(Q) Youtube app wifi lag - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi
I noticed with Youtube app, when I watch HD video, I experience heavy lag when I'm on wifi, when I turn off wifi and use 4g the lag is gone, I switch back to wifi, the lag is there again.
When I switched to 4G, it's still on HD mode.
My 4G is around 8MB up 1MB down, wifi 15-20MB up 12-15 MB down, so it doesn't make any sense why I'm experiencing lag on wifi, but not on 4G.
I tried to check any setting on wifi, but I didn't see option that might limiting my wifi.
Anyone else having the same problem, any help?
Ps: The problem seems only happens with Youtube, I dont have this problem with Netflix nor Viki.
Thanks in advance.

I've been experiencing the same problem of late. It got so annoying, I stopped using the app and just run YouTube via Dolphin Browser.

Bump ...
No one else having this problem?

I went into settings > general and unchecked the improve youtube box. Now I dont get the wifi lag anymore. Hope that helps.

I tried that didnt notice any change also tried using numerous versions of youtube hacked and normal old and new no go its definitely a youtube app issue which is dumb
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

Having same issue on HTC one x+. makes me insane. Flagship phone. 85 mb down on Verizon fios. Can't play more than ten seconds of hq video without pausing.
Hulk. Mad. HULK. SMASH.
Ps. If I go to app info and clear cache and storage, I can play a few videos before going back to stuttering.
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda app-developers app

Yep I made a thread on my forum about that to it works for a while then no go this is crazy all those smart people at google messin things up
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

It's definitely something in the app itself, I can see the embedded YouTube HDin flipboard just fine, something about the wifi buffering setting in the app must be messed up, since slower 4G works better than faster wifi.

I just use the older black theme style YouTube app
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app

I stoped using youtube app cant take it anymore! What I do is I go on youtube.com on the Internet page and set as desktop view and watch it from there no freezing, stuttering or lagging! !!

Seriously? Like, seriously guys? Hehehe
That won't fix the problem that OP is having. Search for what was mentioned, there is something coded by default that causes WiFi to basically get choked down to almost nothing when the phone is sleeping. It stays on, but the speeds go to ****.

Thank you for contributing instead of just condescending.
My first response is always the obvious fix, especially when something simple like streaming music over wifi is cited... You'd be surprised how many problems are fixed like that.
However I still haven't experienced that problem, but the OP wasn't specific enough to start eliminating possibilities and jump to a bug as the reason

I am also having this issue, Verizon GN.
Reading that linked thread a little earlier, it does seem to indicate that the new setting "WIFI PERFORMANCE FULL/HIGH" is not properly modified by apps, be they winamp or tune in (the two I have tried).
As a result, I too was getting drop outs at the time my device went to sleep. Most often the radio would pick up again after 10 seconds and continue to operate normally, but sometimes there would just be CONSTANT buffering/drop outs - noticed this more with tune in radio (tried various stations).
I am trying out the 'wifi high performance' app also linked earlier. Knock on wood, it seems to helping so far. I do have a question about it, the app (1x1) square just pulls up a screen with a checkbox for the wireless network correct? There is also a widget (2x2) which doesnt seem to ever show up on your home/main screens even though you manually put it there however many times.
Seems like the widget is not working, when pinging im getting atrocious times and still getting the drop offs... thought it might have been fixed but now trying in tune app and having constant issues.
Is there any solution? This means I cant stream radio over wifi ever??? WTH
ive never experienced this. ive downloaded roms while its asleep. radio streaming no problem. im on the sprint gnex....
Guys, see this topic and thread about the widget not staying on the screen, and about the size issue.

[Q] Major lag spike when playing a game and connected to wi-fi.

So basically I had this issue for awhile now, even on stock ROM and kernel. Now i'm using CM10 nightly with franco kernel. Whenever I play a game offline or out of reach pf Wi-Fi, the game runs perfectly fine. But when connected to Wi-Fi i'm getting huge frame drops (1-5 fps) every like 2-3 min. Maybe it has already been answered, but yes, I did search the forums, I searched pretty much everywhere. Anyone had similar issues?
What about 3g/4g?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I do,and I still did not got a workaround with this...but I don't have this issue only when connected to wifi, just every time i do something(play a game, scrolling, switching homescreens) the only workaround is using faux kernel wich is pretty good(in my case)
Maybe an app like facebook

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It does it with mostly 3D games, but it does it as well for a few 2D games like Drag Racing. I noticed that turning off auto-sync got rid of the lag for about 10 minutes. But then the framedrops would happen again.

Seems as though you have something running in the background.
You could try, is catch what is going on via logs (ddms may be helpful here since it has a built in log, but you can get them via adb as well) or adb shell commands, adb shell top for example. Trying and see what is going on when the lag spikes hit.
Alternatively, you can disable/uninstall apps that could possibly be the offenders. Facebook apps, twitter apps, messaging, email...perhaps even widgets. Then try and game until you figure out what the offender was.
This is assuming it is another app at fault.
Alright thanks for the advice! Won't be able to try it right now as I'm going on a vacation but as soon as I can I'll do it and report back.

YouTube v5 update - landscape issues

Seems like a samsung problem, just wondering if anyone on xda has been able to find a fix...
with the new youtube update (v5), there is no longer a time bar on landscape so you can fast forward/rewind a video.. and there's also no way to go back to portrait mode since that whole bottom area is missing (have to minimize the video, and then click back in... )
the app has ad 3-4 updates since its release and the problem is still there. been using v4 as the app is pretty unusable at this point. seems to be an issue with all samsung phones. i really love the new design but it's too bad that there's this huge glaring bug.

Pandora keeping screen on

I'm having a problem with Pandora keeping the screen on when plugged in to the aux port I have to lock the the screen or it won't time out and it has only happened since their latest update. Revert to the old version?
Mine is doing the same thing. Pretty freaking annoying.
It is extremely annoying, I would assume it's a "feature" to the companies paying for video advertisement.
On that note, when video advertisements come on if you turn the screen off it skips the advertisement.
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
Not only that but my girlfriends Pandora as well as mine keep randomly shutting off and freezing. any one else having these issues?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Ok guys, this is really stupid but I just figured this out. I feel like a total Herb for not noticing this earlier.
Open Pandora and go to the Settings tab. Go to Advanced. Put a check in the "Conserve battery" check box. Hit back. That's it. The screen will turn off on its own now.
I don't know why this option automatically changed itself in the new version of Pandora, but checking that box lets my screen auto shut off now.
Good lord.

what exactly do you mean wifi auto connect fail? It has been auto connecting for me? do you mean auto connect as in walk home, phone detected wifi signal and automatically turn wifi on and connect? if thats the case then i have no idea as ive never tried to do so.
Anyways.........anyone know a good cm11 kernel? currently i am using stock kernel and maaaan its missing so many functions D:
testing since yesterday, the rom is stable and whitout problems, don't had crash etc, just have a glich when u take a screenshot (in the preview) but the captured immage is fine.
I think the only thing that must be fixed is the browser, some times is choppy, double tap for zoom sometimes don't works and the video preview don't work.
I'm not sure but i have noticed a slight battery drain, more than the 4.3 stock:good:

pretty stable nightly
Using CM11 nightly since yesterday. Had no issues except the screenshot preview. Screen shots are gettive saved correctly though. Also a little drop in battery life but maybe cause I am using it more. Is good for daily use.
I have flashed the nightly and there are 2 issues so far.
1. google now does not work
2. Spotify only plays 5 seconds then it goes mute while the playback continues.
I've found another issue: except for whatsapp and SMS I don't get any instant messaging notifications. Fb messenger as well as hangouts don't show anything in the status bar.
Funnily I use hangouts for SMS and it shows SMS...
Can someone confirm that?
Apart from that the only thing that really bugs me, is the glitch when playing music and powering off the screen. I would call it Playback-bug.
I dirtyflashed though. Too lazy to wipe, don't want to lose a lot of the stuff.
If nothing helps, I will wipe...

Ive noticed this a lot lately as well.
My gnex is no longer on any carrier, strictly use on Wi-Fi now, and ever since 4.3 I experience same exact thing as you. (It also seems to randomly forget access points I've saved multiple times for no reason hahaha)
Haven't tried 4.4 to see if it persists yet
