Odin Keeps Crashing... - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I've been trying to update CWM to touch recovery, and I used the toolkit to make a tar file out of the recovery file for the touch version of CWM I downloaded from Clockworkmod website, the phone connects to Odin just fine, just that when I hit "Start" I get an error saying Odin has stopped working. I'm using the "PDA" section, and am in download mode for the phone. I'm using Windows 8, recently upgraded, last I used it on Windows 7 it was working just fine. I did uninstall, reinstall newest version, didn't work. Also older versions didn't work either. I tried installing Kies to install any usb drivers, and still no luck. Anything else I can try? Thanks.

use adb or terminal emulator to push the recovery.img from the root of your internal sd card.
in terminal emulator:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
if you use adb do the same but use 'adb shell' first.
sent from my I747

Or you can flash the recovery.img with mobile odin no problem if your not comfortable using adb
Sent from the scary door.....

Hey guys thanks for the help! I did it through Odin Mobile and it worked. Thing is I noticed I didn't name the image file "recovery.img" which must have been the case because it was also not working in Mobile Odin as well until I did that. Didn't try it on the PC one. Just thought I'd put it out there in case anyone found this thread having the same issue and tried everything. :victory: Thanks again guys.

Try /storage/sdcard0
But if that doesnt work, reboot to bootloader and flash stock userdata.img through fastboot; reboot to recovery right after that, push rom.

I ran into the same problem, I erased my internal memory and i'm now stuck with the google screen
i have TWRP recovery but there is nothing on the sd card to flash from, how do i push files to the sd card from the computer?
I tried use the nexus root toolkit but i get "fastboot device not found" even though the bootloader says that it is in fastboot mode.
please help
nope that didnt work either but i found a work around. i had never played with CWM's sideload feature. FOR FUTURE GOOGLE GOERS
NOTE: you need CWM 6.0.1.5 and above i think
reboot into recovery
select install from sideload
make sure drivers are installed (i used the universal android drivers here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514942)
open up adb in cmd (hopefully you have adb in your com)
and type "adb sideload <filename.zip>" without quotes or the little arrows
and you should see it start copying
I would like CWM and TWRP for using this in their recovery!!!!!

Download Wugfresh Galaxy Nexus Tool. You can't possibly have a bricked phone after using that tool

Thank you. I tried doing that but it wasn't any help. however, i figured how to sideload using the TWRP setting. It took a little trial and error but finally got it to work.
i don't see how can you guys not get it to work through normal adb, other than you're using Windows, but glad you got it to work.
Glad to hear you are up and running again. Sorry i just always had great luck with his toolkit. Adb was always failsafe too.

Just a note you were probably getting an error because you didn't Mount the sdcard in recovery before trying to push to it.

I did a full wipe of the phone and SD card and was unable to see my phone in adb while in CWM recovery.
I run the push command any way and it did push to the file to the phone.
I push the file to /data/media/ no need to mount SDcard as it doesn't have a real one, in the past (while using ics) I have had to mount data to push files to /sdcard/

[Q] Flash Recovery .IMG without PC

My usb is corroded and I cannot connect to a computer to get into fastboot. I'm trying to be as careful as I can so that I don't brick my phone, but I need to update my CWM Recovery. If anyone has suggestions, or guidance, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
I have searched for this and haven't seen anything related to AT&T SGIII's. I have tried using Flash Image GUI, but it is only for Sprint.

The best answer to my questions was provided by BCSC, THANKS! Worked great!
Follow these steps exactly and you will have the latest Recovery running. You do not need a PC for this method.
1) Download correct Clockworkmod ot TWRP (touch or regular as you wish) for your device
2) Rename it to recovery.IMG and place it at the root of your internal sdcard
3) Download and install terminal emulator from the Play Store
4) Run the terminal and
type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
Be sure that you have typed the above code correctly. You will not see a confirmation. It is done almost instantly.
5) Reboot into recovery and enjoy
I don't remember the commands, had to do it about 3 years ago, but you can do it from terminal emulator. A Google search should give the results you need.
I don't use cwm prefer twrp which can be done from the goomanger app I believe it can be done from rom manager though.

Just use rom manager I find its easy as pie, just make sure you install the proper recovery

I considered TWRP, but was scared to change out of fear something would go wrong... I think I will probably go that route. thanks!
EDIT: Tried to use Goo.mgr to install TWRP. It downloaded and went through the process, but recovery still loads CWM.
Found this on TWPR's website:

So, I had a question. I couldn't really find any guides on how to install this if you already have CWM. I tried using goomanager to install and it would go through and say everything had completed, but when I'd reboot into recovery, I'd still have CWM.
My response, was to .tar the recovery image and install via ODIN.
Everything seems to have installed OK, I successfully flashed a ROM with it, but are there any drawbacks (other than the flash counter) to this method?

Thank you, I have a CWM recovery installed.. I'm trying to update it, but cannot select D2att from the Recovery Setup. It only shows d2mtr for SGIII... I downloaded the correct file D2att.img from CWM.com, but do not know how to manually install the .img file without using fastboot.

Does your USB port work? If it does, you can flash TWRP via Odin.
My odin doesn't flashes it.
I did all the steps that we should do to flash a recovery but when it completes my device stucks at the boot logo and then again i have to flash my stock recovery to get it back running.
Which recovery are you flashing? This is TWRP for the d2lte: https://dl.twrp.me/d2att/
Download the latest tar version of TWRP, open Odin, uncheck everything except f.reset time, flash, when you see reset" in the status window, remove USB cable, remove battery, replace battery, boot directly into recovery mode.
Not working
Thanks for the suggestion but i did all the same steps but not working i download TWRP officially but when I flash it with odin it stucks at the boot and then I have to flash the stock recovery to get it back running.
Just to confirm but the phone being flashed is an i747?
Why not buy a new usb cable?
Will this method of the Android Emulator will work for every other Android Phone or just for Samsung ?

The shell command referenced in the OP dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 is highly device specific. You would need to make sure you use the right command for your device, as you are specifying the recovery partition with /dev/block/mmcblk0p18. Having said that, newer devices which use the A/B partition scheme don't have a recovery partition, so this entire thread is not applicable.

[Q] My Gnex is bricked with CWM recovery

Hello,
My phone is bricked. I have no backup on sdcard. I cannot reach sdcard from PC either. I have CWM recovery but I cannot push files or install zip files using adb sideload. It is waiting for device. I also tried with Odin but it doesn't connect either.
Now It has only CWM recovery and no connection from PC. Do you think Can I do anything?
Have you ever used ADB successfully on your computer before? You may not have the drivers installed properly.
if u fail to use fastboot and ADB try ODIN, samsung phones are capable of a delicate system-phone flash .
Thanks to all. I did it with wugs necus tool kit.

[HELP] Failed Flashing Recovery via Fastboot

Hello guys, I have this Desire HD that I got from a family member. It was already S-OFF when I got it. I can't seem to flash a recovery via Fastboot. I already have drivers install, adb commands work just fine and some of the fastboot commands I've tried. It's not the first time attempting to flash a recovery via fastboot. I tried about a month back, failed and resorted to using apps like ROM manager, TWRP manager and 4ext Updater to flash recoveries. They all worked but this time round, I want to try CM12 (Doge Preview) and I can see it's flashed via TWRP 2.8.1 which is an unofficial version and therefore can't be found when using TWRP manager.
I was about to try something using terminal emulator to flash that recovery (usual Samsung way, and I know the file name in the 'block' folder at the root changes), but I thought it would be a wise thing to ask first.
I will attach the results I got using terminal emulator.
Please Help if you can.

I need help flashing a custom recovery to s4 mini GT-I9190

Good day,
I am having a lot of problems with flashing a recovery to my Samsung Galaxy s4 mini GT-I9190 and need help urgently please.
I have tried using odin but neither the computer or odin recognizes the phone when in recovery mode, I have tried all the solutions I could find on how to fix that but have come up empty handed.
Next I tried flashing the recovery using the fastboot method, when I enter adb devices it picks it up and everything goes great until about the last step when I type in: "fastboot flash recovery FILE.IMG" and the it says the following: "writing 'recovery'... failed (remote partition 'recovery' not support flash)". I tried solutions for that ass well but nothing seem to work as the cmd wont go further than that.
Then I tried flashing the recovery using the following cmd codes:
cd\
cd c:\androidsdk\tools
adb push recovery.img /sdcard
adb push flash_image /sdcard
adb shell
su
mount
mount -o remount, exec /dev/block//vold/179:1 /sdcard - first of all here the path is not sdcard but "/data/sdext2 ext2 rw,"(don't remember the last word), then it works and I can go on to the next step which is:
cd /sdcard - I can not get past this step as the cmd keeps saying that the path is not found, I got past this once but then it said the same thing at the following step
./flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
I have been trying to flash a custom recovery for weeks now because I want to flash a new ROM as the one that is on the phone is infected with adware and I also accidentally uninstalled the contacts storage, I searched how to fix that and all I got was to flash a new ROM.
I am completely out of options of methods to try and everything I search keeps giving the same methods that have failed me.
Please can someone help me with this, I would appreciate it so much!!!! I am completely out of hope and think that this phone is a piece of garbage by now, please help!!!!

Not an expert, but i think you should confirm that your PCs USB ports and data cable are ok and working fine. Also try other/latest version of
ODIN and run it as admin. Just my thoughts.

+1 to this.
What windows version you using? I've read a lot of issues with using windows 8 and odin. Also USB DATA cables can be a problem a lot of the time. I find they degrade quickly with little use, and a cable that once worked fine for data transfer can fail from day to day charging. The only time when odin has failed me was because of a worn cable. Make sure your using latest Samsung drivers you find here on XDA and remove any installation of KIES. Disable your anti virus.
Is this the first time you've tried flashing your phone?

Recovery mode? Don't you mean "download" mode? You need to be in download mode to flash thru odin.
