I had the first KF, after numerous replacements that said they would send me a KF 2nd gen non-hd. Well I just got it in the mail today and I'm wondering on how to tell if it is the 2nd gen kf?
If it is do KF ROMs work on the KF2 as well?
One last ?. What is the easiest way to root the KF2 non-HD? Will the same methods work on the KF2 as they did on the first KF?

To check if its a second gen. GO to the setttings. and then device. and if the software version says anything but 6.3.1 or 6.3.0 then its a second gen.
second: if you did some research , they dont work on the second gen.
and finally third. look in here for a way to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1789

Hello, everyone. I'm having some trouble trying to figure out how to install twrp so I can flash my Kindle Fire with ICS.
I'm having a lot of trouble trying to figure it out for some reason, this is what I've done so far.
I couldn't figure out how to properly set up the Kindle Fire Utility so I looked for an alternative
and managed to root my Kindle Fire with "QemuRoot_v1.0". After it worked, I went back to
KFU and installed the the google apps/play store using "Kindle_Fire_Utility_v0.9.6".
So the Kindle Fire is rooted and found this guide on how to install twrp but I can't figure out
how to configure it. I have installed terminal emulator, busybox, and goomanager but didn't
see the file I needed "devs/smirkis" so I downloaded the dropbox link.
I'm not sure were I should put the zip or how to flash it, different forums suggested using
a file manager and changing the extension to .apk but it doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
Okay your headed south with this one real fast. Do you have a 1st gen. Kindle or 2nd because if it's a 2nd gen you cannot install a recovery or ics. QemuRoot_v1.0 is for the 2nd gen. Kindle small chance it could work on 1st gen. but I doubt it, which leads me to believe your kindle is 2nd gen. and your headed towards a permanent brick that there's no rescue for.
I'm gonna agree with The Pooch here, but if by a slim chance that your kindke is a first gwn, then you could just put the smirkit scripts into system/ect and try running them from terminal your self but I wpulnd recommend it because we aren't sure about your kindle yet..

Hmm.. I'm note entirely sure what it is. It's the 7in Display with 8Gb; was 159 and has the ads on lock screen (can't be taken away). Like I said I was only able to get QemuRoot_v1.0 to work, at the moment I have the Play Store, and a bunch of other apps like the terminal and droidwall.
I assume that the 2nd gen could be the Kindle Fire HD? Sorry about the late reply.
Yeah its 2nd gen. like I said do not attempt to flash a recovery or a bootloader to that device or it will be permanently bricked a really fine 159$ hockey puck!!!

no im pretty sure its the first gen the the model number is the D01400
How you are in 10.2.4 in a 1st gen? For what I can understand 10.2.4 is only for the 2nd gen. 1st gen don't have a camera and 2nd gen does.
Second gen doesn't have a camera. It looks like there's some confusion here, so I'll explain the types of fire.
Kindle Fire 1st gen - this is the one that you can install custom roms on because the bootloader can be unlocked. This model has 512mb ram and a 1ghz dual core cpu.
Kindle Fire 2012 revision (second gen, original fire, non-hd, also called the fire 2) - this is the one that runs 10.x.x firmware, has 1 gb ram, 1.2ghz dual core cpu, but can only be rooted at this point due to locked bootloader. This is the one OP most likely has.
Kindle Fire HD 7" - this is the one with a camera, bluetooth, Mic, and can do 720p video
Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Wi-Fi - same as 7" but can do 1080p
Kindle Fire HD 8.9" WAN - same as 8.9" Wi-Fi but has aGPS

Thanks for clearing that up agentfusion, i received a fire for xmas but after reading the forums was getting a little confused with 1st gen which i thought i had and 2nd gen on 10.2.4 which is the one im guessing i have
My brother and I also recieved what appear to be the 2012 revision, or Kindle Fire 2. Seems original, no camera.
I tried to root one of them before I checked the firmware revision. It came as 10.1.1, and the other was 10.1.2.
The one I tried unsuccessfully (thus far) to root auto updated to 10.2.4 last night.
I will be somewhat upset if I am not able to load Android on to either of these devices. Any thoughts?
EDIT: I actually read guitarman2010's comment, and I can't wait to get off and try to get these things rooted with the thread he posted. Thanks a lot man.
Ok i am trying to prep my KF2 for custom rom install and can't find any rooting method for 6.3.2. So i tried to update to the latest stock software on the KF2 and nothing work, sync for over the air wifi and manual nothing takes. I reset to factory clean and still won't take best i get is the update button will light up once i place the update on the kindle but all it does it start to update then deletes the file from itself! KFU is only for first gen and will brick my device, can't install ADB drivers and wouldn't matter if i did at this point for 6.3.2 on the KF2 has no option to enable such feature. About all i have done was install the SDK for android provided in the KF2 root forums. I am totally new to this and want to rid myself of amazon rom and its limitations so any help on how to root 6.3.2 on a second gen kindle fire would be greatly appreciated.
There is no 6.3.2 for the kf2.
I think you may have an original kindle

You have to boot up in unsigned driver mode and install the drivers manually through device manager
Just be careful. Make sure you only follow directions in the first gen forums. The model number is the same for first and second generation, but the device is way different. You can always tell which one you have by the software version.

I am hoping that someone may be able to give me some advise or point in the correct direction. I have read and search for months and have not found anything that works in rooting my kindle fire 1st gen v.6.3.3. I have tried using windows and linux pc's and nothing seems to work for me.
So I gues the first question is .....Can this kindle fire be rooted ?
second ....................................What method and proceedure works ?
I have adb installed, I have tried Soupkit, RootPlus, Burrito, KFU (all versions) just to name a few of the methods that I have tried. Nothing works, the kindle fire just keeps right on ticking the Amazon way.
Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
