Hey guys, how safe (for our screens) is it to leave it on over night used as a desk clock with the Daydream feature of 4.2? Its on super dim also. Just curious if I do this every day if my screen will give out early or something.

Aside from messing up with your sleep (can't really get into deep sleep, think android ), it will indeed use your screen and battery faster but shouldn't be anything dramatic.

I see. I have my phone plugged in overnight and my case has a kickstand so for me its a pretty good feature that the clock has a super dim night mode. Thanks for answering.

The only downsides I really see is killing the overall battery life and screen life. I would address if you can find how many hours of screen life these screens are rated for... I'm sure you could leave this screen on for years straight with out it going bad but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

AMOLED screens aren't subject to image burn-in, are they?
I also use my phone as an alarm clock on my night stand while it's plugged in at night. I use the "Dock Clock" app and it goes very dim and cycles the clock around the screen very slowly so there'no chance of burn-in.

You sir, are correct. That is also true for all LED/LCD screens, plasma can have some burn in, but it's usually not permanent. Plus, daydream in Chronus is like a screen saver, it's not static, it moves.
As far as leaving the screen on all the time, AMOLED has a lifespan of about 10 years (depending on manufacturer & other variables). So unless you plan on keeping your S3 for ten years AND plan to always have the screen during that time, I think you'll be fine.
---------- Post added at 05:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:40 PM ----------
When I would leave my screen on overnight my S2 (SGH-I777) using the dock clock, the white text would be blue in the morning. Not sure if was normal, but I could turn the screen off and back on and the text would be white again. I haven't done this on my S3.

Hello I have 4 perfect circles going vertically on the right half of my screen, they are about a half inch diamenter. They have an outline of about a 1/10th of an inch outline.
Anyone else have this issue? I tried to take a screenshot but this is a screen issue so it doesn't come out on the pictures. Ill try to get a picture.
Any input on what they could be??
They are more easily viewed on whote backgrounds or any light color background

Did you have an image on screen for an extended period of time? This sounds like a burn in. It happens on these screens when something is on the screen without moving or any changes. It just burns in. If you go thru some of the settings on the phone there is an option that helps against this.

If I use my alarm clock the stock Android one and dim the screen so the large clock shows will that lead to a burn in? It's something I would always do with my old lcd but now I'm scared with this phone

Are you using a screen protector? If so, try the burn in test without that on and see if those circles are still there. It might just be the screen protector.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
The four circles may be correlated to the four fingertips of your left hand. Could it be that the screen protector is damaged with some kind of oil deposits? Have any KFC lately
I have the same thing. You only see it when you look at the phone from the side... so I don't mind at all

I stumbled across a cool little feature while the screen is off. Cover the light and proximity sensors for several seconds and the top half of the screen will emit an aqua blue aura that displays missed calls, messages, and battery. I know this feature is somewhat useless, just thought I'll do some digging after it accidentally popped up on me while handling the phone.
Edit: Cool, I didn't realize it was the Quick Glance feature. Thought I was going crazy when I couldn't figure out how to reproduce it.
Hmm I do not see that
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Doesn't happen here, either. Is this some kind of buried setting?
I could see this being useful if it could detect your phone is in your pocket, and when you pull it out, it would show that information.
It's in settings - motion - quick glance.
Then if you scroll down while still in motion to advanced settings there are more options for it in there.

Yeah I found it, very neat. I turned it on, I'll see if I continue to like it or if I find it annoying.I turned on a few more motion features. Why not try them?
The phone must also be laying flat (like on the table for example) otherwise it doesn't work.
Yeah it doesn't seem to be too reliable plus the info goes away too fast for me

Don't think it would do much damage to the 3100mAh battery. I'm still getting over a day's use, at least 6 hours of screen on with the quick glance feature on. According to others, it only triggers if the phone has been laying on a flat surface. So I think it'll be just fine in our pockets.
So I'm watching a video (expanded to full screen) on the stock browser at night in a dark room when the screen times out.
I can't find any way of switching the screen timeout off, and have to resort to setting the time to maximum and having to reopen the screen and restart the video every 10 minutes.
There has to be a solution to this annoying problem? Please?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Is smart stay enabled or is it just not working on the dark room ? If smart stay is not working then you can just pull out the s pen from it's holder or hover with the s pen instead of closing the video.

Here one of them from note 2 thread..

U can found more from note 1 thread..
Not saying watch video can confirm the screen burn issue..just saying maybe it can cause life span of screen burn become short..but definately amoled screen can not avoid it..

Fair enough, but there is "no issue."
Why have this phone if you don't use it? Besides, full screen is probably one way to AVOID burn in.

Yes, this avoids the screen burn. Screen burn only happens because some of the led's are used more than others which is why some degrade faster which results in varying color contrasts. Using full screen almost all the time however, uses all of the led's, thus all of them will degrade at a slightly similar rate and the change of color contrast would not be as noticeable to the common eye.

I'm having the same problem not sure why there would be this problem considering no phone for the last 4 years have had this problem. Terrible overt sight by Google/Samsung. Really interested if some one finds the solution to this.
Use Profile Scheduler from the play store it lets you set up a profile with a setting for screen time out never option. Thats the only reason I use it. I listen to alot of music in my truck and it keeps the musoc player from going to sleep.
Screen time out issue is only when watching flash enabled videos in browser.
Reason : Flash is not supported in Jellybean officially,
So just using flashplayer.apk will not rewrite screen timeout settings in system files.
And, smart stay doesn't work in dark room with lights off.

Download "Screen on" from playstore.
Check the application ie Internet for stock browser and then check enable.
Swipe your hand slowly over the sensor and the phone will show time, missed calls, messages, and battery percentage. I think it's a pretty tight feature. Was just wondering how many people actually knew about it and use it.

It's a nice feature but I wonder how much battery it will drain? If you think about it, in order for it to respond when you put your hand over the sensor, it means the sensor is always going to be on. That means something is running all the time.

Its a really nice feature for when ur walkimg around ur office or house and just wanna see if u have any missed txt, but i did read something online where it drained the battery super fast. used it for about an hour, was pretty meh. Good concept, but bad implementation. I have my phone on my desk and it was always turning on and off. But when I needed it to to show me quick glance data, it worked about 50% of the time.
The only thing from that menu I love is the Palm Swype to screen capture.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
I have been testing the quick glance feature and noticed that it works best in low light conditions, especially in darkness..
I sleep with my phone on my bed (I use it as my alarm clock) and with the lights out quick glance works for me every time. I have gotten to like it because the screen is much easier on the eyes, at night (dimmer), than hitting the power button to check the time/notifications. I disable it during the day though.
The Palm swipe for a screen shot is awesome. It is a much faster way to take a screen shot than having to take out and use the S-Pen.. I wish the screen didn't turn white while swiping though. Not a big deal I just think the loud click upon taking the shot is enough to let the user know the shot had been taken.
I used it when I got my Note in November but as mentioned, it does cause a very noticeable battery drain.

So I've read a few posts from some users and saw a video in youtube but I'm confused. Does auto-brightness save battery life or not? Because some say it dims the display, but others say it's constantly using the light sensor to search for the lighting of the room (lux auto brightness uses the light sensor whenever the phone screen is turned on)
So auto brightness yay or nay?

I haven't noticed a HUGE difference in battery life using auto-brightness; on top of that, it always seems too dim for me anyway. I'd rather lose out on that extra 15-30 min of battery life at 100% brightness than I would strain my eyes.

I wouldn't draw that same exact conclusion; it would really depend on how heavy a user you are. I, personally am a pretty light user on average, so I wouldn't really experience much of a noticeable difference stretched out over 2 days... but for someone who is a heavier user, that difference could mean an extra 15-30 minutes. Not all that much, but definitely noticeable for people who have their screen on all the time.
