I am hearing some rumblings that the ion LT28at won't be getting JB through AT&T. Hopefully get more info in the coming weeks/month but so far it isn't looking good for AT&T ion owners. Only saving grace is that we can run the LT28i firmware which will be getting JB. I'll keep you updated when I get more info.

Usually when carriers refuse to provide upgrades, it's usually attributed to the unsatisfactory performance of the phone. Can I assume the same for Xperia Ion?

Unsatisfactory sales maybe but AT&T never pushed the phone. It actually sold real well at Bestbuy. Actual performance of the phone isn't an issue.

not that surprised about AT&T...the T just got JB 9.1.A.0.489, so we shouldn't be that far behind to get a generic upgrade for the ion as well ... I will be waiting for root before to upgrade

Probably won't be able to root just like any of the new system updates for Xperia devices but you can root a previous firmware then flash a pre-rooted rom through CWM. Yeh AT&T sucks for updates. Its a shame cause the ion is a great phone.
Wow. Horrible news. I bought this phone cause of its sleek design, good hardware, and the look of the screen. But I am sad to say I will never be getting a Sony phone again.
I have been very excited about getting bootloader unlocked but at this point, it does not look like that will be coming anytime soon. And now reading this news breaks my heart. I wish a bootloader unlock exploit would come so we could unlock the great potential this phone could have. But I fear it isn't going to.

Eh I think if Sony pushed at&t to send the update really hard they would. It takes two to make the update happen. The manufacturer and the carrier. All I can do is blame both at this point..
But that could change. If they are willing to keep such a mysterious device updated and help the developing road.

Docomo did this with arc so-01c, and ATT maybe the same
LOL
What I am seeing is ATT does not want something on the same level as the new device yet to come and the T. As was said they never really pushed this device in the first place and I am thinking with no update that is a good thing. With the Play getting official unlock after being dropped from carriers this could mean we will get one for the Ion as soon as ATT drop it. I do hope a JB shows up for the I and H though.

I usually get my phones unlocked, but the ion was only $25 at BestBuy when I got it last August and they were giving a $50 gift card if you were renewing your contract , so in fact I made some money getting the phone... couldn't pass the occasion... the AT&T firmware lasted only the time I booted the phone for the first time then it was flashed immediately to the international firmware and rooted... and it has been a solid phone since
But even if so would not the at&t version be able to flash the International version's firmware like at&t x10a and international x10i using flashtools if some makes and ftf file?

Thats why I mentioned this "Only saving grace is that we can run the LT28i firmware which will be getting JB" in the first post. Yes we will be able to run the LT28i JB update on our LT28at without issue.
Indeed. And yet they wanted to lock the phone under their carrier, but yet not even considering providing the JB update.
Do you know what time we can recieve JB update for Xperia S?

I wouldn't hold your breath on any more updates from verizon on this model. The early firmwares for the play looked, from tearing apart the roms, as if they were designed with both the cdma and gsm plays in mind. The later firmwares from SE deviated toward gsm only.
Because our phones are stock gingerbread, the only future update I could see would be upgrading the video recording to 720p.
What features are you looking for?
really the only things i really want, 720p video record...i like big numbers
the other thing...ICS no shutter lag! other than that, i'm really happy with the phone and still pleased with my purchase
I have a feeling Verizon may skip 2.3.4 entirely and MAYBE release ICS for the play when it is available.

I think you are probably right on that one and will probably roll 720p video recording into that same update.
Has Sony Ericsson given an ETA on when that comes out? I heard that Verizon is 2 updates behind, but I think they are more into major releases, which doesn't surprise me.

I dont think Verizon cares about updating software so much as they do selling newer hardware, don't suprise me either, that's how you make money upfront. Just would be nice, their a huge company and its kinda silly they cant manage selling current software on all devices and you would think updates keep customers so time will tell.

There was an update just published a few days ago. Do a software update on your phone under the settings menu.
i can't i dont have service on my phone. is there a way i can get the .ftf file for the update?
The .ftf file hasn't been made, yet. Oh, and don't worry, you're not really missing anything. In fact, quite a few people who get the update to 2.3.4 end up either reverting and freezing the update or switching to a custom rom after unlocking their bootloaders. Verizon broke a few things with the 2.3.4 update.
2.3.4 from VZW is a total mess and is completely unusable. Thank God I never OTA'd from 2.3.3.

It really was just horrible. Lucky for me, I got my bootloader unlocked and use AOKP ICS rom
The 2.3.4 update is awful except for game performance for me. I have to manually sync my Google Voice account multiple times per day making sure I don't miss an important text. Thinking of relocking my bootloader and escalating the issue with Verizon and try and get an early upgrade if they refuse to get the phone in working order.
So, we're still a pretty small group here in the Ion forum, and a lot of us are using BL locked AT&T phones. I bought the LT28i online, unlocked the bootloader and rooted the gingerbread that came on my phone as per the fantastic instructions by Spectre51 and yuunanase.
This is my primary phone, in fact I sold my Xperia X10 and Arc to cover the cost of the Ion, so i have no backup and nothing to switch to if i brick this thing. That said, in my situation, would you chance flashing the chinese ICS rom? or would you stick it out for the stock build for your region?
Simon
Nothing wrong with flashing the lt28h rom. You aren't going to see much different between it and what gets released in the next couple of months. I am loving my rooted lt28at on the ics firmware and international baseband. No issues and runs really well.

There's virtually no chance of bricking it, and if (on the off-chance it does happen), complain to anyone and everyone online that you got a defective product. It's worked for a few of my friends on more than a few occasions. Anyways, ICS is wonderful. I haven't found any blatent problems with it so far (other than when you first flash it, you have to go and change the language to English whilist in Chinese, which was a bit hard).

I think we can get clockworkmod full functional soon. Once that happens, development can really start. The other trick will to get around the locked bootloaders, but if we follow the steps that the Xperia S took that should not be a huge problem.

sorry to ask a very ignorant question...but i thought sony had given options to support bootloader unlocking?? they gave the processes themselves.. atleast thats what they did with the arc s. So the only reason development hasnt kicked off is because of the bootloader issue?
No, the main reason is that without a fully working cwm and without sources, it was just about worthless to make any attempt at modding. Now I think we have both, I have to do some more testing to make sure that my latest version of cwm is fully working and sources were just posted today so that is why it has taken so long, not to mention the lack of development support at this time. Beside me, I only know of one other at this time trying to help build stuff. (not to say no one else is). Yes, bootloader being locked is a pain in the ass, but I think we found a lot away around it at this time. The LT28i and LT28h can unlock their bootloaders without much problem. The LT28at has locked bootloaders that is harder to unlock.
I was hesitant to get the ion because of lack of development, but honestly with rooted ICS, this phone is awesome. I got it free, just like my xperia x10 a few years ago. I love xperia phones, so couldn't pass up the upgrade, i have no doubt there will be some stuff rolling for this soon enough, i had oodie prime miui on my x10, so many roms to choose from on x10 and i flashed atleast 100. With the ion i have a new adventure to look forward to.

I need / want a 2nd Android phone and Sony is the one Android I have not owned. One X is #1 phone but need a 2nd and I keep coming back to the ION. S3 been there Touchwiz moans. The only hold up is no ICS. No good reason from Sony not to have out of the box. Sales killer. Period! That must be why its free or $29.
Skyrocket tons of Rom's and Mod's and ICS update while back.
But I really want to try this Sony ION if I can get past the ICS thing.
BTW- Sony online - Out of Stock. Anybody else free on a two year contract? Can't go too wrong if free vs. what I've paid for the S3 and HOX.
Thanks for all the post, really good info.

I don't understand why is this subject even arised ?. This is a new phone just came out, it takes time to crack it. We have gone a long way getting ICS updated on our Own. Chill out, it eventually will get there - latest & greatest.
If you are *****ing about Sony release the phone with GB or not much roms or mods, then go with another phone brand. Anything wont change the fact it has an older OS installed and developers take their time understanding the code to crack. So make up your mind and Live with it - Better yet do it yourself - stop your winning.

Wasn't me about custom ROMs really. Haven't even done that on my HOX yet. Waiting for JB. I really like the Sony ION but G.B.? Really its embarrassing for Sony and killing the sales too .But I have two Androids as of tomorrow so I can wait. Yea ICS and Apex (only for ICS) work really well. But I can't wait to get the ION and dig into it. Also, thought I read somewhere that they just released the final source code right? So it can't be that long.
If I get 4.1 on my HOX before 4.x on my ION. There's a big issue somewhere and its not at&t.
That's my only real concern. Not much resale value as currently sits.

This is more true than most can actually believe. Ask any random person what kind of (Android) phone they have, and unfortunately...most reply simply with... "I have a droid" ... And to these people, that could be ANY Android OS based phone... Not the actual Motorola Droid, as we in this community understand.

It'll be nice to have JB tho I can't lie. Thanks for all the info and help here in the Sony section.
