Phone crashes when signal poor - FIX - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found my phone was crashing (freeze and eventually either rebooting or needing a battery pull) seemingly randomly, and most often when I was using Navigation - eventually I realised that it was crashing when I had a poor signal (usually on my commute, when inbetween cell towers I suppose). This started happening when I was using a gingerbread ROM and then happened on every ICS and JB ROM I flashed. Turns out my phone crashed whenever it switched to 2G (because of lack of 3G signal) and tried to get data (ie navigation, tweetdeck, etc), and I could simulate the crash by settings>mobile networks>use only 2G then waiting a couple of minutes.
I found a post from edwinek on androidcentral detailing how to stop your phone switching to 2G: go to the dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* to get to the testing menu. Choose Phone Information and scroll down to 'Set preferred network type' and change 'WCDMA preferred' to 'WCDMA only'. That sorts out the crashes.
However, there's no way to save this preference, so you have to do it every time you boot. BUT, to take care of that you can use Tasker to set it at boot (it's under Phone>Mobile data 2G/3G). Fixed!
Hope this helps someone else out!

There MUST be a better way of switching 3G on and off!

The underlying problem here is that the 3G signal in my house is quite weak, but not so weak that it is undetectable. If I leave my TP2's band setting set to "Auto" then it keeps trying to switch into 3G mode, then dropping back to 2G, with a delay every time it does it. (Drains the battery too). So I'd like to be able to quickly switch between 2G and 3G mode. (Obviously I could just leave it set to 2G all the time, but this is a waste when I'm at work or in some other place which actually has a good 3G signal).
My current solution is that I've got a start menu shortcut pointing to CMBandSwitching.exe in the Windows folder. (This is the same program that is launched if you go to the TouchFLO "settings" page, then hit Communications/Phone/Band). In here I can change the Network setting between "Auto", "GSM" and "WCDMA" which has the effect of turning 3G on and off.
But... there are horrible side-effects. Switching in this way causes the current data connection to get messed up, so that nothing can actually use it to access the Internet. Web browsers stop working, and I can't receive email. I've tried switching the data connection off and back on in Communications Manager, and this works sometimes; but even when it does, it messes up my ActiveSync schedule settings. And usually I simply can't get the data connection to turn back on. More often than not, when I change the Band setting I end up having to hit the reset button to get everything functioning normally again.
There must surely be a way of turning 3G on and off without disrupting the data connection and ActiveSync settings and requiring a reboot? The phone itself can do this in "Auto" mode if I'm moving between areas of good 3G signal and zero 3G signal. Is there perhaps a way to tweak the behaviour of "Auto" mode so that it needs a higher 3G strength signal to switch to 3G? Or is there any way to convince the phone (while in Auto mode) that there isn't really a 3G signal present (even though there is really a weak signal) so that it switches to 2G in a side-effect-free fashion?

I haven't tried it, but it may work for you. It functions more based on what you are doing with the phone as opposed to what bands are available.

Galaxy Nexus loses network connectivity after enabling data

Build: IMM76I
Baseband: I9250XXLA2
If I don't enable data, the phone works fine. I can receive and make calls just fine.
Once I turn on data connectivity, data works fine for a while. Like 40-45 seconds. After that, the connection sort of gets stuck. I cannot make any calls, and if I call my number, I get a 'not reachable' message. The indicator in the notification bar will show full bars for a while, then if I got Settings >> Wireless & Networks >> More >> Network operators to do a manual search for network, the status bars drop to zero, become an 'x', and then go to full again. The behavior then repeats.
Bootloader is unlocked.
Any kind of help will be appreciated.
If it helps, I have the NTT Docomo version of the Galaxy Nexus (SC-04D) that is sold in Japan, but I live (and use the phone) in India.
Are the APN's set up properly for your carrier?
I'm assuming you've tried the usual toggling of airplane mode and rebooting, etc.?
APN is setup correctly, which is why the data connection works fine for a minute or so.
Toggling Airplane mode often does nothing at all, since the cellular connectivity system seems to be stuck, even when it does, it takes a loooong time for Airplane mode to get enabled in the first place, and disabling it takes even longer.
Rebooting the phone fixes the issue, but it returns very quickly (within a minute or so after rebooting).
Also, another similar thread over here mentioned that their problem got solved by flashing the FuguMod kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438417
I flashed the kernel successfully, but the problem still persists.
Mine is doing the same thing. I'm out of ideas.
i'm starting to think this problem is extremely common.

[Q] WIFI making phone lose reception on LTE

I am on straight talk and a few months ago my phone started automatically trying to switch preferred network mode from GSM/WCDMA (auto or preferred) to LTE/GSM/WCDMA every five minutes on the dot. I assume this is because straight talk now uses the LTE network as well. When my WIFI is off, the phone connects to LTE within a second or two and stops switching the preferred network. At that point, everything is fine, and the phone does what it's supposed to, seamlessly switching between LTE, HSPA+ and 3G depending on what signal is strongest.
Here's where it gets weird. If my wifi is on, then I cannot choose LTE/GSM/WCDMA as my preferred network. The phone however keeps automatically trying to switch to it every five minutes. It switches up from GSM/WCDMA preferred or auto (which are the only two i can manually choose) to LTE/GSM/WCDMA, at which point the phone doesn't get ANY signal, including cellular reception (I know because I've tried calling myself from another phone and it goes straight to voicemail). It stays there for about 30 seconds with no reception before finally giving up and reverting back to GSM/WCDMA. The signal comes back and everything is fine for five minutes, and then it automatically tries to switch up again and i lose service again for another 30 seconds. When I restart my phone, the preferred network always starts out on GSM/WCDMA auto and then starts automatically trying to switch up. It's just that if i have wifi turned off, it connects to LTE and everything's fine and if i have wifi on it does the whole cycle i described no matter what.
The only strange workaround that I've found is that if i wait for it to cycle twice while on wifi, losing reception and then reverting to 'GSM/WCDMA auto' and getting it back, i can then toggle the LTE button in the power menu twice and it stops trying to change preferred network. That only works until the next reboot, and of course means i never have LTE. It's very strange. I've tried different ROMS and different modems and it's always the same except that sometimes a different modem will change the interval between the preferred network automatically trying to change. Also it happens when the wifi is turned on, whether or not i'm actually connected to a wifi signal.
Sorry for the essay, just wanted to be thorough, as i've been searching for a long time and find many similar threads, but nothing quite describing my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

service lost every so often

hey all,
I have att on my fire phone , and every now then(atleast once a day) I lose service. It would say searching on the signal bar and it never finds it lol. I would have to restart the phone and then it reverts back to normal. is anyone else having this issue?
I'm guessing it's the fact that LTE has lower signal quality than 3G and
once you force the phone to 3G (once per reboot) it will never disconnect.
LTE is used only for data, when you make calls it will switch to 3G anyways,
so call your phone while it's in LTE and you should notice signal improve ...
To switch do this:
Same as dialing *#*#4636#*#* but this is easier to use:
play.google.com /store/apps/details?id=diewland.testing.phone
Go under Phone Info, then select 3G auto I believe, 4th down from top.
Also, contact Amazon support (right from help on your phone) if the above fixes it.
Tell them you want settings for disabling LTE added to the phone,- I did that and they
said they've submitted to developers, but I guess it's best if more people request this ...

Problems Connecting to Network (T-Mobile) After Flight

Hi All,
I have a Pixel 2 updated with the latest OS and security updates. I regularly travel for business and a good chunk of the time once I land, I find I cannot easily reestablish connection to the mobile network (in my case T-Mobile US) after I land and turn off airplane mode. It usually takes several attempts at scanning networks, attempting to automatically connect, switching to manual connection, rebooting the phone, etc. until finally I can get a connection. Choosing to automatically connect often shows "connected to carrier" but I'm not connected until I reboot or go through a process that can sometimes take 5-10 minutes. In fact, automatically selecting a carrier is almost useless, even when roaming overseas. I've reset my phone, updated versions, etc. and the problem continues whenever I try to reestablish connection when changing areas. Any idea what might be causing it? It seems to happen more frequently in some areas rather than others, as if a switch of bands is an issue.
Not a showstopper issue but as an often as I travel, it becomes a big annoyance. Could this be a potential hardware issue?
Thanks,
Dave
