Just about to root my desire HD before flashing a new ROM. Before anyone blasts me, I have read around and searched a lot but I can't really see one definitive place where all the info is. So if you've got this far, I only wanted to check I was going about it the right way before cracking on.
I've got the 'Advance Ace Hack Kit' from here > http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
I've read the 'effen manual'.
I've read a lot in here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30007255
I've seen this : http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/
So I think to root my phone and achieve S-OFF I can simply let the Advance Ace Hack kit do its thing, step by step. At which point my phone shoulo then be rooted with CWM installed and I can then flash a new ROM (after dropping .zip on SDCARD).
I've seen 4EXT mentioned in the android development section, I guess this is an alternative to CWM rather than mandatory.
Really I just wanted a few votes of 'that looks right' or 'you've missed some stuff, don't do it like that'.
It doesn't seem that complicated, which is what I'm bothered about. I've flashed previous handsets, just not droids yet.
Sounds about right. Just read the effen manual again.
Yes, 4ext is an alternative, both have a touch version.
For future reference, if you have a question, it goes in the Q&A thread.

Hi,
Been looking through the abundance of information trying to understand where to start. Is there a complete, step-by-step idiots guide to help me?
I have a GSM Desire.
I would like the ability to extend the phone memory onto the SD card. Fed up of low memory issues.
I think I need to root the phone - seems easy enough using Unrevoked 3.21.
Then what do I do next?
At the end, ideally, I would have the following
1. The ability to add/remove apps which I don't use from the stock solution.
2. A backup image so I an return my phone back to stock (just in case)
3. A way to unroot phone (in case of a warranty return)
Some of the links I've found whilst trying to understand this are dead. So I'm concerned that following any instructions may be out-of-date as my phone has had OTA updates. Really don't wanna brick it!
FYI, running 2.10.405.2, HBOOT 093.0001, Radio 5.09.05.30_2
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Pete
Look properly. Go to the Everything Desire thread in Android Development forum and have a bloody look. Seriously.
Thanks for the pointer to the "Everything Desire" thread.
I may be just missing it, but I can't find it.
I have looked under the Forum home but there is no Android Dev forum.
Additionally, I have looked under, and searched for, in the HTC Desire->Desire Android Development for a thread called "Everthing Desire" but it's not there.
I appreciate that this is probably 2nd nature to many folk out here now, but it's a lot more tricky to work out what is the latest info for someone just starting out.
It's just confusing (to a newbie) the differences/uses of clockwork recovery, amon_ra, cyanogenmod etc.
I found this link which looked promising http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814381&highlight=desire but the interesting bits (post 2 and 3) are incorrectly linked.
If "Everything Desire" is where I should start, could you point me at a direct link.
Thanks

Thanks. I'll look through that link. Looks comprehensive
Hi - first of all, to make it clear, I'm kind of noob.
So .. I got my HTC Desire (GSM) with Leedroid ROM atm. I want to change to Cyangenmod, but I'm a little confused now.
I have tried to get help at the wiki, but I'm not completely sure what to do.
I've followed step 1's advice "Before you do anything - make a backup", of course, and this should be fine.
However, I am not sure about step 2: "Gaining S-OFF & Installing a Custom Recovery Image". My phone is rooted with unrevoked, like half a year ago. I don't know anything about S-OFF and custom recovery image. I've tried to search Google, but it didn't really help.
I dunno if I have to just follow step 2 anyways, even though my phone is rooted, or I just have to proceed to step 3?
I actually tried to follow step 3 "Method via ROM Manager", but it didn't help at all. ROM Manager downloaded Cyangenmod 7.1 and installed it (well, it looked that way), but then I ended up at a black screen with green letters. I just pressed "press to reboot" since I thought the Cyangenmod was installed on my phone, but nothing have happened. Same Leedroid ROM when the phone rebooted.
I hope you're able to help me. Please tell me if you need more info from somewhere!
Some info from recovery mode:
Bravo PVT3 ship s-on
HBOOT-0.93.0001
Microp-051d
Touch panel-synt0101
Radio-5.09.05.30_2
Best regards
/Hamduden
AND btw, I'm sorry if I could have figured out by searching the forum, but I think it's a bit confusing with all the links, threads, abbreviations etc.
You're already rooted, so no need to re-root.
Download this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957344
And then read post four of this thread...

Hope it helps.
ps: Cyanogenmod wiki makes life hard. Don't bother with it. There's good guides here in the dev section you should read.
Searching for info with Google when you have it literally under yor nose... That's new.

Thank you zedmarcus!
So I'll just have to:
1: flash the CM7 ROM you linked to, from recovery mode (Volume down + power off/on button)
2: download and flash the new Radio afterwards
Right?
@Terepin:
Your "Thanks Meter" is not going to rise from that useless comment!
Full wipe before the flash.
Don't worry too much about the radio. If the phone works well after CM7 is installed, then just leave as it is.

I followed the guide, and the phone seems to work perfectly! Thank you so much.
However, I can't seem to get my 3G to work. Do you know anything about this?
And concerning the radio. When would I want to flash the new radio? When the ROM someday starts to get laggy/anoying/something?

You don't have a recovery. Are you s-off? Check the guide in post#7 in my signature.

What have you done so far? AAHK or HTCDEV? EDIT: what does it say when you reboot while holding power and volume-down?

What have you done so far? Your bootloader shouldn't be messed if you haven't done anything. Have you run AAHK or HTCDEV? If so, have you gotten any output? Can you still boot into the phone? Check whether you are S-OFF by rebooting while holding power and volume-down.
I'll start from the top.
Do you have a desire hd or an Inspire?
I'm assuming you are not rooted. To find out if you are rooted, make sure "fast boot" is switched of somewhere in settings when you are in the rom. It would either be under "battery" or "developer options" or one of those.
Switch the phone off. Hold the down volume button, and while holding it down then press the power button - wait, it should then boot into hboot.
In hboot it will tell you if you are s-off or s-on.
If you are s-on, you will need to root your device. If it is the desire hd, it's easier than the inspire (if you have the lattest software update on the inspire). You would go to aahk (ace advance hack kit) website which you can find in the thread I gave you. Take your time to read everything before you even download the hack kit. With the desire hd, it's pretty much a couple of clicks and you are done. With the inspire there are a few more steps - you'll be able to find all the instructions in that website. Make sure you read everything, including the effen manual. Read for comprehension. Don't skim it.
Now, if you are s-off, then all you will need to do is flash a recovery. You can find the instructions for that in the guide in post#7 as suggested previously [As well, the guide will give you a good idea on the terminology, steps, troubleshooters, etc., so that you can comunicate what is going on with your device in case you run into any problems and need help]. You can either use the method in the guide to flash a recovery or look through the second post which has a different method to flashing a recovery. Use whichever you are more comfortable with. However, if you are s-on, you should use the hack kit which will do everything for you except flash a different rom.
The other method is using htcdev to unlock your bootloader which will let you flash the rom.img. In the second post of the same thread, you can find a link on how to get this done. I won't go into how to flash a rom with this method, but the info is in that post.
If you use the hack kit, go on over to the developer section and search for what rom you would like to flash. As a rule, read the first page and the last five to have a good idea. In the past I used to suggest read the first five pages and the last ten, but as of late the dev section has gotten so overcrowded with junk, the same rule doesn't apply anymore.
Once you have read the OP (original post/first page), see what you would need to flash to get a working rom. Depending on which recovery you are using, CWM which comes standard when you use the hack kit (the wipe procedure is in the guide), or you can use a different recovery as 4ext (wipe procedure is also in the guide / and they are usually in the OP of each thread in the dev section). As a suggestion, try to get a touch recovery if you are going to be changing roms frequently. It will help spare the use of the hardware buttons to get things done.
Now, once you have flashed (installed) a new rom onto your phone, keep in mind that almost any question you can think of has already been asked countless of times. There is a search function which can be used to find whatever issue you are having. I can't recall if "how to use the search function" is linked in the thread or not. But how to report a bug is.
Hope this helps to get you started. Good luck.
I want to root my DHD. I had downloaded AAHK (zip file) few days back when the link was working and AAHK was not retired. Would I not be able to root and S-OFF my phone using AAHK now?

You can still S-OFF your phone.
After a while, the script might (if needed) try to download a PD98IMG file. When it gives an error simply google for the filename (might be PD98IMG-GB2 for example) and place it in the PD98IMG directory AAHK created. Everything should go well. I S-OFF'd my Desire yesterday.

Sorry KirovAir, but if the people you are advising to use the Hack Kit get stuck due to not following instructions or some other issue, will you support that? Because let me remember you that the Hack Kit is no longer supported nor here or in the IRC channel. Don't you think that what you are advising is dangerous and might leave quite a few fellas with their phones in a blank screen?

Thanks for the information!
I had also read about 'Easy Ace Root Tool' in dev forum. But I have a question regarding that.
- It says that only Custom ROMs can be installed, not Ported ROMs. What is meant by 'ported ROMs'? Will I not be able to install, say Sabsa prime or Venom's ROM(which are ported from One S and Desire X), if I unlock bootloader using Easy Ace root tool?
Also, does it support flashing 4ext recovery?
could you please tell me at least which version of aahk you used? already found in the web PD98IMG-GB2 and i am willing to do the proccess... already red many forums about rooting my desire hd. but since you did that proccess already i think you can give some reliable tips even if this topic is unsupported here. i know that discussing about aahk is unwelcome in the xda forum and i am sorry for this but i think you would agree that its the way with the most chances of success. or anyway could you suggest me any another way to follow?
thank you for yoour time

Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash any recovery that is for the device (DHD / Inspire 4G), Custom roms built from source (CM) and modified sense roms work great. Ported roms I am not sure, but you can try it out. In the worst case scenario, you might get stuck in the splash screen and you will have to flash a different one.

No, Hack Kit is no longer supported anywhere. If you are willing to do it, you are on your own and will have to find information about it somehwere else. There are other ways to root or S-OFF the device that are supported here. So, please let the Hack Kit rest in peace.

You don't need S-OFF to root. You can just run this and you will be just fine. You don't have to be a programmer to root your phone, just do a little reading and searching will suffice.

Hi
I had a p350 for ages, finally got a Vision, and now I'm stumped as to how to push a new kernel/baseband/rom to it.
Searching the forum gave me nothing of value, can anybody possibly link me a tutorial?
Think of baseband as radio, just so you don't go looking for it
The best way to root your phone to do all these things is to exploit with gfree, which will probably require a downgrade first.
Just do an xda or Google search for one of three guides, or all three, the more reading you do the better
Xda wiki vision
Cyanogenmod wiki root HTC desire z
Strawmetal PDF guide root HTC g2 dz
Don't use any other guide but the ones mentioned and you'll be fine, if your confused on what to do after root search the general section of this thread and find a tutorial made by rizzoizzo to flash your first ROM and more

Cheers, it was just the first few things that had me stumped.
I realize that this is still not quite the right forum, but I am new to the vision much like the title of the thread would suggest :|
Alright, I got SlimRom 4.2.2 to boot I just have to go and change to DPI to something acceptable for my sister's standards xD what in the world is 4ext recovery? I know 4ext is a file system format or something of the sort, but I have never heard of it as a recovery...
Please point me in the direction of you "Stupid Questions" thread, or what you have as an equivalent. Most device forums has it sticked xD
First thing you need to know is how to root properly, there are a few ways to gain root but the o lay good way for this phone is with the gfree method, if you did any other way fix it now before you end up with headaches. A post above explains where to go
Next being your new to HTC, I highly suggest learning fast boot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27796375
I also have a more comprehensive yet unfinished guide at xda-u, but this will due and will also get you 4ext recovery (ext 4 is a partition type, 4ext is the best recovery made for android)

Knowing what's here ahead of time before you run into a problem can help
First time flashers on the vision may be helped here

I'd link you more guides but its a pain on a tablet, just let me know if you need a hand. And yes there should be a new q&a thread made up for this forum with all the proper links... If anyone want to help out this community a massive set of updated links to the right stuff would be great and certainly warrant a sticky
