Reasons not to go back to ICS? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So in thinking of gong back to ICS 4.0 just because it had incredible battery life. I'm currently on CM 10.1 and don't get great battery life.
I don't need performance as much add I do battery. Are there any real reasons I shouldn't go back, i.e. bugs, exploits, etc?

Jellybean features that I use (Not sure how many can be ported over using just Gapps):
1. Expandable notifications
2. Lockscreen widgets
3. Photosphere
4. Google Now
5. Resizeable widgets
It maybe really a matter of preference if you don't use any of these.

Ya. I'm using Trinity's kernel
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

I doubt your battery life will still be that great. You also have to consider the battery likely has decreased max capacity due to discharge cycles.
The new power saving patches in kernels such as Faux123's really improved my battery life on 4.2. Also disabling Google Now can help immensely if you haven't already done it.

try using AK, link is in my sig, i get great battery lfie with it.. but the thing is all devices are different so whats good for me wont necessarily be good for others, thats why you should try different kernels, different settings, etc...
If after trying everything your battery doesnt get better than go back to 4.1.2(dont go to ICS lol) and wait for 4.2.2., you kight be pne of those unlucky users who are gettings horrible results with 4.2.1
PS- btw this thread should be in the Q&A section and not in the general section :good:

One thing that I like on ICS is the easter egg and and the name!
Doesn't ICS have the butter vsync thing like JB has?..

I think it's just the fact that all users had brand new batteries on ICS. A year of charging cycles really decreases battery capacity. At least by 5 to 10%.

the best battery life i have ever had on the gnex was with cm 10.0.0...btw, i did not recognize any reduction of battery on the way from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2, if i think about it...but must admit also, that i never updated to 4.2.x, so i cannot say anything about that.
anyway, cm 10.0.0, no kernel changement -> amazing for me!

Agreed with this guy. Also, I don't recall it being mentioned in this thread (unless I missed it), but with JB you also get voice to text working offline. You can also download parts of Google Maps and use them without data (useful if going somewhere with no reception and you need to use GPS).

These threads are a waste of time. You will not get the same results as others since no one uses their phone the same as you. There are different settings for gamers, people in low signal areas, people that only web browse, people that only use their phone for calls and texts...all different cases as well as the differences between syncs, apps and the cut of the processor die... all change performance. Best is what is best FOR YOU. You just need to try different combinations/

If you want the latest software, most stable, and best battery life ROM, go with MMuzzy's AOSP ROM. Using it now, and its amazing
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
ROMs themselves rarely ever have an actual impact on battery life. Most postive effects for battery come from the kernel, and negative ones from rogue apps.
Before you ask which kernel offers the best battery, it really depends on the requirements of the user and the phone itself. You'll just have to try a few.

Flash kernel in cwm the same as you would have a rom. Be sure to clear cache/dalvik first.

I've tried many ROMs and Kernels with no success in the battery life department.
My phone charger died so I downloaded an app...Easy Battery Saver...my phone was still at 34% after 1 day and 7 hours. I was NOT heavily using my phone but still this is the best battery life I have ever experienced. I was always on the "battery saver apps are useless" team until recently.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still flashing
Just love my new app.

Hmm.. thats strange. I'm on MMuzzy's ROM which is pure AOSP and I get around 2 and a half hours of screen time. And some people around the forums have gotten around 5 hours of screen time with different combinations of ROMS and Kernels.
I have tried numerous roms, if not all of them for the galaxy nexus, and there is a difference between roms, even using the same kernel.
I have been getting amazing battery life using Eclipse.

The mods can move this thread, but in the mean time, it is a good question.
I used to get some awesome battery life. VZW + 2100mah. Typically 4 hours screen on time was normal.... now I'm lucky to get 1hr. I can't remember if it was the jelly bean update or the inclusion of Google Now.
Does letting the ROM settle really help? I have been getting terrible battery life out of my 2100mah. The battery just drains when the screen is off. No rogue apps, but this is a fresh install as of 24 hours ago

I wasn't going to put my 2 cents in but because there are so many complaints about this being in the wrong place, I just have to now.
I have tried many different ROM's and kernels and found there always seems to be the "right" combination sooner or later. Right now I am on AOKP w/Franco M6 and getting about 14 hours with 24% battery left, 2.5 hours screen time, mostly LTE and moderate phone use, best I have seen of any combo for me on this ROM. For CNA the right kernel for me was lean kernel. A little experimentation and patience and you will find that sweet spot soon enough.
Edit: the whining drew me to it, sucked me in so I couldn't stop myself from answering
If someone can get 4+ hours screen with mostly 3G, let me know. haha.
Wrong section
However as for battery life slim ROMs work great but I'm on jbsourcery built in trinity and I've definitely had worse d: the only ROM I've used that's had has battery is pa however they've had multiple updates since then so I'm sure its not horrible now

2) If you guys see something posted in the wrong section, report it. No need to get in an internet gang war about it. Us mods have a life too and we can not be here 24 hrs a day to watch over you. When you hit the report button, we see it.

4.1.2 improved battery life

After receiving the 4.1.2 OTA update, I'm getting a much better battery life.
It used to be dead at the end of the day. Now, I finish my day and the battrey is on 45% with the same phone use.
I also find that apps and mostly google apps do launch faster
Have you also noticed it?

To add on to this. I'm noticing FAR fewer wakeups (alarms) caused by Maps services on 4.1.2. That has an impact regardless of whether or not Google Now is running.
They definitely made some changes to location based services considering the menus were modified and additional settings were added.
Using a custom ROM and kernel so I can't answer this. But my battery life using CM10 + Franco Kernel has definitely improved.

I logged in hoping someone had made a topic about this. On 4.1.1 I did not use Google Now because of the effect on battery life it caused. I tried it on 4.1.2 hoping it had improved. In my opinion it did. Still need more days to test but it seems way better now. Even saying that, I still feel it takes too much of a hit on battery for me to continue using it.

That's how it should be but in reality it's not. Sammy roms have much better battery life but then again that could just be because there are better power and memory management features on stock. It's the only reason I've been reverting back to stock since almost every other cm10.1 based roms have ridiculously weak battery life.

Not really. Battery life is awesome at is on stock. You could flash some kernel like Perseus and do some undervolting or even underclocking to
squeeze more battery out of it though.

I actually ended up going back to stock based Rom. The battery life wasn't as bad as I had thought, it got me about 6hours screen time. Don't get me wrong MIUI really looks gorgeous but at the expense of performance, especially at this stage since there's quite a few bugs that needs ironing out and also because MIUI and xposed framework use the same setup they are incompatible and I'm use to lower DPI. I might get back with signs of improvements.
Also, I found that Perseus kernel is not compatible with aosp and that so far the one that does work is neak and redpill.

AOSP isn't as good as stock for battery life (a shame, but fair enough) - but how good have you guys managed to get it? What kernels, roms and tweaks are you running and what do you get as a result?

Maybe because Touchwiz is laggy and ugly?
Anyway, the problem isn't the screen on time, but the total battery life. In standby, Note 2 with AOSP roms seems to have some processes on that totally eat the battery.
In my case, i switched back to Touchwiz. I've definitely want a 2-day battery life, and with AOSP is still not possible, unless you don't use the phone.

Because on 4.2.2 I can use dashclock on my touchscreen, I can have easily accessible quicksettings which don't take up space in my notification drawer, I can turn off the backlight for the hardware buttons and have a navbar with far more functionality, with paranoid android I can have the navbar and status bar change colour to match the app (which will also reduce status bar burn in), with rootbox/aokp I can have the status bar hide away until I either swipe it down myself or get a notification, and my phone still lasts me an entire day of my usage. I don't lose any features I didn't use in the first place, so it'd be silly not to be on AOSP in my case.
