Upgrading to 4.2 on Sprint - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm currently on rooted stock 4.1.1. The word is Sprint has begun pushing out 4.2 OTA. Since I'm rooted, will I receive notification of the update? If so, can I unroot, install the update, then re-root? If not, what are my options? I'd like to avoid having to reinstall apps, configure settings, etc.
I'm fairly certain I went through this same process upgrading from ICS to JB, but I can't recall now.. thanks.

If you are on stock rom w/ root then you should receive notification for the update but i really doubt that you will be able to install it. If you have custom recovery you can always flash the zip file that got leaked from Google's Server.

Yup I've got CWM. Do you have a link to the image by any chance?

*edit. Maybe I'm wrong. Is 4.0.2 the latest version with out romming. Sorry new to the nexus just left a dx2

If you did anything more than unlocking the bootloader and rooting you can't update with ota anymore.
OK. I thought that might b the problem. Do u know where I can get a link to the latest update?
Thanx

Yes, there is a 4.0.4 update. If you want it, then un-root, grab the OTA, and re-root.
Sorry if this has been asked b4. First day in this thread. Should I completely unroot or can I use the app that temporarily unroots
*found the thread with the download. I can just flash threw cwm

I have never tried the temp un-root, so I do not know anything about it.
If I had to guess, I would say that it does not matter which way you do it.
Someone with more Android knowledge than me will come along and let you know which would be better.
Yeah, you basically have 2 choices, unroot and go back to stock recovery, then wait for the OTA, or flash the 4.0.4 (or even 4.1) update yourself
Thanx. I just flashed the 4.0.4. But had to reroot. Everything seems to working great. Imma give it a lil b4 I jump on a 4.1 rom

That is not completely true. You can basically go ahead and flash as well (e.g. Jelly Bean) without breaking OTA.
As long as the files you are flashing are all stock (Android Build, Kernel, Radio & RIL, Bootloader), not de-odexed, and you do not permanently install an alternative Recovery (like CWM) and moreover take care that your busybox version is not known for interfering with OTA in some cases (like the Stericson one), you will be able to do a lot more than just unlocking and rooting and the OTA is supposed to still work if everything is done right.

Unlocked and have recovery...just flash the 4.0.4 radios and a 4.0.4/4.1 ROM. You are done with OTA. Manually flash updates or restore to stock.

Major Help Needed. So confused

So, I have not been a rom flasher but have rooted phones in the past and would like to get into flashing etc. Bought a international nexus used. Fired it up and noticed it said there was an update to 4.1. Went to installed and it won't install but is asking permission with clock world. So I figure it is rooted and probably has a flashed rom. I gave permission by scrolling down and it didn't work. It says it has 4.1 but if I factory reset it is not there and says I have an update. I noticed superuser is on the phone too. How do I get back to a stock ICS so I can get this 4.1 update? Should I just flash to 4.1? Any help would be appreciated.
Read the flash ROM thread in the gnex development section. It will answer all your questions. Its pretty easy just read the directions twice. Then read again. Then attempt and read while you do it.

So if the previous owner had flashed a rom, does that mean it won't take the ota update?

You can flash back to stock actually. Or install 4.1 from scratch. The Roms are available on this site from Google untouched

You don't want an ota if you are rooted cause it will break root.

If your not sure you should freeze it with titanium back up.
Check in about phone. If you are running lg1, that is the one that removed search. Lem is the release version. If you are running lem, just install/run voodoo ota root keeper from the market. Root retained. If your running lg1, idk what the update is for. Do a nandroid backup, flash to stock and update if you want to know that bad.
Got the same update notice this morning. Phone is rooted. Tried to install but it failed. Didn't brick it.
Must have stock (3e) recovery for it to work.

Can I upgrade to Jelly bean from Rooted ICS through keis?

Or will upgrading through Keis to Jelly bean from a rooted ICS brick the phone? Should I just go and download a Jelly Bean ROM and flash it through Odin to make sure everything works and nothing is bricked? Thanks.
Upgraded to JB via Kies without issues from rooted stock rom.

same. upgraded w/ a rooted phone. lost root, but re-applied quickly enough.
Applied update thru Kies on a rooted phone without issue. Whats the quickest path to re-root?

Presumably, if it keeps root like he is asking, it'd be quicker for him to accept the update on his phone than go to a computer, download the update and then install from there.
What I meant is that if he is rooted then he can flash any version of android on his phone and doesn't need to update with ota
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Rooted doesn't mean he has a custom recovery and can flash easily.
So in this case ota is easier.
And ota updates really are updates, which means you don't lose your data.
You can take the OTA. I took the update and didn't have to have stock recovery. I had to restore a backup of completely stock 4.1.1 because an audio mod was making the update fail. CWM also has a protect root option after the update and will allow you to switch back to stock recovery if you want.
