Ok SOooooooooooo really annoyed with phone. I need to flash a stock rom on and cant get into odin mode because the power button is broke. Its stuck on. I put the battery in phone boots. restarts a lot because of it. Any ideas how to get it flashed in the like 10 seconds it takes for it to hard reset??
A USB jig will get you into download mode. Also check if your ROM has an option for it.

first thing, calm down. lol damn
and I dont know of any other way to get into odin if your power button is broke unless you have a jig. have you tried looking for a program called "mobile odin"? Its in the play store. That may help you out

I have mobil odin. Im not to sure how to use it to get back to a stock/unrooted.
Let your ROM boot up, then in Terminal on your phone, or on your computer if you have ADB up and running, type: "su" (without quotes), then "reboot download".

Download connectbot from the market
Choose local for a client, name it su
Code:
$SU
#reboot download
Now your in download mode
Edit: you beat me to it lol

Check sfhub's EL29 Odin OC thread. There he tells you what to do with mobile Odin and how to unroot.

If the power button is stuck then whatever you do its going to keep off and onning, right? Regardless of what you flash it with or how, you need to fix this... Time to get the soldering gun out i think..

I doubt he can boot into the rom if power button is stuck. Looks like an infinite loop of hard resets once the battery is inserted.
Thanks. Im going to try the mobil one now. Ill let you guys know how it works. Otherwise Im getting some anfo and Im blowing up. I dont care.

Im going to go to sprint and get a new one. Once the boot animation starts itll boot up and be in the room. But if i move it too much it restarts. Ive never micro solderd so if i can get a stock rom it real fast ill just take it in.
Wait, can't you pull battery then hold volume down (and power) then stick battery in to get to download mode then toggle volume up real fast to get to Odin mode? Once you are in Odin mode I don't think power button gets you out. Then Odin stock
It will take you out of download mode. It's not supposed to but it can happen.

I tried it and holding down power will reboot the phone, even in download mode. I can't think of any way around it. It needs to be taken in and repaired/replaced. You can't get the phone to run long enough to flash anything if the power is stuck pushed.
Yea if power is stuck holding it down will always restart the device so even in download mode flashing with odin isnt the best idea because if it restarts during odin flash might hard brick the device

What does the rom have to do with a hardware issue? Just take the phone in.

grab a needle or something and dig in and unstick the power button. ive had to do that on a few cell phones in past years

It's weird...whenever I try to do any of those things, the screen will turn on for a moment [the backlight, no logo or anything comes up] and then after about a second immediately turns off....I tried injecting a rooted version of the stock rom with Odin into my phone, but I kept getting strange error messages like TouchWiz isn't working and some other android process isn't working.
[That didn't work, so I decided to try a different method. This is where I ****ed up, because I forgot to go back to stock rom...]
Anyways, after that, I tried to use the SGS3 Toolkit [if you search sgs3 toolkit xda, it'll come up] and I tried to use that to root. I went to "rooting options" and i selected option number 3, the all in one. I got to the point where it mentions your phone must be in USB debugging, and now nothing comes up when I try to start the phone..but it vibrates whenever I hold the power button long enough [as if it was working normally]. I can't get into download mode right now, either...
How do I reverse this and go back to stock? Please help...thank you so much.

I'm basing this answer based on how I understood what you said...
But, if you're already rooted, then hopefully you've made a backup before installing another ROM. If you have a backup, then put into recovery and backup.
I wasn't already rooted, I was trying to root it. I can't get into recovery.

Plug it into the computer and see if anything shows in device manager.

Have you plugged into the computer and checked device manager yet? What does it say?
I think if it says something like qhsusb that means its bricked.
I'm hoping someone can verify that though since I'm going by memory.

Well, I sent it back to T-Mobile and said hey it doesn't work. Let's see if they say anything about it. They sent me a new one, though
I'm having exactly the same problem with my T-Mobile Galaxy SII T989 running Open Kang AOKP JB Jelly Bean. After reading this thread, and another related thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679492), my less than scientific observation is that pressing/massaging/jiggling the power button seems to bring the device back to life. At least until it flakes out again. The posts in this thread were a big help. I was going to ditch the ROM, which would have been a shame. Thanks.
This phone was my dads until he got a new one, but he only has a limited amount of time to retrieve the data before it goes back to T-mobile or else he has to pay money for the broken phone core. It was dropped, and broke the digitizer but not the screen. As of now, the display doesn't work at all, but I can hear the phone turn on just fine. I have been trying to think of how I can access the internal storage without tearing the phone apart and getting to the storage directly(not sure if that would work either).
- Not rooted
- USB debugging not enabled. I thought I might be able to get to the storage via adb, but that will be useless without usb debugging activated.
If I need any more information, let me know.

Unfortunately, a solution was never found in that thread. Same exact problem though. The only difference is that my screen doesn't work at all. Completely black. The only thing that reacts to touch is the very very bottom of the screen below the capacitive buttons. Without USB debugging enabled, I'm in the same boat as the other users in that thread.
It's been a while since I used kies, so I don't remember much about it, but is there a way to make a backup using kies?
Sent from XDA app
Does the digitizer recognize anything, or is it really FUBAR?
Edit - actually read the last post by OP...
Is there a way to turn debugging on in stock recovery?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
Well, I tested it myself and I was able to connect the phones to kies and create a backup without ever touching the device. I don't have any security lock on my phone though, so it might not work if the screen is locked? I'm also not sure if you can back up everything, or just photos, videos, etc. Hopefully at least that will help someone with the same problem who searched and found this thread...
Digitizer is completely screwed up. No responding to anything on the screen, and the screen is completely black. Even if I was able to get to stock recovery, I wouldn't be able to see what I was doing. I'll look into Kies and see if it will work.
Well seeing as how stock recovery responds to side buttons, someone with stock recovery could map it out for you...
Also, can't you get to ADB from recovery?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
Is it possible to get to adb through recovery? I still don't have usb debugging enabled, so unless there is a way to activate it in recovery, then I don't know if it'll work.
It may work... Its worth a shot. Also, Google is your friend on this topic.

Hello,
Today my phone randomly turned off by itself, and when I turned it back on, it got to the samsung screen and then went black. After I tried again/pulled the battery, it did the same thing. I can access recovery and download modes, but when I tried to restore my phone, my phone ****s off before the process can commence. Since the phone barely stays on for 5 seconds, I can't get Odin to see my phone. Please help. My phone is rooted, but I never installed a custom ROM. I'm still stock.
Try to pull the battery, then plug in the USB. You should be able to enter download mode without the restart.

Doesn't work. When I plug it in without the battery, the charging light comes on, then turns off, then the mini vibration happens. But I never get a samsung screen. Can't access download mode at all without the battery.
That did happen to me before. I'm trying to remember how I repaired it. When the battery is in, and turned on. Is it rebooting alot or stuck on the Samsung screen?

The samsung screen will come up, disappear, and then the phone doesn't do anything again. I have to pull the battery to get it to turn on again.

Hmm. I'm stumped. Sorry. I had the very same issue with my i777. I had the Odin screen on while I fiddled wth the USB connection at the phone until it finally stayed connected long enough to push a recovery to it. Although it doesn't appear you have the same issue. I figured I'd throw it out there. Again. I'm sorry I can't help further.

Not to my knowledge, I can still push it just fine.
There have been more than a few instances where someone would have similar issues where if would shut off after a few seconds. Most times it would reboot itself over and over, but for a few people it would just shut down.
Most of the cases I've seen, it turned out to be something keeping the button in contact causing it to trigger the switch.
Sometimes it was the button itself got jammed, others the button felt ok, maybe a bit loose, but under it it was essentially pushed in. A couple have apparently just had a bad switch or a short.
May or may not be the case here, but thought I'd go ahead and mention it.

Some people simply opened up the phone and reseated the button. Others had to buy a new button and replace themselves. Some sent it in to a repair shop to have it done for them and a couple who suspected it was an issue with a switch or a short on the board I don't think were ever able to fix it.
One guy got mad at his and slammed it on the table. After that he said it worked fine! I do NOT recommend this!!! But I have fixed stereos, VCR's, CD players, and all sorts of electronic equipment with this method! I would never attempt it with this fragile screen though!
What I recommend is that you go to a phone service centre that does JTAG, that way they can diagnose and repair the motherboard

I was under the impression that Sudden Death couldn't happen to US variants and they they had fixed it in the updates, guess I was wrong. Gonna have my friend look at it, if he can't fix it i'll send it to T-Mobile.
when you try to access dl mode you get the option to continue or reboot, choose reboot and long press home and volume up, this will cause recovery to boot up (I sometimes have trouble getting it to boot with my problem without this method) then flash your rom again or flash a firmware package. this will at least get you into your rom for the time being. Then you can work from there.

did you try taking battery out for about a minute then putting back in and trying to boot to recovery?
So last night I went to check my phone and it was off so I figured it had gone off on its own but upon trying to turn it on again I found that nothing was working. I plugged it in and got no response. Took out the battery, tried to boot to download mode, or reboot and have tried just about everything to be found online. I left it plugged in all night and nothing. I called samsung and their suggestion was to hold the power button pressed down for a few seconds so after that extremely well thought out suggestion didn't work they said that I'll have to take it in on monday as their service places here are closed during the weekends.
my problem is that I haven't backed up my info and I can't afford to lose it and they said that they will wipe it once they get their hands on it. I don't have a second battery to test but I just plugged it into my computer and it was recognized as a USB device. Nothing more, not what it is and doesn't show up anywhere and nothing has happened on the phone but at least it was recognized.
This is the most messed up issue I have every encountered and it happened entirely on its own. Im all stock and am running purely simple apps like viber and whatsapp and seriesguide and family guy. Its the most mild mannered phone and has the most messed up issue. Its like someone sucked the electricity from it. Please give me some ideas
