facebook for android app | push notifications "fixed"

Hi all,
Sorry if this is old news - but its new to me!
Whilst doing some random googling i stumbled accross another forum where a chap had posted a "fix" he had found regarding the lack of push facebook notifications with the official face book app.
Up untill now it has been the one feature for me that has really let android and my phone down.
I am not sure of the rules on posting link to other forums so I will not do that, though I will run throught the basics below.
This worked for me as well as many others on the other forum. Notifications are instant and I have the polling set to never in the FB app.
You need either a blackberry phone, or to download a blackberry phone simulator to make this work.
1) log out of the FB app on your phone
2)from home screen goto settings, applications, manage applications, facebook and clear data and cache
3)log into your facebook account on a blackberry phone and enable notifications on it. Then log out
4) log into facebook on your PC, goto Account settings (click on down arrow next to "home")
5) click on "notifications on the left hand side"
6) scroll down towards bottom of page and click on "other applications" - click on this, you should now have "facebook for blackberry smart phones" - make sure there is a toick next to this
7) log back into the FB app on your galaxy
8) go into setup, uncheck notifications, then recheck notifications
9) set refresh interval to never
10) that should be it
This honestly works 100% for me and other on the other forum. The notifications are instant and it even shows different icon in your notification bar for different types of post (ie wall post or message)
I am running CM7.1 and FB 1.7.2
This seems to work on a wide range of handsets/android platforms.
I dont know how this works. One suggestion is the permission/software the blackberry enables on the FB server is generic for mobile devices and that it is somehow "mising" from the FB app,
All i know is it works for me,
I take no credit or responsibility for this,
I hope this helps somepeople out as it was driving me nuts!

off topic but, i never installed the app because it requires practically every permission in existence, really don't trust it, knowing facebook's privacy issues

fair enough,
but the one thing that has always ruined its usability is the lack (or poor at best) notifications.
untill now anyway (for me at least)

I found friend caster just as bad to be honest,
is facebook really that hard to write a good app for ?

Did it stop working after an update for FB?
Try this login to your FB account and go to "Account Settings". On the left hand side click "Notifications". Scroll down and you should see one near the bottom that says, "Other Applications". Click that and in there you should see "Facebook for BlackBerry® smartphones" If there is a check mark in the box, then un-check and hit save. Then re-check the box and hit save again. You're done and the notifications will start working again. If there is no check mark then add it and click save. Viola FB notifications should be working again.

Anyone know how to set the default email account??

Can't find a setting anywhere and its defaulting to my gmail account when I write a new email....want it to be default on my Activesync'd one.

You are thinking about it wrong that is why you can't find the setting.
you need to go to Apps in the settings menu, then go down to Gmail.
Once you open the gmail you will have a few options, one is clear defaults (it will be down at the bottem).
Once you clear the defaut flage from Gmail, then the next time you click e-mail you will get a popup window asking you what app to use.
You can select the app you want (active sync account) and either press [just once] or [always]. (note you can double tap for Just once).
If you click always it will set that app as the default and going forward that app will be opened (untill you clear defaults on that app).

I mean when you are in the email app itself (the unified one). When you press compose (little pencil) what sets the default account that it chooses there?

Didn't find that option too. I'm using several account, but I mostly write from only one.

Only way I could find to solve it was to delete all but the account that I wanted to be default then re-add the others. Seems that first becomes the default. I know I have seen an option somewhere in past but maybe the last update took it away? I'm on .283

Yes, option has been there in .230, but on .283 it's gone.

[Q] Getting default choices to stick?

I keep getting the same notices over and over for selecting default apps to, for instance, open a web page. I select Dolphin, check the box, and say ok, but next time I click a link in an email, up pops the same dialog again. I remember reading something about that, but can't find it now. Halp appreciated...

Website asking for location, not working.

Question about websites asking for my location. We have two Note 10+ phones and anytime a website asks for the location the pop-up appears asking for the ok but the phone never allows either option to be picked. I always have to use the back button to clear the pop-up off the screen. We've had both Note 10+'s for months and it's never allowed us to select an option. How do I make the thing work? Using Chrome as the browser and everything is fully updated. I checked the feature in the default Samsung browser and it works fine, but I want to issue Chrome. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Open Chrome and go to settings and look for "site settings" . Once opened look for "location". Open "location" and change your settings accordingly.

Mine does same but I went to settings and tried to change the permissions but it only allows Ask every time, or deny. Only choices. Very odd

For me the issue was I needed to give permission for Chrome itself.
So I went to the phone's settings then apps then chrome then allowed location when in use

I've done that too and still doesn't allow me to pick either option in the pop-up.

I think thats Android not allowing you to select a choice because an 'overlay' is blocking your view.

Got it to work. Went into Settings and search for "on top" and open the Special Access menu and select Appear on top and turn off all the apps.

Question How do I change this pop up setting?

I want the messages to stop appearing on the screen when I receive them. I try to change from here, but nothing opens to choose another option. I also reset in the developer menu but nothing changes. After many years on Samsung, it seems to me that everything is messed up here. Thank you

I assume you mean with the google messages app. Not many options in the app but if you long press the icon and choose app info -> notifications -> additional settings -> bubbles there is an option for "nothing can bubble". Try that.
I don't use the google app or have the phone on a sim yet, so I can't verify. Please report back if it works.

Thanks for the reply. It is correct what you say and that is how it should be. I know I have to walk here BUT I CAN'T. The phone (software) doesn't let me choose anything else when I press "importance"! Do not open other options! Not to show anything in the balloon was already activated. I've had the phone for 6 days and as much as I like how it looks (the only reason I bought it) the software is a joke. I am totally disappointed. I am seriously thinking of returning it. Apart from the cameras, I really consider it successful. But the software is bad.
I tried to change the setting to only one person, but it still doesn't work.
Sorry for bad english ! Google translate.

I installed and tried another messaging application from the PlayStore and I was able to set other notifications! The default application (from google) does not allow you to set other priorities.
