I would like to get everyone's opinion, I'm looking at a couple options of how to get rid of Sprint / HTC Junk that runs at startup and continues to startup - Sprint Nav, Sprint Zone, Nascar, all those things. I'd love to hear alternate suggestions as well.
1. Startup Auditor - Seems to do a decent job of keeping things from starting, definitely reduced boot time, but I'm unsure of how it actually operates - is it just another task killer? Or does it actually take things out of a startup list without running in the background? I've been playing with it for close to a day and am still undecided, at times it seems to help, but other times I don't think it really did anything. It seems like having root would make it completely pointless, since you could edit things yourself.
2. Wait for Root - I already did the OTA update so root is not possible, from what I understand. With root access, I'm sure it would be much easier to remove the actual applications, and furthermore install custom roms without the bloat.
3. ?? You tell me please
Thanks guys!
If you're comfortable using adb, you can root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718889
I rooted my yesterday after the OTA and flashed Fresh 0.5.3. It doesn't have most of the crapware.

Funny I was just reading that. I have zero experience with ADB, but perhaps that is the best route. Can't be too hard to learn, right?
Thanks for posting that. If you have root, it mostly eliminates the need for a program like startup auditor, right?

Correct. Most ROMs already have the crapware removed, however, once rooted you'll also have the ability to remove and do anything else you want.
If you are uncomfortable with adb, don't be. There are enough tutorials and videos around to walk you through the process. Not only was I a complete noob when I moved to Andriod from the iPhone but I am also using a Mac which means the commands are slightly different. However, with a little trial and error I was able to root via adb the very weekend the phone was released when only adb instructions existed.
And, going forward you'll never have to wait for "Idiot Guides" again. Whenever something new and great comes along you'll have the skills to implement it right away.

I want to say that if you plug your phone into your computer and select sync option, that it will install the necessary drivers. Just make sure to turn on usb debugging in your settings menu: menu, settings, applications, development, usb debugging- check the box.

I'm following these instructions, they seem the most complete. I followed every step successfully and refreshed the pages, and it told me to reboot and run part2. However when I hit
adb reboot
it returns
adb: permission denied
What did I do wrong here?
EDIT: Missed hitting exit. That step wasn't there in original, it is in the recompiled though.
go read up on that thread, do a search for 'permission denied' or the like and I am sure something will come.I saw it a few times while reading that thread
err... Are you sure it didnt just mean reboot your phone?

haha thanks I was messed up because the original instructions didn't say to exit the adb shell (I probably should have known though) but now I'm past that, now to reboot and hit adb shell /data/local/part2 in time lol this is fun :-D
All done!!! :-D now to flash rom... good times!
Thanks all
Okay, So Ive Just Gotten My New Evo -Woot- About 2 days ago. Since then I have been wanting to root. Soo I've looked and looked to find a nice forum for me to root.
Note that the most ive done is Jailbreak an Ipod and Iphone. Compared to what Ive been reading up Rooting the evo is much more difficult.
Well I finally found a root that looked manageable.; The Simple Root. However when I try to do the last part and install the last version on Hboot it keeps giving me the error message of "Main Version is Older" Want To Reboot?
I dont know what it is that im doing. I Dont have wifi so this may be the problem. But Is there any other way that i can do a simple root without wanting to pull my hair out?
Much Appreciated !

Which software version are you on? if you have the 1.47 update then you need to do the simpleroot for that, its here in the development section.
Or you can do this

follow toasts root method from part 1 to part 2, you will be golden. it's not that much work and as long as you follow each step you will be all set! good luck!!!!
I Did do the SimpleRoot but when i try to push the files i get a protocol failure. The bytes never move. It just stays at 0 the whole time. Eventually it says pushing complete but the protocol fails on me and the bytes never move
What worked for me is what seems to have worked for others - I can't find the page on the thread so this is from memory but i'm pretty confident in it...
FOUND THE LINK http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720565&highlight=update+failed&page=104
disk mount the phone to the computer
erase the files that were pushed to the phone
- manually copy the files back to the phone
- re-start simple root at step 2
- when told to on the browser and go to that site, reload the page like 5-6 times
- keep the browser open when proceeding to the next step
- DON'T "press any key to continue" close the cmd prompt yourself by pressing "x"
doesn't really seem much different from the original steps but it seems to work try searching the simple root thread for the exact steps if this doesn't cut it for you...

Make sure you have USB debugging checked in Settings > Applications > Development.
I had the same problem today. You need to restart the whole process. DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING WHILE IT IS WORKING ON THE STEPS. If you click on another window or hit another key while you are running 1 of the steps you will mess something up.

First and formost, I'd like to thank ya'll for creating these awesome guides/ROMS/walk throughs and tools for rooting. That's a talent i'll unfortunately never have.
But to get to what I'm peeved about, everytime I try to root my EVO (I have the OTA update, 1.47.**.**.**), I get to the portion of the flash hack. I load the site/sites the first time. The command line tells me to refresh the page, but never tells me it's complete and to move onto the next step. I've performed every method I could find, each several times, and get caught with the same error everytime. OTA Simple, the other one written by the same author, another method with a batch file that automates it, etc. I'm at my whit's end!!
Any insight could help.
Also, SuperUser is installed from a previous failed attempt. I'm not sure if that would affect anything. Thanks guys, and keep up the awesome work!
Try using the original 1.32.xx... RUU and going back to stock then use the other Simple Root app for that version.

I had the same problems.....
best thing to do is wipe all your root files and start back at step one with simple root. When you get to step 3 and it tells you to continue to step 4 refresh the browser one more time just to be safe.
I kept getting stuck but deleting the root files and starting fresh worked for me.

Greetings fellow GNex owners and enthusiasts!
I've been trying to root my Galaxy Nexus unsuccessfully for the past week.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. I Unlocked the bootloader as per Droid-Life's instructions using an old method with the cmd prompt. (The complete How-To guide on their website) I installed the SDK on a windows 7 64-bit machine and went ahead with the process. This worked fine.
(*Note: My Gnex is stuck on 4.0.2 and it won't pull an update. I've tried the method of clearing the data from the framework app and resetting the clock to 1969 multiple times without success. probably 10-15 times.)
2. Since that I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, rebooting, and then rebooting some more. I've tried every available "noob-proof" method out there and i can't get it to work.
Tried Galaxy Nexus Tooklit v5.6
With and without the included drivers. tons of reboots and re-tries. root always fails.
Wugfresh's Toolkit 1.3
with and without the included drivers. tons of reboots and re-tries. root always fails.
Manually pushing CWM Recovery and SU to the phone with cmd promt via other tutorials floating around the internet, etc. Pushing CWM Recovery fails. Can't even get the temporary flash going to install SU
NOTHING works.
Is it because I unlocked the bootloader manually using an older method first?? I'm pretty sure I've been following the various instructions with each method accurately.
Can someone shed some light on me? I don't necessarily want to mess with kernels and custom ROMs. I just want to be able to wirelessly tether like I could with my OG and D2.
Thanks in advance,
Thanassi
Check my sig and try my method?
Haha.
But I'm guessing driver error.
The simplest method for getting drivers is to download and install pdanet on your PC. Then simply try again.

I've had to root my phone 3 times and each time took 3 tries before it took. As mentioned before also make sure your drivers are good. And su files.
bow chicka wow wow.

TADA!! You're rooted, and you can flash stock 4.0.4 (And root it, at the same time ^^)

I'm a noob too.
I followed the following method:
http://galaxynexusroot.com/galaxy-nexus-root/how-to-root-galaxy-nexus/
After Step 6 when I went to step 7 I was unable to see "Android ADB Interface", so I re-installed the drivers and repeated step 6. It worked and the rest of the steps went like Clockwork.
See if this method works.

As I am most likely NOT going to watch this video; Does it contain any Rundll32 commands?
If not, then the tutorial can't be all that good...
Because you need to tell Windows, that it should NOT always search Windows Update, for drivers. They're mostly crap, to be as nice, as I can...

Yes. You don't need the SDK, as a matter of fact
The Rundll32 part, is a fact, when installing the drivers...
It has the following effect:
You have installed ADB drivers (no Rundll32). You are flashing away, and all of a sudden. BANG! Everything stoppen. Phone's bricked... Why? Windows thought it is being smart, and installed new drivers, whilst you were working. However, with the RunDll32 command, you can tell Windows, that YOU want to install the drivers manually, and check manually. Of course, you can turn this off, if you want. No prob. but I personally recommend leaving it off
It's saved many phones' lives ^^
so you are having trouble with the adb or fastboot drivers? is so i had this problem too and sometimes even have to reinstall those drivers after flashing a rom.
i had to manually install the drivers using device manager, just select the android device and go to update driver. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software" then pick "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" then choose Google in that list.
Error

Thanks for all your responses and suggestions. I finally got something to work. After some more driver swapping and rebooting, now on an XP machine, I got wugfresh's toolkit 1.3 to flash cwm recovery and I was able to install su. The program then ran an automated script to allow permanent flashing of cwm recovery. Got my titanium backup and from manager back, as well as wireless tether. Hello,
I tried to root my new Nexus 7 (2013). I am not able to post the link of the tutorial which I followed (from androidrootz). I tried contacting the author of that tutorial - he did try his best but was not able to change the state.
When about to complete the entire process, close to the finish - I am not able to get inside the "Recovery Mode" to install Super User SU. i.e. When I press recovery mode in the bootloader I get the Google logo and it stays there till battery runs out.
Now when I start the tablet normally, I get the Google logo and the nexus logo. Then nexus logo stays there till the battery runs out.
I am a developer and I kinda need the tablet to run. My main purpose of rooting the tablet is to use certain admin feature and install a custom ROM.
If I could straighten up my tablet to work the way it does - that would really great. I am not bothered about the loss of data at all.
I could use both Windows and Mac to get things in order. At this moment I am not sure what the problem is nor do I know what to do.
If someone could guide me thro' to get the tablet up and running the normal, I highly appreciate it.
Thank you and regards,
Karsnen.

Are the commands the same in terminal, or should I run windows in a VM to use the command line?
The only cmd in that post is flash-all
It is the same. Get into the directory and enter flash-all when you have to, in the terminal.
When I'm in the VM in windows, I go to the directory, but then it says "flash-all" is not a valid command. What am I doing wrong? It won't work in Terminal either. Can you please walk me through it. I feel so stupid as is, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
