[Q] Signal drops to nothing seconds after booting phone - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Alright so my s3 worked fine for months then all of a sudden it wouldnt get signal.. when i reboot the phone it has full signal (i can make a call or send tects) but only for a few seconds then it drops to nothing.. under the status menu it says mobile network status connecting and never changes.and when i try and search for carriers it just says searching and nothing ever happens.
ive tried absolutely everything i can think of.. ive flashed the stock 4.1.1 rom ive edited the apn settings ive even flashed a couple different versions of the modem but the same thing happens.. ive even completely changed carriers!!!
plllllease help! im ready to throw this thing against a wall.. and im getting sick of paying for a phone that doesnt work!

Did you put a pin or something in any holes in the back of your phone near the battery? I gave a suggestion, but it's a last resort. LAST resort.

Do you mean like some sort of reset button??

Just as another possibility.... your phone didn't drop it's IMEI number, did it?

Is your IMEI still showing? And the same as behind your battery?
Did you make sure your APN is the same as your carrier's?

alright so my imei was showing 0... i followed some steps in another thread and now its showing my imei again (same as on the back of the phone) but the same problem is still there.. signal drops to nothing within seconds of restarting the phone. any other ideas?
Thanks

Did you check your APN?
Did you try other modems?

yes ive tried multiple modems and set the apn setting for my carrier.. although i thought it should still connect to the network without apn settings and just the data wouldnt work.
ive looked through a ton of other threads and ive seen alot of people talking about .nv_data files in the efs folder.. when i use root explorer i dont see any .nv_data files in that folder

No, you need APN no matter what to have signal and data. Did you try deleting all your APNs and adding your carrier's LTE APN?

Hmm well I dont think Its an apn problem.. the Phone connects to the network. But only for A Couple seconds then goes hours of having no service but will periodically connect again for A few seconds

I haven't found any way of fixing it.. Sometimes the signal will even come back.. But not for more then a few seconds

Okay after weeks of trying to fix this problem your experiencing, I've finally fixed the issue! .. Basically all you have to do is follow the guide here to fix your imei #. (MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS CORRECTLY) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997 . Anyway, after you do that, call AT&T and then tell them your phone is having trouble with service and its going in and out. They're going to try to resync your phones IMEI number with their towers. After they do that your phone will work like it used to..

Help! No Network after Sim Unlock!

Help!
I'm an experienced use, but am totally lost here.
I got the SIM unlock code from Tmobile yesterday, threw in an ATT sim, unlocked it, no problem.
I thought it was working fine yesterday
Then when I woke up this morning, i have no network at all! Just the circle with a line through it.
Anyone have any thoughts/guesses/help? I don't know what to do!

easy test
if you still have any old phone in the house, or borrow a phone from a friend/co worker for a few minutes
just to swap the SIM card and try, then you can quickly figure out if it's an issue with the phone or the SIM
SIM unlocking a phone will not cause the network problem, unless the IMEI is black listed
is the phone able to find any network?
also you can use Odin to flash back to factory stock

at least i dont think its blacklisted....i bought it from a guy on craigslis.
but it worked fine for weeks.
why would this cause a problem?
i called tmobile and they didnt say anything,,,,
Go in to network settings and check network operators. If your phone sees T-Mobile/ATT but you cant connect then that means your phone was blacklisted for either being lost or stolen.

when i type 'search now' it doesn't find ANYTHING.
it stays on 'searching' for a while', doesn't select anything
then it comes back showing tmobile and att.
when i select tmobile (or att) it says, "your sim card does not allow a connection to this network"
If the phone was blacklisted, why would tmobile not say anything to me (and why would it only stop working now?)

I would check sim card mine went bad after I took it out of my phone then stuck it in my pocket for a half hour or so when I tried using it it said same thing about connecting to network so I tried my sim in another phone and it didn't work. change the APN settings. there are a few out there that will work but to keep it simple..
go to:
Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks>Access Point Names
press the menu button and go to New APN
for the name put "ATT" and for APN type "phone"
leave everything else blank

I did.
I now believe that this is probably related to the same bug that is causing people to lose their ISDN and have the same loss of radio connection.
see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474504 for one example (lots of others if you look)
Hello. FWIW: Not quite the same problem, but the fix for me might work for you by chance.
When I got my unlock code from T-Mobile then applied it, my phone did register with the T-Mobile network, but it could not receive phone calls.
Using her phone, my girlfriend was kind enough to help me test various scenarios: phone calls in, out; sms in, out; GSM or Wi-Fi; etc. We narrowed it down to no calls in on GSM at least.
Like you I tried rebooting, but I did not get as far as re-flashing, etc. What I did try on a hunch was clearing all user and system apps' cache with Titanium Backup. VoilĂ ! It worked.
I hope that helps you with your phone (assuming you use Titanium Backup.)

HELP please...Problem regarding very poor signal after root?

Hello. I finally decided to root my galaxy s3 a few days ago. After I did so I downloaded some themes, ad block, etc. the normal stuff. The next day I started noticing something odd with the phone, such as very poor data connection (I can restart the phone and it will say I am on 4g for a minute or two although the connection doesn't say the same, but then it will either go to EDGE or give me no connection at all.) and poor network (says I have good bars but texts don't send often and take 10 minutes to receive; phone calls drop.}
I took the device to the AT&T store and got a new SIM card and that did nothing. 45 minutes of "support" did even less for me. I unrooted it, factory restored it, nothing.
I am desperate, if anyone would give me a workaround / fix, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you, now for the QCN..........I will be very happy when this is fixed lol.
So whenever I try to create a QCN I am unable to find it in the location I placed it, and I have hidden files visible. When I try to slide it to a different folder it says the file doesn't exist anymore. My phone has moved to "Unspecified" in devices and printers and I am unable to access any of its files even after trying to reinstall drivers multiple times (it gets stuck on the 5th one...network something...). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve the problem with not being able to access my phone?
Ok I figured out how to access my phone and I think installing a new modem fixed it.....we will wait a couple hours and see.

Ive lost completely my mobile signal

Hey guys, this afternoon my phone turned off itself becouse of the lack of battery life and then it completely lost its capacity to connect to the network ( in order to make calls ).
Its kinda rare becouse when I press and hold the power button to get access to the power menu it says "airplane on" when its off really, even after disable it keeping saying the same.
Ive already restored it, wipe everything in the device but Ive got still the issue going on.
Any ideas? Please I really need help

It might be a problem with your carrier. So, I suggest maybe trying to go into places where there is really strong signal and try there. Maybe reboot a couple times. If the problem still persists, then contact your carrier and ask if they have anything to do with it. Because, I almost guarantee that's the problem.

I've already tried it without success, and even called my carrier and they turned to me the network was fine.
I reckon is a problem with the fact that airplane mode is turning on and off automatically

Flash stock rom, delete superuser or supersu, and take it to your carrier to complain. If the problem persist on stock then it's really nothing you can fix. You should be able to get a new device.

[Q] Rogers Galaxy S3 4G/LTE but I'm stuck on Edge?

Hey guys, I'm using the Galaxy S3 and my current carrier is Rogers. I've always been on 4G in the area that I'm in, and with the countless roms I've installed I've never come across any problems. Today I was trying out some new roms, but when I flashed them, I noticed that it swapped from 4G to E(aka Edge). Even if I flash back to my nandroid backup or even a fresh install if the previous rom I was using, I'm still stuck on Edge. Now even though it says I'm connected to Edge, never mind reduced speed, my internet just doesn't even work at all. For some reason even if I'm connected to wi-fi, no matter what I do it says there's no connection. I've read about flashing modems, which I have tried and it seems I'm doing it wrong? I put it on to my sd, boot in to recovery and flash it, but whenever I do I just go in to an endless boot loop. I've spent the past six hours pulling out my hair and trying to get this fixed but no solution yet, so now I've put my hope in to you guys! Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
P.S. I'm sorry if I can't reply back right away, I'm currently doing night shifts at work and even though it's 9:45am here, it's technically my bed time, so I will get back to you as soon as I can!
Some extra information if it may help - The rom I was using that worked properly was Triune 2, I've played around with a few roms since, but the one that originally swapped my 4g to Edge was Mark of the Dragon 3.0.
I can think of two possibilities:
1) Some ROMs will reset your phone's internal network settings to only use specific types of networks (e.g. when I first got my phone, the CM10 build I flashed at the time disabled LTE). You can check this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, going into "Phone information", and scrolling down to "Set preferred network type"; you'll want one of the LTE settings.
2) Reportedly, your phone's IMEI will sometimes be erased during a ROM update (check this in the Settings -> About phone -> Status menu, or in the same "Phone information" menu as above). Check here if that happened.
Hey, I gave number 1 a shot and everything was fine, so I took a look at option 2 and my IMEI isn't gone, but it's showing "0". I searched online and it seems like "0" means it's been deleted, so I'm about to give it a go and see if I can get it up and running. Anyways, thanks for the reply! I'll post and update on how everything works out.
*UPDATE* Alright, problem fixed! I'm back at 4G, everything is running smooth and fast! Took a little bit but everything is working fine, and now I know how to fix this problem if it should arise again, thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!
Hey, I'm back again. Well, I thought the problem was fixed, I was back on 4G all day until a little after I started work at around 10:30pm when my network swapped back to Edge and it's been there since(now 6:57am). My IMEI is still intact as well. I've tried flashing back to stock with odin and injecting the file to see what happens but no luck. Unfortunately I haven't reached the 10 post marker which means I can't ask for help on that part of the forum yet, so here I am in your hands once again, any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

Out of curiosity, have you checked the "set preferred network type" setting again?
I've also heard recently that there may be some problems with Rogers APNs in non-standard ROMs, so it might be worth checking your APN settings.
Or, it could be an LTE network outage, unlikely as that seems...
Yes I have and everything is fine. However, I was looking around at a few things some other people have done, not with the exact problem I have, but similar, I tried something out and it worked. Dial *#197328640#>UMTS>DEBUG SCREEN>PHONE CONTROL>NETWORK CONTROL>BAND SELECTION>LTE BAND PREFERENCE>LTE ALL, let it sit there for about 30 seconds and then reset the phone. Do it again, go in to BAND SELECTION and then choose AUTOMATIC, wait 30 seconds and reboot your phone again. I'm back to 4g and actually, it seems faster than when I originally had 4G, but I think I'm just used to how slow Edge is now . Although the other fix got me back to 4G as well, but then it swapped back to Edge so I'll wait for at least 24 hours before I can confirm it completely fixed. Once again thanks for the response! Most helpful forums I've been on!
It hasn't been 24 hours but I thought I'd report back while I'm on my break. I'm still at 4G so things seems to be going well, hopefully it won't go back as it seems like it will stay at 4G. So, unless I'm having troubles again, rather than waiting the 24 hours and posting an update, think of it as a good thing that I don't report anything(or at least I will, since it's my phone ) Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!

Thanks do much for this, I had the exact same problem after flashing MiuiAndroid and Wicked Sensations. Don't know which one effed it up but it was definitely one of those two. Also, I Don't think it is a placebo effect on the speed increase, cause mine is blazing fast after implementing this fix. 2 things that i can think of...
1)Make sure you have the LTE option selected in your Mobile Networks.
2)Take a look at your APN settings for you carrier. Flashing roms sometimes erases these settings.
That's where i would look first...
Cheers

Please let me know if you fix this. I'm having the same problem, and playing with LTE band selection doesn't work. When I force the band selection, the phone won't even go into service. The same thing happens with WCDMA.
Apparently, the nvbackup stores more than the IMEI. Even when you replace the IMEI, nobody seems to get data back. Unless, of course, you had a backup. Which, unfortunately, I was not smart enough to do....
Hey guys, I have the exact same issue as this:
-I flashed CM10.2 from a CM10.1 nightly which wiped my IMEI. I injected the IMEI using NV-items reader/writer.
-Reloaded stock ICS rom, IMEI returned but couldn't get up from EDGE
-Tried using the peoplesarmy's removed IMEI restore tool, didn't do anything
The phone still works, only its on EDGE all the time.
Literally the only solution for me was using my warranty and getting a new phone.
REPEAT: BACKUP YOUR **** OR YOU GOTTA GET A NEW PHONE!

urgent issue with flashed s3 on Page plus

Hi everyone I have a flashed samsung galaxy S3 (Sprint Bad ESN) on Page plus.... everything works,, talk, text, 3G data, however my problem is whenever I put the phone in the charger... the phone network signal stops working (I cant get any calls or texts), and it goes back to normal after I unplug it from the charger... does anyone know why this happens..? I heard it may be some kind of bug where when Samsung S3 is connected to old verizon towers it does that.. does anyone know a fix to this? it seems to be similar to this issue http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/104803 Also , the phone is rooted... running 4.1.1 ( I had to downgrade in order to get my MSL)..

Dang. Try turning off the connection optimizer or remove it altogether
I've seen this exact issue before...not trying to slam you, but search and you'll most likely find the thread i saw a while back where the OP was eventually able to fix it. I think it was the connection optimizer though.
EDIT: Search on XDA only

Ahhh it was a while ago...I'll try searching i suggest you do too, try something like "network off when charging" or "charging phone disconnects network
And you can remove it altogether by deleting the ConnectionOptimizer.apk from /system/app, then reboot and wipe dalvik cache

Some users have reported that removing it has caused issues, just freeze it with TB or Rom toolbox

If you remove it completely the mobile networks menu will FC, so you'll be stuck on whatever network mode you were on when it was deleted
I like to break stuff!
I had a friend try the deletion and wiping method.. he said it made it a little better, but it didnt solve the problem. Therefore, im thinking the issue is connected with the optomizer.. does anyone know of any other methods to try? thnak u
I have the exact same issue where my cell reception is SEVERELY limited when plugged into the charge. It fluctuates from No-network to 0-bars. When it shows 0-bars sometimes it lets me make calls or send texts, but calls will drop quickly and texts will sometimes fail. But as soon as I remove from charger, it goes back to 3-bars in my house, and works just fine.
I have even tried using usb cables with ferrite cores on both ends thinking it may have been an interference issue, but that didn't do a thing.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
