need to transfer a rom from windows xp but only recognizes device as media player. doesn't allow me to transfer zip files. changed file extension to jpg and was able to transfer, but can change the extension from the phone. only installed the phone driver. anything else I need to install?
Thanks!
Mine recognizes as a media device in Windows 7 also, but I am able to transfer any type of file.
If you have a WiFi connection you can use Airdroid ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid) to transfer it.

Download Samsung Kies and it should include any missing drivers for your computer. Also, when plugged in, you can sometimes swap between Media Device (MTP) and a Camera (PTP) device, to get it to work properly. Hope this helps.
Somewhat related question...is there any way to play my music fron the internal sd card onto my car radio. Came from an ns4g and was able to do this from the built in 16g memory. Didnt have an external sd card on the ns4g and havent gotten one for the gs3 yet.

Hi all,
I've a very strange problem with transferring MP3 files to my Desire via USB.
Mine's an Orange branded (eurgh) 2.1 version with an 8GB SD card that had been formatted via the phone OS previously.
The problem is I can no longer copy MP3 files to the device via USB. There's plenty of space, I can transfer MP3s all day long via Bluetooth and I can even rename my MP3 files to '.txt', transfer them and then rename them back to MP3! Very weird! Only seems to effect MP3 files.
I get 'Can't read from source file or disk' in Explorer or 'Cyclic redundancy check' in DOS from whichever PC I try from (have tried from an XP and Win7 PC).
Has anyone else encountered this problem? I've not yet tried an alternative Micro SD or reformatting again.
Cheers.
Had a similar problem I think. Initially thought it must be a faulty usb cable. I just removed the cable and reconnected it to the back of my desktop and viola! She worked like a dream..

Unfortunately my USB port got effed up and it is no longer possible to get into usb storage since my computer wont recognize my phone.
I was wondering how I could put a zip file on my phone without a cable. I tried dropbox but it gave me a "permanent failure" error. Guessing the file was too big(almost 200 mb).
Also, is it possible to flash ROMs from another folder? For example the external card. If I can, I could also insert the sd card in my computer and just transfer that way, no?
download them directly to your phone through browser on phone. the external card transfer would work as well.
I have used the sd card method on my phone with out any issues. You can get a card reader for really cheap on Amazon or similar sites.
Use a file manager app like Astro or ghost commander to connect to your network and transfer over wifi. Or just DL the ROM to your phone.

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch
Ever since I got my G3 from Sprint, I haven't been able to see my external SD card on my PC when I connect with my USB cable. I only see my internal memory. This worked perfectly with my Galaxy S3, but it's been problematic from the get-go with this device. I can see and follow the paths on my device using ES File Explorer, but I don't have that path to click on in my File Manager on my laptop.
If I choose PTP, I can see my pictures, but if I choose MTP, I get nothing. I've toggled back & forth with debugging, but that doesn't change anything. Is it a driver I need to download? I have a 32 gig card, and I want to transfer some files to my pc that I no longer need for this device. I also want to more clearly see what's taking up all my memory, because I can't believe I'm using as much as my Settings/Storage says I am. I don't have a whole lot on here since flashing BarRin, and it says I'm using over 30 gb of internal and over 26 of my external. No way!!
Anyone have a fix?
I am an idiot. I downloaded the drivers, and I'm fine now. If the mods want to delete this thread, that will be fine. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hello! I've got a 64GB USB C drive I'd like to use with my bone stock Nexus 5x. It's formatted through the phone, and I get the notification to explore the device storage. Unfortunately, just about no other app can see the device storage. No file manager except for ES File Explorer can see it. Most importantly, I'd like an app called LocalCast to see the device storage for casting media from the drive to Chromecast and other DLNA players without copying to device storage first. But like I say, they don't seem to see the drive.
Is there any way to get this to work? I'm open to rooting if it would make it work, but this is my first experience with OTG, so thought I'd ask here first.
64GB Sandisk micro-sd, formatted to FAT32 with the phone. stickmount(pro) installed and the card is recognized by every app on Nexus 5X MM 6.0.1. Poweramp & MX Player both do auto scan of the card when inserted. I also have a 128GB card formatted to exFAT, it doesn't get recognized by anything other than SolidExplorer's USB plug-in.
Just go with FAT32 Format and get Stickmount app should do the trick.

Yip as stated above stickmount is required for nexus's if rooted.
Otherwise try a play store search for "otg" if unrooted

I see! I kind of thought it would work out of the box with marshmallow but this is very helpful. I just wanted to make sure it would help before I pulled the trigger on root. Thanks guys!
Anyone else having the issue where they can't transfer files from their Win 10 PC to the phone? I have it set to File Transfer mode when I plug it in via USB into the computer. When I pull it up in File Explorer, it says "Phone". Double clicking it shows my MicroSD card and the internal storage. Then when I try to click and drag or Ctrl-C Ctrl-V a file into either spots, nothing happens. I did try enabling USB Debugging mode, but that's not required for a simple file transfer. This is honestly kinda ridiculous. Also, when I'd take my MicroSD and move files from windows to it by connecting it to a USB adapter, the files transfer onto the card, but as soon as I plug it into the phone, all those files disappear in the file explorer and are replaced with a file or folder called System Volume Information. Anyone else having issues??
Nope have copied files from what's app for printing and copied my music to phone storage and external memory card as well,

I had no issues using the steps you used. I just grabbed my USB-c to USB cable for charging my old oneplus, and it worked.
I used Bluetooth to transfer a few files from my PC to my phone. It worked great
Bluetooth works, plugging in phone (sd card formatted as internal storage), and Teamviewer works. I think I might use Teamviewer as it's similar to a ftp client program, makes it real easy.
What did you format the sd card as? Internal or external storage?

Same here.
For normal files and documents i just use Google Drive, i don't have huge important files i need to have when i am out and about so i am unable to test this as i haven't had a need to plug my phone into a pc for 2-3 years.
Bluetooth would work or an SD Card reader, as there are so many ways to get files between a pc and a phone without a cable its partly why ive not even bother to check the does my phone work with my pc step. Back in the days when you got Software and Drivers for your phone are a thing of the past.
I using wi-fi to transfer files you can easily find an app for that

Which app are you using?
Heya, chiming in here to suggest Airdroid...look it up, useful and needs no plugging in, just used your WiFi networks to do the transfer, very useful tool (I,d like to thank YouTubes Mr Mobile ((Michael Fisher)) for that)
No problem here also...I just use my GoPro5 Type-C Cable with my Razer, and Copy and Paste in Windows Explorer....easy. I recommend you try another cable
Using an anker "normal" usb to usb c cable works fine to transfer files. But I can only transfer files to the SD card, internal storage doesn't appear.
For transfer via WiFi I use es file explorer, it connects fine to windows shares even with needed auth
