Anyone confirm that WiFi Tether for Root Users works on our handset (or any recommendations for Wi-Fi router) or will T-Mobile still block it?
Would prepaid make a difference? I only plan to use it on rare occasions but so far I'm not using anywhere near my 5GB of 4G unlimited data as I generally have access to fast fiber Wi-Fi..
- Thnx

I am currently on the T-Mobile unlimited data plan (no paid hotspot add on is even available) and after quite a bit of messing around with my phone this is how I was able to get wifi hotspot working.
1.) Root your phone - http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-note-ii-xda-developer-tv/
2.) Freeze tethering provision using Titanium Backup Pro (available in Play Store)
3.) Download TrevE’s modded wifi tether app for root users http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35476525
4.) Download Hotspot Shield VPN from Play Store
*When tethering to my Asus Transformer, all I need to do is activate the hotspot and it works flawlessly. If you want to tether to your laptop or Xbox 360, you need to active the VPN first, then start the hotspot (if you do not start the VPN first you will be brought to the dreaded T-Mobile upsell page on your PC and your Xbox 360 will not be able to download anything or connect to Xbox Live). The VPN stops T-Mobile from packet sniffing, which is what causes the upsell page to being with.
Thanks JB910, I will try those steps when I get a chance but was planning this easier wireless root method instead since my handset still has the pre T889UVALL4 OTA update Exynos exploit. Also just out of curiosity yesterday I tried Hotspot Shield VPN to run alongside FoxFi which did not work as it still brought the T-Mobile page but I did run a where's my IP & it was a South Korean IP, everyone trusts Hotspot Shield VPN when it's needed (nice to read not in all use cases but still many or most cases)?
I would likely only use it rarely as a backup on PCs-tablets but am now more motivated to root if this proves workable.. - Thnx

haha omg thanks so much I've been trying to figure all that out for myself
So with the help from you I was able to get it working as follows:
1) I rooted according to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37188698&postcount=28
2) Installed WifiTether-TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012_driverReload2 (defaults to Wifi Driver Reload 2) - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390208427046731813 with settings changes as outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35476525 & attached thumbnails at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37109011&postcount=7 . . Once I checked the boxes next to connected authorized clients as shown in last thumbnail (after putting in Wi-Fi passwords on devices) I was able to connect 5 handy devices simultaneously (Cr-48 Chromebook, Windows Notebook, EVO 4G, someone's iPhone & iPad). Interestingly I was able to browse websites on the two notebooks running full speedtests & checking sites for about 10-20 min non-continuously before getting the http://offers.t-mobile.com/tethering/upsell.do?source=redirect which I don't think I can even add to my prepaid plan. At this point I had to run Hotspot Shield VPN to continue browsing with the notebooks at 10% speeds (mobile devices like EVO 4G & iOS devices did not need Hotspot Shield VPN to continue so could I try to changing desktop client settings in Chrome or Firefox to avoid use of Hotspot Shield VPN?? that http://whatismyipaddress.com identified this time as ISP: nLayer Communications Organization: GIGLINX Services: Suspected Network Sharing Device City: Torrance Region:California rather than South Korea when first tested Hotspot Shield VPN or T-Mobile USA when off).
Again I don't plan on abusing this rather using it as a backup on occasion as I usually have access to fast fiber Wi-Fi. Will T-Mobile further make this an issue assuming I don't abuse this on my prepaid account? -Thnx

Ok, so before I got the dreaded message telling me that tmobile knew i was tethering and made me pay for a new play that included tethering.
Are you guys saying that being rooted, I can change my plan to the unlimited, and even though tethering is not allowed, I can still do it and never worry about going over my 5gb and being throttled?

If you run through a vpn they can't. It encrypts your data so they can't packet sniff.

I have a Q, Im running the CM RC-2 and Wireless Tether isnt working, but if i go into setting->Wireless & Network Setting, on the bottom it says Tethering and Portable Hotspot.
If i Connect via USB and activate it, WILL I GET CHARGED thru Sprint ? Or is like using Wireless Tether program other then its being connected thru USB and not a Wifi Hotspot/Router.
I personally have UNLIMITED DATA for my Evo, I have the Everything Plus Family Plan which has Unlimited Data.
Thanks
If you don't have the $30 hotspot, the native tethering will usually fail.
If you don't have the $30 hotspot and want to tether anyway (usually "free" in that Sprint doesn't do anything about it at this point in time), and if you are rooted, you can use Wired Tether for Root Users or a few other apps, such as the ones for non-rooted users.
If you aren't rooted, your selection narrows to PDA Net, EasyTether, and a few other select choices, often where you're required to install software on the computer you're tethering to and these apps often range between $10-30 for the full version (allowing HTTPS), or free/cheaper for HTTP only.

Thanks for the info but that does not really answer my Question. See pics below. If i check one of the boxes, Will i be charged anything ??? Its like a integrated Tether i guess ??
CyanogenMod's tethering (via the Settings>Wireless networks) is 100% free unless Sprint decides to start doing some DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) on all cellular traffic, which is seriously unlikely given that the technology for that is extremely expensive, and Sprint needs to be focusing on rolling out more 4G towers rather than getting special hardware to watch what you're doing online.

Thanks I appreciate Everyones help and quick answers
according to this article:
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/08/t-mo...d-nationwide-4g-data-plan-with-press-release/
T-Mobile will finally allow you to have an unlimited data plan (with no throttling, and no data caps) in other words, this is real unlimited not pseudo-unlimited.
however if you read the article i posted above, it says tethering hotspot not allowed.
So here is the question.
how many of you on the GSM version Samsung Galaxy Nexus have successfully used the stock tethering feature of the galaxy nexus WHILE BEING ON t-mobile's new unlimited 4G data plan where tethering is not allowed?
I have a HTC sensation and can use stock hotspots with a custom apn unlock for tmo
Grogg is the developer
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
are you on t-mobile's new unlimited 4G plan I mentioned in that article I posted?
I dont know what a "custom apn unlock for tmo" is.
right now, this is how i tether,i go to the tethering menu in system settings, and i checkmark "portable w-fi hotspot"
and that's it , i'm done.
would upgrading to t-mobile's new fancy unlimited no data caps no throttling 4G internet cause me to have to jump through hoops just to tether?
Has ANYONE taken advantage of t-mobile's new unlimited 4G data plans? the ones with no throttling and no data caps? i assume this would be easy enough for anyone to test their tethering feature if they've signed up for the new data plan. if you have the new data plan please let me know.
The GNex won't ask T-Mobile for permission to tether, and the traffic will look like mobile traffic. So the only way they can stop you is if they are sniffing out red flags like browser user agent strings. If they do that you might be able to punch through if you have access to a VPN.
You could always try it for a month and see. If you aren't happy, change back to another plan.
Or you could decide not to go breaking T-Mobile's T&C.
I've done it w my unlocked Gnex with success. Was linked up to 4 devices yesterday took up 2.3 GBs once done.
#Galaxy Nexus HSPA+
I've tethered on my Gnex with success also. but my dilemma is that i'm on a grandfathered $20 per month unlimited 4G internet plan as an add-on to my minutes plan, and it works great for tethering.
luckylui, you are on the new $30 unlimited data plan right?
i would like it if someone would not only confirm that they could tether successfully, but if they are also using t-mobile's new no-tethering allowed 4G internet to tether.
There's nothing T-Mobile can do to stop tethering on the unlimited plan that they can't already do on any of their other plans. You're using a Nexus, so they don't have custom firmware to block. The only thing they can do is block certain UAstrings of desktop browsers (which they're shying away from since Chrome for Android came out), or cancel your plan for abuse.

I have the new no-throttling plan and I'm currently tethering via Wi-Fi hotspot. This is actually the first time I've ever used it (tried before and it nothing happened; guess I wasn't patient enough). So far, I've done a few speed tests and some light browsing without issue. My data is also $20/month, btw.
I have the nexus s, on the past I had the gradgathered not truly unlimited 5gb plan that one worked good for tethering the only problem that it had 5gb restriction then it slowed down no were it was really unpleasant to see youtube videos. Now I have the new unlimited plan for tethering is weird when I try to use it on my computer it tells me local access apps like messenger don't connect until I use firefox then they're able to connect and it works fine on firefox. On the other hand when I try to connect it on internet explorer this weird t-mobile's page comes up not letting me connect to the internet offering the hotspot add on for $15/month. Also when I tether to my ps3 is not working anymore the same t-mobile page comes up, and of course the fu**ing rooted tether app does not work with ps3 wifi so right now I'm on the look up of an app that lets my rooted nexus s tether to my ps3 or a way to tether normally without that t-mobile page coming up. Oooh and a tip you can get a monthly discount of about $10 fldollars if you been with t-mobile for a long time just ask for it.

T-Mobile is detecting the UAstring of the browser, seeing one that isn't available via the Android handset itself, and blocking. That's why when you browse on IE (or the PS3 browser) it knows that you're not on your phone.
You can try using a UAstring switcher extension/addon for Chrome/Firefox, its worked for me.

Because like I said, they detect tethering based on UAstring, which is how your browser tells pages what device it is. So it doesn't matter what program, ROM, or anything you use because when you eventually get to the site you'll identify as a desktop and they'll block it.
I had a HTC Sensation and now have a S3, both of which have been rooted and AOSP ROMs flashed. That has been working fine for me. Don't use Chrome. My girls Nexus S with any combo of ROMs doesn't tether anymore.

I just got onto Tmobile from verizon for the unlimited data. If this is the case (the UAstring is what's preventing tethering) then using a VPN connection should fix that right?
Set up the VPN on your phone, connect to it, then set up your tethering. Then Tmobile should have no idea what you're doing, or where the data is being used, other than the fact that all the data is being pushed through a VPN server.
I haven't tried tethering yet just because i wanna know the full extent to which tmobile is able to monitor tethering techniques.
Standard practice is that when a phone is connected to VPN and tethering, the tether bypasses the VPN.
So really the VPN should be initiated from the device that is connected to the phone, not from the phone.

Don't some mobile providers sniff for pings to Windows update server? I remember reading that if you didn't have a tethering plan and they saw pings to the widows update server they would tell you to stop. Otherwise they would add a tethering plan to your account.

Now that we have root and customer recovery, has anyone been able to get free wifi tethering with the TMobile Galaxy Note 3?
I tried different settings with the wifi tether app on the play store but cant get it to start up without errors.
Anyone have any input?
You get 2.5 gigs free from tmo on the native hot spot. Have you tried that?

Yeah, I burned through that already. I had a iPhone 5S that I had free tethering mod on and currently at 52GB on data on TMobile and my 2.5GB is also already used up lol.
Now on Note 3, currently looking for a way to enable free wifi tethering since my Comcast connection is currently turned off.
I have the Wifi Thering app but dont know which settings work for the Note 3.
I may have to wait until the custom roms are cooked up with unlocked tethering baked in.

Oh this method still requires the UA switcher. Nothing will bypass that part since its done on T-Mobile's servers. I thought you were automatically getting redirected to T-Mobile upsell page even with the UA switcher.

Changing my UA works fine. I was thinking there was a hack or work around so that the HotSpot would work perfect on any device. PS3 and XBox ect...
I hear you man I use 10 gigs a day, just use UA switcher set to Safari on chrome and you can tether to your heart's desire. All websites look normal with that setting and Netflix won't give you the download app for mobile message lol. There hasn't been a wifi tether fix for quite some time regardless of the phone as far as I know, its a common request in most forums regardless of device or carrier. Anyway like I said I tether 10 gigs a day using T-Mobile hotspot with no throttling either but according to them they do throttle regular data unless your on the highest data/tether plan. So if you keep the lowest tether plan you can get unlimited tethering with UA switcher or hopefully with a workaround eventually but your data will be throttled at some point for all data unless you bump up your plan.

I'm currently not on any tethering plans. I'm rooted but otherwise stock. When I turn tethering on and using a User Agent Spoofer on my PC try to access the web, I get the upsell page. Am I doing something wrong? Also there are several UA spoofers for Chrome. Can someone tell me which one they're using that actually works please? Perhaps you can reference the developer's name, etc.

Sorry I assumed you had tethering since the Simple Choice plan comes with 500mb included in the 50 dollar plan. Then you could simply use UA Spoofer on Chrome, if your on some sort of prepaid thing without any tethering included then I have no clue except use Pda Net for now.
why not just buy the easytether app?
That way it will use your data rather than hotspot

I'm on a business plan with 100% unlimited everything (no data throttling, etc.) Am I supposed to be getting some free tethering with mine?!

Here is the quote from T-Mobile site for business account:
"Besides unlimited talk, text, and web, your Simple Choice for Business plan includes up to 500 MB of high-speed data. But if you need more, you can add extra data to any line. All data plans are unlimited while on T-Mobile’s network." "Add 2 GB to your included 500 MB of high-speed data. Smartphone Mobile HotSpot included. Speeds slowed after 2.5 GB."
Call them up and have them activate it on your phone, I had to call for my kid's iPhone but mine was working out of the box.

When you spoof it uses your regular data, personally I have the paid App Klink Red Edition but it stopped working when I switched to T-Mobile. No need to pay a few dollars for an app when you can do it free but Pda-Net works great and it is cheap enough, still it uses spoofing as well just from in the app and not at the browser end, I'm pretty sure all the tethering apps make it look like your using data from your device.
Anyone get VPN working? Mine stops routing when I connect.
I start the Hotspot tethering app first and then start PIA VPN app.

I set up tethering the other day. I dont burn through data like some of you, but im curious about the limit. Is that 2.5gig limit tied to the 2.5gig lte (then hspa drop) data plan limit? Or is it just a 2.5gigs of tethering regardless of your plan and then no more tethering for the month? Furthermore, when you exceed that amount, im taking it from these posts that the tethering app stops accepting connections and you're not just dropped to the hspa network? I dont think ill hit that limit, i only use tethering for remote access when im on call and out and about. But it would be good to know for sure.

It won't work. Only way is to use a UA spoofer for no slowdown or hide your vpn which will slow down data. Used to root right away just to use his wifi tether but heck I don't think that method has worked in months.
This is one of my biggest problem ATM. I need tether. Been using Wifi Tether TrevE Mod on GS3 and it work great. Keep posting we need a solution for this.
So I'm on the only one with this problem. .. I'm using Darthstalker ROM which has unrestricted native tethering. The only sites that work are Google and YouTube only works the rest just doesn't load or I get the "Oops!*Google*Chrome could not connect to___" message. Sigh....
Someone recommend to switch from lte to 4g-3g-E connection, but that didn't work for me.

I mentioned this twice yesterday that after I flashed Darthstalker I could only visit a couple of websites whereas before I could go anywhere. I tried everything but had to go back to stock. You can have unlimited tethering using one of two methods, either just use native tethering and use UA Spoofer extension with chrome browser set to Safari or pay for PDA Net and set it to level 1 hiding usage.
If you decide to pay for PDA Net then you can stay with Darthstalker rom, go ahead and try it out for free before you buy it. Remember if you go the spoofer way then websites will not see you as Chrome, doesn't affect me at all since they format correctly and Netflix works. Unlimited tethering either way. I have paid app Klink Red Edition which did this for me with previous phones but it stopped working fyi.
Im currently using the US spoofer on the google chrome on my desktop, but there has to be a way to get full tether unlock with out throtling from TMobile.
I use to do it all the time and tether my PS3 and XBOX 360 back when I had Sprint and back when they had WiMax 4G on there phones.
TMobile must have some technology on there end that throttles on the server side so the hacking cant be done on the device end it sounds like.
Thanks everyone for the effort, I guess it's time just to suck it up and face the facts thar TreVe mod is a no-go on the Note 3. I'm just going to stick to using the US spoofer.

Why are so many people asking for tethering stuff? Doesn't tmobile allow tethering? At least they do for me. They also seem to allow me to go WAY over the 2.5gb of 4g. I have never gotten throttled...ever. And I usually hit ~5gb a month. I love tmobile
I'll be getting a tmobile note 3 on tomorrow. Do I need to root in order to enable tethering (using the spoofer) or can I just activate the native tethering app (without rooting) and then set the spoofer in chrome. Right now, I have tethering on my Note 2 but it involved me having to root the phone and then using trevmod wifi tether. Even then, I still have to set up the spoof in Chrome.
I'm on stock but rooted ROM. Don't TrevE mod set up on mine yet, but you folks saying you can just use a UA Spoofer, are you talking about with TrevE mod or just the native hotspot? I tried the stock tethering using Chrome User Agent Spoofer, but still I got the up sell page... which is why I'm confused...

Your right they are great, they don't charge for roaming or going over your tethering limit but only state they may throttle data. Thing is they can throttle your regular data non tethered unless your on the truly 100% unlimited data, I use 100's of gigs a month the majority tethered so its people like me that are more likely to get throttled lol.

Native hotspot plus UA Spoofer in Chrome or try Pda Net trial. Some times you need to play around a little with the spoof settings using different spoofs until you stop seeing the upsell. As long as you have a plan that includes the free 500mb tethering otherwise your native app may not be live, in that case try PdaNet. I'm on a simple choice family plan with two lines and I upgraded my data to truly unlimited for $20 more a month to avoid any throttling issues. The last time I got TrevE to work it was so slow it became unuseable, this was back on my S4. I believe it has problems on most devices for a couple of months now on at least Sprint and T-Mobile that I know of.
My daughter can make a wifi hotspot with her iPhone 5 and she uses her laptop with the spoofer no problems, my laptop won't connect to hotspot so I am tethering via usb on my Note 3 but I think its a problem with my laptop antenna or something. Still we are both tethering day and night since our phones are our only internet connections at home, we don't have cable since we stream Netflix and I download my favorite shows and movies.

Sadly, that's for a different plan. I'm on the prepaid, $30 a month, 5gig of 4g data, unlimited 3g data, 100 minutes, unlimited text messages.

Hi. I have the $30 prepaid plan (100min talk, 5GB data and unlimited text) I should be able to get 100Mb data via mobile hot spot but it does not seem to work properly. I am able to connect a device via hot spot but that's it. No data is transmitted. My account says I have used 0 of my hot spot data. Any ideas? Thanks!
EDIT: I just came back from my local Tmoble store and the salesperson there told me that there is no tethering allowed with my current plan. I would need to pay $15 extra per month and the tethering data would come off my 5GB data. That sound right? I guess that is still not too bad as a regular plan is $60 per month instead of the $45 I would now have to pay. Any thoughts?

I used the tethering add-on for $15 quite a while back, and it took data from the 5gb. There doesn't seem to be any special allotment on the $30 plan like there is for other plans. I also was never able to gain access the 100mb that I had read comes with the plan for free. All tethering does seem to be blocked on this particular plan until you either add the $15 add-on option, or you root and install a 3rd party program that will enable tethering.
What tethering apps do you guys use on your note 3?

I also vote for Fabios WiFi Tether router, I've had an issue and he kept working through it with me without delay. I usually got a response from him within 30 minutes.
I also run Private Internet Access VPN app on the phone, any device that connects to the hotspot is automatically encrypted through the VPN so Tmo can't tell what kind of traffic it is. I've used 30 gigs a month this way for months without an issue.

Thanks for the info!
1. Is Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN app free?
I read somewhere about a $35 annual fee, but perhaps that is not needed?
2. So by encrypting the traffic, you're saying T-Mobile does not know whether the traffic is standard data usage (e.g. web browsing on the Note 3 itself) or whether the traffic (data being used) is from running a hotspot on the Note 3 and connecting to it from an external device (laptop, table etc.)?
Just interested in understanding the technology and alternatives better (I have not needed wifi tethering on my Note 3 so far, not even the included 2.5 GB but I enjoy understanding it all either way).
I have 2 methods that I use on my phone.
FIRST THING IS TO CREATE THE EXACT SAME TMOBILE APN EXCEPT CHANGE IT FROM IP6 TO IP4.
TO BE EXACT I JUST CREATE A 2ND APN AND IN THE WAP FIELD I USE "fast.t-mobile.com" I LEAVE ALL OTHER FIRLD BLANK.
When I want to send a MMS I just activate the TMobile Stock APN. When I tether I activate my custom APN.
Now the 1st method I use is using the STOCK TETHERING option.
Activate the Stock APN and Turn On Stock Tethering. "This is IF you have the 2.5GB tethering on your account. After the tethering is activated, on the computer you have to use a custom UA string on your web browser. For me I use "Google Chrome" and I installed the plugin "Ultimate User Agent Switcher" and I use the "Kindle" option. This will allow for full web access and TMobile will think your using a Kindle tablet.
Torrents also work since you have the ip4 APN activated.
My 2nd method is using USB Tethering to my PC with PDANet. Install PDANet on your phone and on the PC. And also have the custom APN activated in network settings. In PDANet Settings, go to HIDE TETHER USAGE VERSION 2. This will allow for FULL web use without the need for changing UA Strings.
With this method, I am also able to share the connection to my LAN port which is hooked to my NetGear Router so i can then ((RESHARE)) the connection again to my XBOX and PS3 and other devices allowing them to just connect to my router as normal.
Those are the 2 methods I use. I have LTE in my area and I do about 4MB/s or 40Mbps on average.
For this current month I have used at least 107GB for the month even though my plan is 2.5GB...

Thanks a lot for the detailed instructions and info.
I am a noob with Note 3 tethering options since I have not needed it at all (not even the 2.5 GB included), so I appreciate the specifics to help my understanding.
QUESTION re. method 1, "stock tethering, stock APN but UA switcher and custom UA profile (I assume this custom profile is done via UA switcher"?):
Does this method allow streaming on the connected device (laptop or tablet)? I.e. do I just need to go to my web browser to 'activate' the tethering connection?
Or do I need to do USB tethering with PDANet to allow streaming on the device that is tethered to my Note 3?
Thanks again!

1. PIA service is not free, I got a deal off of slickdeals.net that came to something around $22 a year if I'm not mistaken. But even at $35 I think its worth it. I use it on my home PC and all my mobile devices. I don't need an ISP seeing what I browse
2. Yes, you're correct about T-Mobile not being able to differantiate the traffic. Once I forgot to turn on VPN and after a while I got redirected to their page stating that I've exceeded the allowance. As soon as I engaged VPN I was able to browse right away again.
3. Sure there are free alternatives that might work, but with this solution I know I'm 100% safe not only from exceeding my allowance but also from any other prying eyes

Using VPN does work. The problem I had with using a VPN is that you dont get your full 4G or full LTE speed since all your data has to be encrypted to go through the VPN server.
Using the 2 methods I provided you not only get to bypass the 2.5 GB but you all get FULL 4G LTE speeds to your tethered devices.

Streaming on either of my methods work. If you go with the stock wifi tether, you just have to change your APN settings under network opetion on your phone from ip6 to ip4. THis is done by just creating a NEW APN and put in "fast.t-mobile.com" for your APN setting. After that is done, you can tether to other tablets or phones perfectly since those are mobile devices. For computers you have to change the UA String of your browser to a tablet or android device.
If you use the PDA Net method, you dont have to change the UA String, since the program itself has a way of blocking what kind of traffic is going through.

Sharing the connection to my home Netgear router even extends the connection even further.

I use PDANet to Tether my phone via USB.
After that connection is established, depending on your version of windows, run your router to the LAN port on your computer and in NetWork Settings in Windows, set up ICS which is Internet Connection Sharing.
After that, you may have to power cycle the router to pick up the ip address and all that but from there, everything connected to the router will get full web access also. PDANet has a feature in the settings to hide your data traffic similer to using VPN so all data is counted as Phone Data and not Tethering.
At this rate, may be a while before I turn my Comcast back on. LTE also provides low latency and ping numbers.
Only down side I can see if during online games, when the NAT is more complex due to all the routing going on.

I use my tethering mostly for playing a few online games while I am at work(They really don't expect me to work the WHOLE time do they). It sounds like the second option would work better for me since the first option requires a UA switcher which you can't really for for say World of Warcraft. Is that accurate?
Why wouldn't you use wifi hotspot? Just curious. Weighing my options. Btw, thanks, I'm tethered using pdanet!
