Guys i just saw this
In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking mobile phones would no longer be allowed. But the librarian provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on January 26.
Unlocking a phone frees it from restrictions that keep the device from working on more than one carrier's network, allowing it run on other networks that use the same wireless standard. This can be useful to international travellers who need their phones to work on different networks. Other people just like the freedom of being able to switch carriers as they please.

Maybe this might wake some people up since it is tyranny that directly effects you .

Yeah thrs no lock in india
Sent from my GT-S5360 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
No one's going to care or know if you've unlocked your phone after this date. The government are stupid so just do it anyway.
in germany its forbidden when u have the phone in a prepaid pack, but end this year it shall be changed, says our blabla.
I would recommend just unlocking it anyway who gives a fudge about the law?
I dunno what country you're from but in the UK there are shops specifically set up for phone unlocking
It is not illegal
Unlocking your phone may invalidate your warranty if not done by the manufacturer or phone network provider
Making phone unlocking illegal would be a direct breech of the monopoly act
Companies may lock phones - companies may charge to unlock phones - but to make it illegal for them to be unlocked is in itself illegal
Marcus no offense but did u even read the link what u quoted makes no sense since those laws would only apply to the country where u live I simply stated that it has now become illegal in a part of the world and by illegal I mean illegal as in u could get arrested it will obviously go unenforced but that doesn't matter u can now if u live in the USA be arrested if u unlock your phone within a contract period

oh, i have the same question
UK residents should be aware that it is a criminal offence to change the IMEI number of a phone and if you are found doing it for other people you can get upto five years.
I love it when instead of answering peoples questions with an actual answer, someone feels the need to tell you how bad/illegal/wrong, it is to do what your doing. But then when you go back and look at older threads, or even on other forums, you see that same person asking the same question you asked, a year or two earlier. But once they know the answering, they tell everyone else not to do it, not to ask, and they can go to jail, blah blah blah. Unreal. Its sad when certain forums are 30% legitimate questions, and 60% "troll answers", and 10% real answers. It sucks when you have to go through reading 3 days worth of bull**** to get the answer to a question that is fairly basic, and in the old days would have been answered, and if there was no known answer, everyone would have worked TOGETHER to find one. Those days are obviously long gone, as everyone is more interested in "getting mine", and making, or think theyre going to make, that whopping $10 charge to give you that answer or do that service for you. Even though its "illegal". Ya its illegal, until you pay them, then legality all of a sudden is no longer an issue. Funny how that works right?
I would think XDA would be the place where "Devs" come up with solutions without judging! This is the whole idea of places like this. Where we do things we want to do with our devices. It can be getting rid of malware, junkware. Developing awesome skins, ROMs, apps. We circumvent operator practices to stifle our beautiful hardwares so why not develop easier ways to stop the government from blocking our freedom to use/buy devices and use them freely on any network!

What I should write more - nothing. You have to read this:
Software piracy has become an extremely controversial subject lately. We all know SOPA and PIPA. But when it comes down to the very personal scale of app development, one must question the true wrongdoing in obtaining free software. We have debated this internally at WPH, and while our major developers have voted against it, the new blood here has decided to make a modest proposal. Leave it to the hands of the users.
We've heard many arguments against obtaining cracked applications, all of which are erroneous. Some claim it hurts homebrew, and has resulted in the extreme locking down of the WP7 operating system. Others claim it robs developers who spend hours developing, and takes away from the income of not large, greedy corporations, but rather, personal developers who may have families to support, or education to fund. Others claim it is just morally wrong, and shows a degrading of character when something so cheap is still seen unworthy of personal dimes.
This application is subject to the disclaimer that you use it under your own moral obligations and local laws. Essentially, this application installs a DRM store to your phone that causes the Marketplace to unlock all trial applications, and circumvent charging users for purchases. It's easy and effective. We can't say we support it, and don't know how long it will be until Microsoft patches it, as they are historically very quick and organized in bug fix updates.

Hi everyone,
I got my Lumia 900 from AT&T unlocked today, so I thought I share some pics with you because there are a lot of threads/people suggesting that its IMPOSSIBLE to unlock "period"
I got the code from gsmunlocklabs dot com - I took the admin's permission to let you guys know but he told me to stress the fact that it takes 20 days to get the code if not more so you don't set your expectations too high. I have submitted my IMEI early July and got my code just today!

I d0n't think it's a good idea to unlock a brand new cellphone... not even if it's a nokia!
20 days would basically take us to Oct 8 so it would be a waste of money now.

don't trust smart a$$ members too. you know, those who pretend to know it all?
I think we would save alot of heartache if we used the proper words when describing this topic. I was reminded of this a few moments ago when reading a wpcentral bit on the pricing of the 920. Besides the 2yr contracts, comments were made about unlocked prices.
This sounds very similar to the conversations here earlier about 900 pricing.
The 920, like the 900, will sell with a No Contract price, not an unlocked price.
We know the problem is with interpretation. No Contract foes not equal Unlocked.
So, there is no unlocked Nokia 900 from AT&T. There could be a Nokia 900 unlocked by AT&T. We know there will NO Unlocked Nokia 920's from AT&T. You will be able to purchase one No Contract. Remember the difference.
Well since people can't leave the thread alone. Locked
If today I receive the new Samsung, ( the safe, green battery), can I fly tomorrow?

I dunno. But i can tell you that if is true than 10 October finally I am going to grab this object, I will bring with me everywhere.
Nobody is succesfully traveling at the moment with the new sammy, on a fly that before were interdicting it?
Call a flight attendant a "hostess" and you'll have bigger problems than your Note7. I flew with my old pre-replacement Note7 turned off and on my tray table on American and Delta. No one noticed or cared. If they do notice or care I'd suggest printing out and carrying the following. You can also show them your device is OK using the Samsung+ app. I highly doubt you'll be asked unless a member of the flight crew is also a mobile device enthusiast.

fair enough Barry. Just last week i flew with Transavia, it was written at the moment of the check in, that I could not bring my note 7, not that I have to have a new eligible one. I really hope that Samsung, will manage this contacting every fly agency, because the Samsung target is also one that flies imo.

You could have flown with the old one.
Take your old receipt for the original and the new receipt for the new one. I doubt that could be argued with.
I totally sympathise with flight crew who are security conscience, if they apply rules to me I feel rather happy knowing they are just the same with all passengers and their has been a small problem with the Note 7 so at 11,000M I agree with very high security.
What concerns me is the attitude of a tiny minority who are refusing to change mobiles despite knowing the situation. Very selfish attitude especially as Samsung has agreed to change all 'old' devices.

Only if your a selfish 'person' (add your own expletive). We don't live in a vacuum so we have to be aware of our civic duty to others. All for freedom but abuse of freedom like that is dangerous.

My phone's IMEI is changed without root and I'm on Android 11 rn. In my country you have to pay a heavy tax to use imported phones so I replaced my phone's IMEI with another phone IMEI which is already registered with government. Now I can use phone with sim normally. But what if I update to android 12 then will my IMEI be reset to original IMEI of my phone because if that happens I won't be able to use sim without paying tax that's actually more then the price of phone.
I got OnePlus 9 pro and I'm in Pakistan and IMEI is changed with a s7 edge whose tax was already paid.

@Sarmad00 Thread closed!
Edit or change of IMEI is illegal in quite a few of countries. For this reason, I've closed and edited your thread! XDA doesn't allow and doesn't accept discussions about or support for such an edit or change.

Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things which will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably shouldn't do it here either. It simply means that you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with the legal hassle caused by you.
