After flashing the XXJP2 firmware, I've found an application which is called ScreenCaptureService.apk in /system/app directory.
Then I thought it was a sort of capturing tool.
I've tried to press as many key combinations as I could but it didn't work.
Now, I'm wondering if it's the one what I'm thinking or not.
What's your idea?
I know, of course, I can take a screenshot with some apps by rooting my device.
cheers!

Just an fyi for those that think they need root access for screen captures. Pressing back and home button will save current screen as image file. Just stumbled on this by accident and thought I woolf share w xda community.

No it doesn't exit applications. You press and hold the back button, and then press the home button. It only goes back, when tapping the back button.

Wow, so all we have to do to make a nice screen capture program that doesn't need root access is to dispatch a keyevent or two
ye when I hold it, it still exits randomly lol.
Well, for example it exits immediately from Handcent SMS.
You can get a screenshot from it holding back key, launching application (still holding back) and pressing menu.
[Q] I accidentally did a screenshot
No idea how i did it, im running stock froyo with adw launcher. Pressed something then i heard the camera sound go off with a notification that a screenshot was done. Went into my main directory of my phone and there was a folder titled screenshot with it in there. ..
How did i do that?

tested it, and it works
Thanks alot guys.
You can also use 'ShootMe' from the Market. Once it's running, all you have to do is shake the phone and it takes a screenshot. No more button combos, and easy to do with just one hand =)
I upgraded to JPM and is confused about same thing. But, I was able to capture screen once accidently.
It does take screenshots and save it into SD/ScreenCapture in PNG format
Here's How you can do it.
Keep a finger on BACK button and press HOME button.
Srock screen capture ...how?
Today I suddently find a /screen capture directory in the /sdcard, and also some screen shoot inside it.
Is there anyone help to teach me how to use this function? thx.
I also find screencapture.apk in /system/app, is this the app which responsible to create the picture?

Press middle (hardware) button while holding down back (soft) button.
Cool find but the button combo is crap. Most of time it quits the app i want to capture. Ill stick to shootme and kill the service

Don't really know why this app was never mentioned here.
I know it from my Archos 70 times.
To know what it does its best you look in the play store for it, but I want to tell you for what only reason I use it.
You can have shown all buttons you would have as hardware buttons, but that's not the point.
If you use the pro version you can edit and reorder those buttons, and that's what I did.
I choose only one button and that was the menu button, when only one button is mapped it directly uses that instead of expanding than I put the icon to the lowest right corner., and there you have the menu button, now you can use recent apps button like intended without having to map it to long press or something else.
Sure you can do the it with the recent apps button instead, whatever you prefer or use more frequently. Will try it the next days and see if it's practical in daily use.
You can see the button in the picture attached, you can set 3 sizes, for now I try biggest, that's what you see on the pic. I don't think it's interfering in use because it's totally in the corner which u don't use that much.
This way you get the speed of the recent apps button with the comfort of having a menu button
Let me know what you think of it

"Squeeze control" if u know wat I mean. But back to on-topic, u know that u can have recent apps and menu at the same time in one button? Look for it in tweaks.

Yes but only with long press that's to slow and uncomfortable sometimes.

My phone is rooted,
How do you multitask? For example if I am using Chrome or the stock browser, how do I switch to a app without exiting the browser? I thought it was long press the back button but it does not work. And how do I change the icons on my lock screen? Ive looked through all the setting and cant find it.
1. Press and Hold the HOME button (the physical button in the middle)
2. Settings --> Lock Screen --> Lock Screen Options --> (press) Shortcuts (not the on / off button .. the word)
If you dont have the multiwindow , you need to update firmware to get it.

Thanks you did help me with lock screen icons.
Why would multi-task not be supported by my phone? This should be a basic capability with smart phones these days.

That IS multitasking. You're in the browser, then you want to switch to for example the S Note app without exiting (as in closing down/quitting) the browser. You press and hold the home button and select S Note in the app list that pops up. Then when you're done you do the same thing to get back to the browser.
If you're talking about dividing the screen in two and having two apps visible at the same time, that's a different thing, it's called multi-window and is done by pressing and holding the back key, then in the list that pops up, drag for example YouTube and drop it on the top of your screen, then do the same thing again to drag some other app to the bottom of the screen.
If you don't have the multi-window feature, you need to update your firmware.

OK. Forget about the whole update thing. I don't think we're talking about the same thing here.
Long pressing home = list of recent apps
Long pressing back = multi-window app selection bar
If you want a list of apps on your phone, you press the home button once to get back to your home screen, and from there open the app drawer.
Is that what you meant?
Sorry for my original post above, I misread what you said. I thought you were talking about the multi Window feature in note 2 which can be activated by long pressing the back button.
The multi tasking is when you long press the home button, correct. You get the list of recently opened apps. That's how it works and how it always worked.
If you want a customizable pad that's let's you switch to other apps on the fly, then I highly recommend SwipePad. You can find it in the market and it's free.

For me
Long pressing Home= list of only recently opened apps (not all the apps on my phone).
Long pressing back= does nothing on my phone when I long press it.
Long press home button gives you a list if recently opened apps, yes. That's how it works. It doesn't, in any version of android, give you a list of all installed apps in your phone. I don't know where you got that idea.
Second, if you want the multi Window feature (which opens when you long press the back button) then check OTA update. If there are no updates for you, then wait for it in the future.

To open any other app on your phone, just press Home button and then run any app you wanted, and if you want switch back to your last app long press Home.
If you still dont get it, than search in youtube for Android multitasking.
Got my G3 today and have been spending a good amount of time setting it up.
I am rooted and have Xposed w/G3 Tweaksbox.
I have a couple of things that still annoy me.
Is there a way to swap the behavior of the recent apps button? I want short press to be menu and long press to be recent apps. I figured out I can add a menu button using G3 Tweaksbox that does exactly that, but I can't remove the stock recent apps button, so I have 4 buttons there and I don't really like that.
When I drag up the recent apps button, I get a little semi circle selector with voicemate, search and quickmemo+ options. I have no intention of ever using voicemail or quickmemo+. Is there a place to change the 3 things that come up there?

Most modern apps use the 3 dot menu button in the app interface and that is why most modern phones tablets do away with dedicated menu button so why would you want to do this?

You'll get used to the new buttons in no time. Just give it a little time and you'll look back at the S3 thinking the button layout was dumb.i had an S3 and S4. Love the G3 and the on screen buttons!

I have the exact thing you want; but I don't want it. I'm rooted with Xposed framework and I randomly rebooted my phone earlier to have it turn back on with a functioning menu button. I looked through all the modules I had downloaded and even booted into safe mode but to no avail. I desperately need help with this.
Sorry that's not what you want, but if anyone knows how to get that, that's why I want.

Sorry for reposting this... Thought I posted in a different thread but I guess I'm wrong. Please don't crucify me
As a long time samsung user, I'd say try without the menu button and see how you get on first.
But you can change the swipe up (and thats a swipe up from anywhere on the navigation bar btw, try it out), using tweaksbo, it's under:
theme > ring pad
And you can either turn it off, or add up to 5 custom apps.
The recent apps button is kinda key to android, it's like asking to remove the home button. Maybe instead of adding a menu button, make double tap on home be the menu button instead? Then you'd still have your three icons, and wouldn't lost out on recent apps, which you should end up using more now it's easier to reach (as opposed to a long press on the home button on samsung).
As noted most apps should use the 3 dot menu button so unless you have an outdated app you use regularly you really shouldn't even want a dedicated menu button. Ask the developer to update the app. It's the way forward and most all modern phones don't have a dedicated menu button, even the S5 replaced the menu button with the multitask button. It you really can't adapt ask the G3 Tweaks xposed developer if he can add a menu button option as the G3 already has the framework to change nav buttons.

Just use the LG Display menu in settings to remove that button and xposed to add other button options. I'd like to know what people use, I'm on a 4 button system. I'll post pics when I get a chance
I somehow managed to change them on a system level if that's even possible. I disabled all modules and even booted into safe mode and they were still there. I'd like to change it back on whatever level it got modified. And the settings app crashes when I try to change the button combination.
The OP did not want to replace the resents button with menu, but only change its behavior: short press - menu, long press- resents. I am very interested in the same setup.

In TweaksBox under theme tweaks, then ring pad. It let's you select one in the free version. In the donate version you can select up to 5 shortcuts in the ring pad or disable it altogether.
settings / display / home touch buttons / button combination
I think they are standard options and not something I've added in. let's you add/remove a button such as the menu button or recent apps. screen is wide so I use 5 buttons.

personally don't use program #1 the ring selector as it is accidentally opening all the time with use of the back button.

Hold the recents and thats your menu button. Thats a default setting i believe. No need for g3 tweakbox unless a longpress isnt what you want. Idk which model you have but the tmobile version doesnt let you add the menu button on the nav bar.

I Googled about this a while ago and found an XDA post describing that you can make some changes to the HW button functionality. It required root and manually edits to a build.prop or similar system file. Unfortunately I no longer have the link to that post but you can do the same searches that I did. I was hoping to modify what they initiated and to add long press functionality. What I found only did some of what I wanted.

I was able to change the left soft key to menu button by editing two files located at /system/usr/keylayout/:
1) Generic.kl
under # samsung
key 254 RECENT APP
Change it to
key 254 MENU
2) gpio-keys.kl
Add this line to it: key 254 MENU
Save both file when you close it. Reboot into custom recovery, wipe cache and dev cache. As for the long press Home key to bring out Recent App, I can't seem to find a solution. I was able use a work around way. I use Nova Launcher, which allows me to assign "Recnt App" as double press on Home key. Hopfully someone will be able to assign long press Home key for it. I guess I will have to use my work around way for now.
