I'm back! (with the device and some questions) - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm back and I got my Desire Z back. Running Andromadus build 12, and I have some questions.
What is the best recovery out there? (I have goomanager installed and I would like to have TWRP, but I'm scared it isn't compatible)
Fastest ROM? I noticed that latest 4.2 builds isn't so fast, even with oc to 1.4 GHz, which worked fine with Virtuous Unity.
A lot have changed, you got camera working on Sense 4.0 and a lot of full Sense 4.0/4.1 ROMs.
I can be a ROM alpha/beta tester (I'm not afraid of bricks).
(Yes, this is a useless thread )

1. I use 4ext..love it
2. I would say gingerbread is best for stability and speed.

No offence, but I really really appreciate the developers work

4EXT cuz TWRP isn't there yet
CM7 cuz sense is slow as hell, and ICS/JB are still a little laggy/buggy

I use CM7, I used JB in a while, and it lagged more than Sense

I tried all the Senses and found (at least for me) Gen's Sense 4.0A was the best, and while it was useable for a DD, I still found lag in bringing up both phone and text messages, so back to GB I went.

Which froyo sense ROM do you use?

I know, such a question is asked every day but since the froyo OTA was released many roms changed completly and many new roms were created, too.
Unfortunally I dont have the time to test all of them, so I just wanted to ask for your suggestions
Which froyo-sense-rom do you use and is it worth flashing?
I have to say that I really haven't used any other custom ROM, but I've stuck with LeeDroid too. I'm currently using 1.6a as it has been perfectly stable with lots of nice apps not included in other ROM's. I love it also because it's updated almost daily. I'm still using 1.6a since 1.7 is based on the official HTC Froyo ROM and it's not as stable yet. I'm waiting until it's as flawless as 1.6a and upgrading then
on stock froyo 2.2 rooted (hboot .80) cause I can't be flashing custom roms for fixes daily. Need a stable (doesn't have be super speedy) rom with froyo and rooted for everyday use!

Exactly the same for me atm - would like to have a daily useable rom which is built from the ota. Maybe I will give 1.7b a try
From the beginning I've only wanted root access with the stock HTC ROMs as my daily use. I rarely flash additions and whatever I do is for long term use. I don't have time for problems and fussing around with new variables, bugs and shortcomings. Stock MFG ROM releases generally have excellency in stability, consistency, integrity and reliability which is exactly what I'm after. So I'm using the rooted HTC 2.2 ROM. Every mod or hack I needed is working on it. Battery life is still excellent. I couldn't be happier.

im using nextsence, i usually prefer stock roms over custom roms but this one is sweet, its like the stock rom but with a cool theme
I'm currently using the LeeDroid 1.7 Froyo ROM. Its working a treat for me at the moment, not crashes or stability issues, my only concern is that when having to reflash ROM's all the time that I will keep losing my apps. Though i'm told this is not the case if you use A2SD/A2SD+
I tried flashing 1.7b, but got no APN and couldnt add them manually. So i switched back to 1.6a

I used to have CM on my g1 too for long time...
I really love the sense widgets - and I can't find good replacements for them in the market
Only one choice imo if you want a stable & fast Froyo Sense. Neophyte 1.6.
Seriously - I've tried nearly every Rom including LeeDroid and this one is so much better than all of them.
atm I'm using Leedroid 1.8.
Really stable Rom - didnt see any bugs yet...

best Android 2.3 + Sense Rom

Hello guys,
I can't decide which Android 2.3 + Sense Rom I should flash on my DHD.
there are the following Roms to choose:
- LeeDroid HD 2.3.4 beta 3
- CoreDroid V4
- Android Revolution HD 4.0 beta 1
- VillainRom 2.0.1
- RCMix HD 4.2
Which Rom did you choose and why did you choose it ???
Thanks very much
VillainROM because Nathan, the maker of it, made also many very excellent ROMs for the HTC Hero and so I trust him that he'll also make good ROMs for Desire HD.
i had leedroid 2.2 and it worked fine. then i wiped my phone and installed leedroid 2.3, but only part of sense showed up on my phone! really weird. then i flased RCmix 2.3 and it works brilliant!
you mean RCMix HD 4.2, right ??
If you MUST use Sense (I dont know why...) The Beta ARHD 4.0 is your best bet. Its a good experience so far.
That said, I am a CM7 User, and I hate Sense, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
I had the same question some time ago and it's often a thing of personal decision. So you probably will have to try for yourself. All the ROMs have good performance.
I'm using Revo HD because it looks like stock but with nice tweaks.

Only reason that I use sense is because I like some of the Sense apps(Dialer and messaging mainly)
I'd Choose either of Revolution or Leedroid , both are gr8 roms, the others listed Tbh i havent flashed those on my DHD so can't really give my opinion on those tilli try em out. i've used leedroid since v.1.5 and its been my personal fave one to use daily.

Actually I am concerned about the daily usability of the different builds and if it's worth to jump to gingerbread seen the source is a leaked build probably in very early stage. I would like to try it but I feel so confortable with AR3 ... Please someone tell me I would not regret it

You could always back up your rom before flashing ?
I would obviously do it, but I am so lazy that was wondering if this rom is worth it ... I promise I'll do my homeworks and let you know here if it is
Android Revolution HD 4.0 beta 1 without a doubt.
Beta 2 out tomorrow so maybe you should wait for that one to flash.

Any idea what time beta 2 is being released?? Im looking forward to going to Gingerbread but am completely reliant on my phone for work and dont have a spare so want it to be as stable and have everything working before i take the plunge!! Also does anyone know if the GB roms can be overclocked yet and which radio should be used??
Thanks in advance!!
Nevermind, just checked and Beta 2 is OUT NOW!!!!
I am using leedroid 2.3.4 beta 4 r2. The reason i'm running this is that i have used his leedroid vesion on my phone since i bought it, and that he is very quick with updates and fixes. Also lee's rom is always lightning fast!

Just flashed back to stock 2.2

ok i have tried numerous ROMs (cm7, MIUI Desire Z 1.4, Senseginger 3.0, VillainROMZ 1.0.0, etc) and none of them seemed very stable.
pretty laggy or clunky and lots fo FC's so i went back to stock rom and
once again phone is working flawlessly.
now my question is...what now?
radios? kernels?
what do you recommend doing now that im rooted and back on stock ROM?
Have u tried virtuous?

If you're happy with the stock ROM, why did you root?
If you rooted just for the sake of rooting, then you wasted your time. Sure, you can uninstall bloatware but, really, you could have done that with temp root and PM.
Personally, I avoided MIUI (if I wanted an iPhone I would have bought an iPhone) and Sense ROMs (I don't care for eye candy) and the only lag I found with CM7 was due to ADW so I deleted it and either use the stock GB launcher or Launcher Pro and have had no lag issues.

First off, while the stock ROM is actually quite good, you don't know whether you will like newer or custom ROMs better unless you try them first.
Aside from that, there are plenty of reasons to root and stay on the stock ROM. Such as overclocking the CPU, being able to use Titanium Backup and other apps (ShootMe, AdFree), and there are other benefits, as well.
Being rooted isn't just about flashing custom ROMs.

Launcher Pro is currently my favourite launcher, it is very fast, even at stock speeds.
I've found that all ROMs can be choppy from time to time, especially when my phone is not overclocked. I'm running at 1.4GHz most the time, but that's probably overkill.
My vote if you want a "just works" feel is use Virtuous - no point using stock when Virtuous exists. It's so much better optimised and you won't miss stock at all.
thansk for the opinions guys.
since Virtuous is what was recommended...
which version do you recommend for the g2?
You'll want the newest version of Virtuous, as there isn't any significant difference between the g2 and desire z, as far as I know.
You can get the most up to date Virtuous ROM from this thread:
[ROM][04/11/11] Virtuous v1.0.2 (HTC Sense 1.85.72.2) w/Fixes & Enhancements
Alternatively it's available through ROM Manager.
If you want overclocking you'll need either the "Standard" or "Advanced" Virtuous kernel, which are both also available from ROM Manager.
If you click the link on the Virtuous thread, or download using ROM Manager, the latest versions (1.0.2) is the only one available. G2 or Desire Z doesn't matter.
If you are asking which kernel, that's your choice. The ROM comes with the "Virtuous Standard" kernel which is overclocked to 1 GHz. If you want more OC options, up to 1.5 GHz, pick the Advanced Kernel. But keep in mind you will likely have to tinker with SetCPU screen-off profiles, otherwise you will have screen wake issues with the Advanced Kernel. If you want the kernel that "just works" stick with Standard.
awesome replies guys. very insightful.
ive chosen to install virtuous with the standard kernel
heisdnice I'm in the same boat as you. I'm running the xboarder56 ROM right now as it seems to be running stable...mius the GPS not working its ok.
I tried the latest Virtuous ROM and found it to be pretty good but I noticed that I got a FC on Handscent SMS and WiFi calling (even with the latter being removed via ROM Manager patch). I also found that a couple of Storm8 games that were fine on other ROMs (incl. the stock) had some imaging issues.
Trying to go through a bunch to see which ones are good and most suitable for me.

[Q] Most Stable ROM

Hello ppl, i recently got a desire for uhh, 100 bucks
and now i see that this device has lot of ROMs.
(i'm now doing the roots and installing the recoverys)
I was looking for something simple, because this is for my brother and he is not such a geek, i just want a rom that does not have freezes or reboots, that works smooth
Does the ICS ROMs already stable or i should go for GB?
thanks ppl!
CM7 no questions asked.
Make sure to S-OFF and flash cm7 hboot to get the most space for apps
used CM7 a long time, but the ROM i used the longest is InsertCoin v1.1.4 on Stock HBOOT.
It's fast and stable, just had one issue in over 6 months which could be resolved by flashing a kernel without two way call recording.
Cyanogenmod, or Oxygen which is more barebones. Or stock Sense ROMs should be stable also. Personally I dont care for sense that much.
ICS is not stable, there are still some issues that need to be ironed out.
Stick to GB, I would recommend any of Roalex's roms, they're fantastic, even his ICS rom, which from my experience is the Best ICS rom on the desire at the moment.
Thank you everybody, now i gonna try your suggestions!
I really also liked Roalex's updated Oxygen, but it has one problem, if you move an app to sd, you can't move it back to the phone. This is using the standard apps to sd function of android. Roalexe's Cyanogen based GB rom has this issue also. I also had to restore apn's from a backup to get 3g working on the CM version. So they might not be as rock solid as original cm or oxygen.
I'm used MildWild V-4.0 Based on Oxygen 2.3.2 for about 2 to 3 months, I didnt faced single issue. This was my best ROM I have used..
Hi, I would tend to say Mildwild based on oxygen too. It is very stable. Mildwild CM is also nice but last version has bugs.
First, I would say, that it's ur choice.
Everybody says Oxygen is quiet good, but in my opinion, it's very ugly.
So CM will be nice, too. But u have to choose by ur self which rom is better 4 u.
The Gingerbread (Android 2.3.7) version of MIUI_Au (v. 2.1.13, which you will have to google as newcomers are stupidly barred from posting outside links) is also very stable, fast, and quite aesthetically pleasing, so you might want to give it a go.
Dont want to seem like a broken record but this is my post on another thread.
I know it's still in beta but Im using ICS .10.1 by Sandvold, very stable, no issues with the mass of apps I have installed and battery is great, better than stock I find. The ROM is fast and responsive again better than stock. Tried a few GB roms and sense roms but this is the best so far.
For various reasons I have gone back to these ICS roms, battery life, BSOD's and FC's. I've tried Runny roms and MUIU though still have serious issues on my phone. Running the current rom I could pretty much not update or change it and would be happy with it. Very stable, smooth and no BSOD's since latest update. Worth considering IMO.
Insetcoin is great, I'm on that ROM very long and its smooth and stable.
People claiming ICS ROM's at the moment are the most stable are seriously brain damaged..
3 biggest issues with all of them = broken video recording, no usb tethering, sluggish (unless you use only few apps and dont need a dalvik 2 ext scripts)
Also the "Full HWA" is still a hack.
I'm not saying they are bad, but they cannot be considered as "most stable" by any means.
The most stable ROM's by now, are the AOSP ones based on Gingerbread. (CM7, Oxygen etc.)
Ok maybe they are not "eye candy" out of the box, but if you spend some time to theme it then you'll be surprised, and you actually dont need Sense or ICS ROM's to achieve it.
Some examples. http://mycolorscreen.com/popular/
Hi,
I've been using mildwild V4.0 oxygen since it is out and I'm very pleased with it.
It is stable and fast. Sometimes I miss some sense functions like rolling numbers when setting the alarm clock. But when i use a sense rom, i realize how fast mildwild really is
The best is to try some Roms. Everybody has his own preferences.
I suggest mildwild v4.0 oxygen too
Runnymede AIO V6.0.4.3 Special Edition or MildWild CM 4.8
If you want ICS, BCM 3.7U0 but of course it's not the most stable ROM but I'm telling you this ROM is great although it says your sd-ext must be less than 1.5Gb but I'm using it with 2Gb sd-ext 4 on a class 4, 16 Gb sd card with no problem at all. Trust me on these if not the most stable only because of the usb tethering and 15fps video recording, this ROM is the most performance sucker I ever had my benchmark on quadrant advance is 1708 with this ROM and I didn't even overclock my cpu but on a stable gb ROM my benchmark was 998 with the same app.let me point out that I have 132 apps installed on the ICS but I only had 87 apps on the gb ROM.
And with mods I have made it too look like this:
I might be a new XDA-Developers user but it doesn't mean that I'm new to using its stuff, it only means that I have been dumb enough to just use and never comment!!
Hope I could Help

Goodluck
I thought that Sens is good when purchased my phone. Then it updated to 2.3, then I rooted it and got 3.0 with Virtuous Affinity and I still thought that I need Sense on my phone. It's only when I got fed up with all the lags I installed Mimicry. It was like a breath of fresh air. Everything suddenly was all smooth and lag free.
Make a backup, give it a try. If you won't like it - just restore.

Partially agree, but since I tried GenY, I don't have any complaints about speed and still have Sense. I was using Mimicry and have to say it's best AOSP ROM, but lack of mms and sending contacts by SMS forced me to go back for Sense rom. And only 1 is good is GenY.
