Hey everyone
My htc one x is asking me for an update, and I'm wondering if I can update it and still keep the Root?
Bcuz I've tried to update it, and it gave me a notice that something went wrong while trying to install the update.
* I've a rooted phone.
From what I've seen on youtube it won't
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
Root should not interfere the update, is your rom 100% stock (no bloatware or apps removed?)
If you are on a custom recovery, you have to flash back the stock recovery. The update will not run on a custom recovery !

Ahaa.
Yea but how can I put on the stock recovery?!
fastboot getvar version-main
Take the first bit, like 2.17 and search for the recovery here, then
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You have to flash it with fastboot command.
What is your software number ? Is it 2.17 android 4.0.4 ?
If yes then download this file
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
Rename it to recovery.img and copy it in the fastboot folder on the pc
Then put the phone in fastboot usb mode and open a command prompt inside the fastboot folder on the pc and type
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot erase cache
After this you boot back into the O.S. and update again

What he means is, that you have to have tools first. But you don't need whole Android SDK. Download this and extract it in Documents folder for example. (there shouldn't be spaces in path to the folder, afaik)
http://d-h.st/iqA
Then run command line in folder "Win32" (shift+right click on blank space in folder > Open command window here). Then you can run the provided commands

Hold volumedown and power to get to bootloader and select fasboot using hw buttons.

Just wondering for later, do I understand correctly then that if I have removed some bloatware, even if I return to stock recovery I will not be able to recieve OTAs?
Tangentially - any recommendations on the best way to know if particular bloatware apps are safe/unsafe to remove (how deeply are these apps built into the ROM?)
Yes need original recovery for install update
HTC ONE X Using TapaTalk
The minute you reflashed the custom recovery you make a NANDROID BACKUP ! After that you can do what you want. When the phone needs to be updated you restore the nandroid backup and the stock recovery and you will be able to update the official way
And yes you are right, if you remove any bloatware or system apps the phone will not update !

Put the phone in the bootloader and give these commands
Fastboot oem readcid

To do the OTA you need to flash the official recovery do the ota and then reflash twrp. No need to lock the bootloader.

ok i thought i would give you a quick rundown of what im doing
1 - i unlocked the bootloader and flashed using the tools on here
2 - i received the software update via OTA
3 - however because i have unlocked and flashed it just loads the recovery option
so basically i want to remove the unlock and flash as per step 1 above
thanks
You don't need to relock the bootloader to be able to update, what you need is stock rom (the way it came out of the box) root is no problem but if you removed bloatware the update will fail. You also need the stock recovery and the stock kernel.

Hello all,
Just before anyone says, I have looked for a few hours for the answer to this question, but all of the answers are either ambiguous or too complicated for a novice like me to understand .
The question I have is how do you upgrade the hboot of a rooted international HTC One X (step by step). I really want to flash CM 10.1 custom ROM, and it requires a newer hboot than the one I have. I have found a tool called JBFWFlasher, which can upgrade an hboot, but it says when you go through the steps: AFTER UPGRADE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL A FULLY FUNCTIONAL NON-SENSE BASED ROM.
Obviously CM 10.1 is non-sense based, so I think this is a dead end.
Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance .
Details:
Hboot: 1.12.0000
Clockworkmod: v5.8.4.0
Cyanogenmod: 10
Get your CID
CID getter from the playstore will do, for the easy/lazy people or do the fastboot command
Fastboot oem readcid
Once you have ypur cid you go here and get your matching firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957376
And then you do this :
Rename the .zip to firmware.zip and place it in the fastboot folder
- Boot the phone to the bootloader and relock the bootloader :
Fastboot oem lock
- then put the phone in ruu mode with this command
Fastboot oem rebootRUU
(watch the capitals, this command will put the phone into a black screen with a silver HTC logo)
- then flash the firmware
Fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
- you see the text on the pc screen, when it says OKE you are good. If it failed you reflash the zip right away again.
Then reboot the bootloader, unlock it, flash the custom recovery, make a full wipe and install the new JB of ypur choice and don't forget to flash its boot.img too
Thanks, you couldn't have made that explanation simpler . So, because I am an idiot and I somehow have no fastboot folder, what are all the components I need for it?
At the moment I have:
The latest CM 10.1 zip folder
^^^ The boot.img copied from this folder
The latest gapps zip folder for CM 10.1 & Android 4.2.2
The CID when I get it
Anything else? Thanks for the help .
You need the ANDROID SDK BUNDLE ..... Unpack it and inside the platform tools you find the fastboot files. That is your fastboot folder.
Or use a JB firmware flasher.
Also, one other thing, when I just went and got the zip from the link you posted, the download was off of Android Revolution HD. Just thought that I'd check, this won't mean I can only use this ROM will it? CM 10.1 will work fine?
Not trying to be awkward, I just don't want to get this wrong .
First you need your cid otherwise you don't know what you need to download !

I have it downloading now . When I have the fastboot folder and the other parts I mentioned, is that all I need to be able to change the hboot, re-unlock bootloader, re flash CWM (oh yeah I need that as well :silly and install CM 10.1.
Thanks for the help so far, I really appreciate it .

Yeah, I did the CID and found it was HTC__001, I then went on to download that zip for hboot 1.39 and that is when the android revolution page popped up. Just thought I should check with the guru first .
Oke yes that's correct .....
Yep then you have it all. Also put the unlock code.bin file (the one you got in the mail from htc the first time you unlocked the bootloader) into the fastboot folder.
Follow all the steps i wrote earlier and it will be fine
How to flash ?
Open a command window from inside the fastboot folder . Hold shift and point in the folder then right click the mouse and select : open command window here
From that dos command window you type all the FASTBOOT commands.

Also, the ADT Bundle just finished downloading, and I'm extracting fastboot to C: drive at the moment. Thanks for the help, is that all I need to do? (seems too easy...)
After the update you can install any rom here you like.
Yeah unpack the bundle to a folder where you can find it .... then follow the steps !
Knew I'd spoken too soon. In program-tools, fastboot is an application, not a folder, and when I click it it does nothing. Is there any stock fastboot folder I can get from anywhere?
Common mistake ! You need to open the command window inside that folder with the fastboot.exe file !
Like i mentioned about 2-3 posts back.
Don't double click the fastboot.exe file it does indeed do nothing !

I should probably stop bugging you now, its midnight lol
Yeah this is my last reply and then im off to bed ! Its 1 o clock here now
The cm10.1 and the Gapps go onto the sdcard of the phone
In the fastboot folder you need :
- firmware.zip
- unlock code.bin
- boot.img from the cm10.1
- custom recovery.img
And then you start......if you are uncomfortable with all this we can also do this all with teamviewer tomorrow evening ? If you like !

like mr hofs said if you install a custom rom it's pre-rooted...
First you need to flash a rom. A rom is rooted not the phone. Those are 2 different things.
First do all of this :
Download the rom of your choice and copy it to the phone sdcard. Cwm recovery - mounts & storage - mount usb device then copy it. Open the rom.zip and copy the boot.img file to the fastboot folder on the pc.
Now boot into the bootloader and flash the boot.img with these commands
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot erase cache
Now enter the recovery (CWM 5.8.4.0 minimal) and perform a full wipe
Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced - wipe dalvik cache
Mounts & storage - format cache, data, system
Then install zip from sdcard
Choose zip from sdcard
Choose the rom.zip and continue to install
Reboot
Enjoy your rooted custom rom

I presume your bootloader is unlocked? Are you able to boot into your ROM or not?
If you want to just bring your phone back up and running, you will need to run a RUU or restore a nandroid backup:
So post the result of the following:

The latest TWRP doesn't work on bases greater than 3.14... So I recommend flashing CWM and then proceeding with the rooting process!

Note, you will find a .img file that ends in -JB.img. Only install this version if touch is not working for you in the regular version.

Didn't get you??! What are you trying to say?
To flash a new recovery you have to put the recovery img file in your fastboot folder and then flash it via opening cmd in fastboot folder and phone in fastboot mode... and then :
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache

I recently installed cyanogenmod 10.1 onto my htc one x and it installed fine the problem is, I forgot to install gapps and now my phone is stuck saying this message: "com.android.phone has unexpectedly stopped" the thing is, I can't use my phone for anything i can't even flash back because for some reason my phone deleted the stock rom backup I had this has also stopped it ffrom connecting to the computer so i can't access files or anything I can only access the stock hboot thing and CWMR any help would be appreciated
Flash the boot.img from cm10 rom, make a full wipe in recovery and install cm10 rom.zip and then gapps ..... reboot and it probably will be fine !

Inside the rom.zip, open the file with lets say 7zip and copy out the boot.img file and flash it with either fastboot commands or with a flash tool to the phone in fastboot usb mode

no you flash the boot.img to the phone that is in the bootloader. put the boot.img into the fastboot folder on the pc, open a command window inside that folder and flash it
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
then enter the recovery and do the steps i wrote earlier

Enter the recovery and mount the sdcard as a mass storage device, under the mounts and storage menu. Then copy the gapps to the phone !
