[Q] CM10 GPS fix? - HTC Wildfire S

I've just spent hours trying various things to fix GPS on my new CM10 ROM. Is there anything besides using FastFix app or waiting for GPS-Status to finally get a lock? Right now I don't even get a GPS lock on a single satellite

hey dude,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713
thats the fix that worked for me...
Create a new gps.conf using an editor on your computer. copy the box from the link into it anc change the COUNTRY and REGION according to your origin... (so it's austria and europe for you)...
Then copy it into /system/etc... you need a file manager with root permissions for that... reboot your phone and open the GPS toolbox that you have to download from google play... clear your A-GPS data and reload it... let the app search satellites... It will lock after 3-5minutes, but quicker when you connect next time... works really good for me...

Worked great! Thanks a lot!

no problem, mate. Took me a while to find that fix, but it wordks really well, even in cities with high buildings, forests or when it's cloudy... I can use my phone as a sat-nav thanks to it!

Is it just me or are all the radio's simply awful ?

Tried and tried and tried to get a decent radio, none of them appear to work well at all, I have used co pilot since i had it on my HTC Hero (which was also a little iffy too) i tried it today and i didn't even get a gps signal at all, the stock radio always got a lock within about 10 - 20 seconds,I have Core droid running at the moment (froyo with sense) which is a fantastic rom (build number 1.84.661.1) I am using the radio from the radio thread which matches my build number, I am on Orange uk and previous to having a a custom radio It was always getting a gps lock (on both maps and co pilot), mobile data was usually always on H and i never lost a call, wifi has always worked regardless of what radio i have had (on either phone) and still does, battery life is always poor but i think that goes with the territory of having a dhd, i'm presently overclocked to a max of 1.2ghz, usually 1152mhz, which i believe is using an undervolted kernel.
So I know that there is always a shadow of doubt of whether a specific radio will work on any given phone but surely there must be someone in england (london if pos) who has a working radio which i could know about, it would be a great help and would possibly help more than one person, maybe a thread about a specific rom, kernel, build number, location and Radio and how / if it has helped you, would be a good start, there might be a pattern showing as to what works and what doesn't.
Any help would be well appreciated.
Cheers.
Why don't you try to use the radio which you had when it still worked (the stock one)? If you're using a case it might also weaken your gps signal.
No problems with radio here mate.
I am using LeeDrOid v2.2.2 with radio 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2 with Kernel LeeDrOid-Ace-V2.2.8
Wifi signal is strong enough to be catched 2 floors away from my router.
GPS fix in CoPilot is within 20-30 secs.
Bluetooth works and 3G works great as well.
No radio / GPS problems here. Quite the opposite actually.
Try Fasterfix from the Market. CoreDroid may still comes with North American GPS config file and Fasterfix can change it to Europe
Thank you to everyone for answering, ill try what you both suggested, I wasn't aware of the gps being changed, so yep thanks a lot, ill try them all and report back.
Cheers.
Would your lack of signal coincide with using a case?
It seems that the Case Mate Barely There (metallic silver) does a very good job of shielding the phone from the GPS signal
I do use a case but its the chunky one by case mate, definitely there lol, Ive had it for a while, never really had any problems, but ill try without it anyway. Surely a metal roof of aa car would act more like a shield than a plastic and rubber case tho? Oh and I went for the radio suggested on this thread and I seem to be getting better results. Will try again on the wway to work tomorrow.
But you don't have the phone attached to the roof, do you? There's always somekind of clear view from the phone to the sky. I atleast notice a clear difference with the case off.

Hey OP, instead of using fasterfix, you might want to go to http://www.pool.ntp.org/ and check which servers are available in your country, then edit your gps.conf file (in system/etc) to reflect that as the one present now will probably say NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org. It worked for me. You can use GPS status from the market to check how many satellites you get.
Im using radio 12.35d.60.140fP_26.08.03.07_M and having no problems with it in the UK

Isn't this what fasterfix does for you (need root)?
There is a UK option within the app.

Well yeah, but if you do it manually you can add the extra servers, like
NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=0.europe.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=1.europe.pool.ntp.org
etc.
I'm not sure if fasterfix only adds one line or not, but at any rate you can get the job done without it, and chances are you will end up having to navigate to the directory to check gps.conf anyways, so might as well edit the file yourself.
There are also other things you can edit gps.conf with to adjust gps performance.

how do you edit the "gps.conf" file? I'm using ES File Explorer, and every time I add servers and then try to save it, it gives me an error and won't keep the changes I made. Should I delete Faster Fix?

Because you need a file explorer with root access to alter system files I guess. I know that ES has a root option, I think it only works with cyanogen and hiapk roms, not sure though. I use Root explorer. It's not free, but I end up using it so often to move files around and edit them, so it's definitely worth it.

Motorola Defy GPS Problem Solved - 14 April 2013

First fix will take 3 minutes in open sky.
Use GPS TEST in open sky.
Please give your feedback on this thread . Thanks

i'll try this on CM7 to see if the problem is solved...as the most problems are on CM7(not stock)

In CM7 & MIUI... this line is removed... so that may be creating the problem.
The initial ephemeris data is downloaded by a active gprs connection. Many people instantly start the gps application to check the satellite fixes after they install a ROM. During a new setup of ROM, the gprs is over burdened by lot of sync... hence if the ephemeris data is not downloaded on time... and they feel that the GPS is not working.

i know that location.cfg was altered on cm7/miui hence learn_store.bin wasn't there anymore
i've changed gpsconfig.xml and location.cfg with stock ones and modified that line.
I'll test gps navigation and report how/if changed
edit: i rather go for an accurate psitioning than instant gps fix
Great work there..kudos man!! Is 40402 the proxy port no. for Airtel GPRS? I'm kinda lost on what to put for TATA Docomo as there aren't any port nos. in the settings..
Always try the experiments in open sky
Always use GPS & Location on
I did all that. From your numbers -before reading your last post- I figured out that it was MCC/MNC #s; so mine is: China Mobile (46002)... --> the "(46002)" part is required isn't it?
After a few quick tests with Locus Pro, I can't really tell if anything is different. If I turn on wifi (agps) the lock is real quick, the reported accuracy is less then 10m, but in reality the position is always off by 50-150m...pretty much like before the tweaks.
But, like I already wrote on the cm7 thread before, gps is always not so accurate in dense urban areas filled with cellphone transmission towers, wifi access points, tall buildings and what not...
So I'll leave all this as it is now and keep monitoring.. hopefully, I'll be able to squeeze in a MTB ride sometimes soon...
Thanks for sharing all this anyway.. Cheers

Is true that in dense urban areas gps is not so accurate but the annyoing thing is that on stock motorola rom the positioning was spot on...now not so good:-s i wonder why? we still use same (proprietary) files like in stock rom

404 is MCC and 92 is MNC... but you need not touch those values....
Just do this:
In Menu-->Setting-->Wireless & Networks-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->Select the Profile you are using-->Click Name--> In that input box whatever you see is what you have to write in the location.cfg file of /system/etc

I had a thought it might be MCC/MNC but still wanted to be sure. My MCC is 405 and MNC is 03..so mine should be TATA DOCOMO INTERNET (40503) since my apn is TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNET. Hope it works. Thanks again.
so this fix is for stock roms only?
This fix is for any motorola defy using stock or CM7 or CM9 or ICS roms
As a defy user, I also found that the gps is not working, after I have rooted it long time ago. I have just tried to fix it using the method provided, but after doing what you ask me to do, the matter gets worse! Originally a few satalittes could be searched when I ran the GPS test app, but now there is no satalitte that can be searched... the gps simply is out of service.. I am a Hong Kong resident. Could anyone kindly provide me with a way out? thanks!
No improvement
Hey guys, thanks so much for the advice.
I'm on T-Mobile US, using CM7.1 jordan.
I updated the location.cfg file as you suggested. I did not originally have the Default line in it so I just added it. I deleted the files recommended and copy the gps.jordan.so file, calibrated compass and rebooted.
Is there anything I check to see that I did this right? Any info I can provide for someone to check my work? Thanks again.
Does not work for me
followed all the steps by the second method, but still my phone reboot when i use GPS and WIFI :-(
using defy mb525 with the default rom (rooted)
Guys I have updated the first post with a new set of files for making Motorola Defy GPS work better. Please comment here if you find it better and if you have any suggestions.

To test GPS
Always "Use GPS satellites" in menu-->settings->Location & Security.
Always "Enable Use wireless networks" in menu-->settings->Location & Security.
Always use automatic in data and time setting.
Always perform the testing near a open window where you and your defy can see sky.
After installing all the above.... go to setting...privacy... reset and it will reboot. Wait for 5 minutes after you enter the initial google registration login. It is assumed that you have a valid gprs APN or wifi working during this process.

Thanks for this research work! I am really happy, than someone cares about this. I am also suffered from the problem, that I can't get a fast fix, if the download of the latest AGPS data is 6hours or more ago.
So I exactly did what you suggested.
A few questions to that.
1) I found that my /data/location/gpscmd file is empty (0 byte) - is there something wrong in myy system?
2) The 2nd part of your lge.cert docu is not clear to me. How can I install lge.cert ? This is rwrwrw, not x. And even if it is executable I don't know how to execute it (using root browser)
3) about location.cfg: I remember that some time ago the moto-servers failed and there was are recommendation to exchange to google servers... But this might be obsolete now - this is just a hint.
4) the gps..jordan.so file has same size before. I didn't check it binary. Is this the same lib?
5) I don't understand why it is necessary to use the setting/location/use wireless networks. I don't like the idea to involve google here - and this is only helpful, if I am online.
Now my observations (short term).
Initial start with wifi on (to download AGPS data):
My impression is, that time to fix is longer and numbers of sats are smaller than before. Might this have to deal with some initial setting which is for you maybe ASIA but has for me to be Europe?
After 2h the fix was quite fast (40s). it behaves a bit different than before. Originally I have a few sats fast, but to fix them takes some time. Currently in the first 20s nothing is to see, but than the fix is rather fast.
Thanks and best regards!
PS:
Do you know this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24014309&postcount=1) with downloading and usage of an lto file? Is this used in your approach too?

Wireless network are part of aGPS as the cell towers also provide the location info if your carrier has made proper settings on cell towers based on its location.

[Q] GPS fix for galaxy w

i've noticed that our phone's specs says GPS, which means it is not Assisted-GPS (which, by the way, uses cellular network to aid GPS system).
but on the phone's settings, there is an option to enable 'use wireless networks'. is this an option to turn on 'A-GPS'?
if so, having turned that option on, my old sony ericsson x10 mini pro can still get a fix in under 5 minutes. the galaxy w on the other hand, takes forever to get a GPS fix, and has fewer satellites found that the small x10 mini pro.
can this be solved by a fix, or our phone never really has a-gps capabilities?
thanks in advance!
In specifying the website of Samsung Galaxy W has GPS and AGPS support.
I don't know what's wrong with so many people's phones, but I can get a GPS lock in under one minute.
Where do you live?

Happens to me sometimes, but this all depends on where and how this the weather.
i'm from the Philippines. must be the weather. i will give it a go later, once the sky cleared up.
Much like my SGS2, my wifes SGW took ages to get a lock (about 10-15 mins) the first time after purchase, but is much quicker (takes about 15 seconds) now.
I usually use AGPS and fix is almost immediate.
I however test the GPS only functionality while in Switzerland in the Christmas holidays and it never took me more than 3 minutes to have a GPS fix (using Google Maps with data cached and the pre cache function).
i am in the philippines atm and been testing it.... commonly it takes me less that 3 min
There is a problem with Samsung devices.
In Motorola Quench/Cliq XT, Defy and Milestone 1, GPS fix wait for 10 seconds.
Hi. Good news.
GSP fix indoor in 10 seconds in my device with TuxBrothers Rom.
I talked to him and wait autorization to release the rom link.
I dont know diference, but with KerzaV2, gsp wait many minutes to fix positon.

Hi Bro,
I get a lock in llike less than a minute. Faster even under clear skies. You might want to consider editing the gps.conf file as well (your phone must be rooted though). Haven't edited mine to point to something local but will do in a couple of days probably.
You are so lucky. I edited my gps.conf to nearly every countey but i never get a gps fix under a minute.

^ you just have to pull the gps.conf file from /etc/gps.conf and edit the values. there's a link from a few post earlier on this thread.
btw, I've noticed that using gps status, my phone now can detect more gps satellites, but it still can not get a "fix" under 5 minutes. I've already edited the gps.conf file to point to asia servers.
I've read somewhere (galaxy tab) that they have to edit a file in /system/lib/.... Do you guys think that it can also be applied to our phone?

Same problem here.
Changing the gps.conf to europe NTP server makes detecting 7 or 8 satellites within 10 sec. but Fixing is still taking time ....

[Q] GPS drop out

Brand new Huawei P6 ... GPS horrible!!! .. takes ages to lock on, and then when it does [sometimes] cannot use NAV for any reliable length of time as GPS drops out and stays out .... oh, some times it might come back on again .. but long after the waypoint has been passed making the navigation service completely useless ....
Have upgraded to B111 via the GUI on the phone. Android 4.2.2 but ... no joy.
I have been trying to find a reason .. thought maybe it was app related and that myabe gmaps or nav contributing to the issue ... so installed some GPS helper apps to try and troubleshoot the issue, but they seem to be affected by the same problem ...
I am annoyed and frustrated as i rely heavily on GPS ... the Ascend G600 i had previously worked flawlessly!!!
Has anybody got any clues on this ... :crying:
Try TopNTP. Play around with the settings. One of them might speed up lock on tremendously.
My fastest lock on was 7 seconds, even with GPS cold start. Inside my apartment!

Thnx for the suggestion UpUp ... but unfort no joy either with TopNTP.
So did a factory reset and first up Google Maps Navigation finds my location and draws the route to destination .. even get a voice announcement to send me on my journey ... BUT from that point on the GPS icon continually flashes with a notification "Searching for GPS ..." that continues ad infinitum with the map locked on my initial position ... suddenly it might jump to some totally inaccurate location ... and then finally the voice announces Lost GPS Connection ...
However, on one occassion .. after 'searching for location' for about 15 mins .. all of a sudden my location is pinned as accurate and the navigation went along smoothly for about 3 klm ... then "Lost GPS Connection" again ... never to return!!
I have tried TopNTP, GPS Status & Fix, GPS Fix, Essential GPS ecc ... but no joy!!
I cannot believe just how crappy the Google Maps Navigation is on this highly regarded HUAWEI phone is!!!
Surely i cant be the ONLY one with this gripe??? But at this stage i can find very little on the net about it ... very frustrating!!
PS: At one stage i got GPS Status & Fix to lock on in smart time 7 seconds with maybe 6 out of 9 sats .. but then when i loaded Google Maps Navigation, even GPS Status & Fix could no longer get a fix!!!
Does anybody know if there is an issue with the software Google Maps Navigation????
Help IS neeeeded .. thnx!
Mmm... wonder if your P6's GPS is defective. You should get service since it's new.
I read a lot about slow lock-on, but it is a common complaint on most brand names. Nothing can't be remedied by TopNTP or GPS Fix.

Okay .. fair call .. i was starting to think the same way due to lack of similar cases returned via Google search.
Spoke to their local service centre ... after describing the issue was promptly told to return the phone for servicing, even though i pressed for a firmware upgrade! Even though they would not admit it, sounds like they believed it to be a hardware issue.
So have to wait 2-3 days for an email to arrange pickup instructions .. then 2-3 weeks for resolution!!! But i have no option, save throw it in the bin and try another brand/model ... obviously at my expense! .. wtf ... will just have to be patient.
Will advise on outcome.
Thnx
This is what I did,
go to dialer, press
*#*#2846579159#*#* then go to item5, background setting, next to AGPS settings, change the positioning method to autonomous, on service location, change to supl.google.com. This will speed up the GPS lock. I am using ASIA phone, not sure if your firmware is similar. Good luck.

Alternatively, if your phone is rooted, you can replace the gps.conf file under the System\etc\ with the one I am using now.
I actually got it from the LG Flex and played around with it. It works perfactly. When you have Internet on, it fix the SAT really quick.
You need the Root Explorer to change the permission to overwrite or delete.

GPS doesn't work

Hi. I have n7100 with stock rom btu 4.4.2 with out root.
In Last time the gps stop work.. If I am try locate or use it. The logo of gps flashing but not came stable and apps doesn't find location.
I was check with gpstest app and there its work. After 30 second was gps signal stable. But in use another apps doesn't have..
In waze. Igo. Google maps. Pokemon-go. And more. Doesn't have location.. What can be the problem?
okay.
first go to your location settings and there check whether location is in high accuracy mode. next turn on gps+wifi/data and make sure you are in open area with no radio distraction and then try again the app where you gps doesnt work.
can you root your phone. its super easy and safe. if yes then you can install app like fastergps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps&hl=en which will replace your current A-GPS data with A-GPS data of your country for faster location fixation and provide stable gps signal.
I try that. All on. Gps. Data. Wifi and check. Is find location. But works by wifi. When I am came for place with out any wifi avaible. No more location.
I want root. But doesn't have try with this. Have option easy root with out need a pc?
Up. Help?
Hi again. I make root for device. With kingoroot
I was used some apps from store. Downloaded new data files for country but Nothing help.. Its same state.
The app 'gps test' success find and lock gps very fast. But all other apps doesn't find gps..
Update. Problem solved
I was found post on another forum of similar problem. Is update later that open screws on back of the device make the problem. I check it and found that almost screws in my device was little open. I screw them back and now the gps realy work
