Smart Stay Not Most Efficient Screen Timeout Method? Forcing Screen On? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Sometimes in poor lighting Smart Stay doesn't work. Wouldn't if be more battery efficient to disable screen timeout and Smart Stay and just manually turn the screen off with the power button when done using the phone?
My theory is ideally, for battery and ease of use, would be to have this combination (assuming you are diligent about turning the screen off manually of course.)
1) Disable Smart Stay
2) Turn Auto Screen Timeout up considerably to 5 or 10 minutes. This is assuming I don't need it to stay on longer than 5 or 10 minutes but still gives you a safety net if you forget to turn it off. (This is also assuming apps like video players are smart enough to keep the screen turned on - otherwise you would have to keep waking screen if say you were watching a movie in a dark plane cabin.)
3) Turn off screen when done using phone.
What's nice is even if timeout is set high to 10 minutes if you answer a call, screen still turns off automatically when bringing phone to face.
Second method:
1) Disable Smart Stay
2) Set timeout to 15 or 30 seconds.
3) Have some sort of button press to force screen on indefinitely, or ideally you can set it for a max amount of time like 10 min, like double press of power button? Is there an app to do this?
I think first method would be most battery efficient if you remembered to turn the screen off every time, second method is 'safer' Is there an app or stock setting to achieve second methods?

Guess I should try Screebl
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keyes.screebl.lite&hl=en
I'd still like an option to do a double press on the power button to force it on indefinitely.

Meh. Not liking Screebl too much for two reasons. Makes phone stay on while in my car or pocket if I forget to turn it off. But, if I am as diligent about manually powering off, it shouldn't make a diff, but, it will. Reason is, it complicates operation when you want to change a song now you have to manually turn phone off while driving after changing song. I suppose once I have bluetooth setup in my car I can have Llama disable Screeble when I have bluetooth car connection. Also don't like that there is no option to not have the notification bar icon.
In a 2 min GSAM test with phone just sitting at angle, it took 1% battery. Wonder how much Smart Stay would take. Maybe BBS will give that info?
Really still think best solution is to map double press of power button to disable screen timeout until power button is pressed again. That's all I need.

Getting closer. But unfortunately, there is no (hardware) search button on S3! Need this for long press of menu or back button?

Got it....
Screen Timeout Toggle
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chemdroid.screentimeouttoggle
Then for those using Nova Launcher
Settings > Gestures & Buttons > Long-press Menu > Apps > Screen Timeout Toggle
Now I can just long press menu button to toggle if screen is forced on or not. I'm actually having second thoughts about turning off Smart Stay though as I don't know for sure if part of the time I've been setting my phone down without pressing the power button! Guess I'll see...

Turning off an SX66

Is there a way to COMPLETELY turn it off? The power button seems to just turn off the screen or it you hold it down, the backlight.
I just got it, had it plugged in and came back to see (since I hadn't changed the power settings for external power) that I had gotten a call at 2:15 PM (it was now 8:30 PM) and the screen / backlight had been on all that time. I have since changed the power settings , but is there a way to turn it off completely, so if I go into a movie etc. etc. Short of Flight Mode, that is.
Best thing to do if you go into a movie is tap the loudspeaker, and click the "off" option, takes less than a second and is easy turned on again.

That's fine for that, but I'm also looking for a way that OFF is OFF. I would think that would be better for battery life.
Only thing to permanently turn it off is take out the battery, but you will lose all the settings and everything after 20 mins or so, then you will have to start from scratch all over again.
If you turn the button lock on, and turn display off the phone doesn't really use that much battery power, there's always the option of carrying the spare that (sometimes) comes with it.
ditto on what he said. due to the memory used by pdas, you can not power them completely down for long periods of time without data loss.

Activating Sleep Mode

Hi
I am not able to get the device to go into sleep mode (blank display) by touching the power button unless its at the lock screen. Depressing the power button does nothing, other than to activate the quick menu unless pressed for a few seconds. The only time I am able to get the device to sleep via the power button is when the screen has timed out (based on settings) and before the screen in unlocked, otherwise I just have to wait for the screen to timeout.
I cant seem to find anything that would prevent the device going to sleep via the power off button, any suggestions?
Does this happen all the time or only while the phone is charging, as there is a setting that keeps the screen awake while the phone is charging:
Settings>Applications>Development
happens all the time, and I am aware of the stay awake feature during charging
If you're using a custom rom it may have something to do with that. Maybe the key isn't mapped or set correctly. Other then that, that's a pretty odd issues.

Sounds like some buggy program is keeping a wake_lock longer than it should. (The way games and ebook readers keep the screen lit/phone awake).
Had you installed anything new before this started?

Calls being dismissed by lock screen.

Hello,
Loving my desire but this problem is really annoying,
Every time I take the phone out of my pocket it's slide the phone upwards so the call is being dismissed.
Any chance I can change that?
I'm running a rooted phone.
Thanks.
I agree on this, It's quite annoying.
I've seen some apps that change the lockscreen, but most of them consume memory and/or a lot of battery power. A free app would be preferred.
why isnt your screen off? when you go to put the desire in your pocket press the power button on the device quickly and it will turn your screen off and also lock it, there is no need to have the screen on whilst in your pocket is there? this is also power saving on your phone, hitting the power button again will then switch it to the lock screen once you have taken it out of your pocket.

This is when a call comes in. When a call comes on the phone wakes from sleep mode.

[Q] Screen lock without having to use power on/off button

Hi,
I have spent the last few days seraching and downloading and trying apps, but have not yet found one that does what I want.
I want an app that will allow me to lock the screen (by tapping on the app shortcut on home screen), the screen can then ONLY be unlocked using a password/passcode/slide or similar control (i.e. unlikely to be unlocked in your pocket) and where the screen will NOT switch off - therefore not requiring the use of the power button to turn it back on.
Preferably, the screen would dim after a pre-determined time to save on battery power, maybe even dimming to black (off, but without having to use power on to switch back on).
I have tried numerous apps including Screen Off, No Lock, Screen Off and Lock, Lock Screen Widget and most recently WidgetLocker.
None of these (as far as I can see), do what I want.
WidgetLocker appeared to come closest, but still the screen timeouts and switches off requiring the power button to turn it back on. Also, it defaults to 'Tool mode' which then necessitates another tap to action 'Lock mode'. Also, when in 'Lock mode', if the notification bar is dragged down, this then activates the screen and hard buttons.
Any one know of something that fits my fairly specific requirements.
So this is not possible!!
Do I presume from the lack of response that it is not possible to leave the screen on but with some kind of passcode/swipe protection, and that everyone uses the power on/off button to turn the screen off when not in use and then back on again when needed?
I have tried using Keepscreen to avoid the screen timeout function, but this only works when other applications are running.

[Q] Power button Always Locks since 4.1

Anyone experiencing this? I had the setting to be 30 minutes of idle would lock the phone (using the pattern lock).
After 4.1 my phone now locks whenever I use the power button with the same 30 minute idle setting. It's really annoying and defeats the purpose of having a timer lock the phone. The only option would be to let the phone screen timer idle out every time.
Not sure why this would change or if my phone is bugged.
There's a setting (in Security if memory serves) to lock the phone instantly if the power button is used. Did that get set during the update, perhaps?

that options doesn't seem to have its own setting any more. It is however built into the lock screen timer - the top option is to have it lock at idle out or power button. From there it goes down in increments like 1m, 2m, 5m, 20m, 30m.
I have it set to 30minutes and also checked the security options - there isn't a separate option to lock with power button that I can find anymore.
