I'm pretty new to installing ROMs and I seem to have screwed something up. I was trying to install CM10 but it didn't work. I wiped system and installed from my sd card and all I got was a black screen. I went to restore from my backup, but somehow it got corrupted. I've tried flashing different ROMs, following youtube tutorials, even tried the ROM Update Utility, but no luck.
I'm out of ideas... any help for a poor, ignorant beginner?
Are u able to get into bootloader?if yes, then again flash cm10 and flash the Hellboy kernel, this step u missed that's why it isn't booting.

I can get into bootloader. I tried as you said and flashed cm10 and then the hellboy kernel. Now it goes to the white htc screen w/ the red lettering... any ideas?
For going into bootloader press and hold power for 10+ seconds and when screen goes black release power and press and hold volume down until u get into bootloader.then select fastboot from the menu and then flash kernel.then go back to bootloader and from there go into recovery and do a full wipe and then flash cm10

Same result... it seems like everything's working when I do it, but when I reboot I just go back to the same screen w/ the red letters.
i'll help you:
these steps are to be made in the EXACT order:
reboot into bootloader, flash Hellboy latest kernel (for GSM if you are GSM, i don't know if this kernel is for CDMA also. If you have CDMA, please flash Super Sick kernel).
after the kernel is installed, use the menu to reboot to your recovery or use adb and type
Code:
fastboot reboot recovery
when you are in the recovery, do these:
factory reset
wipe system
flash the desired rom - in your case CM10
reboot the phone
let it stay for 1 min after the reboot
reboot again in the recovery (use the menu from within the rom to reboot to recovery)
flash gapps package for jellybean;
reboot the phone
the phone will now stay a little longer until it reboots because dalvik will decompile the google apps you've just installed.
congrats, your phone is working
P.S: the line to flash your kernel onto your device, is:
fastboot flash boot boot.img (you have to rename the kernel you downloaded to "boot.img")

Thanks! One hiccup, when I try to do factory reset it fails saying, "unable to mount '/sd-ext'. What does that mean?
Okay, I think I'm getting closer! I guess the twrp recovery I was using was bad or bad for my phone, because I flashed an old version and on reboot it went into loading the rom, I guess from a previous flash. I went back into bootloader, flashed supersick kernel, factory reset, wiped system, went to recovery and flashed the rom. I let it reboot and now it's stuck in a boot loop. I went ahead and put it into recovery and flashed gapps and rebooted. Still in a boot loop. Any ideas now? I really appreciate the help...

All in one tool for HTC one V
so, to start, reboot in recovery by using volume DOWN + Power. Once you are in the bootloader press fastboot and plug the USB cable in the phone ( you will see fastboot will change into "fastboot usb") then open the All in one tool and flash the kernel from the link, flash the recovery from the link *(all in one v interface is prety intuitive you cant get lost). and after you do this follow Icebox's steps into CWM. Factory reset, wipe data, flash room, reboot, flash gapps, reboot. enjoy phone!
thanks to all the devs that created these tools !

did you try to flash the recovery provided in the All In One tool ? there's a recovery image included in the archive there, try to flash that recovery and with that recovery see if you can run the reset to factory

ah sorry, i did not know you are primoC, in allinone you also have a CDMA recovery, i dont know about the CDMA kernel but everyone talks about supersick so yeah, try to research what version of supersick you need for CM10 and flash that one
Well, I seem to just be going in circles... nothing I've tried has worked.. still getting boot loop. Flashing supersick and CM10 hasn't worked. I've tried it with cwm and twrp. My factory reset still says failed to mount sd-ext.
I dont know how much different is primoc from primou, but i remember i had a reset to factory in the bootloader aswell. and, as i said, i had the problem with mounting but i rebooted recovery and did each task (reset, flash) in a new recovery boot. i am brainstorming here but i am out of ideas, we are missing something here clearly, but as long as you have acces to the bootloader hope is not lost

as i have seen many threads stating that in the custom recovery one cannot charge the phone, so i thought why not use the stock recovery after flashing the rom!!
1. i flashed a custom rom in the custom recovery
2. after the first boot, i went to the hboot and flashed the stock recovery
3.restarted the phone and booted back to the custom rom, no reboots, no hangs what so ever, rom booted normally
4. switched my phone off from the bootloader to check if it works and voila it is charging !!!!
5.to flash a custom Rom just flash a custom recovery in the fastboot
i do know that you have to flash a recovery every time you flash a custom rom but till a proper fix is found it is better to do this than depend on your luck
Edit: (credits to cpv5 for this info)Make sure you don't go to recovery when you're on stock recovery as it will wipe everything on your phone & virtual sdcard and you will be back to setup screen again.

even better is that once you have done the OTA update to 1.28 you get the new Hboot which can boot properly so you never have to replace the stock recovery. just fastboot boot recovery.img if you need to change rom or nandroid
I dont think that the 1.28 Hboot has fixed the fastboot boot commands...
You can fastboot boot a recovery? not just a boot.img?

Very interesting, seems to be working for recoveries here as well (s-on unlocked hboot 0.94).
I'm really interested if this works properly for zImages as well. I thought PaulOBrein was working with htc for a solution for this "fastboot boot" though? Maybe some parts ain't working?
This is a great tip, thanks!

Because the stock recovery doesn't have menu like the CWM recovery, so once you choose recovery, the recovery process will run. Not like the CWM recovery, you need to choose which function to run.
So two things can happens when you go to recovery when you're on stock recovery:
1) the recovery will runs and wipe everything on your phone (I tested this)
2) the recovery will runs and there is error where you see the phone logo with red triangle, then you need to shutdown and restart to your current ROM.

1 .Flash the kernel for cm9 by-
Boot to bootloader> Fastboot> fastboot flash boot boot.img> fastboot erase cache.
2. In recovery, wipe cache. Flash cm9 by selecting install zip from sd card.
Is this right? Let me know. And, also, what do i need to wipe exacxtly?? Cache, and __?
Thanks!
I flashed cm9 for the PrimoC (Virgin Mobile) One V yesterday, and this is what I did.
Get to recovery
Wipe data
Wipe cache
flash ROM zip in recovery
flash GApps in recovery (if applicable)
Boot into fastboot (Don't boot normally)
Flash the boot image via computer/command prompt (Google "flashing boot image one v" and there should be a complete tutorial somewhere in results)
Boot normally.
Done.
If this doesn't work/things are broken, restore to a backup via recovery, wipe data/cache, flash the ROM and GApps, but DON'T flash the boot.img via computer, and boot normally. I had to do that once, don't know the reason why the boot.img provided separately didn't work.
Hopefully this helped!
boot into bootloader
then select fasboot
then type fastboot flash boot boot. img
then head towards recovery
wipe cache/data/dalvik
then select choose zip from sd card
navigate to the file select it then press yes when prompted
thats it
reboot
can't explain better than this

you will find Here....
all of you are doing this thing wrong and then you are complaining that the phone doesn't boot...
INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO PROPERLY FLASH A ROM:
1. FLASH THE KERNEL! (you know how);
2. The phone will now boot and if you had stock, there is a chance that it will stay on Htc Logo screen;
3. Now you need to go into the recovery, either by pressing Vol down + Power to go into the bootloader and from there to recovery OR by connecting your phone to your pc and in CMD type:
Code:
adb shell
reboot recovery
4. You've flashed the kernel correctly, now you need to wipe everything.
5. Wipe:
Code:
Cache
Dalvik-Cache
Factory Reset (if you use TWRP)
System
6. Now choose to install your desired rom.
7. After it is finished, reboot your phone. If it boots correctly, reboot your phone into recovery once more.
8. Wipe DALVIK-CACHE.
9. Flash GAPPS.
10. Reboot and enjoy.
Flashing the rom + gapps and then kernel is like making a car without the engine and then after the car looks cool and it's done, you put the engine on the top of it.
I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm trying to flash "codename android jellybean" to my primoc one v.
I have it unlocked and rooted, thanks to xda. Where I get stuck is trying to flash the above ROM to the phone. I have put the ROM, gapps, and jellyboot5 into my SD card, then flashed those zips from clockworkmod recovery. I have put the boot.img I copied from the jellyboot5 folder into my fastboot folder on my PC.
My problem is that when I try to restart the phone from clockworkmod recovery into bootloader, the phone does the nexus animation, then goes straight back into clockworkmod recovery. I can't get to the white screen that gives me the option of choosing fastboot so that I can, in command prompt on my pc, flash the boot img.
I know I must be doing something wrong somewhere.
Hold and keep the power button for 10 second till the screen turns of and as soon as it turns off hold and keep the volume button.... to use see the fast boot...... other way is press and keep the power button and the volume down button for 10 to15 second

I was having the same problem I just re started and full wiped and then flashed everything then I used the tool kit to flash the boot.IMG I used to use my cmd prompt but I realized it wasnt even the right boot.IMG flashing as soon as I did the tool kit it worked. Good luck, trust me it did the same thing

2) flashed GAPPS
3) flashed jellyboot
4) tried to restart into bootloader (but phone goes right back to clockworkmod recovery)
Did I make a mistake somewhere?
If you have ADB set up on your PC, From recovery plug in your phone bring up ADB. Type adb reboot bootloader
Don't try the button thing people have bricked there phone doing the button thing for too long.

Hey Im confused at what stage your at..
if i understand it you've flashed CM10, but *didn't* flash the CM10 compatible kernel... The Stock Kernel isnt compatible with CM.
If this happens one of two things will occur
1. The phone will hang on boot (aka softbrick)
2. the phone will go directly into CWM
I hit the same problem when I first flashed roms on the one v.
You basically need to reboot into the boot loader (flashboot) and flash the new (CM9) compatible kernel from there.
Alterntively if you get totally stuck use the "stockRRU" and recover your phone using that, (see thread on this)

That does sound like what my phone is doing. Initially it went straight into CWM, then it got further but would just hang on the colored "X" nexus animation.
At this point I tried to restore my stock nandroid, but even that wouldn't work, with the phone never getting off the "HTC quietly brilliant beats audio" screen.
As for flashing the correct kernel, was jellyboot5 not the kernel for this CM10 rom? And when I try to restore my stock (ICS) nandroid, does it matter that I've tried to flash a JB kernel, or is the stock kernel also restored?
Thanks for any help.

All right, tried that, phone is still endless stuck in the nexus colored X animation. Will wait another few minutes and then freaking go back to stock using RUU.
Edit: Holy s***, dude, you saved me. I was about to chuck the phone against a wall, until I read that you just did the entire process again, from wiping to flashing the rom, to flashing the boot image using the all-in-one tool. That did the trick. For about ten minutes I was seriously contemplating getting an iPhone. That's how dire this was. Thanks man!!!!!
dude,
ok I'll caveat this by saying I live in the uk so I have a GSM (primoU) not CDMA so I take no responsibility if this goes wrong.,...,
I'm guessing your using the rom in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927794
Reading the thread, here's what I think you should do the following
(Im assuming you've already flashed clockwork mod recovery)
Assumptions
1. You have already unlocked the phone using the HTC unlock procedure
2. You have already installed Clockworkmod recovery
Download the following :
- One All in one toolkit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676686
- ROM from http://www.mediafire.com/?ldhwd8vki17mbfe
- Kernel from http://goo.im/devs/simonsimons34/primoc/kernels/JellyBoot5.zip
- CM10 compatible GoogleApps (GAPS) http://cyano-rob.tuennerhoff-edv.de/GAPPS/gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
steps
1. Copy the ROM onto the microSD, in a folder called say "rom", do not unzip it
2. Switch phone off by pressing the power down button for 10 seconds or so
3. Disconnect USB from the PC
4. Enter fastboot by first pressing and holding "volume - " and then pressing power button once and keep pressing "Volume - "
>>>>>> DO NOT PRESS "VOLUME+" <<< Important
The phone should reboot into fastboot
5. connect USB to PC
6. select fastboot (using vol +/- and press power)
Fastboot should now say "fastboot USB"
8. Unzip/install the All-In-One toolkit somewhere.. We wont be using it here, but installing this gives you fastboot/adb etc
9. Unzip the kernel from the kernel file, you should have a boot.img and put it in the kernels directory
9. cd <DirectoryOfAllInOneToolKit>/Data directory
10. Issue "fastboot flash boot Kernels/boot.img"
This should say something like sending boot.img, and then flashing boot.img..
11. Reboot phone with fastboot reboot-bootloader
This will bring you back to the fastboot screen, select recovery and that should bring you to Clockwork mod
12. select "install zip from zipfile", then choose-zip from SD Card, select your rom (zipfile) and say flash.
(hint : vol +/- go up down, and power selects)
13. When this is done, then install GAPS in the same way..
14. Finally you need to make sure all the caches and data is wiped. to do this enter the wipe menu and issue "factory reset/wipe data" and wipe dalvik cache
15. Finally select reboot and smile
That should be it! I O
Oh before i forget, the AllInOne package is cool, but as your in a semi brick situation and that all in one requires adb support Im not sure what it will do hence detailing the steps manually above.. For newbies this tutorial is still valid, but you need to unlock your phone first and install CWM . If you are coming from stock I would recommend using the all in one tool (above) GUI as it saves typing!
Hope this helps

ok I'll caveat this by saying I live in the uk so I have a GSM (primoU) not CDMA so I take no responsibility if this goes wrong.,...,
I'm guessing your using the rom in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927794
Reading the thread, here's what I think you should do the following
(Im assuming you've already flashed clockwork mod recovery)
Download the following :
- One All in one toolkit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676686
- ROM from http://www.mediafire.com/?ldhwd8vki17mbfe
- Kernel from http://goo.im/devs/simonsimons34/primoc/kernels/JellyBoot5.zip
- CM10 compatible GoogleApps (GAPS) http://cyano-rob.tuennerhoff-edv.de/GAPPS/gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
steps
1. Copy the ROM onto the microSD, in a folder called say "rom", do not unzip it
2. Switch phone off by pressing the power down button for 10 seconds or so
3. Disconnect USB from the PC
4. Enter fastboot by first pressing and holding "volume - " and then pressing power button once and keep pressing "Volume - "
>>>>>> DO NOT PRESS "VOLUME+" <<< Important
The phone should reboot into fastboot
5. connect USB to PC
6. select fastboot (using vol +/- and press power)
Fastboot should now say "fastboot USB"
8. Unzip/install the All-In-One toolkit somewhere.. We wont be using it here, but installing this gives you fastboot/adb etc
9. Unzip the kernel from the kernel file, you should have a boot.img and put it in the kernels directory
9. cd <DirectoryOfAllInOneToolKit>/Data directory
10. Issue "fastboot flash boot Kernels/boot.img"
This should say something like sending boot.img, and then flashing boot.img..
11. Reboot phone with fastboot reboot-bootloader
This will bring you back to the fastboot screen, select recovery and that should bring you to Clockwork mod
12. select "install zip from zipfile", then choose-zip from SD Card, select your rom (zipfile) and say flash.
(hint : vol +/- go up down, and power selects)
13. When this is done, then install GAPS in the same way..
14. Finally select reboot
That should be it! I O
Oh before i forget, the AllInOne package is cool, but as your in a semi brick situation and that all in one requires adb support Im not sure what it will do hence detailing the steps manually above..
Hope this helps

I guess so, however you would need to check each different rom to be sure..
Also cybervibin is right, before rebooting the phone it is recommended to
- go into clockworkmod recovery, wipe menu and wipe data/factory reset
- also wipe dalvik cache

Well...same problem, this time I followed the instructions step by step!
1. Download ROM and gapps and put them in SD card's root.
2. Download jmz primoc kernel and place it in fastboot or platform-tools folder and rename it to boot.img.
3. Boot phone into bootloader. Select fastboot. Connect it to PC. It should say fastboot usb.
4. Flash boot.img(the kernel) using command 'fastboot flash boot boot.img'.
5. Enter recovery from bootloader and first do a full wipe factory reset, erase cache, erase dalvik cache.
6. Then flash rom. Boot into ROM and then again boot into recovery and flash gapps.

Well, I actually just got done trying to use a CDMA converter...didn't work. Im in the process of using your method. But will it boot without Gapps installed?
Just tried your method, and it gets stuck on a boot loop, I am able to get into bootloader and recovery fine, but when I try to boot, it loops.

You know what, Ill make a video of me doing this, so you can tell me if I did something wrong.
Now, it will get to the lock screen, and I can unlock fine, but after a few seconds it will crash and reboot?

Umm, how do I go back to bootloader without rebooting, and do you have any download links for any of these?

... why are you doing things to your phone when you obviously don't know anything. When in recovery after your done hold power for until it shuts off and then immediately hold down the down vol button (not the vol up!!) And for roms go to CDMA dev if your CDMA and android dev/ROM dev if your gsm

Just tried that...and it doesnt boot now...
I tried installing a custom rom today and I think I messed up really bad, because my phone does not get pass the boot screen and I cannot enter the recovery setting. I think I messed up after entering
fastboot flash boot boot.img
in the command prompt and restarting because I forgot to put the rom zip on my phone. Since then I could not get pass the boot screen and even tried running a backup using CWM, but it didn't help. I then managed to mount my phone and put the rom onto it and installed it, but again it didn't help.
Now my phone can only enter the bootloader, I select hboot and fastboot, but nothing else works. Everytime I select recovery or factory reset I get the htc boot screen and it gets stuck. Does anyone have any solutions?
Thanks
did u backup your phone rom???
if you did u can go to recovery and restore it
and never try to change rom again trust me in that
otherwise i can't help bcuz i did the same mistake
I did make a backup, but like I said I can't enter recovery anymore, so I can't load the backup.
Thanks for trying to help anyway though.
fastboot erase cache
Often fixes recovery problems.

Still not working, thanks anyway.
What HBOOT version do you have and what custom ROM are you trying to install?
edit: you didn't need to restart after changing boot.img cause in Recovery you can just go Advanced and then mount USB and copy the ROM or whatever files you want that way.

I have hboot 1.39.0000 and I was trying to install the latest cyanogenmod cm-10-20130106-NIGHTLY-endeavoru.
Yeah I realized this after I restarted and did it get the zip onto the phone. I think I installed it, but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen
UPDATE: Okay I've managed to install CWM recovery, so I think I'm making progress
You had to flash CWM again? Odd..
Anyway, if you happen to encounter the same problem with CM10 I suggest you try some other custom ROM.. Just make sure you "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and then "fastboot erase cache", and if for some reason you decide to format the sdcard or simply forget to add in the ROM zip, you can do it in Recovery when you mount the device as USB under Advanced options. Best of luck!

Yeah CWM didn't load up, but I got it working again. Well it seems I'm back to getting the rom to install and being stuck at the boot screen again, so maybe I just need to use a different rom. Thanks for the help though
Okay, I've tried installing a few roms, but unfortunately I'm still on the boot screen, I can sometimes even reach the cyanogenmod boot screen, but get stuck there. I've read that this might be kernel issue, does anyone have any ideas?
CM10 requires a special boot.img for newer hboots. Check post 9308 in CM10 thread.
