The Google search turns up a lot of old and incorrect info. Basically tmobile's wifi calling will allow your phone to work in conditions where there is good wifi signal available but otherwise poor/reduced/no voice signal.
It will count against your voice minutes.
Calls can be made and received in the usual way, it is transparent to you and to the calling party.
Appears to require a tmobile sim, no straight Talk, go smart, etc.

Correct, except on most plans Wi-Fi minutes do NOT come out of your bucket.

So if you have a T-Mobile G2, you should know that we have wifi calling, which is a great thing, but I would like to know if there's a way I can text using the wifi. I've looked around and the only suggestion is using Google Voice, and I do, but it's just inconvenient to give all my friends a 2nd number to text to.
Thanks!

Don't texts go though wifi if you're using wifi calling? I think they do, thus no need for a separate app.

You still use your plans minutes and texts on wifi..so what is the point in "texting in wifi"? They don't charge data for texting/mms

The point is, access when there's no coverage. I have no signal at work and barely 1 bar (EDGE only) outside of my work so I have to run on WiFi

Are you using the stock messaging app or something different? Might not work with a 3rd party app without some tweaking

If it were't for wifi calling, texting and calling from home would be an exercise in futility. So, I know it works.

Hmm... I didn't think using a 3rd party app would affect it, I'll be sure to try that later

I too can also vouch that with the stock and aftermarket SMS apps that text messages go though with WIFI calling enabled. I have 0 signal at my house.
Maybe try turning off your gsm radio to see if that works. Just a thought.
Not sure if you're interested, but I use an app called Textfree which sends texts through wifi to your recipient. It gives you a Textfree number which is a US number. Being Canadian, this really helps with having american friends because they don't have to text internationally and I can text using my Data or WiFi.
Give it a try!
yup mms and sms work wile wafi calling is enable ...i used 3rd paty messenger (handcent)
My phone came up with two triangles with exclamation points on it in the notification bar. One said data access restricted and the other one said voice access restricted. My phone was fine and when I got out of the shower those notifications were there. So, after that my voice and data would not work. I rebooted and voice came back, but data is gone. I cant connect to 4g/3g or anything. My IMEI is there still. I didnt flash anything. Anyone have a clue what might be causing this?
Bump

I'm not sure. I know under data it just said disconnected. It didn't say roaming. Btw I'm talking about using the phone info app to see status. My voice showed bars, but when I tried to make a call it said not registered on network. I rebooted and moved my phone to a good reception spot and data is working. So strange. Does this phone say when it roams?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
It should.
Also, go to settings, more settings, mobile networks and check data roaming. If it happens again it should definitely tell you.
Make sure your plan covers nationwide roaming so you dont accidentally get charged.

Im on $30 monthly unlimited web, txt & 100mln talk. On sgs2 the tutorrial says it would still be counted on the plan. Anybody tries to freeze that counter? Or i will just be happy with skype, google voice, groove ip or same apps available.

wifi calling still counts towards your minutes. Dont think there is a way to stop that since you still go through T-mo network
Why not go with a good VOIP provider?
I pay $1/month for the number and $0.005/min (half a cent) to anywhere in Canada and 1 cent per minute to anywhere in the US. Comes out to about $2-3/month for me.
Some providers even have SMS over SIP. (Anveo)
I think it depends on when you got wifi calling. I had sign up for it over a year ago and that was when it was unlimited. so i'm still getting unlimited minutes which does not count towards my anytime minutes (i have 1000). on the newer sign up of wifi calling, it counts towards your anytime minutes. you should call tmobile to confirm which plan you have.
strange. when I signed up they told me it wouldn't count against my minutes. and I have been using wifi calling for a few months. no added minutes when I did.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Interesting. I've always thought wifi calling minutes are unlimited (mine are). Maybe it depends on your plan. I'd call Tmobile and ask.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
As per tmobile, wifi calling is for deadspot only. Im going voice ip.

You must call tmobile and request free wi-fi calling. They will add it to your plan with no questions asked.

I added mine through the website, in case some people don't feel like calling. This is an option too.

I have a sprint S3, my buddy just got a s3 and is on Tmobile while showing him some stuff on his phone I noticed they have a setting for wifi calling in there settings.. It allows him to use his data connection to receive and make calls when he has low cellular signal. I can't find this anywhere on the sprint version. This would be extremely helpful at work when I have no signal.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
That is only natively available on T-mobile phones. I wish it was available for us too, that would be cool.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Would it be possible to port it? Or is there an app that would do the same thing?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
I've never done it, but there's a way to do it with a combination of Google Voice and a VOIP app.
As far as porting it, I'm not a device so I wouldn't know. I think it has more to do with how t-mobile handles it rather than something that's actually on the phone.

I actually do have Google voice integrated what voip app would I need?

Only app I know of that would be useful here is groove ip. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snrblabs.grooveip&hl=en
Ok if i have the sprint integration of Google voice on my phone? and i download Groove i should be able to use my cell number over wifi?
*on a side note what is the advantages of google voice with sprint integration?
I feel like I saw that feature on ICS and then it went away in JB.
So the past couple days my mobile connection is being cut off, for around 30-45 seconds every 10ish minutes. It comes back on its own but it's getting kind of annoying.
Also, my mom and brother have gotten lte on their phones which made its appearance yesterday for the first time in my neighborhood, and I have yet to get it, we live in the same house. You think maybe these have something to do with each other? On jelly bean running BlackJelly rom

Sounds unrelated, but does your GPS currently work? I had the same issue with data and LTE the other day and my GPS didn't work. But I've since been able to fix my GPS and that also fixed my data dropage (can't test LTE).

I opened up maps and gps is working fine, so is Google now. Is it possible that it's just a simple sim card issue?

It could be. It's more likely an issue with your APN. There's a specific one you have to use for LTE to work (under the assumption you're on ATT).
