So after upgrading my stock GNex to 4.2 I found that the performance was lacking, it felt choppy and slow at times, I though these issues would be fixed by a different ROM/Kernel and although it got a bit better I still don't have the amazing performance on my phone that 4.1 gave me.
I have decided to go back to 4.1.2 but I do like some of the features that 4.2 provided me and I want to ask you guys if there is a way (also it would be great if you could direct me to it if there is) to have these features on 4.1.2, the ones I'm more interested in are the following:
Photo Sphere camera
Gesture Typing
Quick Settings Menu
The first two especially.
Also any advise of a 4.1.2 ROM I should try? I was thinking in going stock but if you guys know of a great performance/battery life ROM/Kernel out there I would appreciate suggestions. I started getting into ROMs/Kernels, etc, until 4.2 hit so I don't know much about 4.1 ROMs.
Thanks.

I think other than the quick settings mod, rest you can get in 4.1.2 as well. Look over the forums, try a bit tweaking, you might come up with it. the Photosphere camera just has a few additional libraries and a changed Gallery app. I can't recall, but i think i saw a flashable zip for that.
as far as Gesture is concerned, yu'll have to change a keyboard. Look for "swift key".
Try BlackBean AOKP for 4.1.2. It was awesome, but before that, I would suggest yu give a try to Liquid Smooth 4.2.1. yu might change yur mind.

I see a lot of 4.1.x ROMs, just wondering if any 4.2 are coming soon. Having trouble finding info.
Thats cause there is no info on Sammy 4.2 roms. Closest you'll get is a cm10.1 build, which is available for certain devices.

I was afraid of that answer... I'm just kind of torn between ROM choices... it seems like all the ROMs available are 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 with the 4.2 Gmail and Keyboard ported, which is okay but really isn't that huge of a reason to upgrade... I've looked at MyRom and a few others listed here but I see no HUGE advantage to flash. I'm rooted and ready to go, too. When I had my Vibrant, I went from 2.3.4 (I think) up to 4.0. Huge reason to upgrade. Here, not so much, yet as far as I know... Maybe someone could shed some light? I know I have a choice using the Jedi ROMs, Multi Window or WiFi Calling - of which I'd use Multi Window most likely... but not sure if that's enough of a real reason to get me to flash. I don't want my volume f'ed with (no Beats or DSP), so ... that's my dilemma.

I personally get better battery life on the 4.1.2 stock rom. And i like multi window. I would suggest a stock rom and then you choose which mods or whatever you like
I'm really enjoying cm10 on my nexus, and have for months. I feel very little compulsion to upgrade to a 4.2.1 rom, but at the same time...I'm and android user! Flashing roms is what we do!
Are there any features that I'm really missing out on in 4.2.1 that you have grown to love?
Most of the 4.2 apps like camera which has photosphere can be installed on 4.1 so things like that, you dont need to update for. The few things you would get from updating are the lock screen widgets and quick settings. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe some performance increases and other stuff under the hood. I'm on CM 10.1 and loving it though.

Oh yeah, should have clarified that I'm already running the 4.2 app transformation pack, so I'm using the 4.2 apps. Otherwise that would be a great reason to upgrade.
Pretty much just the pulldown toggles. While I do run pmg and some mods I enjoy stock and the pulldown means that 4.2 is the first time I've been able to run basic stock and not feel like I was missing something.
The keyboard is my favorite feature, but that can be installed w/o the update. The quick settings are okay, but meh. CM's G+ page says 10.1 "M Series" is coming soon.
No real to die for features IMO. I am on 10.1 only for Faux kernel tbh... if he still supported 10 I'd have stuck with it.
Everything you get in 10.1 is there in CM10 with the exception of the poorly implemented lock screen widgets that I've disabled anyway.
Nope. Nothing killer. But it's new, and thus we flash it.
Not really features but I get much better battery life and for the most part 4.1.2 ROMs and kernels are no longer being updated
No to die for features. And 4.2 is a lot less stable right now than 4.1 with all the SoDs and stuff. I say stick with the transformation pack and wait for another update from Google
Hey guys Ive been thinking lately of trying the new ota but I have a few questions/concerns.
Im on bugless beast 4.1.2 and couldn't be happier. Never an f/c, no stuttering, perfect stable setup. Will I find the same on a stock-like 4.2.2 rom? I tried some 4.2.1 roms but always walked away disastified (jittery crt animation, buggy, laggy). Any bugs on 4.2.2? Hows the speed over 4.1.2? I dont really care about the new toggles and lockscreen but if the speed is better and is stable id be interested.
Thanks!
No major changes. Believe me. Just update to be up to date. No other visible reasons.
All new versions run slower than previous. Custom kernels - we all know are just a placebo. Except kernel configuration possibility (for instance to slow down the phone to save the battery (which I doubt makes any sense) or turn on the fast charge).
So your phone won't be faster and your battery won't run longer.
If you want a decent standby and screen time (the default is - 12-16h and 2h screen time MAX!):
1. Disable Wifi
2. Disable Data
3. Switch to 2G
Everything else - waste of time
So 4.2.2 is slower than 4.1.2?

I've heard people say that it's smoother on their devices, but... the most reliable way to know would be to backup and flash it yourself. It seems that everyone's device is different, and everyone's choice of running apps is different as well. So only you would likely know if it is faster for you or not.

I was on 4.1.2 since December because 4.2.1 was junk.
4.2.2 runs great, they polished the quirks out and I don't feel the need to switch back. Google stock image, stock kernel.

Ah thats what I wanna hear
I have been running CM7 for a while and I am fairly happy with it. I seem to like the basic function over what I have see on other people's phones with either ICS or JB. So I want to ask what advantages or better functions would make me want to upgrade? Maybe better device support? I do notice that my wifi drops off a lot but I also have friend's with the SIII stock and they have the same issue.

ICS
>BETTER APP SUPPORT
>Face unlock
>Easier Folder management
>Better widget/app drawer
>Pinch-to-zoom functionality in the calendar
>Integrated screenshot capture
>Better voice integration and continuous, real-time speech to text dictation
>Better Contacts app
>Chrome syncing
>Built-in photo editor
>ANDROID BEAM!
>others....plus these are stock features. A custom rom will further improve things.
JB
>EVEN BETTER APP SUPPORT!!!
>BUTTERY SMOOTHNESS
>GOOGLE Now
>Expandable notifications
>Photosphere
>Gesture keyboard
>Lock screen widgets
These are just the main bullet points IMO there is no reason to stick with an old outdated OS. I used CM7 until ICS came out officially for our device. CM7 is based off GB which first came out in 2010! If you're wary of custom roms at least update officially and enjoy the most of android.
If your into flashing roms there are many stable ones running Google Now on ICS 4.0.4 if you are just looking for updated google apps. JB isn't officially out for out phones yet so the devs have done a good job of porting roms so we can use JB if you want to. I would check the threads on JB roms and decide which is best for you.
Thanks for help
Thanks for the insight. I am still on the fence but it is not like I can't revert after playing a bit, isn't that was a nand backup is for?

yeah. just make a backup and play around. If you are on cm7 i recommend upgrading to cm10.1, it only gets better.
Hey all. I have a ICS (4.04) Galaxy S 3 for ATT. Its been working for me great, but since i removed the bloatware like gallery and s-memo things like the copy/cut/paste and the little icon that takes to to your gallery in the camera app functions wont work.
What GSIII roms would you recommend? A couple things i would like is if the battery life is the same or better than stock roms and the home screens had a landscape mode as well as portrait. (And hopefully they work in nova launcher as well).
When i had my GS1 i used the AOKP rom and i loved that. It just didn't have the homescreen portrait/landscape thing. Thanks for your help!
Edit: Also, is ICS>JB or are there pros and cons on both sides?
Different people, different preferences.
therefore, look, read, and test them out yourself.

If you like aosp then flash task's 650 rom. Pacman and rootbox are pretty good too. I would update to stock jb before you do anything. You will find it much better than ics.

I have to agree that JB is better than ICS just seems smoother and more polished to me. As far as the roms go i am useing the official CM 10.1 and love it. But you reall need to look and test a couple of the diffrent ones to find what suits you best.
These threads won't last long.
Recommended way:
1. Read OP for ROM features.
2. Check for ROM threads on top n see atleast a few latest pages for any issues or thanks. These are best indicators of how satisfied people are.
3. I'm on JB and this is quite stable. So I can say there are some very good JB ROMs out there.
