should be no prob with superoneclick. Try it! I've never bricked a phone with it, superoneclick will just error or hang as a general rule if it cant do it. Oh yeah I take no reponsiblity...blah blah blah. (Btw, its how I did my 5660m, and my wife's, and my kids' - 5 rooted phones in total). I now happily run ICS on it and am about to JB it . Let me know how you make out

Which tutorial did you used?

Oh gawd, its been a while. Here, do this. Download the most current superoneclick from shortfuse. Enable usb debugging on your phone. Make sure latest samsung drivers are on your pc (they can be found on this site). Plug in phone and start superoneclick. Click on "root" and you should be good to go. Watch the log on the right hand side, it'll give you a realtime update as to what's going on. That's best as I can remember, I'll try to find you an appropriate tutorial, but try that for now. Don't forget, if it works for you and you're satisfied, maybe hit the in program donate button for shortfuse.

multiple one clicks
Personally i find the best rooter is not this one click which has never worked for me but http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808103 is much better. Simply download. Install corresponding drivers on page. Turn on debugging mode on phone and plug in. The go to device manager and under universial serial bus controllers make sure there is something that says something like samsung component or something like that. Finally run the program and follow in program instructions. I believe at this point u only want rfs but if you want a working one for ext4 please post.
hope that helps
irule9000
If irule's solution didnt work, first make sure the samsung usb drivers are already installed then try going to C:\Program Files\Samsung\USB Drivers\16_Shrewsberry
Then open up ssadadb, then press view signature, then view certificate, then press install certificate..
One you installed that go back to the one click root program and right click that program and select open as administrator..
Should fix all problems on the connection between the phone and pc
Did u already have adb debugging up?
Did u already have adb set up? you need that to get it to work. By they way try hitting enter not spaace
Sorry I dnt knw wat adb is can u explain more detail I'm not computer savy to boot

Have you thought about paying someone to work on your grammar and punctuation? In two posts, you have approximately ten thoughts and no separation between them.
And how did you "brick & unbrick" your phone? If it was bricked, then there is no unbricking it. You may have done something to screw it up, but if it was able to boot to anything, then it wasn't bricked.
But seriously, if you aren't computer savvy, then you're on the wrong forum. This is supposed to be a site for developers. Do a little "reserch" into adb (which is in the one-click) and the run.bat that is in the one-click. Run.bat is mostly adb commands that you can enter manually.
Did you make sure to extract the files? Cuz it extracts and sows almost identical but the folder is no longer zipped.... that can stop it from working. It might say something about rageagainstthecage not being extracted

Epic 4G !
If you havnt gotten this to work yet try this.
Download the one click again and/or right click the zip file and extract to *** folder
Open that folder (for me it was OneClickRootCWM3)
BEFORE you connect your usb make sure you have the proper driver installed (search it in forum) and go menu, settings, applications, development, check usb debugging, THEN plug usb
Once you have the driver installed successfully pop up (might need to plug and unplug a few times) right click and run as admin the file titled run NOT run.sh. run will be a windows batch file if you look in type tab in windows explorer.
Follow on screen instructions
Still no good? Try a few more times sometimes it wont work on the first go. Still no good? Reboot and keep tapping F8 (the key that says F8 on it above numbers not F key and 8 key at same time) BEFORE you see the windows logo you should get a menu that asks some questions you want to disable user account control (UAC) you will boot up like normal uninstall driver (control panel, programs, programs and features, right click samsung usb driver for mobile phones and uninstall) reinstall driver by right click run as admin and try one click root again remember to run as admin. Still no good? Do any and all windows updates and try again. Still no good? Download odin (search forum) extract it and run odin put phone in download mode ( from power off open keyboard hold 1 and power ) when you get the yellow menu on phone plug usb look at odin window you should see connected to com whatever not important if not connected unplug and plug usb again if still not connected there is a problem with your usb cable/port on pc/port on phone/driver try another cable/port on pc. Still no good? Bring it my house and Ill hook you up if you are in my area (Richmond, VA)
Ill tell you what fury15! sence u knw so much, tell that to the guy that told me I couldn't build a 10 sec. Junkyard- sb- racecar but I did with only reserch on my part...
lolo Ent. Out holla.

I have a epic. First time rooting. I've downloaded the drivers and I'm using the oneclick root. I have my phone is usb debbuging. I either get a error that my phone is not connected or ragethecage.exe is missing . Also is there any way i can pay to root my phone like can someone send me something all ready to go.. plz help.
Thanks in advance
Antivirus
your antivirus thinks rage is a virus disable all anti virus programs and disconnect from the net.
it is deleting rage when you download it
also which antivirus are you running?
This should be in Q & A. Rageagainstthecage is the exploit used to root your Epic. your anti-virus on your PC may have deleted it.
You need to re boot phone & pc after installing drivers. Don't worry you can keep trying to root with no ill effects. Also make sure you post questions in q&a section not dev section. This is a do it yourself community maybe try craigs list for someone wanting to root your phone.

if you join the irc channel (there is a thread in the general section with the info/link) we have people there almost all the time willing to help out
Are you still using the stock USB cable? If so pitch it and try a better cable. That solved a lot of my flashing issues.

[GUIDE] Rooting Sprint Intercept froyo 2.2 [06-02-11]

I've successfully permanently rooted my Sprint Intercept with the latest 2.2 froyo on it without installing custom kernels and wanted to share steps I took since there is some confusion and differences.
Original guide link.
Things you'll need:
Root files.
Samsung drivers.
Windows 7/vista/xp 32 bit.
Steps:
Install Samsung drivers
Reboot your PC
Reboot your phone, connect it to your PC with a usb cable
Put your phone in debugging mode (menu->settings->applications->development)
Extract root files to your c:\intercept-root folder (or any folder you wish)
Start windows command line (start->run->CMD)
Change to your "intercept-root" folder
Execute START_ROOT command
Follow instructions
Once done, don't forget to install Superuser apk.
after you rooted it you were able to put a different rom on it right. trying to clear out the garbage that comes on it.

No, this is just simply to root and remove stuff you don't want. I suggest Titanium backup. There is no proper recovery for the intercept that I know of. The one existing can be flashed and it does work but has some issues with what it backs up and what it restores. It's not complete and may create problems.
If you are rooting the latest 2.2 froyo, after removing all sprint apps you are left with true bare stock so there is really no need for anything else. Make sure you don't remove the sprint vm even if you are using google voice. It needs to be on because of system integration.
you mae one error. the drivers can't be installed on windows 7. I have gotten the drivers from the moment to work once but now its nothing. my computer no longer recognizes the phone when i plug it into the computer. which means that i cant root it or anything. sucks and i need serious help.
hmmm, same problem
Find a friend with a XP laptop and use that?
Glad to know - i have failed at rooting my intercept a few times and have been using my windows 7 box. Trying these instructions from a laptop - will report back!
Success
Using nothing but a old crappy dell laptop runing windows XP I was able to gain perma root using the instructions provided here. On my first run of the script the process failed, I simply did what the program told me to (run the script again) and it worked like a charm.
OP - thank you so very much for taking the time to post.
Question for anyone: now that I have root, I *really* want to be able to use my Intercept as a wi-fi hotspot. Can I do this? Where do I start?
No errors. I got drivers under Windows 7 working but I clearly said it has to be 32 bit as 64 does not work. Check your version.

Download wireless tether app. I've had troubles with it in the past so if that one doesn't work try Barnacle.
how to flash cmo1 custom recovery after phone is rooted?
Just throw intercept root on sdcard and run
All I had to do it throw the root on the sdcard. Run it from the file manager, and then download barnacle. Sweet! Done!

I don't believe there is a supported recovery for the intercept. There is one hacked up but there are some issues with it so I don't recommend it.

ReRoot:Failing bad after Ruu to 3.70

Hello All after searching and following directions of multiple threads including this one http://vaelek.com/index.php?/topic/1666-guide-how-to-un-root-re-root-your-evo-4g/ Unrevoked3 method and this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8223391&postcount=1 Auto root method, Im completely stumped and lost on what to do next. Im a half a noob.
After having some flashing issues with any non aosp Gb roms, I was forced to do Unroot rerrot method in hopes that would fix it.
So I Ruu'd to this setup:
hardware 0003
2.15.00.11.19
3.70.651.1
pri 1.90_003
prl 60679
and was able to get back to stock 2.2 and s-on
So then trying to root again, ran into issues.
Unrevoked method:
Installed usb drivers & htc syn(then uninstall)
Debugging on
Phone charge mode
and when i get to step to run Unrevoked, I get to the familiar waiting for device.
Does this everytime
Note that might be important: Step Where i go into Device Manger, I never have "Other Devices" listed-Android 1.0 like its says it should. However, Im still able to install/update drivers under"Disk Drives" Htc Android Phone Usb Device
One Click AutoRoot method:
Followed steps as it says and when i get to right click on Autoroot.bat & run administrator Step, Black box pops up, Runs through its thing it says it doesnt recognize advice. Tried over and over same thing.
btw im on Windows Vista 64 bit
Heard that trying a previous version of unrevoked3(3.2) could solve this issue but had problems finding anything other than updated version. v also tried switching usb cables and other little things you would not think it would be but im desperate.
i dont know what else to do. Ive been searching google all day. Please please help me.
Do you have usb debugging enabled from your phone?

Could there be a chance the reason is I'm on a 64 bit system?

Ruu'd back to 2.2, my current set up is in op. And yes installed drivers, followed exact directions of the both Unrevoked method and autoroot method exactly as the directions say. Neither method is recognizing my device. See op.

First and foremost, you need to turn usb debugging back on.
Sorry that was a typo, i always have it on when its suppose to be, sorry.

After you installed the drivers, you see android bootloader interface once the phone is plugged in? Also, reboot your phone and pc, then try unrevoked again.
Yes I see that but I dont see Android 1.0 under other devices in device manager. Thought this could be part of the issue as well. Your suppose to see that after installing drivers and plunging in phone.
As a last resort I'm trying a different pc as we speak. If you have a step by step directions maybe something that is easy to follow that would be great. Starting the downloads now on the new pc.

This is my guide to rooting...so far flawless victory for those that have used it.
Rooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p...driver_install ; Download the hboot drivers needed for rooting. The instructions are also there of how to install them, straight forward.
2. Download unrevoked3 > http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ ; It will show up as reflash_package on your desktop; leave it alone for now
3. On your phone from a home screen: menu > settings > applications > development and make sure usb debugging is checked; needed so that unrevoked can find the phone; never turn this off
4. http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/ ; Download htc sync and install it. After that, uninstall the program from your computer ; you only need the drivers from it.
5. On your phone, connect the to the pc in CHARGE ONLY, do not mount as a disk, ect, has to be charge only
6. On the desktop, run unrevoked [reflash_package], accept the disclaimer, blah blah
7. Just sit your phone down and let it do its thing. It'll take about 5 minutes, and the phone will reboot twice. Once its done, it'll say done. You can open your app drawer and you'll see an app that says superuser, and then you're done.
IF unrevoked tells you 'is your firmware too new?' boot into the bootloader [while turning the phone on, hold vol+down till you see a white screen with androids skateboarding.] Use the volume keys to navigate after the scan completes to clear storage [a factory reset, data will be lost] and then use the power button to select it, then repeat step #6.
To tether, you can flash a custom rom of your choosing after you've browsed, and then use the built in hot spot, or download wireless tether from the market, more later after you root.
Unrooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ; Scroll down to the FAQs, then download the unrevoked s-on zip. This places the security back on your phone, because rooting makes it s-off, and if s-on, quickest way to tell your phone was rooted.
2. Flash that file from recovery, then boot back into the bootloader [vol+down while turning phone on] and verify until its s-on.
3. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip ; rename that file to PC36IMG, place on the root of your sdcard [not in a folder] then flash it in the bootloader. When the scan that normally does nothing, it'll detect that file. Apply the update then reboot. That's a stock 3.70 firmware file, it'll take you back to stock, unrooted, s-on.
Ok will try it and let you know thank you so much

Stuck in boot loop with no USB option

I just inherited a t-mobile phone that was rooted. I installed the latest version of TWRP and tried to re-root it but now it's in a boot loop and on top of that I can't connect the phone to a computer b/c I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message. I've re-installed the drivers and I've tried the toothpick trick. Nothing is working. What are my options?

First, I believe this is the correct section - the phone I am working with is a T-Mobile Galaxy S II... Second, I can't Odin because I don't have a working usb connection. I've tried several different ROMS from this fine section and I get the same result... Boot Loop
If you flashed TWRP 2.6.3, that's your problem.
Flash 2.6.1
This is the wrong section because it has nothing to do with ROM development.
With that being said if you can still boot into twrp you still have hope. Try loading a different ROM into an SD card using a converter and slide back in the phone to properly wipe first then re flash.
I don't understand why you can't get a proper USB connection going but above suggestion may solve it.

You could always get a SD card reader, connect t to ur PC, DL a flashable twrp 2.6.1.0 and flash the recovery, then flash a ROM an u should be back in action, but above mentioned is right this is the wrong forum u need q&a

Just to confirm a few things: where do you not have the working USB connection? in download mode? If so, I'd try reinstalling the drivers.
Also, I see in your sig that you state your phones are:
Asus Nexus 7
Sprint Galaxy Note 2
Neither of which is a SGH-T989. Are you sure you are flashing the correct ROM/Kernel for your device?
also you said it came rooted but you re-rooted it. What process did you use to re-root it?
One last thing: you say you got it second hand, are you sure it is a T-Mobile galaxy S 2? May want to check under the battery for a "T989" or "i9100". The i9100 is NOT a T-Mobile galaxy S 2. It should be SGH-T989 if they didn't give you incorect info about the phone.
You could also try a different USB cable or hub. I've had USB extension cables give me grief and the front ports on my PC don't like my phone.

Thanks for your help. Here are the answers to your questions:
I think there is something wrong with the micro USB input on the phone. I have reinstalled the drivers several times. I have tried different cables and different computers. I even tried the toothpick trick. No luck.
I do have a GN2. The SG2 is for my daughter...
It is a genuine SGH-T989 I checked under the battery.

Where do I find and how do I put a flashable twrp 2.6.1.0 on my micro sd card? I've always used goomanager in the past but obviously that won't work in this case...

Everything I've found requires a computer connection. I need to be able to flash it back from v2.6.3.1 using TWRP to do it. Is that possible?

One more piece of information that might be helpful... When I try to wipe the cache I get this message "Formatting Data using make_ext4fs function" and it stays stuck there. I've left it for over 30 minutes and it doesn't ever move from that screen. Hope that helps... I really need some help here.

If u go to the dev section on this phone and look around a bit, u will find the twrp thread, in that thread is a flashabke copy of 2.6.1.0, if u can't find it pm me, I have a copy, all u would need to do is put the zip file on any micro SD card then put it in the phone and flash it with the twrp u have now, it will revert it back to 2.6.1.0 and that should fix ur prob, but like I said of u can't find it pm me and I'll shoot u a copy

Let it sit on the TeamWin screen for a minute or so... I find it sometimes takes a little bit.
If it doesn't ever get past there, try hooking it up to a PC and see if you can get ADB to load (presuming you have ADB installed and ADB drivers installed). If you can, try to do an "adb pull /proc/last_kmsg" and a "adb logcat > logcat.txt" and zip those up and toss them on here.
If you CAN'T get into adb, I would try hooking the phone up to Kies and see if it will do anything for you.
Or you could try following this guide as you have the T-Mobile SGH-T989 (not the Telus SGH-T989D):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359
BUT make sure to grab the correct stock image file for whatever version your android currently is (ie if you are on Android 2.3.6, then make sure to get the T-mobile KL1 2.3.6 stock image).
Also, what ROM did you flash? was it a 4.3 ROM? If so, did you update your radio before you flashed the ROM? I think 4.1+ needs the updated radio to function properly.
I know you said you can't connect through ODIN, but I'm hoping it is because of some odd driver or odd ODIN version. That thread has the stuff to make it all work I believe.
I'm really hoping you can get ADB to work. If you can pull a logcat of your bootup process, it will be much easier to figure out what went wrong.

You guys are great!!! I really appreciate all the help. No matter what I do, ADB, Kies, different cables, different computers, nothing gets past the "USB Device Not Recognized" pop up. I let it sit for 15 minutes, twice. Still no love... I loaded TWRP_2.6.1.0_Hercules and then reboot and that's when it got stuck. Prior to that I had loaded TMobileT989UVMC6RootedDeodexed Rom. I forget where I got it. I'm pretty sure it was a 4.1.2 based rom.

weird... I am not sure why it is being so fussy with your phone.
Hopefully somebody has a better suggestion than I do, but my next thought is to try ebay-ing the phone in hopes that somebody gives you a few bucks for it. It sounds to me like the internal memory module is dying and the USB port is shot.
Is your water damage sticker pink/red or missing? It should be under the battery.
I hate thinking that the phone is just dead, but without being able to connect it to the PC in either recovery or download mode and not being able to boot into a ROM or recovery, I think the next step is to scrap it and hope somebody can send you a few bucks... or if you have experience soldering, maybe try replacing the USB connector?
I could be wrong mind you... The only time I had issues like that it was due to a badly flashed recovery and I needed to use ODIN to get back up and running. As a thought, do you have a Windows XP 32-bit computer you could try plugging the phone into? And while the phone is plugged in, can you check device manager for all devices? maybe try installing the drivers manually? I suggest windows XP 32bit because that is what I use the majority of the time with my phone. I've also used Windows 7 64-bit and it worked.

Thanks again for your time and suggestions... I've always been very impressed with the xda community. I actually got this phone, used, from Swappa. And I am in the process of returning it for a refund. But the seller is being difficult and is trying to stick me with the phone. I was just trying to salvage it on my own, just in case... Thanks again.

that sucks. I've heard good things about Swappa, but living in Canada I can't use it. My opinion it sounds like you got a dud and based on how hard the guy is fighting to not give you a refund, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew it was doa and just fluked out and get it running before he sold it. Or maybe it got water damaged and he knew it would fail soon so he sold it before it completely quit.
I hope you get it all sorted out.
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
