Hey guys, So I purchased a used Nexus from a guy locally. I showed up and he had a box with charger, headphones, case, and screen protector. The phone looked perfect and he put his sim in and activated the phone along with showing me data worked along with calls. I bought the phone and took the phone to Verizon and had it activated. It activated fine, so I thought I made out good at this point. However, after looking at the phone further, it appears to have the 1850 Mah battery and the identification sticker under the battery does not have the Samsung logo. It just lists Model SCH-1515 V and shows the serial number and imei number along with STA 02/20/2012 Made in Korea.
I put in a code i found online to check and see if its refurbished and it shows NO for reconditioned. Here is the confusing part, the phone was first activated on 2/28/12 according to the software and has a lifetime call log of 82 calls at around 63 hours. The guy stated he owned the phone since December 17th and he wont return my calls. Do any of you guys know any additional information about this phone that can help me indentify what it is? Also, the phone seems to drop 4G coverage alot and when it first boots and shows the Google logo with a lock logo that appears below it. Does this mean anything? It also has the Superuser icon in my apps list so it appears to be rooted. The software version is 4.0.2 ICS. I feel like an idiot for buying this thing. Maybe I can flash it and fix the radios witha custom rom.
Why exactly are you feeling like an idiot? I still can't understand.
You have purchased the 4G Model of the Gnex, which is called I515:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_nexus_i515-4301.php
This version also includes the 1850mAh battery.
If it's rooted, you can easily unroot and lock your bootloader (the little lock thing will disappear then). Concerning the radio signal, you'll find most 4G users are struggling with the Network reception.
So all in all, unless there's something i missed/did not understand, you bought yourself a normal 4G Galaxy Nexus.
Yeah sounds like you got a unlocked and rooted phone. If you choose to download any roms make sure you download the ones for the Toro, Maguro is the GSM variant. If your reception is bad you could flash the leaked 4.0.4 radios. Check the CDMA development thread for radios, roms, etc. There are some great roms on here and rootzwiki.

I think I was more concerned about the dishonesty and the date the phone was activated. It just made me doubt my purchase. I mean, shouldn't the phone have a samsung logo behind the battery? I also found an ad where he posted the same phone for sale on 2/28 which is the day the phone was first activated. Thanks for your input!
Dude, it's USED from some random guy ONLINE... expect dishonesty!

it should have a samsung logo under the batter that has the IMEI number on it.
i bet you got a stolen phone, but if VZW activated it, call it a good day and forget about it all. if you want a stock phone, go to the dev forums and read how to flash back to stock with the CDMA version.

How about you post some pictures here so we can tell you? Make sure to hide the IMEI and Serial Number before posting those pics.
Lifetime call log info and activation resets everytime you hard reset or flash a rom
Kind of a weird post. You got GN that you hooked up to Verizon without a problem and it came with a stock battery. What exactly is the issue here?
Anyway, for future if you ever want to buy a used phone locally always make the seller meet you at a Verizon store or whoever you are trying to hook the phone up with so they can check the phone for you in person.

That is not true. *#*#RTN#*#* will hold you info even through factory resets and flashes. It's not entirely bug-free though, as I've got a screen shot from January showing that I had an incoming call time of 320 hours after only owning the phone for a month, which of course works out to 10 hours of calling a day. In the 7 weeks since it's crawled up to just over 500 hours.
My guess is that it has something to do with Google Voice.
Don't worry about it. Flash 4.0.4 and be done with it! More than likely you will get better reception with the new radios.

The "lock icon" on boot means that the phone is already Unlocked, so you dont need to do anything you are ready to flash CWM (if it isnt on there already)... if you want to flash a custom rom you can I would suggest stock 4.0.4. If its dropping 4G may be the crap 4.0.2 radios wait for an update or do it yourself like I said stock 4.0.4 imo is the best way to go you can find it in the Development section.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Is AOKP Milestone 4 a good rom. What is the recommended radio to flash? If I go to stock 4.0.4, will that affect anything as this phone is rooted and unlocked already?

Milestone 4 or Axiom are great Roms. Don't see why you would flash a stock ROM, other ROMs are very stable and offer a ton of customizations.

The thing about radios is that everyone's experience is different. I use the 4.0.4 CDMA/LTE radios but you'll also find that some people prefer hybrid radios.
I would recommend starting with the 4.0.4 CDMA/LTE radios because that's what I have had the best luck with and I use AOKP Milestone 4 as well.
Just make sure you read the directions carefully when flashing radios.

Hey All,
Long-time lurker, first-time post. Previous smartphones were Nexus devices (Sprint Nexus S, VZW Galaxy Nexus), so I never really needed to post. Everything was all there to tinker with.
I got the VZW HTC One a day or two after the HTCDev unlock was blocked, so I am stock, locked, and non-rooted. Quite an adjustment going from crack-flasher to locked-down, but I digress.
I was browsing around and noticed that an OTA was being pushed out, updating from 1.10.605.8 to 1.10.605.10. Having seen some others screwed by OTA updates, I know better than to even try to check for one, let alone accept installation. That, however, is where it gets interesting for me. I noticed that I am running 1.10.605.2. I haven't seen anything via Google searches, nor have I seen anything else on XDA regarding this build version.
So, on to my question: Can I be of any help with this build version that I can find no other mention of elsewhere? I work all day and have a wife and son at home, so I'm not on much, but I do check the forums in the mornings and evenings. If there's anything I can provide from my device that could be of help to someone, let me know, and I will do everything I can to provide it.
If you can, screenshot the software number in the About Device section.

there will be a sticker on your phones box it came in, on the outside, it will say what software version it has installed, see if it even matches..
also check the IMEI

maybe you got some early version that is S-OFF?

So now the question is, can this be useful in the exploit/unlock hunt, or is it just a fluke with currently unknown repercussions? Since my HBOOT is the same, I'm leaning towards fluke.
Anyway, if anyone wants me to try anything, let me know, and I will try as time permits.

Unfortunately I don't think it is useful unless it had a lower hboot or something, we can't downgrade, and whatever exploit that may have been in that software may have been patched before release and took longer to release who knows.
Just ordered a Galaxy S4 through Verizon Edge and if I'm understanding correctly, the old phone has to be traded in. Currently the phone is rooted and running Chillybean's CM10.2 ROM. Do I need to return the phone to stock and "un-unlock" it in order to avoid any problems with Verizon?

I've heard mixed reports. If it's something you can easily do, then I say do it. At the very least, flash a "stock" Rom. I doubt they seriously inspect the device, but I could be wrong.

The Verizon store closest to me isn't an "official" branch or something so I had to mail it. I hope whoever gets my old phone finds his way to this forum and gets his Jellybean on! I really HATED Gingerbread.
Just received the 5.1.1 OTA. look at the kernel build date. this thing was cooked up YESTERDAY. device feels a lot snappier!! This is the T-Mobile branded one.
http://pasteboard.co/5Mu7cnk.jpg
NO, the bootloader is not locked with the 5.1.1 update that was leaked.
Rather, "Factory Reset Protection" (an Android thing - not a Samsung thing!) is now an option, which allows you to lock the bootloader yourself, protecting your device from someone installing a custom recovery, wiping your device and making it their own. It makes the device somewhat less valuable, and therefore (supposedly) less likely to be stolen.

Tmobile. sorry
Okay guys so many people called me fake and I don't blame you..having 5.1.1 even when nexus devices don't have it is kinda suspicious but I need to clarify some things.. New boot loader is not locked like Verizon/ATT phones It's FRP, Factory Reset Protection. This is google's response to Icloud for stolen/lost devices.. I tried to flash twrp and cfroot and freaked out when i got the error about bootloader being locked...Now this doesn't mean Samsung/Tmobile will completely lock bootloaders in the future but we have to wait and see... phone seems to be really smooth and stable , however it looks like the camera needs some work done so I'm 100% this is not the final build and I guess I'm just lucky I got it this morning and be happy that Samsung has a build this stable with 5.1.1 which means official releases are not far.

Would you be able to check if the Auto-Brightness setting is fixed (check to see if it stays on Auto-Brightness), and if the Night clock is only lighting up necessary pixels on the AMOLED display? I can't wait for the rollout to hit my T-Mobile Edge! I'm hoping they improved the battery life some more too, it definitely doesn't last long enough.

The first units out up here have a locked bootloader. I would imagine the replacements do too. There was an engineering firmware from Sprint that you could flash to get root, but I'm not sure what happens after you're on it.. i.e. I don't think you can get off of it (at least easily), no recovery, no custom ROMs, etc..
There are a number of users who returned their W8 Note7 and bought a F or FD model, as the Exynos variant has an unlocked bootloader, recovery, root, etc..

I wish. I also have a W8 Note7. So far I've decided to keep it, although it hasn't been exchanged yet (registered, but coral blue and waiting forever). I may sell it and get a F or FD variant once known good ones are easily available.. or may get something else.. who knows..
For reference, see THIS post for the steps about the engineering bootloader/firmware. Feel free to read through that thread, but from everything I've read the bootloader is truly locked on our devices.
Oh, OEM unlock is a feature added in lollipop. As far as I know it's a standard feature and doesn't reflect the actual ability to unlock the bootloader. Disabling it can remove the FRP lock though.. Yes, I do know you need to use that when flashing ROMs, I had a HTC 10, S7 Edge (W8 Exynos model), and many other Androids before, and I rooted every single one of them. This is the first device I haven't, which is why I'm on the fence..

Just use the Spring Userdebug root and you will be good to go. Instructions are pretty basic. I have the N930W8 as well. The advantage is that you dont void your warranty or trip knox, but then you are stuck on an unchangablr kernel and cannot flash roms/kernels until someone decides to include the system.img and old kernel in their roms, which would be a lost cause, since maybe 3 people have rooted their canadian note 7's xD
BTW, can anyone help me out with systemui? I flashed the modded systemui that includes rom control, and can no longer use samsungs interaction control, which I absolutely need. Please help me out with possibly a zip I can flash that resets systemui to stock?

You cannot use that on the new firmware for anyone who got the update.
The OP is on a replacement device so he def cannot use it.

I used this on my original Note 7 as well as the replacement.
I got my replacement last friday, the phone was said to be manufactured Sep 6th, but I was definitely able to flash sprints userdebug on my new replacement..
I'm running it now, and its actually doing much better than the older device. Much much snappier and longer lasting.
Then again, you mentioned an update, and I usually avoid such things so I hadnt noticed any update. Could you ellaborate on that please? With some links if you can? ^.^

You must have got the device rooted before it updated....nice one!
The new firmware which gives the fixed devices the green battery icon and bad ones a big fat warning to turn the device in. And in some cases limits the charging to 60% tops.
I have all my update crap turned off so avoided it and some like you got lucky..others the damn phone updated immediately and others it came with the firmware.
You cannot odin the previous firmware either..its blocked. And there is no root for it even on unlocked bootloader devices like my dual sim exynos
Its all over the forums bro, easy to find more info but thats the overview of it.

Whaat thats absolute bull that Samsung would do this.
I'm super thankful I blocked the update services with Package Disabler right away then.. I didnt even intend to do it, but I figured I would just in case. I have to reflash the userdebug again though, theres no way it would auto update right?

It shouldn't especially now that your rooted, im not even rooted but have auto update off and also used package disabler and havent had a hint of an OTA thank god.
I dont like It either but under the circumstances i do understand why they would force an OTA like this.

Just managed to reflash sprint userdebug and root again (on the replacement). I was sketching out hard during the setup, saying to myself over and over "oh my god please dont auto update".
Thanks for all your help! Sucks that the Note 7 is essentially dead now, considering only very little people will have a rooted note 7.

Lol.....just now there is....there was not up until when i went to bed last night. Looks like Dr Ketan found a way around it by not having to flash the new bootloader.
This is what our talented developers do...find ways sround samsung screwing us....god bless them
