It is impossible to root a device without using some sort of external device to root it with.
If you were looking for an app on the Market, it would be impossible as you need probably would need root access to root.

unrEVOked have a application that's supposed to give you ROOT - I tried it on a friends Hero without any success.
Either way: www.unrEVOked.com is such a breeze.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an HTC Desire VC section on xda, so you will have to try here.
We were all beginners before. Only root your phone if you:
