Hello,
Since this phone does not have a physical search button it is kind of difficult to get the voice actions working quickly.
I am looking for a simple button widget, that I can add to widget locker, to provide a way to use a voice action quickly from the lock screen.
For some reason widgetlocker doesn't have this built in, and I can't seen to find any other form of widget to get this done with the default ICS voice actions.
Anyone got any ideas?
problem is that there is no voice search app on the galaxy nexus.
so theres no way for any shortcut or widget to actually access it. closest thing you can do is link to google search and then press the mic button. it's incredibly annoying and one of the first things i noticed with the phone.
there might be a way to do it somehow with a custom shortcut app, but since anycut doesn't work, i don't even know what app to use to try. maybe someone can reply here with an app that does that.

Well car-home doesn't seem to work for the nexus yet, that would have been an acceptable workaround. It is just not feasible to hit that tiny search button while driving
nope absolutely not.
the best advice i can give you, is to download this: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speaktoit.assistant
you can setup a link to that in widget locker. it has a much larger mic button and uses the same voice recognition. it sometimes has issues with calling, for example, if i call my girlfriend i have to say her full name and mobile or it won't call, even though mobile is set as the default.
in it's defense, using the icon on the home screen does the same crap. it doesn't understand my girlfriends name well since it's Carolyn and it keeps thinking i'm saying Caroline. which is stupid me cause Lyn and Line are pronounced differently. but okay enough *****ing about that.
anyway, for now i think personal assistant is your best bet, and it works perfectly on ICS. only exception being custom avatars get really small, but i've contacted them and they're working on a fix for that.
also it has IMO, the BEST voice for any app available on the market.

You don't have to go inside the search bar and then hit the mic.... All you gotta do is hit the mic from the home screen and it'll get you to voice actions. In ways its quicker than before with hardware buttons...But then at times, you can easily go into type search and sometimes it won't go into either search at all.

yeah but his situation was with driving. he wanted to be able to go from the lock screen directly to voice, and that doesn't work in ICS. But the assistant makes it a little easier since it has a larger button and is at the bottom where you'd unlock the phone.
I'd like to see a soft-key mod to add search and "long-press to voice search" functionality.
Jeannie is really good and I think the paid version you can shake the phone to wake it

If you are on a custom 4.0.3 rom , then you can actually have this. For example, using zygote, runandhide has created what is named the 5 soft key mod. It makes the softkeys be menu, back, home, multitasking, then search. If you long press the search, you can pick voice search.
I highly recommend droid theorys zygote romantic, it's so smooth and has great features and a great community backing.

If you're referring to my post, I apologize.
What I said only applies to the CDMA Zygot3 rom by DroidTheory, but there may be other roms that have this. Over on Rootz, another use has created several softkey mods that work with the Zygot3 rom.
There are softkey mods that do add either a menu button or a menu and search button to the softkey bar. The search key that gets added does allow for a long press, allowing for voice search/actions to be chosen.
Long story short, find a rom that has softkey mods similar to the ones seen here and you'll achieve what yo desired.

That sounds like a feature worth switching to a custom rom for. I wanted to see how I liked a vanilla stock phone the way Google intended... its my first Nexus. I assumed that the roms would have a few kinks in them. What would you recommend? I have the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
I have tried aokp, cm9 kangs, and have been sitting on droidtheorys axiom (formerly zygote). It's pretty slick and he updates fairly regularly. Check it out on rootzwiki. I may also try aokp or rootzboat just to check out the customization.
In terms of kernels, I haven't found one I love yet. Imoseyon has been doing a good job, tempted to try faux or Franciscofranco. They're all working to get correct undervolting though

I agree with this. This should have been configurable in the stock OS. I missing being able to kill an app by holding the back key on CM7. I'd prefer to stay stock on this phone, and haven't found a good reason to even root it yet.
I'm not even sure I need the search button if we could map whatever we wanted to the current button's long press.
Back - kill current process
Home - Voice action
Task Switcher - App drawer? System Search?
I'm wondering if any of you guys experience this. I got my Galaxy s3 almost a month ago. Out of the box, when I double click the home key, it launches S voice. However, after Rooting (or sometime after that), I noticed that double clicking the home screen doesn't launch the S voice anymore. I toggled the setting under S-Voice menu to activate or deactivate double click launch but there's no difference -- still doesn't launch it. I did update my ROM to Kyan ROM hoping changing the ROM will make it work however, it still doesn't work. I even followed the instruction in replacing double click launch form S-Voice to Google NOW, unfortnately, still no luck.
Anybody knows how to check or fix this? Really wanted to use the double click function for Google NOW.

Check kyan's changelog and thread to see if it's been changed or if anyone else is having the same issue... you're running custom software so this needs to be addressed or answered in his ROM thread...
This should be in QnA
Try the home2 shortcut from the play store, works great with stock rooted ICS with Google Now

I use apex launcher and there is a setting in there for the home button to open any app (I chose the google search app). I have it set up so that first press goes to home page of the launcher and second press opens up google now.
I did use home2shortcut as well but still didn't work. I don't think its purely a kyan rom issue as I had this issue when j was still using stock.

This work around worked. Seems like a great replacement to the touchwiz... wondering what functionality does the touchwiz have that this doesn't have. Also, I'm still hoping I could get a way to make the double click work without APEX Launcher... but yeah, this is a good workaround!
Thanks!
Installed an AOSP rom and wish you had KnockOff?
Well now it is here
Simply download the file below, install xposed, enable the module, reboot your device, and voilà!

Also if you have G2 Xposed, there should now be a KnockOff setting for those of you with AOSP that will work on the latest beta.
Just tested it on D801 running houstonn's PA 4.4, working great. Thanks.

This is awesome! I remember enjoying your G2 Xposed module on stock LG rom so much I had to donate! Thanks for giving us some AOSP goodness!
Works great on current cm11 nightly. Thank you. Now hopefully people will stop flooding posts with "is knock off working on this build???????"

So this allows Knock-Off globably throughout the rom or just the status bar? The Stock LG rom really only supported Knock-Off on the status bar where the Launcher supported Double-Tap = Screen Off (which I use flawlessly with Nova Prime + Screen Off app).
Very nicely done though. I know all of the dev threads get this constantly asked.
So this requires the "KnockOff.apk" + updated G2 Xposed Settings?
Nice work.
I purchased G2 xposed for the 30mins I used the stock LG rom so it's great to get some AOSP love.
We've been able to use knock off via a variety of methods but this will rule out the need for 3rd party apps and specific launchers.
Thanks!

You can download KnockOff.apk or if you already have G2 Xposed installed you can use that
This mod allows you to use the knockoff feature when double tapping the statusbar.
Should work for any rom on any device

How about double tapping the lockscreen to turn the screen off again. Does that work with this mod?

Interested about this one too, if anyone has tested yet please ?

This is great!! Do you mind sharing how it works?
I created an app which simply request root and send "input keyevent 26" command (Power Button). I use it for Nova Launcher double tap gesture but there is a one (1) second delay for the screen to turn off. I can't seem to get rid of the delay. Any advice? or do you mind building such a simple app for knock off from launcher?

There is a free app in the Play Store called Screen Off and Lock, that was what I had used with Nova in the past. Now I just use a Nav Ring with Screen Off.

I tried most apps in the Play Store, they all locks the screen immediately. (I'm using pattern lock)
I'm currently tasker as well, this is what i did:
A1: Keyguard [ Set: off ]
A2: System Lock
A3: Wait [ MS:15 Seconds:0 Minutes:0 Hours:0 Days:0 ]
A4: Stop [ With Error: off Task: ] If [ %SCREEN ~ on ]
A5: Keyguard [ Set: on ]
A6: System Lock
This will engage lock after 15 seconds. This doesn't look clean though since the task will run for 15 seconds after the screen is off.

Well, without root the send input command does not work. I tried it with "Terminal Emulator".
Well I'm not sure about with or without root (I'm rooted), but I double tap and my screen closes instantly without any delay. I also have swipe down for notifications and swipe up to hide status bar.
Hello There
I just wanted to know, how can i add softkeys to my at&t s3 i747 like nexus devices. my bottom keys stopped working after a fall & all that works is HOME button neither MENU or BACK button lightup or work.
Searched this forum a lot found this line "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" to add to build.prop but whenever i did that the phone just keeps restarting with every rom that included stock, aosp, cm11 & other derivatives.
Good old captivate used to have this option with CM9 but i cant find an option to enable it anywhere. So im here to ask if there's any module to get those softkeys.
Tried all apps from playstore nothing seems to work.
Nothing can be done???

The "qemu.hw.etc..." should work fine as long as you save correctly and reboot after. If you're willing to use 4.3, use an AOKP ROM like Task650's, PAC, or Paranoid Android which comes with a persistent navigation bar option if I'm not mistaken.

Hi there,
I'm using a Lock Screen app for ages now.
it's an app that turns off the screen without having to press the physical power button.
This one, for example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=wq.lockscreen
The issue started since installing the lock screen app and now I can't unlock the phone using my finger print, but only using the pattern. I tried several apps now and none of them worked for me. Only when I uninstall the app the finger print function works flawlessly..
Does anyone here came across this king of issue and found a solution ?
Thanks, guys !

There is a setting for "Smart lock and Nexus imprint" Says Experimental. Works every time for me.
It's a mm issue, not your hardware or software.
The confirmed workaround is use root and nova prime gesture to lock ie double tap/swipe down or up etc. Nova launcher prime is on a sale now too, double goodness

I'm using Nova for along time now, i know there's an option to add a gesture in order to lock the screen, but it doesn't work like any other app i've tried. I don't have root yet on my device, but Nova hasn't asked me for root either.

I'm not sure how it works without root. Give it a try though. It works the same as other lock apps except you're using nova gestures in the home screen.
That's the problem here, all other lock apps can't make it work.
Iv'e tried with Nova now, same issue :\

Any app that offers a real screen off without lock function (which wouldn't interfere with Imprint) needs root to do so.
Nearly all of the apps that provide a screen off function without root use the same API method which by design or oversight on the part of Google overrides both Nexus Imprint unlocking and Smart Lock settings on 5.x devices.
There is a Google Issue tracker thread here - star if this design decision/oversight irritates you - https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=191955
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro has a working method but it is really just smoke and mirrors, not a true screen off action.
All it does is temporarily reduce the screen timeout to a minimum value (10 seconds) and sets a black screen overlay until the screen has naturally turned off. It works fine unless you invoke the shortcut and decide within 10 seconds that actually you wanted your screen on.
Nova can't do it with it's standard method either.
View attachment 3573496
If you already use an automation app like Tasker or MacroDroid along with Secure Settings (I prefer MacroDroid) it's pretty easy to emulate the https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iglint.android.screenlockpro workaround and add some extra functionality to cancel the delayed real screen off if you decide you want to interact with the device in the few seconds after activating
Basically the steps are:
Use Secure Settings to set screen timeout to 1 millisecond (this actually results in a 7 second screen time out)
Set brightness to minimum
Set a 100% screen dim
Set Immersive Mode (MacroDroid doesn't support this natively dunno about Tasker - but there are apps that support this via intent so doable).
Reverse the above when the Screen off system broadcast is received and on whatever trigger event you like - I've got a proximity sensor wave to wake set up anyway via MacroDroid so just use that.
