Miss the custom ROMs? - LG Optimus G (International)

For those that are using this phone, do you miss the fact that this is a "stock ROM" and not a "custom ROM" like those highly developed SGS/SGS2/SGS3 ROMs? Or to make it a more valid comparison, that it's as highly developed as the AT&T Optimus G ROMs? Ever since I got my SGS Captivate a few years ago, I swore that I'll never go back to stock ROM. But here I am... with a LG Optimus G that I paid $280 for.. Don't really want to sell it, but the lack of custom ROMs is really making me depressed haha.

for now,i just want to root 4.1.2.

I'm running CM10.1 (with 4.2.1 of course) so no complaints here.

Could you explain what it is is custom roms that makes a phone so much better for you op?
I hear this same thing from a lot of people.. they claim that they can never go stock again to the point where they will avoid phones simply due to lack of custom roms..
I'm fairly ignorant toward this all and don't understand why this is such an issue for some people.. I am using stock rom on the og and love it..... ?

It all depends. Not everyone likes CM, AOKP or AOSP roms.
Personally I hate CM and AOKP. When I had the GNEX, I only ran AOSP based roms.
When I had the i9100, I ran stock based Sensation rom.
I preferred the stock based rom to the GNEX AOSP rom.
Everyone wants a Nexus type vanilla rom but to be honest they are too blah for me.
I actually really like the LG UI and would be perfectly happy with a stock based JB rom.

I pose the same question over at the Sprint section. Personally flashing 2 to 3 ROM's a week is a waste of time because the majority off ROM's that I dealt with are pretty much all the same besides a little theming here and there.
If you have a need to flash so much then something obviously was wrong with the previous rom that makes you want to flash another rom.
I'll take a small developing community that has a few good roms that get updated over a community with thousands or roms that are all pretty much the same with a lot of crappy ones in between.

What do you guys think of the ROM situation? Favorites? Most hated? Which team deserves my support? Who are these people?
I need more posts so I can talk in the big-boy forums.
Most roms out so far are pretty good! I'm running FreeGS3 v0.0.7 and its superb. also, CyanogenMod10 is really good!
Was running CM9 nightly, then tried CM10, and am now back on stock. Mainly decided to go back to stock after the unofficial announcement that Samsung is prepping and *close* to pushing JB to these devices.

You sure about that? Yeah i wouldn't count on it. The whole "close" thing is almost certainly merely referring to the international models. Carriers still have to take their sweet time bloating it up with their stuff. I'd guess that we'd get it sometime early next year or late q4

Yep some pretty good ROMs out there.. i've been on Blazer for a while now. Gets the job done. It just gives me something to do, escape reality through technology, and some kind of social connection with this badass forum.
Sure wish i could contribute something to the development world though..
Please omit my last post, I can't stand stock ROMs for this device. CM10 = The way to go. just my opinion though
I usually run rooted stock at first then flash a ROM that has things I like in it. I used to be one of those flashaholics back when I had my Evo but not so much any more. So far, I've only flashed 2 ROMs. Rooted my stock when I first got the phone, flashed Blazer ROM 1.3 (updated to 1.6 later), and just last night I flashed AOKP.
I'm really picky when it comes to ROMs. Battery life is huge to me, but I'm a sucker for shiny things like Jelly Bean.
In the past I would stick to ROMs based on the stock ROM, as I felt they had less problems and better battery life. However, CM & JB are hard to leave once you've flashed it. JB just seems right!

Whats not working in CM10,is it daily driver yet?
I been running CM10 as well. Was on blazer Rom for awhile but it's hard going back to TouchWiz after getting a taste of jelly bean.
For me it's good enough as a daily drive but I'm on one of the older builds that had Bluetooth a2dp working although it cause in-call volume control to not work. Currently though on the latest builds, a2dp isn't working.
Other than that, it runs great for most part.
Do these Rom make for a longer battery life? If so what are your battery lifes before/after?

Hello Peeps!

Im not new here because i have always looked around the forums when i had older phones. Now that I have a galaxy s 3 for tmobile, i felt the need to get on here and realize the true potential of this beast phone.Very interested in android developement and making this phone shine. Im ready for everyones input on whatever i have to say and will be all ears.
This phone shines out of the box. There is no need to worry about losing your imei anymore. So you can root and flash normally now. My opinion. Cm is losing its flavor. All the features of touch wiz are amazing and not really worth losing.

Glad to have you here. I'm running the euroskank nightlies. Got jelly bro indeed?
Cyanogen mod is not losing its swag. A lot of them including Cyanogen work for Samsung.
Miui team as well.
That's why touchwiz doesn't suck as much.
Still sucks though. Jk

I use to never flash anything besides cyanogen mod. Ever since the g1 days. I had the Htc one S and gave sense a chance for the first time and altho I never felt quite comfortable I found it pretty nice and less bloated than previous builds. I then upgraded to this beast (sgs3) and I absolutely love touchwiz. I don't see me flashing cm until most bugs are sorted out and if they add a better camera, and the touchwiz motion shortcuts which I find myself using more than I thought.
I don't see what people don't like about touchwiz. It's clean and simple which is what made me fall in love with cm. I'm sure cm probably is less bloated under the hood but I'm not ready to part with touchwiz. I'll wait for cm10 stable.

overwhelmed with JB options

I've had my sprint gnex for about a week now. maybe two weeks, I forget. Anyway, 4.0.4 ICS is mind-blowing compared to 2.3.5 that I had on my rooted S-on Evo 4g (I did de-bloat the stock rom). The fact that it's not a Sense or TouchWiz rom is the best part of all, and really I find that I have no desired functionality that would require rooting or flashing of any kind. However... a lot of the additions in JB look really awesome and I'd like to check into those at some point in the near future. I'm comfortable with the idea of rooting and flashing. After I rooted my Evo I may have actually laughed out loud for being as paranoid and anxious as I was.
Here's my concern: after trudging through the sprint gnex dev forum, there's a lot of roms and kernels available. At this point I'm not so concerned with a kernel, but I'd like some help narrowing down the options to one or maybe two roms to get started with. Basically I'm looking for one that's as close to what Google would give me if they were releasing to sprint devices. I would also be cool with one that's as close to what sprint might release in an official OTA.
I was never crazy about trying CM roms (or other AOSP based ones for that matter) on the Evo just because I wasn't crazy about having to flash back and forth between stock roms for PRLs and profiles. I'm not sure how often that would really have to be done, but I won't consider that a deal breaker if it gets me into an ideal rom.

MMuzzy's AOSP is as close to OTA stock as you'll find. In both form and build quality.
Like the above, CM10 is as stock as you'll find. There are other very close to stock with internal performance tuning.

I prefer AOKP to CM, but the last few AOKP builds have been horrible on battery and in terms of someone wanting a custom experience and not really knowing what they want, I point them to CM.
paranoidandroid is just cm10 with more options lol
I'm trying to be a good forum member and search out my own answers before posting them, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding much info about CM10 from their own website. First of all, they don't have a subforum for the samsung gnex at all (just the google variant), and most of what I have skimmed across on the forums seems to be related to either CM 7 or 9. Should I be looking in the Google Galaxy Nexus CDMA forum over there? Do we have much here on xda for CM10 aside from a dev thread?
Still need to look at paranoidandroid, I'm not opposed to a few extra options on top of what CM10 has already
Edit:
Paranoid looks like awesome, like the ability to use the tablet UI, but I think I'll wait for that one to mature a little more since I'm just getting started with roms!
I'm also gonna have to say mmuzzy's stock AOSP ROM. It's what we would have had from Google if we had AOSP support, IMO.

All the touchwiz rom are stable, the difference between them are themes and features like multi window. 4.2 AOSP roms are a w.I.p imo, but the little bugs can be tolerated.

The other thing i liked having for the Epic, was I was able to switch back and forth between the stock rom and CM9 for Sprint updates. Can i still do that with the GS3? I was looking for the Stock Rom to have as a zip but did not find it on the forum. Helps with Sprint updates

CM is an AOSP style rom.

what does CM10 offer that the stock rom does not?
Fo sho its the Rom to have and use is the Chemistry Rom because I have a GS3 fleshed to boost and all my main functions I need all work with this ROM. My mms and my voice mail. And with Ktweaks kernel I am getting some serious battery time on this ROM so its over all the perfect ROM right now to have. And my man Sac is there every step of the way to give support and help with any issues
If you use cm10 or any aosp or aokp rom you lose all the goodies in touchwiz like motion effects.

Most of the roms in the Dev section are rock solid (minus a few bugs which are normal in almost everything) the only way to figure out which you are going to like is to read the OP of a few that sound interesting, flash and take it for a drive (give a day or two typically) unless you can't stand it. MOAR, TPR, and FAT ASS (Cartman Edition of TPR) are all great TW based roms, offer all the fun of normal TW.. Incredible themeing options via Morphology.
Free GS3 is another great rom (from what i hear) as well. I haven't personally ran this one either, but does work with Morphology for themeing options.
Just scan the dev section. You'll find a good fit.

look around in the Android Development section if she's more into the stock S3 look and feel. some great options in there like i747z and CSROM

Definitely a matter of personal choice. Whether you go with my Intergalactic ROM, enewman17's, upndwn4par, or even more that I have not mentioned, chances are that you will receive a good quality experience on this phone. We all work together to make it better as a matter of fact. Take a look at each thread, flash a ROM, make a nandroid backup of your settings if you like it, try another, come back if you preferred the last one. We are fortunate to have many talented devs here who dedicate themselves to making this phone the best it can be. Good luck and regards.
I can't say "most" since I haven't tried them all, but these have been my favorites - simple, very stable, great battery life, de-bloated, no BS, just work great:
ICS - KyanROM
JB - Ultimatum S3
i like cyanogen mod but I am currently on Liquid Smooth RC2 4.2.2 rom and so far so good
