Bootloader is a program that loads files required during booting.Rooting is a process which gives you access to the root of the system.Bootloader is a program while rooting is a process.
As far as backing up before rooting is concerned, there is a guide here about backing up before rooting.

Thanks. So back to my original question, how do I backup before unlocking bootloader and rooting? I don't want to lose the data on some of the apps I have.

I think it is my rom... my game progress, my notes, etc. I already synced my contacts with Google.

Rooting procedure does not needs backup .. it will not delete your data though ...
OK,here is the guide for a full adb backup before rooting-

Thanks. Will I be able to restore my data after I root the phone? Or will it restore the stock android that I had on there?
If you restore the adb backup,you will get to the same state(an identical image) as you were before,with all the data and game progress.

You will not be able to import any game progress from the unlocked/unrooted phone to the newly rooted phone.
But after rooting,play again and save the game progress using Ti Backup; you can use Titanium Backup to restore app+data in any Rom after that(though,it is not recommended).

Wow. There goes my minecraft world, my 3 star angry birds levels, my unlocked "swag" in fruit ninja, and a whole bunch of other random games that had some nice saved progress.
This is worth it though because Titanium Backup is able to backup apps!
Rooting also gives better control of my phone and I can remove all those annoying network apps that I can't uninstall now.

But,don't worry,after rooting you can easily hack games using gamecih or game saves are easily available online.just google 'angry birds game save' or for any other game you want
Edit: Root isnt required for backing up apps.you can backup using any file manager like file expert.but,to backup data,root is required.

One last question, will I need to back up my SD card too? I installed apps on there. Will the ADB backup back those stuff up too?
No need.
The adb will create an identical image of your rom like CWM or TWRP would.
when you restore the backup,just put the sd with the games in the phone or it will say app not installed.
Or,to avoid unnecessary confusion,move the games to the phone and then do the backup.

Is your bootloader already unlocked? If yes, flash a custom recovery, root your phone and use an app like titanium backup to backup apps + appdata.
If no, unlocking it will wipe your device. You can use adb backup in that case though, use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351

And OP, your purchases are all tied to your Google Account. Signing back into the new ROM means you get access to all of your apps for download again if you want.

If your looking to back up your apps and not any system data along with the app data, the best app for that is titanium backup. But it requires you have root. Just a matter of backing them up and then restoring them using the tool. It keeps a backup on your phone. Or if you have the pro version you can store the backups online at your storage place of choice.

No. stop suggesting people to use a toolkit, since its pretty obvious that the op doesnt know what he's doing! if something goes wrong, will you be the one to get his device out of trouble?
and besides, the link you posted goes to a baseband thread. ????
a simple solution was given, use play store builtin restore feature, unless op chooses to roll bare aosp, but even then, op wouldnt need a toolkit (he would know how to build from src) to restore apps.

If rooted then titanium backup pro best app available for tasks like this. Has a batch feature to backup what you need and restore again also you can save your backup to dropbox.

It is somehow helpfull, but still:
It works for all user installed apps flawless.
BUT i cannot complete it for system apps! For none of them! It doesnt give me an error or so, it (the progress bar) just freezes when trying to backup sys apps....
My phone is of course rooted...

Titanium backup works fine with user or system app, you can uninstall titanium backup and delete the folder on sd card and redownload the app

I recently rooted my One V, but I did an adb backup with all the flags. Including backing up shared files.
After root, I am unable to restore my .ab backup as it stalls at com.android.sharedstorage or something like that. The backup won't move at all, and I have important messages and contacts that are backed up in the file.
Please help me with this. Thanks...

Okay, so I shall explain again.
Before unlocking & rooting my One V, I made an .ab backup using adb (command line = adb backup -noshared etc etc). Backed up my contacts and stuff.
After unlocking and rooting, I installed CM10 on my One V.
Then after that, I used adb again to push the backup to the phone. The phone accepts it and all, but then it stalls at restoring com.android.sharedstoragebackup for ages and won't move.
I have no SD card in the phone before or after the backup/unlock/root/restore.
I will try the RUU and see how things work. In the meantime, if there are any alternatives, in case the RUU method doesn't, please advice.

I'm thinking about rooting my phone (HTC One X 4.1.1, CID_102) and I want to make sure a few things:

2. When a new update is released, how can I update my device with the root? I will keep using the stock rom, only with ROOT.
3. How can I backup all of my data? Including pics, SMS, whatsapp, app settings and information and etc.
4. Is there an option that when I start my device again after it was formated, it will download all of the previous apps? if not, then I need to make a list of all of my apps.. about 35 but still.

Then update normally and you won't lose root.
3. Do a backup in ClockWorkMod recovery or whatever recovery you use. Transfer it to your PC afterwards for safe storage.
4. Download titanium backup and back up all your apps. Then transfer the backup to PC.

2. You will loose root by updating, but you can easily re-root. There is an app called rootkeeper but i have no experience with that

How can I re-root? the bootloader stays open so all I have to do is just run the ZIP throgh the recovery again and that's it?

Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
In that custom recovery is an option backup and restore, when you press backup it runs a complete nand backup of everything on the phone except the sdcard.
If you want to just backup parts like sms,whatsapp etc etc....then you can use titanium backup like TT said or another program called carbon. These apps allows you to backup just parts that you wantnto backup and restore after an update.
I always start with a clean install of all apps and stuff, it "feels" better to me. But that is a personal opinion

Yes thats correct, maybe carbon comes in handy there because it does not require any root acces. Its free in the playstore

1. Freedom is an application that lets you (with root) to get stuff from applications that costs money (in-app purchase).
2. No, the CM10 has the latinme (if I'm ont mistaken) keyboard, that Android 4.2 has as stock, and it has swipe feature. In CM10 they put swipe in more langauges so I want to use it.
I think that if I'll install the GAPPS from CM10 then it will install this keyboard also. In order to do that, I just need to put the .ZIP file in my phone, and from the recovery install it like I installed SU?
Can I delete it later? and the gapps will update also from market (and not blocked like a pirated application)

This is just a warning.
Any app that allows you to download a paid app for free is classed as warez on XDA and is not allowed. You can not upload any app on XDA that is a paid app. The warez policy also includes trying to get around in-app purchases.

Hi guys,
My device lags too much these days, especially after latest 4.3 OTA update. Soon I will perform a factory reset and don't want to lose my game saves and most of other app configurations. Last time I checked, it was possible to backup such files only for rooted phones via Titanium Backup. But my device is not rooted and I'm not planning to root it in the near future.
These are some of the games I want to backup: Subway Surfers, Hill Climb Racing, CSR Racing, Fruit Ninja, NFS Most Wanted etc...
And these are the apps: WhatsApp, AndFTP, Cool Reader etc...
So, what do you experts suggest me to backup my datas?
Is "Helium" good and trustable enough OR is there any better app for non-rooted devices?
Is "Move to SD card" feature (came with Android 4.3) trustable?

i dont use helium or do i trust it
2nd move-to sd card works, 90% it will save your game data and everything and you're safe no worries
OR back up on your pc, there are programs you can use or pull game data to pc
dropbox/Google drive can be usefull for backups

yu dont need root, root is optional or just for TITANIUM backup

there are programs/software that can backup full game data i just need to google it .......

Thank you, I will wait for it. I googled but all I found is Kies, which is really useless.
Dude just root your phone. You'll save yourself a lot of time and headaches. There are some methods to backup without root but in all honesty, it'll much easier (and maybe safer) to just root your phone and use titanium backup.

cf-auto root make it easier to root the S3 or manual with CWM
Its a pretty simple affair to backup data from self installed apps, anything that is not stored on the internal or external SD is all stored in the /data folder of your device. Any non root backup app has access to this folder, or any file explorer for that matter. You can save a few steps of downloading, installing, and executing an app and just copy/paste the /data folder to one of the sd's (this is basically all a backup app is going to do, with the added possibility of compression and md5 checksums), jack in to a pc, copy/paste to desired location.
