WiFi Hotspot Hack discovered by T-Mobile - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I am starting this OP because this has become an issue across all custom ROMs at this point.
T-Mobile knows it is happening and their detection is actually impressively quick. They are very quick and have actually blocked my tethering within seconds of being warned.
I think it makes sense to have a forum where people can explain the situation instead of in the ROM thread where we all can state which ROM we are using, how we set up the hotspot, what device we used to connect to our phone and how fast we were detected by T-Mobile.

I am on Darthstalker v8 and wifi hotspot Hack is built in. I used it for a while with no issues and within the last day T-Mobile has really caught on. I have not changed my devices I used to connect. They are within seconds catching on and I am being directed to the upsell page. Any ideas what could possibly be triggering it in the ROMs?

If you don't change your user agent they will detect you quick. J haven't had any problems....using various ROMs either using safari browser or chrome with a android user agent

Ive been playing dota 2 and blacklight retribution for th last 3 days with no problem.

I'm not sure I don't use a Mac but if they got chrome for Mac I don't see why not

i use chrome but switch agent user to Firefox 3.5 and it works. i can play any game onlines via tmo tether and have not stopped my tethering phone yet.

Are you allowed to tether a connection to ps3 without T-Mobile knowing? When I tried I also got a warning..

Happens on Macs a lot easier for some reason. Go get chrome and get the user agent switcher. Change it to android and you're set.

Yea its here. Just install as a normal app and use the app for tether. Do not use the phones toggles or anything already on phone use the app.. Its here http://db.tt/BKG1Cigj
If it works for you let me know.. And no it requires nothing, at least for me and I have zero tethering plan just unlimited data and 500 mins.
I just turn on.. I don't use fall back or anything else. For me no user agent switch whatsoever..

Mine does the same thing too! It's like the internet times out. I usually put it in airplane mode then turn it back off to restart the internet and that usually fixes it. But it's like something turns it off it's weird.. I thought I was the only one with this problem. Even does it when phone is completely stock. I'll have a full signal and 4g displays but the arrows don't light up at all.
I get the same thing. It started when I started using the new sim

Its a problem with tmobiles network. When you initalize a data connection, it decides to randomly drop it. AT&T has done it before on HSPA+, but a simple refresh usually kicks it back into shape.
Thank god LTE doesn't do that.

Wifi Tether Fully Working COnfirmed!

NOTE: IF YOU STILL GETTING THE MSG ABOUT THE TMOBILE OFFER OF 14.99 THE SOLUTION IS:
SOLITION #1: IF YOU ARE USING GOOGLE CHROME AND STILL WANT TO USE GOOGLE CHROME AS YOUR DEFAULT BROWSER YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE USER AGENT. TO DO SO YOU OPEN GOOGLE CHROME CLICK ON MENU THEN TOOLS, THEN DEVELOPER TOOLS, THE A WINDOW ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE IS GOING TO PUP UP THEN CLICK ON SETTINGS (THERE IS A SETTING BUTTOM ON THE RIGHT BOTTOM) THEN YOU ARE GOING TO SEE 3 TABS: GENERAL -OVERRIDES-SHORTCUTS, CLICK ON OVERRIDES THEN YOU CLICK ON USER AGENT AND CHANGE THE USER AGENT TO ANYTHING THATS IT!
SOLUTION # 2 :GO TO WWW.APPLE.COM AND DOWNLOAD SAFARI BROWSER SIMPLE AND USE IT! THATS IT!!
ALSO IF YOU DONT LIKE SAFARI BROWSER YOU CAN ALWAYS DOWNLOAD FIREFOX BROWSER!!
1ST - ROOT YOUR PHONE!!!!!!!
2ND-DOWNLOAD THIS APK FROM THE MARKET OR FROM HERE http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ VERSION 3.1 BETA14
3RD-INSTALL IT ON YOUR PHONE
4TH- OPEN THE APP HIT MENU-SETTINGS- CHANGE DEVICE PROFILE AND SET YOUR PHONE TO SAMSUNG GALAXY NEXUS (CDMA/LTE). NOW GO BACK AND START TETHERING!!!! THATS IT SIMPLE WORKS GREAT AND FAST!! CONECTS ANY DEVICE FAST!!
NOTE:
NOTE:IF YOU GUYS UPDATED YOUR PHONE NOW PUT THE PROFILE TO SAMSUNG GALAXY NEXUS GSM INSTEAD OF THE CDMA/LTE !!!!
Works on mine too

That's interesting. I've been using Wi-Fi tether for over a year now, originally on my fascinate and most recently on my S3 without any problems. (My carrier is Verizon....my data usage is between 8-12gb a month.. .sometimes more) I think I'll just stick with that as opposed to the method posted in the OP.

Uhh not sure what you mean
Wifi tether is when your on a mobile data connection (4g/Edge) and you don't have Wifi...you turn it on and it acts as a router or hotspot and lets your laptop connect to it.
If your in an area with Wifi that you can connect to you don't need to use the app. The apps pretty much only for when your in a location w/o wifi.
Thanks man it works great, I was getting errors at first but after switching to the galaxy nexus gsm profile everything was all good

Tether on Jelly Bean

Ok So i'm running the New Jelly Bean Update and I am Rooted. I have noticed this is very buggy but it works. I don't know if other methods work this is the one i used. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this but if you download WiFi Hotspot / WiFi Tether from the market, i believe its INNODROAPPS, then open it and click Tether, then Click USB Tether. It will say invaild user name if you keep turning this one and off randomly eventually it will still be checked and you will have your 3g still. Sometimes i can do it in the first try something it takes like 50 but at least its a tether option for now. Unless someone knows a better way, would love to hear it.

Is anybody able to connect with Clockworkmod tether
I used clockwork tether before but it's been a while.
After the JB update I updated the Tether app (had to DL clock clockworkmod because gogle play says our carrier does not support).
I can connect and use clockworkmod tether as long as my phone has WiFi enabled. However, when I disable the WiFi and try to connect using sprints network, it does not connect and I see the PC driver (Linux) opening and closing the connection continuously.
It seems like Sprint has figure out how to stop this?
I'm in the Orange County Ca, area.
Anybody here able to use cwm tether on the sprint network?
BTW: EasyTether Still works and can still get it from google play but I guess that's because Sprint can detect this one...
Update: Nevermind, it's now seems to have started working. Don't know what was going on but I've never had any trouble with this app before.
Now, If I just figure out how to get my premium license back...

If you do a google search for clockworkmod tether on the web (computer) you will get the google play page amoung the items.
Go to the Google Play page then scroll down a little to the description and click MORE.
In the full description there are links to download the app from clockwork and the drivers for Windoz, Linux and Mac.
I don't know about OSX but for linux, you will need a compiler on the system.

It is not just modding an app. There are dozens of network and registration checks scattered throughout framework.jar and framework2.jar and they are very well hidden. This is the same reason the guy on the Droid forums never got the Verizon NFL app broken the second year...too many reg checks throughout the ROMs. Either keep an ICS nandroid backup or a CM10 backup for when you need to tether.

sorry, no. I gather you want to know either way.
I used NOTEorious for 3-4 days, absolutely 0 issues connecting to WiFi at home. I'm using a Ubiquiti Power AP N

Albeit it's only been a week since I've had this phone. My current ROM is also working fine. I've been using Perseus kernel since I got it. I have not used any other kernels, including stock. I used Perseus or Siyah on my S3, so I continue to use the kernel I preferred on my last phone...
Well its just that when I turn off and on my WiFi then it gets stuck at obtaining IP address and then doesn't automatically connect like it typically should

Does it happen on other routers/access points too? Or just at home? Sorry for the delayed response.

At least it's consistent.. Hmm, what kernel(s) have you been using?
if you're doing full wipes and what not it'd be odd if just the dhcp daemon of the system was corrupt across multiple roms.....but i could be wrong, i'm no expert lol
im using the PK29 kernel

Apparently there are issues with 29, as he updated the WiFi driver. He reverted the driver update on 29.1. If you are still on 29 I'd recommend updating. Hmm...

Static ip won't help, yes you can connect to wifi, but cannot get connection to internet. This is a bug of android, and ITs in Princeton univ. had some investigation. 4.2 should have fixed it

Mine must have been a different issue. When I went to static ip I was able to get to the internet very quickly.

Looks like a good place to ask....where the hell is wifi scan interval set at on Note 2?? I looked in my build.prop where it normally is but didn't see it. Its usually set low (around 20) by stock and I always up that to 150-180 so I am not constantly scanning for other Wi-Fi when I am at home or locked on a good network.

A WiFi direct app that works on nexus 4?

Google keeps insisting on working with bluetooh for NFC transfers , I don't know why , this is useless, the transfers take so much time for pictures and for videos is impossible , I downloaded both WiFi shoot and WiFi direct from Google play and tried transpeoplefering photos to my galaxy nexus and it never worked , have any of you succeed ?

stick it in the Q&A mate
Have a look at Fast File Transfer, send files to my N7 no problems.

Actually, the app uses wifi tethering, but for sending files. The speeds are comparable to those of WiFi Direct. Moreover, I'm adding NFC pairing in the next update, so this will be quite exactly what you are looking for.
Try Zapya
Really nice app
All of my friends are using it with no problem

Fast file is good but its too lengthy procedure. There should have been something like qr code for easy detection

There is a qr code, once you have selected the file to send and the Fast File Transfer app has opened on the host device touch the icon in middle of screen, et voila....

Although granted it could be part of the rom I'm using. But anything AOSP based should have this.

Yes that's stock android , but the fact that ota there doesn't mean that android uses it , for sending photos and videos android uses NFC+bluetooh

Hey guys, don't you know that the Google NEXUS devices do not work with Wifi direct? It's totally impossible, so close this thread!

Think you got the wrong app lol.. works via SMS
Check this thread out for a solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36344250
It's an app much like Sammy's S-Beam, which accomplishes exactly what you seem to be looking for.
