Initial lag on first swipe of home screen???...Still Stock. - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So Ive had my t-mobile S3 for a few days now. Ive loved it so far, Ive only had it for a few days, so i have not rooted it yet or even looked at the dev section for custom roms. All my previous phones have been rooted and had custom roms, but have not had the chance or desire to do it/read up on it on my S3 yet...
Anyway, to my question. After I initially unlock the phone and am at the first home screen, when I go to swipe it either way to change screens, I have lag. After that initial swipe and lag I can swipe smoothly. Its just that first swipe that gives me lag. This is the most powerful device I've had, so I am surprised to see the lag. Im assuming its touchwiz and the phone probably takes a moment to ramp up the cpu? Im not against rooting and rom'ing it, just have not yet and wondering if others had this or noticed this issue while still completely stock? If so, are there any transitions or anything I can change, or do i just deal with it until I root it and throw on an awesome rom?
Thanks

It's just coming out of deep sleep and at q low CPU clock to save power. It's normal.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah you should relax while we all can admit TouchWiz Sucks its not that bad, Even having power saving on should not affect a little task like that. This phone is really fast stock so don't feel you need to root just because of that. Now if bloatware really bothers you, carrier IQ then you can go on and flash away.

Nothing is perfect...phones..electronics...cars..houses...you name it. Everyone expects everything to run smooth or they freak out. Its the nature of the beast...live with it...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

My GS3 does it. My iPod touch 4th generation does it. My Galaxy Exhibit 4G did it.
Pretty normal stuff, though it tends to annoy me as well.

Uninstall android....no lag ever lol..jk. ive never seen an android stock phone lag free...not even the droid dna....its part of life..

Normal. My does that aswell. On both touchwiz and nova launcher.

thanks everyone. Ive had android since the beginning (well almost, mt3g). So I'm used to the lag that android sometimes has. but to be honest, i was really surprised to see it on this phone. I thought it was powerful enough hardware wise and the software tweaks (project butter act) that I was just surprised to see the lag (i know touchwiz slows it down). I've noticed a little more here and there...
Any way, glad to know its normal for this phone being stock, I just did not expect it. Guess Ill have to root it and play around with some custom roms to get that smoothness Im looking for

Yea I notice the lag on start up to but after a couple of seconds its good.

You know it's weird, I used to have the same issue, so I know exactly what you're talking about. But I don't have it anymore for some reason and I'm not quite sure when it went away. I flashed a stock rooted Jelly Bean rom to get root, but that's the only thing I've done to it.

Once you get past the little bit of lag...she is butter smooth....

[Q] Is the Galaxy Nexus any good?

Hi, Im thinking of buying a gal.... but i was wondering some stuff,
1 : Is the phone good? Does it lagg and stuff like that.
2 : Is there many custom mods?
3 : What are the Good sides and the bad
Thanks in advance
Sry for my bad english, My grammer sucks
It's good, like it better than my old Galaxy S2.
Some mods, I haven't done much to mine though besides sticking in the sim card and exploring the phone.
Good sides - It's pretty awesome.
Bad - Screen rotation's slow on some apps..that's all I have so far.
Probably should have posted in the QA section.
Get it. I'm coming from iOS. Well, still use it. But this is the only phone I would use with android on a daily basis. Yeah there are cons, but overall no regret. Customizing, this is the phone u want. I predict this phone will only get better and be supported for a long time. Good luck with your decision

It's great.
But it is a dev. phone, expect some bugs.
Overall I love it, and I think it's relatively beg-free compared to my N1 when I got that one and my expectations.
It is a lovely phone.
Is the screen really bright and is the volume of notifications really loud ?
The build in speaker sucks pretty hard. You have to use apps like volume+ to be able to hear your notifications in a louder environment.
But the screen is simply awesome.
Oh, and ice cream sandwich too

1. yes, once in a while here and there
2. dont know, i dont use custom mod
3. 4g, ok screen. bad battery life.
I came from an HTC Evo 4G.
First thing that I STILL can't get over after a weeks time is the screen! it wows me every time I turn it on!
I have gotten the phone to lag at some points but that's when I'm pushing it pretty hard. That's not too bad because once I load an over clocked kernel on it the lag should be gone for good.
overall the phone is simply amazing! I think I'll still be very happy with my purchase even after all the big 2012 models are announced in the next couple of months.
can't go wrong with a nexus!
EDIT: the phone is very snappy! when I say I've gotten it to lag, I mean it's not that often and I'm really working the phone hard to see it stutter but that was normal use with my evo even with OC and CM7.1

Seriously? Ok screen? What screen is better? Btw, your Miley Cyrus profile pic makes me believe your sight ain't that great.
Signal issues and mtp are the only issues I'm having. The phone is smooth as butter. Best on the market right now.
Okay thanks going to buy it as soon as my local store got it in stock

Are you still rooting and using roms

I've been doing all that stuff on the last three phones that I've had ( Droid x, Droid 3, galaxy nexus) and I've done if for fun never because I had to do to something I didn't like about the phone. Now that I have at&t s3 I've not had the urge to do it. As of now I am on a rom but really thinking about going back to stock. I had to try out cm10 which was cool. But I think I finnaly have a phone that I feel is very good at giving me what I want. The other phones it just felt better on roms. This phone runs the smoothest and is the fastest one I've ever had, even the battery is great. Roms are fun but I got a little tired of all the setting up I had to do after downloading. Still kinda fun but I find myself putting on a rom then not being blown away with it like I used to be. I think the sg3 is that good of a phone. I would like to know if some of you feel the same way with this phone. I do think that I'm going to go back to stock and unroot as well. But the cool thing is that its easy to root again if something comes out that I've got to have. I kinda feel that there are a lot of people that have rooted other phones before but are not doing it now. I could be wrong I just don' see as many threads about it, at least not on other forums. Granted that this forum is mostly about roms.

Yea rooted stock flies! By far the best TouchWiz has ever been on any device! I like aosp but its not quite ready for daily driving.

Though I will probably try CM10, I actually have not even thought twice about changing ROMs with this phone. I've been happy with what I have, and it is as smooth as I could want. But ... who knows, that may change once CM10 becomes completely stable.
I was in the same boat - I couldn't stop flashing new roms and tinkering with my old android phones (DX, Inc., Thunderbolt)
Samsung did a great job with this device and touch wiz. I don't feel cyanogen is really necessary anymore. I will stay rooted because I want to. I don't like the adware that is involved from carriers plus carrier iq is horrible. Cyanogen and aokp were cool for older phones because they added features phones didn't have. But these days with the features and capabilities of phones these days. I think they are more for the minimalist. The I have had my phone using 1.6 gigs of my team and there was this no issue. I can say I agree that this phone hit the nail on the head. Good to see other people agree

But I honestly think root is necessary. But mostly because I like my rooted apps.

I'd like to flash a rom eventually, but I'm scared of losing IMEI hahaha
honestly though, stock rooted is pretty much the way to go. I love AOSP based roms on my past phones, but I've always hated the android camera app, so I may be sticking to stock rom for a while. Jelly bean anyone?
I've decided to keep root just in case. Tw is a lot better then it was when I had the vibrant. Not perfect, but neither was stock on the gnex. I'm really curious what jb well be like with tw. So I say good job Samsung on making a phone that you can say does or almost doesn't need a rom. I would like to see a jb tw rom. I would try that out for sure.

This phone has really curbed my flashaholism. Although I do get the urge at times and tried cm10 and aokp. However at the moment this phone is great how it is. I just wish I didn't sell my sgs2 and could just flash that when the mood strikes
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
I don't want to lose the functionality of the phone suck as motion and what not, so until there is a fully function Jelly Bean ROM with all the camera functions, I will stay stock. I may root just to back up and use certain root apps.
i'm using CM10, but at this point i'm scared to even flash back to stock, because i DO miss the Touchwiz features with the gestures and all, but don't wanna end up losing my IMEI and all, especially since noone has completely pinned down exactly WHAT causes it to happen.... i'll stick with CM10, and then i'll take my chances flashing back to stock and adding a ROM once official JellyBean has been released for the GSIII, so i have JellyBean PLUS the Touchwiz features.
I feel is good and all I didn't flash rooms for two weeks after I got it, but now I'm rooted I dk I just like aokp and cm9 theme manager probably the biggest reasons I'm running aokp stock rom is not bad just the bloatware kills it

I've restored stock nandroid backups from CM10, CM9 and AOKP about 10 times. I really think the IMEI thing was overblown / made worse by human error. I wouldn't worry about it.
Anyway, it was interesting to see the AOSP progress, but they are a long way from matching the stability, speed and features of a properly de-bloated stock ROM.
I gotta agree with the majority here.
I too was a "flashaholic" when I had my evo.
No that I upgraded and I'm using a Samsung s3 for the first time I feel little need to root. There are a few apps I would like that requires root which would be the general reason why I would root.
The stock Rom is great for me as well.
Another reason why I held back rooting is the problem with losing mei/imei for the phone. I don't think it's over blown, especially when you read most of the people's comments who have lost there's and some of them aren't newbs.
Anyways Samsung did a pretty good job to curb my flashing habits.
Oh, there's only one Rom if I were to flash that I would want....paranoid android Rom.

I would have to agree. Stock rom is quite smooth (though I like some of the animations some roms used). I tried a couple roms, and they were nice, but I just missed some key features from stock. I am rooted on stock though, as there are some apps I really need/want.
Once cm10 is more stable and/or they make a dual boot kernel similar to the one for the sprint sgs3, then I will switch over. For the time being though, stock is amazing and I will probably stick with it for a bit.

ive had some issues with touchwiz fc on me nd ive never rooted... im running apex now nd i love it... no immediate plans to flash.. like one user said its gonna take one hell of a rom to get me to go thru the rooting process. This phone is solid straight from Sammy... sound is awesome, speed is awesome, gps locks within 2 SECONDS INDOORS!!!!! ... Not but a handful of things that could be improved upon but not worth flashing to me...

I agree...I've had many android devices and each one I tinkered and rooted. For some reason I'm not too interested in rooting and flashing ROMS. Partly maybe because of the IMEI issue, but even before that came up, I was content with this TWiz. And I don't like TWiz, I'm more a Sense fan.
I say, good job Samsung!!

ICS whats the point?

I just pulled the trigger on ics with Kies. I had not gotten the ota update. But with the fix figured I'd try it. I'm not impressed. Some silly minor interface tweaks. Stronger anti alias. Face detect. Wooo.
Chrome sucks. The rendering engine doesn't reflow text. It uses twice as much memory at idle. It's horrible with no pluses that I can see. And of course the battery drain. It's pretty much just a pig with lip gloss.
Am I missing something? At this rate I'm going back to gb. I wouldn't want ics ona galaxy s 4. Is this typical of Android upgrades?
Gingerbread has been my favorite os for android since having it on my og Tmobile g1, ICS just seems like a cluttered battery hog.
Hopefully jellybean fixes the mess that is ics and key lime pie blows away all previous versions with a complete ui overhaul, not impressed with ics ui.

ICS/JB UI = Meh
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
well i guess i'll chime in. gb blows compared to ics/jb on every aspect. dont use stock roms, there are plenty of straight vanilla/CM builds of either version to fit anyones liking. GB is old, blocky, and slow compared to newer versions of android. Don't base your opinion of an updated OS off of what samsung gives you.
You're not going to see many ui changes when using a mfg skinned os. If you want to see the major changes try an aosp build, like pure aosp, cm, or aokp. And most of your issues are because you didn't do a clean install and more than likely have an app not updated to work on ics causing a wakelock which eats ram and battery. Try doing a full clean install of cm9 or aosp ics and then comeback and say there were no major changes over GB
We are legion, for we are many.

OK. I went back to el29 which of course required a wipe and backup. And as soon as I got back, I got the ota notification. I figured well I just wiped and have everything backed up sooooo. I'm back with ics but on a pretty fresh platform. Chrome seems better now. But I am thoroughly annoyed by the lack of reflow.
Oh and I didn't unroot so now I have no root and a useless su button. No harm there right? And I did goof around with some other launchers including straight ics. It is a tad less of a resource pig now. Is ics more sensitive to app shutdowns than gb?
To get the ICS look which I recommend go to settings, apps then hit all, go down to twlauncher and clear defaults hit the home key and select twlauncher I set it as default you can change the icons at the bottom of the home screen to whatever you want since you probably don't want the sprint id on the bottom. There is a lot of killer things in ICS it is much improved over GB in my opinion.

Sent from my Malata SMBA1002 using xda app-developers app
Dolphin seems to be a battery drain for me although I like it pretty well. It doesnt reflow either on ics, so it's obviously employing the same rendering engine as stock/chrome. Where might I find the reflow setting? It works tolerably with autozoom, but I had gotten used to reflow where I could view any page in full at any zoom.
Its working reasonably well after the reset/install, but I'm overall not particularly impressed with the interface vs. gingerbread. I can see how some might think it more ios-like. But if I valued looks over function . . . .
And yes, I have played with the native launcher, ADW, and Launcher Pro, as well as Nova. For some reason, Pro and Nova crashed a bit, but ADW has been stable and is my default for now.
The upgrade to ICS from GB was great for me. I admit I had a few issues in the beginning, but most were shortly resolved by custom roms such as CM. I am now on a CM10(Jelly Bean) based rom and love it. Project Butter is amazing. I would take ICS or JB over GB any day, even with the annoying battery problems. I carry a spare with me anyways because of my crazy schedules. One can never be too careful.
Just received a replacement from samsung because I sent mine in for repair after bricking a while back. Long story short my repair was placed on hold for two weeks waiting on parts, they sent me a BNIB Epic 4G Touch for the wait.
It came pre-loaded with FF18 and I'll say, this thing is running smooth. I have no issues at all. GPS locks with 6 meter accuracy within 5 seconds, battery life is fine, chrome works no problem, etc.
Perhaps you need to do a clean install...

I started off only flashing leaked updates. I was scared to brick my phone with anything truly custom, but i just couldn't resist cM10. I tried it because I felt limited by touchWiz and now I realize hide truly right I was.
Do not judge Android updates based on a manufacturer skin. they are going to make sure they keep a consistent look and feel. JB offers a ridiculous amount of customization and google now is just too much fun.

Anybody feels the S4 was rushed? Especially software wise?

So I've had my S4 since the 30th, pre-ordered it on the 29th at 3:00AM.
After using it now for about 5 days, I am pretty disappointed in the software. Basically none of the "COOL" features it has works very well, especially the head scrolling. Terrible...
The smoothness on the phone is so utterly inconsistent it bothers me till no end. 60 percent of the time, operations are silky smooth, 40 percent there is a motherload of lag. Simply closing an app will cause the animation to "stutter" as it closes. Sometimes swiping between screens will cause the phone to stutter, opening the camera sometimes is instant, sometimes it take a couple seconds! WTF that drives me insane on a phone that pulls in 12,000+ quadrant scores and wipes the floor with pretty much everything in antutu.
I blame Samsung, their TW is definitely not ready for prime time when skinned on top of 4.2.2. Seemed like a rush job to get the phone shipped with 4.2.2 so they can get the upper hand on the HTC One.
TW works absolutely flawless on 4.1 for example on the Note 2 and GS3, there was hardly a hint of lag on those phones. So what do you guys think? TW not ready for 4.2.2 or is it because it's not optimized for the new Snapdragon processor?
i had a s3 and a s2 and a s1 and all these problems people complained about was stil there. I dont remember tw being that fluid on my s3 i remember i couldnt wait to root it to add cm on it. A article i read said it best "Android phones have a reputation for customizability. And to a certain extent, they almost require tinkering to optimize the experience. Theres always gonna be something we dont like about our phones thats why we love to tinker and change it!
wasnt really rushed, just touch wiz isnt meant for performance as much as gimmicky features, which all work just fine for me.
Though the debloated wicked rom is enough to keep me happy for now. as soon as paranoid android or P.A.C drops for our phone im on them in a heart beat. I just need per app dpi to be happy, with any phone
Wicked rom speeds the lag up a bit and im sure things will only get better..
21k antutu score stock, 25k after wicked... Im sure an Oc kernel will help too

I actually think the software is rather well polished. The theme is still not my cup of tea, but whatever. Really the only few issues I have is with camera focus every once in a while and the little bit of stuttery animation which seems more like a governor/kernel issue than anything.
Phone is pretty awesome overall.

i sold my N4 for it as well; and also paid my ETF from ATT so i could move to tmobile.

I think it's pretty well done, the fact is the motion and smart camera tricks are always a little bit of a crap shoot, and they're so situational I can't really justify leaving them on to myself. So I just turn them all off, other than that I don't mind TouchWiz, it's very bright and cartoony, but I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily.
i do not think so
they will test it almost for long times, and someother funcition will be release to us in next OTA maybe, just as the apple doing.

Galaxy S 4 Stutter fix?

The phone stutters often and it is frustrating! I just switched from the Galaxy Note II to the Galaxy S 4 and simple task like switching between home screens and application screens stutter. Third party applications run perfectly smooth. Face unlock has massive stuttering and I used it on my past devices just fine. The only thing I can think of is that it is powering a 1080P display.
I've been looking around online and all I seen were complaints or people saying they do not experience it. People who have what are some fixes?

The simple fact that you downgrade from the tw camera to the aosp camera is enough for me. Plus the fact that when you record video the volume is way lower. There was also a call bug that sometimes you or the other person couldn't hear each other ( I'm not sure but I think it was fixed). Cm was great for me when I had the Motorola Triumph since the triumph sucked, but cm has always had issues on all my phones that I've owned. Honestly people say it's so much smoother but I don't see a difference from tw and cm.

The TW ROM uses around 900mb-1.1Gb probably due to the bloatware that was on it. A Google Edition phone for only $580 I am happy.

It's apparently Touch Wiz that makes the phone laggy.I'm expecting Samsung to make this less of an issue with updates since it is a new phone but I didn't want to wait.
I flashed the Infamous rom since I am not willing to give up the Samsung camera features. Then I use Nova launcher within it and it runs much faster.
Horrible touchwiz is what causes the lag, flashed GE ROM. BUTTER SMOOTH, I don't use the Samsung gimmicky features and the only camera mode I use is HDR that's included in the GE ROM
Super smooth, super stable, great battery life, more ram, win!!!

Bro if you flash Omega v7 from the "i9505" forums and right after you flash omega, flash ktoonz kernel for the TMOBILE s4, the phone runs BUTTER i mean BUTTER smooth.

I did that earlier, but my WiFi wouldn't turn on. Someone explained how to switch radios through oden, but that's a pain.

I installed the ktoonz kernel on my otherwise stock 4 and it is absolutely 100% smoother.
Stock S4 here with Nova Launcher, NO LAG, here my crappy video, LOL.

Beside the lag has the heat given any of you some trouble? I noticed the phone heats up quicker than any of my previous phones but it doesn't seem to cause any harm to performance.

I've had 2 M919 Galaxy S4's so far.
First one I returned because it was so incredibly laggy, everyone said theirs was butter smooth (all of whom were in denial), I thought I had a defective device. I tried all the custom roms using the Tmobile base and also international 9505 roms. Still did not fix the microstutters. Second one was laggy as hell also out of the box so I knew it was just the device. The latest international 9505 roms seem to make the phone smoother, but there are microstutters still present which should NOT BE THE CASE with a phone that's this powerful, but the biggest offender for me still is web browsing.
Open up the stock browser or chrome and go to theverge.com website, call up the full site and browse around. Pinch and zoom, then pan around. Tell me how incredibly slow it is to use. It seems like I'm using my original Motorola Droid all over again.
I'm sure by the time the Galaxy S5 comes around, Samsung "might" finally come out with a smooth working firmware for the S4, in the meantime I say ditch this device and get the HTC One. That baby is liquid smooth in EVERY operation and rips the S4 a new butt hole when it comes to web browsing smoothness and speed. Hell it even still supports full Adobe Flash even with 4.2.2.
The One is also pushing a 1080P screen so it's not the pixel count that is slowing the S4 down. It's something else. I had initially blamed the S4 lagging because of 4.2.2, reason is on my Note 2 running 4.1.2 it had next to zero lag and it's also running a heavy TW skin. I thought the HTC One was so smooth because it was still on 4.1.2. Well after updating to 4.2.2 on the HTC One, it even GOT SMOOTHER and FASTER.
I have also ran the google edition ROM's on both my S4 and my HTC One, and guess what?? The HTC ONE ran the pure GE ROM smoother than the S4 still!
The GE ROM still has slight microstutter on the S4 which is mind boggling. I noticed it a few times when opening the dialer and gmail app, the animation has a bit of microstuter in the animation when opening up. Something is definitely up with the S4 hardware wise.

I just opened up 20+ apps and didn't get not one micro stutter, running GE ROM. Also Im not in denial cause I hated the TW micro stutter when opening apps. My browser is BUTTER smooth, it rarely gives white spots and its 1 to 1 with my finger. I love it.
