HDMI not working anymore - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

My phone is rooted & I am on the original firmware that came with the phone.
I originally was using a cheap mhl/hdmi cable that I got off ebay. It worked great until the other day. I assumed that it was just a cheap/broken cable so I picked up the Samsung Smart Dock. Unfortunately, that doesn't work either so I'm assuming something is wrong with my phone.
I took the battery out & did a restore/reset to factory conditions. Still no luck.
Any ideas on how to get this working or do you think the problem is the phone's hardware?
Thanks!

Is the USB port working at all on your phone? It's possible some of your pins went bad in the port.
In my experience, sometimes the port can be nick picky about with the MHL. But I was using a generic HML adapter and a 5-11pin usb adapter. If you know someone else with a GN2, you may want to check your stuff with their phone just to make sure it's the cable or dock and not the phone. You can also use a GS3 too.

Not familiar with the Smart Dock. Is it 11 pin and not the older version 5 pin, I would think to confirm this?
I purchased the Samsung Dongle for hdmi and it worked great, just remember to also plug in power as well.

Thanks for the responses, but still no luck!
@lovekeiiy - Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a Note 2 or S3, but since two cables don't work (including one that used to work), like you, I'm guessing that it is the port. I guess that I'll have to take it back to Sprint.
@q711179 - Yeah, the Smart Dock is made specifically for the Note 2. The phone charges and connects to the computer perfectly so something having to do with the MHL connect is probably on the fritz. And, yes, it was plugged in.
Anyone have any other ideas before I head to Sprint?
Thanks again!

maybe one of the Sprint employees will have a GN2 or GS3 you can test your cables or dock with.
I'm not saying it's not the port. I would just hate to go through the hassle of exchanging the phone and it's still happens to be the cables or dock. It's possible you could have gotten a bad second cable and dock; that's some bad luck if true.
Thus, that why I ask if you're able to connect the phone to a PC or charger. I assume an HML cable connected to either should trigger the USB memory storage and charging on the PC and charging with the wallwort or car cigarette usb adapter.
In my experience, I find with pin adapter and HML converter box, it tends to be nick picky at times.
On a side note, I don't like how using these adapters don't really charger the phone. It's just a slower drain. I would rather have to use regular AC adapter. I guess once could try to use a more power USB wallwort with HML adapter. But I digress.....

@lovekeiiy - Great idea to have someone at the Sprint store check out the cable. I really hope that it is the cable and not the phone. Thanks for your trying to troubleshoot this with me. And, yes, I really wish that MHL cable didn't drain the phone!

I had a lot of glitchy issues when using standard a/c charging units the one that output .5 or .7 amps even the 1 amps with the mhl adapter. I use my Nexus 7 charger which puts out 2 amps and all the glitchy issues i had went away now the output to the tv is solid.

Thanks for the idea. I tried a bunch of chargers, ranging from .8 amps to 2 amps, and no luck. The frustrating thing is that the Note 2, says that the HDMI cable is connected, but there is no output. I've tried several different monitors to.
Since the Sprint Store is a small hike for me to get to, I won't be going until this weekend so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

the phone says it's connected? It's possible there's a HDCP issue. Have you tried a different TV? Don't test with Hulu or Sprint TV, they both disable HMDI out. You should be able to see something if on your homescreens.
Unfortunately, there are only so many TVs that have HML, mainly Samsung. Other TVs, you need that HML adapter. You may want to try the phone at a friend's TV or local electronics store. You may need to bring a external USB battery to power the HML adapter if you have an HML adapter or your phone's charger.

I've tried it on a computer monitor (where it worked previously w/ my Note 2 and it just stopped working for some reason when I was using a cheap MHL/HDMI connector that I got off amazon). I also tried it on another computer monitor and on a Motorola Lapdock. On all monitors, the phone shows that the HDMI cable is connected when using either the Smart Dock or the cheap connector, but there is no picture when I am on the homescreen (or when on any other screen).
I know that my HDMI cable that I connect to the Smart Dock works since I tested it w/ all of the above monitors with a Raspberry Pi.
I can power the phone & connector with the Lapdock so I'll give that a shot at an electronics store.
Do you think that it could be a software issue? Should I try a new ROM that supports the MHL/HDMI out?
Thanks again for all of your help. I really appreciate it

I would try a different rom if you can. I thought you were running a stock rom. I've been using stock the whole time. I'm rooted. I'm currently running a stock deoxedized. I haven't used the HML in a while, but I will try it later to make sure it's working.
If you're able to charge the phone while using a HML cord or adapter, then it's either the firmware or the USB port is borked, but not completely.
Going to electronics store was suggested because those TV should all have the HDCP that the phone could be looking for. I don't know how your old TV or monitors are, so it's possible they may lack it. Sometimes, it's just the handshake, and just turning off the phone (just hit the power botton on the phone, don't actually shut it off) or TV, and then turn them back on can resolve the resolve the handshake. I've heard of this for home theater PCs or other devices in that area.

I'm on the stock rom, but was wondering if switching it might help if it is a software issue, but since I already did a factory reset, I sort of doubt it.
I'll try the electronics store next week. I have to work this weekend, and I don't go near an electronic store during my commute. I really hope it works.
Thanks again for all your suggestions. I really appreciate it. I'll report back next week.

I hooked up my GN2 to the HDTV, and was working fine.
Not the best video, but you can see phone with the 5 to 11 pin adapter, generic monoprice HML adapter. The comparison thing about it, keeps me from getting propped with copyright infringements.
I had the same thought your factory reset. I also was thinking maybe you downloaded it to reflash it and maybe your download was corrupted. Obviously, I have no idea if you flashed a different rom after rooting. If you didn't, then flashing a different is not likely going to help. But at this point, I'm not sure what you have to lose; it should be noted, I don't know how many flashes you get before the Sprint or Samsung get pissy. You may want to run flash away if you have to replace your phone. I never used it myself.

Thanks so much for the video. I wish that my phone could do that. I just got back from BestBuy and tried the phone on a number of TVs using a 5 volt 2 amp power source, and no luck. So, I'm sure it is the phone.
I only rooted, and did not flash a new ROM so I'm going to use Triangle Away and bring it back to Sprint.
Thanks again for all your help!

My hmdi out is not working either it used to work and would play games off my phone on the big screen but now nothing, just the "HDMI cable connected" prompt on my phone. Tried rebooting, ,etc etc...
I am running custom rom/kernel so I fear that might have something to do with it...I will try triangle away before i try more drastic solutions I suppose...

You may want to try a stock rom and kernel. I don't suspect the kernel, but it's possible the ROM doesn't have all the drivers or something to have a working HDMI.
---------- Post added at 05:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:14 AM ----------
and Triagle Away isn't going the HDMI situation. It's a tool to reset the flash counter so one can avoid a warranty from being voided for flashing too many times.

I didn't think triangle away would help (and it didn't) but thought I'd give it a shot anyway...
I'm happy to say I got it working by disabling the exynos exploit patcher and rebooting...it's back to working perfectly now. I actually uninstalled that app bc my kernel includes its own exploit patch

You solved it! It was the exynos exploit patcher! I enabled it and didn't use HDMI for a few weeks so the thought never crossed my mind. I just disabled it and HDMI out is working again. Thank you!!!
What kernal & ROM are you using?

Yay! Lol glad I could help I was ripping my hair out trying to watch a movie last night.
Im using macks rom 4.0 with latest Perseus kernel 32.1 Andreilux mentions in the changelog for version 31 that it now includes samsungs official fix:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927852
"Removed my own security fixes and replaced them with the official Samsung one. I guess it can now be disclosed: exynos-mem was only one of multiple entry-points for the memory exploit. We discovered the s5p-smem exploit ourselves back in December but kept it quiet, I fixed that one back in version 29.2 without mentioning. Nobody was secure from a smart exploiter up until then, SuperCurios or Chainfire's software fixes are also just patching a single hole in what is a Swiss cheese. Kernels >v31 and beyond stock LLA are now the only truly protected ones"

Thanks for the response. I'll read up on the kernel & ROM and probably load those up tonight.

HDMI Adapter Problems/Flickering Output

Hi
I just recieved my Adapter but something seems to be faulty on this,
when I connect it with several HDMI cables the mirrored picture starts to jitter or the connection break for a few seconds.
The cables are not decoupled and not really expensive, I have no other HDMI device to test them but I dont think that they are buggy.
The TV connected to is a Philips PFL8404
Some suggestions what I'm doing wrong?
The GT is rooted and on stock ROM.
Greets Nighty
i have the same issue. i tried two different hdmi cables and two different hdtvs and the issue is still happening. at this point i think its a defective adapter. Im gonna exhange it.
I had a similar issue back when I had a Xoom (which I ended up returning cause of weight). I am debating over ordering the adapter for my Tab, and if they are doing this, too, then I'd be fairly dissapointing. I always figured maybe the Xoom had a loose connection or the cable sucked, but maybe it's something else?
Got my HDMI adapter for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday also. It flickers and looses connection so much it useless. I've tried several new HDMI cables, and 3 different TVs. All flicker and blink. I'm sure it's a bad adapter. Will be returned shortly.
i would like to see someone post positive things about the hdmi adapter, have been thinking about getting one, but so far all these posts make me believe that its now worth it?
thanks
recieved a second adapter and still the same, seems to be a problem with the GT itselve or with some drivers build in, may the root crashed something, will trx out.
just ttryed another 40 bucks cable and still the same, dont think thats a hardware fault by the adapter. The only thing I can test now is to unroot to stock. Will test later and update.
UPDATE: Unrooting doesnt work
it doesnt seem like the people with the verizon hdmi adapter are having this issue. I wonder if its made differently?
I just received my adapter from Verizon and I can confirm the same issues so its not related to where you buy it.
Anyone notice what the status of their battery life is when using the adapter? Mine glitched the first time I tested it out and I had just taken the Tab off the charger. I kept getting a notification to unplug the Tab because it had reached 100% charge, which I haven't seen before. When I tried it later in the day it wasn't fully charged and it seemed fine. I haven't had a chance to try it longer than 10 minutes yet so not sure if its battery charging related. I know it doesn't work without a power supply so maybe once the Tabs at 100% it rejects power and cuts the HDMI off. Just a thought, I may be wrong.
I just tried it with 30% battery life and still having the same issue. does anyone have one that works?
Yeah I tried watching a movie on mine last night with about 70% battery and it switched from TV to Tab then back to TV about every 5 minutes.
I don't have an HDMI out cable, but I was wondering if you guys were plugging the charger into the HDMI, or if you were using it without it. I'm curious because I saw a review about it stating they needed the Charger to be plugged into the HDMI to get it to work.

yhea thats right you have to plug the wall charger in otherwhise it wont display anything at all, our problem is the faulty result whats on the screen
Wow. I was just about to order the HDMI adapter from Sammy (I stubbornly kept waiting for BestBuy or Verizon to get one in stock). But seeing all these problems, I wonder if they're having quality or other issues, and hence why it's not hitting shelves yet.
Does anyone have a feel for whether all seem to be defective, or if these posts are more representative of the adapters that are defective? (guessing from those saying they've tried more than one, that there seems to be a general problem with the adapters).
Okay I have a 10.1 galaxy tab wifi and a home made dock from a 7 inch tab and 10 inch tab dock. Using the oem power adapter that came with my tab. With my hdmi dock I watched a movie on amazon instant via the browser And I rented a movie from google. Both movies played perfectly through my 50 inch plasma tv via the hdmi dock.. I can tell you that movies would not play from google untell touchwiz update. but after the update I have had no problems whatsoever playing any content via hdmi. Also I don't know if it makes any difference but I have never rooted my tab. Good luck guys I don't know what's going on I hope you figure it out.
Hey mopar. Is your tv a 1080p? Both my hdtvs are 1080i so im wondering if thats causing the issue. I think i read somewhere that this tab outputs in 1080p. I dont think its the video player because it cuts in and out without running any programs. Its like every 30 seconds the tv screen will cut out go black and then come back on. its basically useless.
I believe my tv is the lower of the 2 not sure though.... it's definitely not a high end tv but it is new..w
my tv is a 1080p
I just got the adapter today and haven't had any problems with it so far
I just got the 7 " docking with HDMI out and it works like a charm, so it seems to be a production problem with the adapters. Brought me the 10.1 dock to put the piece on the 7 " base.

MHL to HDMI problem resolved

Since I couldn't find any solution to my problem anywhere, I thought I'd post my solution here in case someone encounters the same or similar problems.
First, the problem: When my Galaxy Nexus is connected to my TV, using the samsung mhl-to-hdmi adapter, it loses connection at times. These problems get worse when the battery is low. It seems like the charger cannot support both the HDMI and the phone at the same time.
Resolution: My TV happens to be located in an area of my appartment with particularly bad reception. It appeared to me as if the disconnects happened whenever the phone was searching for a network. When the phone is in airplane mode the disconnects no longer occur, even if wifi is active. I haven't yet checked if it is enough to just switch off 3G, but it works and I'm very happy with it.
Activate airplane mode in Settings > Wireless & Networks
If you wan't to have wifi, just turn it back on.
I will have to test this theory
I have read that with the MHL adapter it works much much better to have your phone charging at the same time.

A Million thanks to you dude. You made my day. I would have definitely given you one strong hug if you were anywhere near me.
I bought a brand new Samsung MHL and a High Speed HDMI two days back, only to find frequent disconnection and white noise. Happened every few minutes. Tried everything and was so freakin sad that I can't tell. Searched thoughout to find a solution. No go. Neither XDA nor google had the answer.
And then finally stumbled upon this thread.
And its exactly what was happening to my galaxy SII. I was in a place of low reception where 3G strength was bad. Never thought of this to be a problem.
But finally I read, I followed, I implemented and there I am.
Extremely satisfied with my purchase and my SII. It was back up and roaring on the big screen clutter-less now.
Thanks again dude!!!
Just one thing. What do you think is the relation between the HDMI output and network strength?? Is it supposed to happen or is it a fault(H/W or S/W) ?

MHL adapters include a side port for charging your phone. When your phone is displaying itself through HDMI it drains battery faster than this 'HDMI charging'. If your MHL adapter doesn't include this, I suggest buying a new one. $7 on eBay.

I believe that for most (all?) MHL->HDMI adapters, you HAVE to plug it in.
In MHL mode, the phone is set up so that it is able to receive power (charge). The MHL->HDMI adapter needs power to run. Since it can't get power from the nexus (because the nexus is set up to receive power, not provide it), it needs to be plugged in via the side micro-usb port. So far, all the adapters I've seen/heard of are this way.
Hypothetically, I suppose that the MHL->HDMI adapter could be battery-powered or have a different plug to provide power - or it might only power itself and not the phone. I've never seen one like that, though.

I believe you are mistaken. First off, the maximum power capable of being supplied over HDMI is 50mA - well below the charging requirements for the Nexus. Secondly, the device you're connecting the Nexus to (TV/Monitor) is a sink device which does NOT provide power (unless MHL compliant?) to the source (Nexus). Thus, most (all?) MHL adapters provide the option of connecting an external power supply to charge the device.
To the OP, thanks for this info! My friend had issues with his and this could very much be the issue, the low signal is causing too much power draw for him.
Since I live in an area with very strong signal, that would explain why I never saw it.

Does your TV support 1280x720 over HDMI?
Awesome! I've tested this last night and didn't get any flickering of image when using my MHL to HDMI. The flickering would happen every 30 min or so sporatically...
FYI- your phone does not get charged through HDMI cable. You need to plug in power to the MHL connector to even use it which charges it but having the screen on at all times causes the battery to slowly drain. I usually just dim my screen down as much as possible to savage what I can. The drain is very minimal ~ 2% per hour with the type of MHL cable I purchased. (Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter IMPROVED WITH RCP- purchased on Amazon)
I know it's an old thread, but has anyone else tried bumping the CPU minimum up to 700mhz? I am going to do this tonight, airplane mode did work for me but I am currently looking for away to get HULU and Netflix working and I need the data connection.
Thank you so much, it works. Anyway, is there a way to have data connection and mhl at the same time?
I'm having problems connecting mouse through usb on the go.. when I try to connect my phone turns off and then it takes so much time to start?? any suggestions?

Try it for your self, but if you are using any of the newer ROMs with the new DDK1.9, it doesn't support MHL.

[Q] USB Wall-Socket from ThinkGeek. Will it work with my GNex?

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I'm not exactly an electrical engineer. I was looking at buying one of these for my room: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/e81a/ and it says it outputs at 2 amps. i notice the stock Samsung charger is 1 amp. Will I be doing any harm to my phone by using the wall outlet vs. my stock charger? Or will it detect it as a USB charger, charging it at a slower rate?
Ya it'll be fine, it says UP TO 2.1amps.
Also it says it charges all mobile phones that accept USB power.
yes it will work. I have a few of these installed in my house. Your device will only pull the amount of amps that it needs. The voltage is what you have to look out for...
it will work, but it is not up to the 2011 nec code as it doesn't have tamper resistant shutters, I would recommend this instead.
http://www.amazon.com/Cooper-Wiring-Devices-TR7740W-K-Combination/dp/B007NC5GI4
It works the same, is up to the latest electrical code, is cheaper and will work with a standard wallplate.
Thanks for the input everyone, I think i'm gonna spring for one (may not be the Thinkgeek one though, as the one cade80 posted and a few other's I've found are cheaper) at some point, just to cut some clutter from my bedroom a bit.

Although you lose 1 standard plug, the big plus is being able to use normal faceplates with it.

Good eye on that, depending on your needs this may outweigh the being up to current electrical codes.
most third party charger will not charge you samsung smartphone at full power.
to charge at full power you must shortcut middle pins.
"will not charge" - not correct, your phone reduce it
So I went ahead and decided to not spring for the ThinkGeek Charger, and instead bought one of these: http://www.lowes.com/pd_369050-6337...&pl=1&currentURL=/pl__0__s?Ntt=usb&facetInfo= and just put it in a standard plug to test it to make sure it worked. Well I plugged it in and the first thing I noticed was the GNex was taking a while to recognize the plug. Finally it started Charging (USB Though) which was OK with me. Well last night I plugged it in via my Samsung Charger to a standard power strip because I hadn't gotten around to installing the RCA plate yet. Well I woke up this morning and it was on like 50% power and wasn't charging. So I was like WTF. So I brought it into work with me this morning, and now when I plug the stock Samsung charger with the stock samsung cable into the wall, no charge. I tried plugging it in to my computer, and it eventually makes connection with the computer (it's not instant like It used to be) and Android File Transfer starts, but says it can't connect to the phone. Then it charges for a few minutes, up about 1%, then stops charging. So my question is, when I plugged in my phone to the RCA charger last night, did it fry my phone? Or is my charge cable maybe bad now? I haven't tried another cable yet (everyone at work is an iPhone user and doesn't have a Micro-USB cable lying around) but I'm going to try that and hope it works. If it's not the cable, is it possible that the phone itself got damaged? If so, how could I go about removing root and wiping it to take it into the VZW store for replacement without USB to the computer?
Another new development. I plugged it into a Windows Box (I was using a Mac) and when I plug it in, it says "This Device can perform faster" and talks about plugging it into a USB 2.0 port. I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro, it has USB 2.0. It won't mount the disk either. So i'm really beginning to wonder if the USB cable is fried.
Turns out it was a bad USB cable. Went to Best Buy and bought a generic cable and it now charges and hooks up to the computer just fine. My ADB doesn't seem to be working though for some reason, on Mac or PC...
Ok, everything is working now. ADB wasn't working because of a conflict with EasyTether on my Mac. Thanks everyone for the suggestions but I've decided to just stick with what I have now (power strip) and not deal with it.

Good eye on that, depending on your needs this may outweigh the being up to current electrical codes.

some electrical codes are good some are only updated so a manufacturer can score some more money from sales
Like when the addition of ark fault breakers

May I recommend you return the Best Buy cable and go to monoprice.com?
I bought five cables from them that are 6 foot long. They work terrific and are higher quality looking than what you get from Best Buy.

Wireless charging while OTG mounting

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to use wireless charge while OTG mounting external storage?
Need something like this to replace my current car dashboard tablet.

No, it is not possible at least in its stock configuration with stock rom. I tested this last night with my Xbox360 controller and my koolpad qi charger. As soon as the OTG cable is inserted, wireless charging ceases.
I'm assuming there's a good reason why it functions like this.

Ah ok, thanks for the answer even though it wasn't what i hoped for
I guess it needs a kernel hack to so for, and it disable charging for security reasons since OTG host is also power supply.
Guess Nexus might not be what i'm looking for unless i use some wireless storage solution.
On my nexus 4 when I connect it to my TV using a slimport cable to HDMI, I can still place it on my wireless charging orb and it chargers wirelessly.. Weird that the n7 doesn't follow the same behavior... I am going to test it to make sure...

I'm not sure how the SlimPort/HDMI works, but i think the difference is that the phone act as power supply when you use OTG. I looked at the kernel for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Nexus 7 a long time ago, and could see the source switched the power from "pull" to "push" when OTG was connected, and could be possible to hack the kernel, but i never dared to try because of the risk there might be doing so. I'm far from an expert when it comes to stuff like that, so better not to mess around too much
Anyway, i hoped there might have been a chance with wireless charge, since it's different "connector", so maybe the kernel wouldn't turn off charge when OTG connected, but seems like it does.

That would be my guess too, whenever the USB port gives or receives power (or thinks it's doing either), wireless charging is turned off, probably to prevent overvoltage or short circuiting the battery.
Qi charger most likey can't give enough current to the device while it has a USB otg attached.
any update on this question? same behavior for me with @bruce2728 rom and with Glitch kernel. can't seem to find a way to use USB otg + charging....

[Q] car charging for sm-t210

hi, does anyone have a solution. when i plug my note 3 7" in it doesn't even register as being plugged in. do other roms correct this problem? or is there another solution. I've tried different plugs with outputs that say they are the same as the wall outlets (which charges fine)
This is a major problem as i only got this tablet to replace my car stereo. I have everything done and wired up, but now I have a tablet that can't charge while in the car.
Any solution and I would be very grateful. thanks.

Sa, me issue. Nobody else care to use this as a GPS and not kill the battery?

Chances are your adapter isn't putting out enough amperage.
What is it rated for? The tablet really wants 2A, though it seems to work ok with 1A. That said, it also seems to be a bit funny about cables.
I only just got mine yesterday, so early days, but have noticed some charging weirdness.
My charger says 2.1A and is capable of charging an iPad. I tried 2 different cables, both data cables but they both work in a wall charger.
I was hoping someone would tell me to update to CM and all would work fine because there are some odd UI glitches in the touchwiz, especially bluetooth disconnecting.
I dont want to root and ROM unless I know these problems will go away. I will return this thing if the problem is unsolvable. I have about a week left.
