My exFAT 64 GB SD Card was working fine when I had it on my TW JB based ROM. I switch over to a AOKP ROM (task's), that corrupted my SD Card, I tried formatting but it wouldn't work. I thought it was a ROM based issue, so I went back to a TW JB based ROM once more...
Now it formatted this time, but the card keeps unmounting itself immediately after I attempt to mount it, telling me that "it's safe to remove" - yet the card seems to be recognized (that's what I think) - anyone else know of a work around for this bizarre problem?

Hey guys total noob here to android and flashing ROMs. I rooted my phone and flashed to TuchMi S3X 5.0. First installed 3.0, then went to 5.0. In both builds, my SD card wouldn't mount, i'd get a message saying "Preparing SD card" in the notification bar, then "SD card is safe to remove." When attemping to mount through Settings, nothing happens, and I can't mount in recovery either.
I've tried reformatting every which way I can think of, but still no luck. The same card worked fine in stock.
Any tips? I've searched all over the place but couldn't find anything pertaining to TuchMi S3X and external SD cards not mounting.
So i've determined that the issue is with the exFAT file system. If I format the card in FAT32 it works fine, but this is a 64GB card, and I want to use exFAT.
If i let the phone format the SD card when it is unformatted, it uses exFAT but the card STILL isn't able to be mounted...do I need a custom kernel or something?

So bottom line the card still showed 64GB and worked as long as it was FAT32?
I have had my GS3 for a little over a month, rooted and had no issues, I installed another rom with no issue. Unfortunately when I tried to install a CM10 or AOKP rom, each say my ext sd card is damaged and needs to be formatted. I try to format, but it hangs and then just quits without completing the task.
I have tried formatting to fat32 on my PC, downloaded EaseUS Disk utility to format, but none seem to work. When I restore back into the previous rom, it still says damaged and then I can format and start over only in that non AOSP/AOKP rom.
I boot into recovery when the AOSP/AOKP roms are loaded and it wont even mount or format in recovery either.
Any ideas?

I think I read somewhere that in CM10/AOKP that it won't read/understand exFat very well.
So, formatting to Fat32 is definitely the way to go.
When I used some other programs it would say the same thing... that my card was damaged and had to be fixed.
I had a heck of a time finding a program that would do it for me on my 64gb sdxc SanDisk card!
But I found a free one called GUI Fat 32 Format that actually worked.
Click this link and it will start to download:
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe
It didn't work immediately, for me at first, but after a few tries it actually worked very well.
I think that once you get it into Fat32 all of your problems will go away. Hope so anyway.:cyclops:

This seems to have corrected the issue, finally

Glad it worked for you!

I had a similar issue... I flashed an AOSP ROM on my phone n it corrupted my sd card and wouldn't format. before formatting I went back to a touchwiz ROM and it still said it was a bad sd card and needed to format I ended up formatting my card in my phone and lost all my data. I put music on my sd card and removed the sd card from my phone before flashing another AOSP ROM. After I installed another AOSP ROM I re-inserted the sd card and it again said it was bad and needed to be reformatted...
So my question is...How can you use a 64gb sd card on an AOSP ROM...I'm back on touchwiz for now. Sd card works fine.
Does formatting the sd card in your phone format it to exfat and not fat32?

Wait, so you're saying that AOKP/CM10 don't have the necessary drivers to handle exFAT formatted sd cards?
Do you remember where/how you came upon this information? Was this issue particular to 64gb SDXC cards vs smaller SDHC cards or maybe to certain classes of cards?
I find this shocking, but I can't say it isn't unfounded.
I have a 64gb uhs-1 sandisk card coming from newegg in a few days, so I'm obviously concerned.
Any insight you could provide is greatly appreciated!
Hey guys... after doing some fooling around I've found out some (useful) information for people with 64 gb sd cards...
1. When you format an sd card while its inside your phone it will format it to exFat.... which is fine if you plan on only staying on TW ROMs. This format is not compatible with TWRP Recovery and has given me issues (causing me to loose all my data on my card) just by flashing an AOSP ROM
2. If you use the program posted in the second post(thanks iomega311) you can format your sd card to Fat32 and it will now work on TW ROMs, TWRP, and AOSP ROMs.
Hope this helps for anyone with SD Card Questions/issues.
In my opinion... Never program sd cards on phone... Always use a computer. Especially if you want it done right!!!!

CM 10 which all the AOSP roms are based off does not support exFAT since it is a proprietary format and they don't want any legal trouble. The best way to format a 64GB gard is with GUI formatter
What allocation size did you guys use? Just got my 64GB SDXC and need to format it so that I can use it on CM10.
Anytime I flash a non touchwiz custom ROM like liquid smooth I'm currently on, the camera will say..Insert SD card before using and won't work, I tried it with SD card and without but still won't work. Lg camera from market doesnt work either. But if I flash to touchwiz everything works fine.
Can someone please help? I want to keep this ROM
I've never had that issue. But Ive always had a SD card (my pics save fine to internal memory).
Did you full wipe?
Yes sir I did everything properly. I am having trouble with SD card removing deleting and corrupting files after I try to switch them from internal to external SD and vise versa. But even with new SD card same problem could my SD card section of my phone be damaged from rooting and recovery?
Hi,
I'm currently using Task's AOKP Rom and after performing a TWRP nandroid backup to my external sd card.. My external sd card started having problems. When I rebooted back to AOKP it showed an sd card error in the notifications asking me to reformat.
I've used this 32gb sd card for 4 months, installing various AOSP and TW JB roms with no problems at all. Yes, I wipe and flash everything correctly. This seemed to just happen randomly. I plugged my phone into my computer and it only shows my internal sd card available. When I go to mnt/extsdcard in file explorer, it shows no files.
Does anyone know a way to get my ext sd card working again? I'd like to get access to my files.
Thanks,
Tom
Update: it must just be my ext sd card... I plugged it into an adapter and it's not reading on my computer. My 8 gb version works fine but my 32 doesn't read at all. Any suggestions or is my sd card fried?
Device: HTC One M8 Bell
Firmware: CM13 Nightly
Recovery: TWRP
Android Version: 6.0.1
Security Patch: April 2, 2016
So lets start it off like this, I had this 32gb lexar micro sd card that I have been using for quite some time. I decided it was time to get a new one so I went over to amazon and bought a well regarded 64gb patriot micro sd card to replace what I have in my phone. Once it arrived I unmounted the lexar micro sd and put in the patriot micro sd. I had this strange message pop up instead of it going oh hey lets set up your storage I got unsupported lexar sd card. I decided to tap on the notification and run the sd card set up stuff multiple times and just ended up getting errors that wouldn't allow it to be mounted. The phone is detecting the new patriot 64gb micro sd card as the old lexar 32gb micro sd card. I took it out and threw the card into my desktop system running windows and boom 60 gigabytes of micro sd flash detected everything came up fine it was partitioned and everything. So I decided maybe the file system is wrong and since I couldn't format in android storage settings anywhere until the card is set up I did it in the TWRP recovery where the card is fully detected and works fine. I can move files to and from it and everything without any issues but as soon as I go into android I get unsupported lexar sd card. After a while of having no luck at all I just decided to flat out wipe everything through recovery except the micro sd card and do a fresh android install and see if any system files in android were causing it. Here I am sitting in android with this brand new install with the message in notifications "Unsupported Lexar SD card" I have dug through system files tried wiping the cache for external storage. Nothing is working I have no idea. I really do not know what it causing this. Is there anything else I can try to see if I can fix this? Thanks.
Try formatting the SD card on your PC. Folks sometimes have better luck that way, than using the phone to format.
I have tried that already in multiple formats too, I ended up leaving it in fat32 since well that is the standard filesystem supported. I had no luck with anything I even reformatted it on my phone later with twrp because I thought the filesystem windows gave it was an issue. Nope it wasn't, I still have the same unsupported sdcard error. Something really weird though, I took out the new 64fb micro SD card that was having this issue and put in some ancient sandisk 2gb microsd that I have lying around, it worked fine. Android popped up with setup for the card. I still don't think something is wrong with the 64gb patriot microsd like twrp sees and and everything that it in it. Files can be moved around and so does windows just not android

"Fresh Android install" meaning what? Did you try a different CM nightly, or another ROM (like Sense)? Maybe just a bug in the particular CM nightly.

I reinstalled a newer version of CM 13 Nightly and before that I did an advanced wipe cleaning all partitions except for micro sd, usb-otg, sd-ext. I left the micro sd because it had the cm build on it. However yes I did also wipe the micro sd card card just earlier in the day, the problem still persisted once in android.
Have you tried a low level format ? and/or partition-table reset on your SD-card, it may fix it
