I have a quaetion for you users that have flashed custom ROMS. I am considering going to a basic CM10, but as I understand it there is not a standard sms app included with basic android. I am on AT&T, and was wondering what others use for SMS/MMS functionality once you move to one of these basic ROMs?
Thanks,
-J
There is definitely an SMS included...

Hey guys, is there a way to get the native apps from pics without flashing a custom rom?
For example, I want ICS Phone, Contact and Calendar app.
Is it possible??

I'd like to move away from using gosms because it kills the performance on my phone whenever group messages are sent. While looking for an alternative, I saw this thread...
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...us/230061-4-2-1-improved-group-messaging.html
Where it looks like there is official support for it now? I'm hoping there is a way to get this on my phone without having to switch to a custom ROM
On TW ROM's Group messaging does not work I have tried all the AOSP Messaging ports for Touchwiz, and Group doesn't work at all.
Even Touchwiz itself doesn't have Group messaging at all, which is Samsung's fault, for whatever reason not to include that.
Two options. Run GO SMS or Handcent on a TW ROM, or move over to CM10.1 ROM's which of course do have Group and Quick reply fully working, stock.

Ok. Yeah I'm not liking gosms because it's a performance hog whenever I get group messages
Would moving to something like paranoid android be ok too? It would support it?

Yes. All CM10.1 ROM's are 4.2 based, which has Group messaging and Quick reply, standard default in the stock text app. May have to go into settings to enable Group, but its just one box to click, and your good.
Blows my mind, that Samsung left out Group messaging in Touchwiz. To some people like myself, that's a very important feature.
And GO SMS and Handcent suck, big resource hogs, and memory eaters.

GoSMS w/ the emoji plugin.
I heard you get a lot of spam with that app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I get a message or two month. Usually about a new theme they've added or some feature they've updated. Nothing intrusive, or annoying and its usually just a notification in that app that is quickly deleted.
I've been using it for about a year.

GoSMS 4.37 is what you want. It is available if you search. No spam.

I like handcent...not sure what the downsides are to handcent compared to the others. I did try gosms a while back and wasn't impressed. I could give it another shot though.
I really don't have a lot of requirements for a messaging app. I don't do groups or advanced messaging. Even so, I find the stock messaging app extremely unappealing and not adequate for my minor needs.
Handcent here. Been using it since my original Droid days I think. Just fell in love with it. The only other messaging app that I didn't much mind was the stock one on my Galaxy Note 2, but I've since fallen back to the familiar. I find it functional and customizable enough for my tastes.

Handscent here as well... with the group messaging plug-in... got rid of the Emoji plug-in due to it messing with my MMS for some reason... maybe a combination of the two... Main reason I got Handscent was the color customization to match my theme.
I have been using Trillian since the before android. It has been the best way to monitor all my IMs. Different customers all like different IM services and this way I could cover them all.

Default. I used to use go but it got too bloated for my liking and then they disabled backing up of sms to local storage and pushed their cloud backup.

Trillian handles sms/mms?

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

I tried most mostly because there seems to be a growing requirement for emoji. pffft.
All non stock apps except for chomp scroll very poorly when moving and reading through the messages: go, handsent, etc. Chomp is the only one that scrolls smoothly. However, I cannot attach pics or vids - it crashes. contacting the developer said "fixing hopefully in a week" until then I just use stock app o if I need to send a mms. I'd use the stock app but its emoji is very limited. always a compromise isn't it?
Pansi SMS nice simple interface. I use my backup root to save MMS and sms

Thought I was the only one on this. I've been using bitesms on Iphones for years so I've been so used to it, so when I jumped ship and go with the GN2 naturally I had to find somethign similiar. You're right about mms though, but I use stock sms app for that purpose, so chompsms all the way.
Go sms with emoji plug in. Like all the different emojis. Also wife has iphone with ios6 and stock messaging wouldn't show pics of the emojis on her phone. Go sms shows with no problem.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. I have been using chomp sms for the past couple of days and love it. It's not as flashy as go sms is with themes but it make up for it without the constant text messages they send you. I also donated to the dev which got rid of the adds so it almost feels like a stock app. Anyways its a really great app if any of you are interested.

Hey guys, what's going on. I peeked into the AT&T variant of the LGOG, and seen that they had a stock ROM with AOSP apps, like Messaging, browser, calculator, etc. While we do have most of those apps, the one app I really want to complete droidmk's stock/aosp hybrid experience would be the AOSP messaging app, especially since because I dislike the LG one so much. Would it be possible for us to get the messaging app? Or would things get too broken to implement into a stock ROM?
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Well I found an AOSP MMS.apk floating around the AT&T forums, but picture mail is borked Other than that, it works perfectly. Would anyone have any idea on a fix?

The 4.1 apps as they'd probably be the most compatible. I've recently discovered that Nexogen actually has all of these AOSP apps, except for MMS. And that's because MMS in the messaging app doesn't work at all. In fact, I don't think MMS works in ANY messaging app replacement from the market.

Hi everyone! I am currently looking for a massaging app that is Internet based. I have it narrowed down to three. Whatsapp, Hangouts, and BBM. I would like everyone's opinion on those and which is the better choice. Thanks in advance!
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Having not used any of those apps, I can't really offer any opinions of them. Personally, I think the best way to go is Google Voice with CM Team's Voice+, that way everything is handled through the stock messaging app. Ultimately though, it just comes down to personal preference. Use each one you're considering for a day, then decide which most suits your needs.

I just started using hangouts and I love it!

really just depends on what the other people in your life use. I personally just SMS and use hangouts because most the people I know are on google accounts. ive heard whatsapp is awesome just nobody else I know uses it so its pointless for me. its like trying to get people to use Google+ instead of Facebook, cant get anyone to switch
