.
Thanks!

Galaxy nexus reporting wrong location on Wi-Fi (since jelly bean)

Ok guys so I need some help here.
Ever since I upgraded from AOKP ICS, to AOKP JB build 1 my location using Wi-Fi is completely wrong, saying that I'm in: "Edmonds Community College: Human Resources, Lynnwood, WA 98036, USA"
But I'm actually in Toronto, Canada.
This problem only happens when I'm on Wi-Fi. But if I have GPS satellite reception and/or hspa+ I don't have the problem.
Anybody encountered this? Any solutions?
It's very annoying because many apps required accurate location reporting to function correctly.
*I know and have searched, and read, that this is to do with the Router Location Caching with Google, however please understand that this problem only started when I updated to AOKP Jellybean from AOKP ICS. Prior to this, I never experienced this problem. So nothing has changed with my modem/router, and if my modem/router was reporting wrong location then surely other devices would show that too? (which they don't)
BUMP
BUMP changed router to rule out Router Mac Address... problem still exists.
My device is reporting location in Lynwood, USA, which is absolutely incorrect. Note: this only happens on WIFI

checking my external IP addess location reporting is accurate and to my exact town and city in Canada. Both on the computer and on my phone using whatismyipaddress.com
yet google maps on my gnex still reports wrong location..
I'm sure this doesn't help at all, but I just flashed JRO03O on Verizon GNex and am having the same problem. I'm in Chicago and with WiFi on, it says I'm in Lynnwood, WA. Specifically in the Edmonds Community College Library... With Wifi off it still takes alot longer than it used to in order to zero in on my location. I may try wipe and try reflashing since it doesn't sound like anyone else is having this problem.

Try clearing the Maps cache and data and then restarting your phone.
This happened to me once when we setup some Linksys routers with DD-WRT in school.
I remember it showing me the weather of Lynnwood in Google Now. Maybe there is a Wi-Fi from a router with stock DD-WRT settings near you.

Data and WiFi Constantly Dropping

Both my data and WiFi have been acting very strange the past week. Both services will show me as connected but I will only get the upload arrow showing on each indicator and then sometimes the icons just go gray. It has been happening very often and I have changed both my ROM and kernel on clean installs and I still have the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.

I started a thread here on a topic where my wifi and signal bars turn gray and the phone doesn't have data connectivity any more. sometimes this happens a dozen or more times a day and sometimes once or twice.
one response in that thread indicated that 4.2.2 made a positive impact on the problem.
I've been searching for a definite fix for this data/WiFi issue to no avail. I'm not entirely sure of when this issue began to occur but my phone (Toroplus) constantly loses WiFi signal. By losing signal I mean WiFi will turn off and on all by itself. And yes, WiFi sleep policy is set to stay on always. This issue alone made me go back to stock only to find the WiFi issue is present there too. I've also ruled out my router as the culprit. Im suspecting this is a Google issue. By the way, I talked to a sprint store employee who owned a galaxy nexus and after a few minutes of playing with his phone, which was completely stock and never rooted, I noticed his WiFi connection would turn off and on all by itself too. Any insight from anyone with knowledge to this would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion but that doesn't fix it. Are you not having this issue? What's your setup? What ROM do you use? I've basically used all of them and it never goes away. I'm thinking of going to the HTC One when it's released just in case it's a Samsung issue.
I have also experienced this problem, especially at work where the network uses some WPA Enterprise variant. I've digged through logcats and can't find the problem either. A few Google Code forum posts talk about a possible bug introduced by network adapter manufacturers, or wpa_supplicant configuration issues. Haven't found a workaround yet, so I had to go back to 4.1.2, which seems to be stable.
More info here:

The more I read on this subject the more I come to realize this is not specific to a certain device. The only common denominator that jumps out at me is jellybean. Seems like the issue is with Google, not hardware. Sucks that such a basic feature is not reliable out of the box. At least now I can understand why my buddy calls Android "buggy". Hopefully this is fixed sometime in the near future.

Official CM13 crashing on wifi connection (Nightly 29-07)

Dear XDA members,
I'm sorry for posting in this section, but since I'm new to the scene I can't post questions or topics in the appropriate section. So sorry for my noobyness..
Anyway I installed the new CM13 Nightly today. It is working great and even got the storage bug (gallery crash) fixed by removing the line ro.sdcardfs.enabled=true from build.prop (hint for anyone else needing this fix ). However I've found a bug that was stopping me from using CM13 in the first place, it was rebooting my device everytime it started up and connected to wifi... Whenever I connect to my Apple Airport Extreme the device crashes and reboots (just like the gallery bug). It is an older model Airport Extreme (the 802.11n version, so no ac wifi). It doesn't happen on the other router installed here, which is a Comtrend.
Could someone tell me where and how I report this bug or maybe even how to fix it? I haven't seen anyone else post it on the forums and it doesn't happen on OxygenOS or pre-official releases of CM13 based roms.
Thank you!

Btw if you want to use cm, you van use Arter97's build. That build with his kernel (you Have to add it manually) doesn't have the wifi bug official CM with his kernel also doesn't have the wifi bug.
Believe to have figured out the issue
I am having this exact same problem when connecting my OP3 to my Airport Extreme. I have messed around with several different ROMs and discovered that the original Oxygen OS and Freedom OS (basically a modified version of Oxygen) don't crash when connecting to the Airport Extreme. This has happened to me in two different places, with two different Airport routers. It would connect just fine until I first updated one router to the latest version for the Airport (version 7.7.7), and then a few days later the same upgrade with the other one before realizing that this was why my phone kept crashing! Problem is, is I'm not sure what firmware of the Airport actually worked with my OP3. I've tried downgrading my Apple router (generation 7), but it will only let me go down to version 7.7.3 which still crashes the phone.
It has to be an issue with router's version, rather than a ROM issue because this only started happening with me after the Airport update. Best thing probably to do at this point is report it to Apple, and hopefully they will do something about it instead of just locking every non-apple product out of their 'Apple Products only can communicate with one another circle'... I'm unable to post an actual link to the website to report bugs to apple, so here is the link in a 'disguised' manor. apple(dot)com(ForwardSlash)feedback(ForwardSlash)airportextreme(dot)html
I just typed out a bug report myself and sent it to apple. The more people that report it, the more likely they will be to fix it. In the meantime, I also requested that they provide me with the original firmware that the 6th generation Airport Extreme came with, because I know it worked with my OP3. If I get it, and it works I'll provide a Dropbox or Google Drive link for the download on a future reply to this thread.

It was a rom issue and it is fixed in CM builds after 18/9, I tested the commit before it went live. Don't use any kernel before that date and you're fine . The Apple routers are fine haha. There was a variable defined as a wrong type, which caused a stack overflow when connecting to an airport.

Flash newer kernel over it or just wait for a new build.
