[Q] Bad reception - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi
i am new to S3 , been having any queries but i suppose this one is the most sensitive of em all thats why starting a new thread.
I was using Epic touch S2 till 2 days back and was getting great reception and great 3G speeds
but S3 is a total disappointment as far as reception at home is concerned ,
many a times it has no signal just a grey trianle or a 0 signal circle sign. at times there are 1 , 2 or three bars , strength keeps fluctuating from -84 to -104
I am on stock rooted , mildly debloated LJ7 , i have removed sprint connection optimizer and a few other apps ( if that matters )
can anyone plz tell me what can i do
tried a coupld of older radios as well

I have been having the same issue as well, so far all that I've come across while searching the net on this issue is that the S3 uses a less powerful antenna to conserve battery life. I'm not really sure what to do, i'm past my grace period of returning it. I'm going to try updating my PRL, and search around maybe there is some configuration changes I can make to increase reception a little. I had Sprint send me an AirRave the other day, but i've negelected to hook it up still. If I find anything out on how to alleviate this issue, i'll report back.

thanks mate
i have tried all the available modems as well ( at least the ones which dont ask for sim or dont kill the 3g icon )
but its of no use
what i feel is if someone can tweak the radio / modem and make it more powerful to latch onto the network , that might work , but then i am a noob , donno much how this all works
will try your suggestions and report back
if anyone feels they can help us plz shoot

Its that ROM just change it believe me I've tried almost every one

I would have to agree with a guy above me. I have been on a flashing spree recently and it turns out that a lot of ROMs have this issue. Just keep trying some new ROMs and you'll find one that works good for you.

But I am on stock LJ 7
I have debloated it myself by using titanium backup.
Can you folks suggest some ROMs which are optimized but still look stocky
Thanks

I flashed the "People's Rom" with LJ7 radio, and hooked up my AirRave. I get decent signal around the city, and perfect reception in my house. The AirRave helps a lot in the house, and the LJ7 radio helps a little through the city.
It's worth a shot, The People's Rom + LJ7 radio. But in the end, I still believe this phone's radio just doesn't cut it. I don't live in a huge metropolis, and the house I just moved into is kinda old, so I just gotta make the best out of a crappy situation.
Sent from my cellphone

I did flash the phantom and peoples rom.
And I didnt lose connectivity.
Instead I moved to 1x and kept the voice.
Now need to figure out how to make it latch on to 3g all the time without losing voice.

low signal

i had low signal from day one but occasionally had perfect 4g lighting speed
my question is can flashing a rom make me loose signal ....after flashing an updated rom today i had almost no signal at all ...
called verizon and they went through what they needed to do and said they are going to send a new sim card ....if that doesn't work they are going to do a factory restore....
anyone have any clue ?
....do... what...huh... does not...compute?
bow chicka wow wow.
Have you tested the signal with other phones? Like say for instance did a friend who with Verizon have better signal in the same room? I know these galaxy nexuses don't have the best signal, but it isn't THAT bad.
Most roms I've seen come devoid of radios, check the dev section and try out a few different radios.
IMO if the radio packages and new simcard don't work flash back to 100% stock and unroot, then send it in on warranty.

Yes we did test the phones , my buddy has the same phone and was on 4g while I had 1x...both phones running liquid smooth 1.25 ...for some reason when I ran the older version I believe it was just 1.2 I had way better signal ...

SGN II Signal

hey
i am sorry if this thread was posted before, but since i didnt find it so i decided to post it over here....
since 5 months im using SGS3 and in the area i am living i got only one or two points out of the signal which means that my signal bar is not full i almost have 1/4 of signal, while my wife's htc is almost full...
my neighbor also confirm this issue he was on S3 also and said the same, when he moved to LG Nexus 4 the bar is totally full !!!
So i, moved to SGN II and the same issue low signal bar !!!
But since a month and i am tracking this issue, i almost tried all the Roms on here all the radios i have found and all are the same low signal...
so i started to believe that it is a samsung issue... BUT when ever i flash CM, AOSP, AOKP, or MIUI on more than 3 phones i got the full bar of signal !!!
i thought for a moment that it could be not real, just the bar look like that, but after comparing the the signal strength , the calling quality, and the 3G speed... i really discovered that no...it is totally better
So thats means it is not samsung issue ( as hardware ) it is an software issue....and till now trying to figure out the difference between samsungs software and the rest cm and etc
so have any one of you noticed this issue, any one have an idea about it ??? any one managed to fix it ?
This section isn't for questions, the Q&A is.
Re: [Q] SGN II Signal
Probably the best place to post given that I never GI to the question and answer portal...
Don't have answer to your question but I agree that I've had pretty poor reception on the Note 2 as well.
Surely there is s fix. I did notice two small contacts on the back cover .... ? antenna

those on the back cover are for nfc not antenna but in all cases even if they were..... the full reception is only on roms that are not based on stock or on samsung ui
When I first got this phone the reception was similar to Galaxy nexus but after having it a full month I think it is a lot better. You could always try flashing another radio. I am on a UK radio in north america and it works well.

I suppose the highly good reception on AOKP CM MIUI will result also in an increased level of S.A.R.
Maybe I am wrong but I prefer lower speed instead of a fried brain.

Best ROM for best reception?

I just got an S3. Yikes.
Even with a solid Wifi signal streaming is very choppy. On voice calls, this is the first phone I've ever had that drops calls mid conversation from home. And I've had a lot of phones on my three lines over 13 years here. Finally, LTE reception in L.A. is not great which is a problem because the phone takes too long to switch off LTE to 3G so I find that I often have no data connection at all even though solid 3G signal is available.
I tried all kinds of tweaks to make the WiFi work better (static IP, different bandwidths, etc) and nothing worked.
Sprint kept telling me to exchange my handset so I'm on my third one and had the same problem with all three.
I'm running out of time on my 14 days so hoping for some ROM guidance so I don't have to kick the tires with a bunch of ROMs trying to find the best performance. I don't want to feel like a beta tester so please only recommend stable ROMs. Don't really care about anything other features, in fact I kind of like to keep it simple. I just want stability and solid wireless performance.
Thanks in advance.

and believe me its a hit OR miss , reception issues are more than common in Sprint GS3
i have had enough and i will be switching to either a EVO LTE or Note 2.
all the best.

I'll ask the obvious question: Did you update your phone with all the OTAs since it came out of the box?
If not, do this, then compare.
There are pockets in LA that have spotty reception, and you may live/work in an area. For me, I work in Downtown and get solid reception with no dropped calls, even in a building which is a nightmare for all network carriers.. I enjoy the AOSP built ROMS, but they seem to create signal problems with phones. So I suggest staying away from those.
I do recommend MIJJz 4.1.2 ROM which is a Sprint leak of the latest build. My phone seems to get improved reception quality and data signal strength. Up until I switched to MIJJz ROM it would take up to 30 seconds in my work building to get updates on Tweetcaster. Now, I get updates in mere seconds. For example, I've been able to keep up on all the football recruits who have signed with UCLA today, including Kylie FItts signing. Good luck to you.
GO BRUINS!!!

The evo lte will be a waste of time cuz its identical hardware to the s3 as far as radios and soc. I do not have the issues that you or op speak of. Streaming videos is hit or miss cuz of the server not the phone or wifi. Maybe it could be router and wifi only in the instance if the video you are streaming is not in a web browser and the router and wifi access point dont like the ports the stream is trying to use and keeps re negiotiating.
I came from the evo lte, I dropped more calls on that than on my gs3.
Download and install the MA4 modem. You will get the best reception out of TW ROMs. I'm on MOAR and it is great. I also have gotten great reception on The Peoples ROM and Darth Stalker. Any of the TW ROMS should be good. I received very poor reception on AOSP ROMs though. Also make sure your PRL and Profile are updated. Most likely it is Sprint and not the phone though. A ROM cant make something out of nothing. I know my area is receiving upgrades and I went from 1 bar always at my house to 3-4 just in the last couple of weeks.

I've never had any issues with reception only on aosp ROMs but I would suggest getting darthstalker ROM and flashing the MA4 kernel it offers the best signal on any ROM I've had and believe me I've flash almost all and above that you get the best battery life and has some pretty good signal and data speed tweaks

I second the MA4 suggestion, you can try the stock or stock+root variant in the development section, I'm getting improved reception and speeds since moving to it.
Also, do some searching for the thread which tells you how to bypass the sprint proxies , that improved my music streaming performance over 3g as well.

Best of luck. I had the evo lte and reception issues through three strait phones over 3 months ended up landing me in a s3
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
actually on the contrary, my experience has been fantastic with Evo Lte
it never lost the signals and data (3G ) was practically double.
occasional low memory and the fascination of BLACK to be black brought me to s3 .
a couple of my friends also say that their LTEs are way better as far as reception and data speed are concerned.
TBH i am still trying to find a way to not let my s3 lose reception here and there.
Though its pretty new but i guess i might try darthstalker's with ma4 kernel
thanks

[Q] Same carrier, two different phones, difference reception

I have my Galaxy S3 and my coworker has an HTC Evo. Both of us have Sprint and yet his phone gets 3 bars of reception whereas mine only gets 1, 2 if I'm very, very lucky.
AFAIK, he's running stock, unrooted and I'm running rooted with latest LiquidSmooth 2.9 with the MD4 modem. No idea what modem he has.
What could be the reason why he's getting better reception? Better antenna build in the Evo?

Some of it has to do with the rom. Some aosp roms show a more accurate bar reading...which is why your's is fewer. I wouldn't really get to worked up over it. They both probably get similar reception and data speeds on 3g

Actually, my data is absolute sh!te and it's a pain to load nearly anything. I get data transfer speeds in the very low kbps.

I'm going to agree Ivpre. I would not get worked up over it. Unless of course it is necessary for you to have more Bars showing then him :silly: . You do most likely get the same Data Speeds.

I would suggest Updating PRL / Profile. Maybe even trying a different Modem. Not everyone gets great reception on MD4. You may have to experiment to see which works better for you.
If you want to properly know if your device is getting less of a signal you need to flash a TW rom, preferably one which is close to stock update prl and profile. Then check your signal and data speeds compared to your friends. AOSP roms remember are built from leaks, and ported from other devices. There is no true aosp source for the Sprint S3. So there's lots of patches and coding which goes into getting the cdma radios working.

We've actually done a Speedtest together and his had a higher data rate than mine. I've had different modem with the earlier builds of Liquid Smooth as well, but still low reception. I've also updated my PRL/Profile in the past in hopes that it'll help but sadly no.
I'll look into having a TouchWiz ROM versus this one. I just love how LiquidSmooth is, so hoping I can find a TW ROM that's just as fun.
EDIT: I don't even know how to find a TouchWiz ROM. I figured it would say "TW" along the subject line, the same way AOSP does, but alas I cannot find that. I have heard of Goodness, is that a TW ROM?

Some devices just get better reception than others. Better internal antennae.
My mom's old photon always got better reception than my 3d & s3

Most likely cause all the roms which do not say AOSP or CM or AOKP or something like that are TW roms. I would recommend MOAR or TPR The People's Rom.

OP,
Unless you're being very careful with your comparisons and using quantitative, and not qualitative, data like db, seeing more "signal bars" means nothing.
Sent from my buttered S3
You must also keep in mind, that even after you switch to a TW Rom. There is no guarantee that you will see better reception. IE more bars. There are quite a few variables involved. What you should concentrate on is making your device the best it can be for you. As CNexus stated. When comparing you have to compare Apples to Apples, and Oranges to Oranges.

software version impact on signal strength and connectivity?

Recently purchased a used sprint note 4... And I'm in love. I had a s5 that was dying a slow death. I love the spen and larger screen... This is indeed the perfect phone!
When I purchased the phone, it was on base qb3. I was having problems with root/rom/sms and I flopped around for a while.
Currently on base pg1 with a stock (mod) 6.0.1 rom.
I've been having problems with signal dropping, occasionally missed sms/mms and poor connectivity.
My question is..
How much of an influence does the base have on signal reliability? I have searched around and I can't seem to find d a solid answer.
Which 'modem' provides the best/stable connection?

I can't say from experience or speak for everyone else. But 2 people i know personally like PK1. But i think that has more to do with being friendly with more custom roms.

Thanks for your input!
I'm hoping someone might now if the base software has any impact on the strength of the antenna... ie - how good/stable the phone connects to sprint.
On pg1, I'm seeing dropped signals without valid explanation. (places my s5 had great signal... Note 4 is barely connecting)
Wanted to follow up...
Went from mm to nougat (lineageos) to mm.... Finally went to lollipop.
Baseband does have a direct impact on signal strength/reliability.
While the note 4 is inferior to the signal strength on my previous s5 (same spots at work, etc)... Going down to lollipop has eliminated dead spots I was experiencing in mm.
Interesting find. I was on pj1, i got decent lte signal in my room at home. When i leave for work i roam, which sucks, but whenever i come back from work I'm stuck on 3g. 3g for days. Pk1 seems to have gotten the lte to stick... I'll know more when i go to work tomorrow.
