[Q] Stuck in Boot Loop after flashing custom ROM - HTC One X

So I just decided to flash a custom ROM to see how it faired against stock, went through everything in the following thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069904) and flashed Paranoid Android and the Gapps package, then flashed the boot.img.
After that I was just stuck at the boot loop, couldn't get out of it after a couple of restarts, tried flashing again etc. I'd done a nandroid backup beforehand so thought I'd just revert back to that and everything would be fine.... so restored to the nandroid and now I'm still stuck in the boot loop, cannot get out of it.
I've looked at the recovery threads which say this is quite common, and I'm sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question but I can't figure out how to go through the command "fastboot erase cache"
I'm assuming it's in the command prompt but all I get is: 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Can anyone explain how I do this? I have the Android SDK installed, but apart from that I've no idea what to do.
Cheers.

Place these files in c:\fastboot\files from my download
http://db.tt/ldx3qOOU
Copy the boot.img into that folder and then open a command prompt In that folder, shift (or ctrl) right click inside the folder and select open prompt
Then you put the phone in the bootloader and select hboot one time and you should see in red
Fastboot usb
Now type this command in the command prompt on the pc
Fastboot devices
When a serial pops up you are good to go ....
Flash the boot.img
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot erase cache
Then enter the custom recovery and perform a full wipe. Don't forget the dalvik cache too
Then install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard and select the rom.zip
P.S. what is your hboot number ?

Thanks for the info, just trying it now.

Still stuck in bootloop after all of that.

Flashing the boot.img went okey now ?
What recovery are you on ?
And try a different rom

Yeah managed to flash boot.img through fastboot, still stuck in bootloop.
I'm on CWM based recovery that can with Hasoon2000's toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24972527
Yes-No Adv-Wipe Recovery CWM Based v6.0.2.7
Again might sound a stupid question, but how do I push a new ROM to the sdcard? or flash it through fastboot?

You can mount the sdcard as a usb mass storage drive inside the recovery. Look for the option, I never used that recovery so i don't know exactly where they put that option
Then you can copy the rom.zip over to the sdcard. And always flash the boot.img that comes with the rom. Like when you restore the nandroid backup you also need to flash the boot.img from the nandroid, the same counts for all custom roms unless the OP of the thread says different

Recovery, mounts and storage, mount usb storage.
Sent from my One X

Ok I'll give another ROM a go, cheers for the help so far.

I suggest you fly on the JB viper x
And if you want to be certain that you did a full wipe you can install this script right before you install the rom.zip
http://db.tt/eLoVUcRc

Success....
Flashed ICJ and all worked fine, so just going to try a few ROMs tom find the right one.
Cheers for all the help. Much appreciated.

Nice ! So our job is done here

I had problems with the paranoid rom too, on hboot 1.39. I solved it by using a different boot.img than the one supplied with the ROM in the zip. Will provide it tomorrow if interested, im on the "wrong laptop" now - i dont have it here.

Here are the files. The boot.img and extra modules.
1. Clear cache, flash boot, flash modules as zip from CWM or similar, clear cache, factory reset, flash rom, flash gapps, and clear dalvik to be sure. The filename suggests what version the rom was on when i downloaded the boot and modules (got them from the thread).
If theres anything just reply in this thread And good luck! I didnt use the paranoid rom very long, i didnt like the way the settings were made. Running IceColdJelly 1.5 now.

[Q] Bricked my phone, please help

Thankyou anyone for helping me.
I was trying to update my phone to the Maximus rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601543) from an AOKP JB ROM.
I succesfully followed the instructions to relock my phone, the flash the firmware, then unlock it again. Unfortunately I was foolish and didn't think to copy across the rom.zip before doing this. I tried restoring a Nandroid backup but was stuck in a bootloop. I also tried reflashing the previous AOKP Rom that I had on there. In this case it booted but I had no radio, no wifi, and importantly I couldn't mount over USB to copy across the new ROM. I'm guessing neither method works because of the new HBOOT?
I went to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609190 and it's clear that I have to flash an RUU through fastboot to get back to a working state. Unfortunately All the RUU links for JB Roms as listed on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957376 seem to be dead so I can't download them. Similarly the links to older RUUs found here http://www.filefactory.com/f/e3e8b30e62a4a8aa/ all require a premium account because they are over the 500MB limit.
Can anyone tell me where I can please get an RUU to restore my phone to working order, or if there's another method available? Thankyou very much for your help.

Thankyou for the suggestion, but the problem with that method is that once again the ROM I want to flash has to be moved over to the virtal SD card of my phone. Since the ROM on it is currently not working I can't copy anything across to the SD card through the usual means. Is there a way I can copy it across using fastboot, as that is still working fine? I had a look at the fastboot help and there didn't seem to be any way. What I need is a ROM that can be flashed over fastboot, which I understand can be done with the stock RUUs?
I'm not panicking, I know that I will be able to get it back up and running, I just need a bit of help to get there.
Boot into bootloader and from there to recovery , mounts and storage - mount as USB ....and you have a working sd card to copy the rom.zip file to
Copy the rom.zip to the card and copy the boot.img from the rom.zip to the fastboot folder.
Flash the boot.img and flash the rom from recovery ..... Are u using cwm recovery 5.8.4.0

Thankyou so much for that suggestion. That would really help. I'm sorry, I don't know what I did, but now if I try to go into recovery the recovery flashes breifly on screen and then it resets. I tried reflashing it, using the All In One toolkit and using Fastboot.exe. I also tried flashing both the CWM recovery and the TWRP recovery, neither of them worked.
Thankyou for your help again, I'm sorry but recovery was working before, I think all I did was flash a boot.img but could that break recovery? I even tried going through the whole relock, flash firmware.zip, unlock, flash recovery procedure to see if that would work but it didn't.
Do a fastboot command
Put the phone in bootloader / fastboot USB menu
Fastboot erase cache
Check if you can enter recovery after that

Thankyou! That fixed the recovery issue. Once I could get into recovery I could copy across the ROM, flash it, flash boot.img (not that that was a problem) and my phone is now in woring order again.
Once again, many many thanks.
Glad you got it sorted !

[Q] Forgot to install ROM before the custom recovery.

I was following this guide with the intention of installing Cyanogenmod on to my HTC One X (international version), and I got as far as the Flashing a ROM section, towards the bottom, when I reached step 5, which reads "Make sure you already have your shiny new ROM .zip on your internal memory as you cannot enable mass storage in the current recovery builds."
At this point I realised I had not done this, and I have no way of putting the ROM onto the phone. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to start from scratch, and if so, how do I do that?
I'm following this guide regarding installing the ROM, but is there a better one? That guy cannot spell.
I also have this thread open for CM10.1, but it's quite confusing. Should I be downloading the following?: Beta 7 (pure JB vendor): http://d-h.st/fo4 - Kernel 3.1.10 included.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, and "backed up." I don't know what I've backed up, but I've backed up something. I have not wiped anything, and I still appear to have a functional phone.
you probably backed up the stock rom however to push the rom onto your phone you should go into recovery and mount USB and the put the rom onto the sdcard that's it...

Do I just place the file in the main folder, or does it go somewhere specific? Thanks for your help by the way.
You can mount it inside the recovery as a diskdrive and yes you need that cm10.1 + gapps if you want them too. Mount it and copy the rom and gapps to it
Here is a small tut i wrote earlier. ...
This counts for recovery cwm 5.8.4.0 (otherwise a full wipe in any other recovery must be done)
In recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced - wipe dalvik cache
Mounts and storage - format cache, data, system
Remove the cable to the pc before installing the rom !
Then install CM10.1 after that GAPPS.....DO NOT REBOOT
Reconnect the cable and ......
type in the fastboot command window
Adb reboot bootloader
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash boot boot.img (the file from the rom)
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot reboot

Ok, once this gapps is downloaded I am good to go I think. If I brick it I can just break it and claim it on the insurance. Although this phone is brand new because my old one drowned a couple weeks ago, so they mightn't like two claims in such quick succession.

Well you have a certain folder on the pc....from where you also flashed the recovery ? It contains fastboot.exe and adb.exe files ....right? You open the cm10.1.zip file and you see the boot.img file in there, you copy that to the fastboot folder on the pc and flash it

before going into recovery you should go into fastboot mode, connect the phone to your computer and type those command in the terminal/cmd, the boot.img file can be easily found in the cm10.1 thread or in the rom.zip... after that install the rom following the steps above...

I'm on a Mac, so the guide said I only needed the fastboot file, not the adb one. What do you mean "flash it"?
I've rebooted the phone as you said, but it just says "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped." I click Ok and it says that again.

fastboot mode: power off the phone, power+vol down, select fastboot and press power, you're done
You can go in the bootloader first and flash the boot.img. I described it the other way around because you end with a cache erase to avoid boot problems (got this from the thread itself)
Basically it comes down to this
You put the phone in the bootloader and you see a red text that says "fastboot usb"
At that point you flash the boot.img from the mac to the phone.
Then you unhook the cable and do the rest of the guide

Hi I have a India "HTC__038" CID HTC One X. I tried to install CM10.1 so these are the steps i did before I got stuck.
1. unlocked bootloader from HTC.
2. flashed cm10.1 nightly and gapps
unfortunately since i did not backup my ROM i am struggling to get my phone working. Please help me. Super crazed out.
You need to flash the boot.img file, and you need to install the vendors file too !
Make a full wipe in the recovery and install cm10.1 then the gapps and then the vendors
http://db.tt/u5FF3jgi
Then you boot into the bootloader
Adb reboot bootloader (from the commandprompt)
Then flash the boot.img file, its in the cm10.1.zip file
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot reboot
hi i am a newbie so please can we do this one step at a time please.
What recovery did you flash ? Type and version number ?
Edit : Ow and now did you flash the custom recovery ?
i did not have a recovery when i flashed it
You cant install a new rom without a custom recovery !
The basic steps are :
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
Make a full wipe
Install the new rom inside the custom recovery
Flash the boot.img with fastboot commands from the pc to the phone
You didn't do your homework mate
Go in here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832891
There are tutorials on Adb/fastboot commands ....
thats the problem. the ROM is deleted and I have no way of adding any ROM now. can we chat thru IM this is taking too long.
thank you. i have my phone now unlocked but i am trying to flash the "boot.img" (from CM10.1) and then going to recovery->backup and restore but still this does not do anything
Did you flash a custom recovery ? Flash this one
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
Put it in the fastboot folder on the pc and Renske it to recovery.img
Put the phone in the bootloader and open a command window inside the fastboot folder. Hold shift + right mouse click then open command window here
Then you type :
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot erase cache
Then enter the recovery and go to mounts and storage - mount as usb diskdrive/mass storage. Copy the cm10.1, gapps and the vendors file there
Then perform a full wipe
Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced - wipe dalvik cache
Mounts and storage - format cache, data, system
Then do what i wrote my first reply
Ps installing the rom is done with the option :
Install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard.
now how do i copy CM10.1, Gapps and vendor files from computer to phone. I am not able to see the phone on my disk drive.
Mount it as a usb mass storage device in the mounts and storage menu inside the custom recovery
WOW AWESOME. got it installed now. YOU SAVED MY DAY(/NIGHT). now time to spend time and get my phone back to how it was before. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

[Q] help a noob

Hi all,
Apologies i have read numerous threads and have tried to look at what i can but im gettign rather confused, any help would be great!
After 6 months have had the time to root my htc one x after allot of reading...
I successfully did this with the help of Hasoon2000's HTC ONE X All in one kit.I unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP 2.4.1.0
After i did this i decided to make a backup in TWRP and then try to install a custom ROM, since rooting the HTC One X was pretty simple...
So i downloaded the fastboot files to my desktop, extracted the 4 files in a subfolder, with the boot.img of VIPER, then i mounted my phone to the laptop and stored the VIPER.zip to the root of the SDCard, i then went into Recovery, wiped the cache, etc and went to install and chose the VIPER.zip and it went through the install.
I managed to install VIPER but upon reboot it just showed the HTC logo (white screen) with a snake slithering across the bottom and then hangs there forever..
I decided to go back and restore to the standard ROM but upon checking i dont have any backup??!! Im not sure if i deleted it by accident???
I can boot back into recovery and fastboot but i cant load any ROMS, i have tried numerous, some fail and the others just hang upon boot up...
How do i get my phone working?!!! Does anyone have any advice as to what im doing wrong please or what my options are????
I have looked at going back to stock ROM by checking what my RUU is and CID is but i cant find my version....
C:\Users\310058494\Desktop\flash\Fastboot>fastboot getvar version-main

hi there, yes i flashed it, i did the following:
I wiped pretty much everything.
Pressed install. Went to the folder where the ROM i downloaded, is located in. Selected the ROM and slide the screen to flash it.
After it flashed, i pressed the back button. Pressed Reboot and Reboot into bootloader. Then opened the ROM i downloaded from my computer and extracted boot.ig it to my computer. Opened hansoons toolkit and pressed Flash a Kernel. Locate the boot.img and flashed it.
Then rebooted, just tried again and the phone has again just hung upon white HTC logo and a snake i the bottom right hand corner...
So the kernel is flashed ! Try this now
Make a full wipe in the recovery again. Wipe all caches, dalvik caches, system, data, android secure......all except external storage !
UNHOOK THE USB CABLE !
install the rom again
Wait a min you are on one of the low hboot versions.

do i need to flash boot.img after installing viperx3.4.0?
To update your hboot, do this:
1. DL this firmware package http://goo.gl/4X9YI
2. Put it to your fastboot folder (the folder with fastboot.exe etc. etc.) and rename the file "firmware" if it already isn't named so.
3. Hold SHIFT and RIGHT click anywhere in the folder. Select "open command window here"
4. Type the following stuff
fastboot oem lock (this will lock your bootloader so that you know)
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash firmware.zip (do several times if fails)
Unlock the bootloader using the toolkit
Flash a recovery using the toolkit
Then re-do everything you already did (also boot.img)
i did steps 1-4 but it failed on the fastboot flash firmware, it said cannot determine image filename firmware.
Do you mind if I do it remotely? Download an application called TeamViewer. When you're ready, send me you ID and password via PM.
We can chat as well.

You need to flash the stock hboot.
alpharev.nl
Go to this site, and scroll down to the table. Download the stock hboot, and the downgrader, and extract both (if needed, I don't remember if they came as a zip or not) .img to a location on your PC.
Then do a nandroid backup of your current ROM (just in case). Wipe data, system, cache and dalvik cache, then boot in fastboot.
Connect your phone to your PC (I hope you have fastboot and hboot drivers installed). Then, using this command:
fastboot flash hboot
Select "Reboot bootloader" on your phone.
Then, type the following command:
fastboot flash hboot
Then, reboot bootloader again, and boot in recovery. Then flash your JB rom choise.
