So I am ready for a new phone and I was thinking the LG Optimus G. It all seems so good but then you look at the camera and video quality. The sooner we all realize the megapixel is not everything. If you have a ****y painter it doesnt matter how big the canvas is!!!
So my questions. How much does software have to do with the ability to pick up low light and take nice video? The GS3 clearly tramples upon the LG Optimus G and I was wondering if it is hardware or software?
Is there any software I can buy that will make LGs camera better?
The camera on optimus G is not good. I believe even my Galaxy nexus take better picture, and everyone know the gnex doesnt take good pic. There is simply so much noise in the pic that it's aweful.
The camera is good. It's the software that sucks. Their is already fixes by Epic.

Exactly, the software blows for managing ISO's
If you set it to a manual ISO, you can get amazing pictures. But with "Auto", it's grainy and not good at all.
Example:
This is with auto ISO

Same place, same lightings, a word of difference.
I've already noticed LG with this issue, I don't know if they will fix it :|

The fix is for the autofocus?
Hah, actually i gonna say the "auto" photo is awful, the "manual" one just terrible.

I believe thats a software problem. Cause video capture working very well (At least i think so), but the photo is unbelievably terrible.

They both look bad to me also.
Unfortunately both of those pictures are not up to par as what I am looking for.

Here is a REALLY good review of both phones. The link above starts at 7:56 which is where the camera review starts. This is a true review most reviews do not test everything, such as low light!!!
Yeah, does look better on S3, I'm curious if LG will try to fix what's wrong with the camera software.
Anyone on JB or running a custom rom care to share some pictures?

Is this a software problem? 5mbpx and 8mbpx shouldn't be this huge of a difference.
Did you let it focus? I've taken fantastic pictures.

Yup, manual focus by touching on "Toast".

What exactly is your problem with those pictures?
Focus point is different in both pictures btw, the darker pic has it on the "Lenovo" and the lighter picture in front of the cup, I think.
Both really. The camera module isn't all that great and better software makes a difference. I rested the MIUI camera software, camera FX and stock and stock software was by far the worst. That being said my old incredible took better pictures overall with the MIUI app.

Taking a picture of a scene with a lot of black and white can confuse the metering system of camera every easily. You would need to frame exactly the same scene to compare them. The camera is trying to average the whole frame to 18% grey, so if you have a lot of black in the scene, then black part will be closer to grey than black. A lot of white part will also be closer to grey than white.
From sample pictures I've seen GN's camera seems to lack some contrast, but gets more details out of darker area than other cameras, which also induces more noise in a poor lighting situation.
Not sure if this will do justice, hope it's not too compressed.

I think this picture also shows what I said. It shows more details from shadow areas than pictures from other phone cameras, but because of that it appears to be lack of contrast (washout look if you will). I think it's definitely correctable via software if they choose to do it.

thanks static and koolbon i think you might have nailed it. i will do another test on dark and light - this time letting the camera meter the same way as the NS. in my first test, the GN metering/focus was on the cup.
its hard to take the exact same frame, NS had the camera offset from centre.
My phone officially replaced my point and shoot camera.

Dude it's a phone, the pictures are fantastic for a phone camera and there's a lot of shots which are very good as shown in the pictures in this thread and other threads
If you want a good camera and want to be able to not have any drawbacks, I recommend a DLSR
Or use photo shop to fix any photos maybe
nice pics!
The first two pics and the last one look pretty decent. The others are way too noisy though. Looks like the ISO was a bit high, that or the Digital Zoom has been used. Personal opinion, but Digital Zoom is always a no-go for me

Agreed. Instead of zooming, id actually walk closer to the subject. Zoom on mobile devices are pretty useless.

Yeah I never realized it until I compared them directly with the One X
ok, i'llplay. i want to compare my nitro hd to my canon 5d mark II
on the left is a picture i recently took with my mark II (my mark IIIs are arriving next month!!;-))
on the right is a picture of that picture i just drunk snapped in a dark room , blur and all
godd nite
Yo dawg I heard you like pictures,
So i took a picture then put it on my monitor, then took another picture of the picture.
Also, if your job is taking photos of babes all day, WAY TO GO MAN, LIVING THE DREAM
wow never noticed the colors were that off either. i mean, quality wise, its just about the same but the colors is what drives the eyes to perceive better quality. interesting. its cool thought. i dont take too many pictures, but good to know. i have about a year left with the phone. i can survive
This is a picture taken with the ProCapture camera app while on ICS. Pretty darn good app.
I use ICS Camera(App), it takes pretty good picture.
The one x photos looks crisp , but its the one x that made the pink hat red not the nitro.

I believe a little tweak on the white balance and exposure will give you better pics with correct colors.
Does an app like procapture change anything with the camera/encoding quality? Or does it just give you more options to tweak?
hah! i completely forgot i hit this thread, where'd the op go?

Awesome, thanks I'll try that
Hello,
my galaxy s2(I9100G variant) was stolen and I'm thinking about getting a gnex for the updates and long developer support(there are other stuff I like about gnex but that's my main reason for getting it) but one thing is holding me back, the camera(also the lack of sd card slot but I can give that away if it's worth it).My phone is usually my main camera,I got a kodak digital camera but I use it in special events only.I mainly take pics with friends for uploading on social networks and stuff like that.So I wanted to know your thoughts on the camera, also would be nice to get some feedbacks from people who switched from S2 to gnex. Thanks in forward
The camera isn't that bad, sure its only 5mp compared to the 8mp on the s2 but its not the end of the world, its acceptable imo.
You wouldn't be able to tell the difference in picture quality if you took pictures outside with good lighting.

I believe there's nothing in my thread that's against the rules. And yes I did search before posting and I couldn't find what I'm looking for.
I personally will choose GNex mainly cuz I want Google experience (pure)
If you can get S2 for a really nice price (REALLY NICE), and you want that slightly better camera (GNex isn't bad either btw, night shot is pretty bad though), nobody is stopping you from getting S2.
Bare in mind that S2 is almost dead in both updates and for developers, since S3 came out.

not me, im constantly trying to show people that its an awesome camera. people just dont know how to use it. they expect the camera to do all the work for them, but it only does what you tell it to do. plus its really important to keep that back lens cover smudge free.

Very nice pics. I personally don't have an opinion, my eyes are not the best, and I've never had a good eye for capturing photography myself. I just use the camera casually and it works fine for me. What I meant was the general consensus on the camera is that it is poor, that is what the websites and reviews and even users all complain about. It may just be a common misconception, but it's widely the accepted view, accurate or not.
Not better than my SGN. I am still pleased i didnt go for gnex and opted a note last year.

TIPA didn't evaluate image quality only, but the whole pack of good screen, zero-lag shutter, 1080p recording and some other goodies.
TIPA meeting was on 24th March 2012, so it's understandable why they choose Galaxy Nexus.
All I can say about the camera is, its the only camera that can take colour accurate images of my coral reef aquarium. I've tried several cameras and other phones and its way off. Mind you I've learned the best settings for that application is simply changing it to cloudy.
