True it's an app, but for many people out there, it's basic functionality. I know that just like missing tasks and reminders as well as the lack of full Outlook synchronisation in Android, this lack of functionality has been a huge bone of contention for many who have taken the leap to Android only to find that they have been left up the creek without a paddle. For all it's hyped up "amazingness" how on earth can anybody release an OS with so many gaping holes, the lack of basic functionality which other OS's have as standard??
Anyway, I'm trying to spread the word. Especially because I see many people/admins have this strange idea of trying to censor this news (because it's a closed beta. - Who cares?).
Strange how there were some cryptic messages by a sysadmin on the Coreplayer forums about people keeping to the forum rules when there were no posts showing which appeared to have broken any rules! Check out pages five and six here http: // forum.corecodec .com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2885

And I can understand why some might want to censor this "news" because it borders on warez! Yes, I'm being hypocritical because I've downloaded and installed this player, but the moment it gets onto the market I will buy it.

At the risk of repeating myself, I, and I am certain many others out there, consider AVI playback to be basic functionality, it's not just "another app" to do some silly thing which the world managed perfectly well without before it came along. Therefore I posted it in the general subforum and pointed to another subforum which had decent info.
As to the goings on on other forums, I was referring to a good number here on XDA too! As you said, search.
And I will buy it too!! This program ROCKS!
Well I for one am glad you posted this here, cos now there is an unwatermarked version available and I didn't know that.

Thanks for posting it. The app is very buggy yet, certainly not fit for anything past Alpha. It does not even play 3GP and MP4 vids that the stock player does with ease. Not even what the phone itself records. Massive frame drops, stuttering and audio out of sync on even 600Kbps vids. It does play low bitrate DivX AVIs successfully though. I'll try MKVs and XviD soon. Currently, the latest Yxplayer is far ahead, yet.

I am using it for playing AVI Xvid files of TV episodes etc (from you know where) and it plays them all without a hitch.
No bugs, no nothing. It just works!
Perhaps they could allow it to remember the last folder you opened though!
BTW, does anybody know why it needs access rights to the internet when all it does is play video files?

Agreed i was confused aswell. I've played standard HDTV avis fine with ROCK, and if i used YXPLAYER it would play with lots of stuttering
I happy for ROCK to only play DIVX i dont mind it cant do MP4s has i only ever use DIVX.
It plays flv files perfectly too.. I tested it with a bunch of stuff I ripped from xvideos with downloadhelper for firefox
It also plays Xvid just the same as divX.. I've not tried mkv yet
If you want to play mp4/3gp then use the stock player you strange person <rolleyes>
Thanks op for posting this. I say that because when I get home of an evening I have about half an hour to check my emails, news, and about 3 or 4 forums including this one. A post in the apps forum may well have got missed. My fault entirely I hasten to add. The fact remains though I would have missed it.

So you've only tested XviD AVIs?
What bitrate, resolution, FPS, ratio, audio format are those files using?
Stock ROM?
To be really honest, you'd need to post more details on the files you've played. That's why I mentioned the vid properties. That's exactly how it is with any +650Kbps vid that has action/movement on mine after comparing it to how they play in Act 1.

Hi I am using a stock Orange Rom.
Video properties:
624 x 352
Bit rate 124kbs
Audio MPEG Layer-3
23 fps
Data 1127kbs
Video sample size 12 bit
video compression FFDS
I have tested several .avis which I get from you know where. 350MB Tv shows. They all worked flawlessly.

I can confirm two aspects of what they are saying. It plays ~640*270 ~1,100Kbps XviD and DivX movies using the AVI container, with MP3 and PCM audio, flawlessly. I've just finished two full movies, one of which is 1.7GB, no problem at all. I haven't tried bigger, better resolutions and bitrates yet.
It can also play low bitrate/resolution MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and WMV vids properly.
However, it cannot run H.264 vids above ~400Kbps at such resolutions and greater without the earlier mentioned problems.
Test these .MP4 and .3GP container H.264 and MPEG-4 vids for yourself. Thanks goes to those who have uploaded them, only one is my own.
Run them on your choice of vid apps, the stock app and the Rock player. Do they play and sound perfect on the Rock player? Do they run at the correct frame rates?

One is a 720p vid shot by the Desire itself. All of them play flawlessly on Meridian, Act 1, etc, but not so in this app. It's missing H.264 acceleration by the looks of it.

So I love the EVO, and so far I love Android, except I can't seem to figure out how to play videos on it. Sure I can view Youtube, youporn etc , but I can't seem to find a player that will play simple MPEGs. I have downloaded and tried at least 5 different video/media players from the Market, and none of them will play MPEGs correctly. Some of them will give me sound, but none will give me video. I have tried a couple of different video files that I know work on my desktop.
Am I doing something wrong? I am coming from Windows Mobile with Windows Media Player that played just about anything I threw at it. I can't imagine such a wonderful piece of hardware coupled with what seems to be an awesome OS can't do MPG/AVI.
Note: I am currently rooted+nand+bugless beast 0.3 Although I was having this trouble before I had the custom rom or NAND unlocked.

Curious, have you tried Meridian? I don't really play a lot of videos on my phone, but Meridian has come through on everything so far for me. YMMV
Rock player is the best video player I have ever used on Android. I can play all my divx format movies without conversion and always get 25-30 fps.
The player is in private beta now and should be released soon.

It's just that I received an e-mail MPG of my nephew riding his bike without training wheels and would like to see it that's all. Not sure what H.264 decoding is or if it has my nephew riding his bike without training wheels or not. I should go search for that thanks.
I just figure I should be able to view most any file attachment that comes into me these days.
H.264 is the video encoder for MP4's. Basically, if you used a program to convert your videos to MP4 videos, you would be able to play them without a problem. The phone has hardware acceleration for H.264, so it doesn't use as much processor/battery to play vs. other formats that have to be software decoded. Handbrake works good for me, though I can't remember what file types you can put into it.

The reason why you cannot play those mpg files is simple. Android doesn't support them out of the box. You need to turn to third-party video players which can do it.
Rock Demo Player is one (only one?) such video player.
You can try to use the third-party video player, I read an article is about the top 5 video player apps in Android Market. Maybe it is helpful to you.

I use MX Player. I've only had a problem with AVI files that encode the audio with AAC.

I used Moboplayer most of time, it seems that MX Player also have so much supporter. Maybe I should try it later.
Hello everyone,
I have an issue that is driving me CRAZY, and I hope some of you are having the same issue...or at least suggestions for how to fix it. I am running the new Android 2.2 update on my Evo. (It's just the normal, plain software from Sprint/HTC...nothing custom, none of that root stuff...just regular).
I always keep a few gigabytes of music (in WMA format) on my SD card. I noticed that after the update, the HTC Music player would no longer recognize (and sort) the music by Artist or Composer. The only things it could identify about each file were the Title, Album, and Genre. I miss the option of browsing through my music by Artist and/or Composer. This was not a problem with Android 2.1, but it is now. I even tried deleting all the music from my SD card and re-syncing it from my PC...same result. I also tried music from a different PC...same result.
So here's what I discovered this morning: If I convert my WMA files to MP3s, then the music player works just as before!! It recognizes all the ID3 tags within each file. This is a big problem for me. First of all, my music library is nearly 40 GB in size, and I do not want to have to convert EVERYTHING to MP3 before I sync. This is tedious and unnecessary. Secondly, the original specs/documentation of the HTC Evo state that it supports the WMA file format. I made sure of that before purchasing, because it was one of the big factors for me in making the decision to switch to Sprint and the Evo.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to solve this problem? I'm about to call HTC now and complain. Thanks.
Why are you so attached to WMA? IME/IMHO it's not a very good format because the quality of the mp3 format is a little better plus the DRM that gets embeded in the tracks. Every track that I have *ahem* acquired or even recorded myself has time bombed on me at some point. I should be able to play the music I record at any time!

Don't take what I said too personally. I'm just pissed off at Microsoft. That said, I do not know what is causing your files not be played back properly as I do not have any to test.
Just a guess but, perhaps the new player in froyo doesn't read id3 tags from wma files correctly.

Well, that wasn't the purpose of this post, but since you asked...
I've been ripping my CDs to my hard drive for about 10 years now. Windows Media Player made it sooo easy to organize my music library. Way back in the day, you could only rip to WAV or different varieties of WMA. To rip to mp3, I would have had to use a different program, or purchase a plug-in for Windows Media Player. Only in the last few versions has Windows Media Player had the "rip to mp3" option built-in for free.
When I originally started my collection, I read about the differences between WMA and mp3. I got the understanding that the two formats essentially offered the same quality and features, but WMA generally used about half the file size for the same bitrate. So I chose WMA and stuck with it all this time.
Even when I buy music from Amazon or iTunes, I've gotten in the habit of converting it to WMA...just for consistency.
I just got off the phone with HTC, who says they haven't heard of this issue before. I was advised to perform a factory reset. But if I can't resolve the issue soon, I'm considering just converting every piece of music I have to mp3. (Sigh). But at nearly 40 GB, and various bitrates, who knows how long that could take!? (Sighing again). I wonder what program could handle that amount of music all at once. And I pray it won't screw up all the ID3 tags and the ratings I've so carefully given.

I have a couple of WMA files on my SD card. They have always been listed under "Unknown Artist" along with a few mp3's.
when I click on unknown artist, the files show up listed under their correct names. When I click on the wma files (both by the same artist), they expand into individual file names.
After updating to 2.2 nothing has changed. Everything works normally. That would suggest HTC's advice may work for you.
On another note, don't you love it when you post a question, and the first response is, "I don't know how to help, but I don't like that kind of file anyway, and neither should you!!!
Hmmm...and your WMA files were never fully recognized? Not even on Android 2.1? Interesting. I guess I'll attempt a hard reset tonight, or maybe tomorrow.

I had the exact same issue and can report that a hard reset had no effect. I'll be looking to convert my library to mp3 as well. Froyo has its quirks.

Here's an idea: Go into a Sprint store with your Mini SD chip and see if they'll put in in another Android phone. See if it exhibits the same issue.

Funny, my wife is using the rooted stock froyo, first leaked build and all wma look fine with embedded art using HTC player. I am using cyanogen latest nightly and it still can't read wma tags at all. But I do like playing with the new DSP settings--worth the switch. As a workaround I converted the wma to mp4 and they read just fine.
I'm surprised anyone had success with wma on any version of android. For me, on 2.1, wma files wouldn't play (but a few DID, which confounds me to no end). Now on rooted 2.2, I experience the same behavior. Just for fun, I used astro and simply renamed the file type of some wmas to .mp3. Surprisingly, it seemed to work. I thought I was on to something. Then I tries that with some Audioslave songs. No worky. So probably the ones I did 'get to work', were some of the few that for no discernible reason, to me, already worked.
I would like to hear more about this issue, actually.
Its a problem in Froyo with both WMA and AAC encoded files. Reported in Google Code, so please go there, sign in to google, then star the issue so it gets some attention:

Alright friends, I have a few avi's that my dinc throws the drm play sign up on. This only happens on certain roms. Is there something I can do to bypass this. They are legit copies of my movies, just don't want to go through the whole conversion process again. Thanks.....

Thanks for answering, I have come across it on incrom in the past, and now with optimized shift. It standard player this time. Other 3rd party apps have no problem. The videos are from dvd. Converted to avi through dvd decryptor, then through autogk. I didn't even know that avi's contained drm.? It's not killing me, just curious, and figure the big brains here could dummy it down for me a little. (the movie is Zack and MIRI make a porno)
How do I check what kind of drm? It plays, just with the play symbol in the middle of the window. Thanks again....
Edit: does this depend on the DRM protected file apk? Weird how it pops up for me from time to time. Even had it happen when streaming orb. Not to bump this, but please, anyone experience this before.

i've never really watched videos on my phones (mostly due to screen size etc) but i figure now that I have the Galaxy Nexus i could watch a few things on it..
What would be the best video format to convert things to? I dropped an avi of a tv program onto it and it worked but it lagged a bit..
I just converted something to an HD mp4 using Permute for Mac, it bumped the filesize up about 100mb but tested it and it runs smooth in QuickPic or PlayerPro but when trying to use the built in video player (to get the true full screen) it plays for a second, stutters, then says it can't be played.. :S
has anyone managed to get moboplayer working ? says i need an arm7 neon codec - found that on their site ... followed instructions but it still wont work
Video playback may be a bit iffy until the apps are updated; one of the Diceplayer mob posted saying that it now supports HD playback for .mkv. They didn't mention .avi but that generally needs less resources than .avi so you could try your avi in Diceplayer.
The general trend in open source video development is towards .mkv, I'm trying that first.
I'd be surprised if much works well right out of the gate. The true beta is when the masses begin tinkering

I've got the same question. And I don't mean what other player can I download to play movies. I mean what format can I encode videos in to get them to play in the native player. I did find the article below. I have tried each of these formats with no luck. Anyone know why Android can't play a movie out of the box?

pretty much if you use a baseline .mp4 format you will be fine
basically:
h.264 video
LC-AAC audio
no CABAC
and you should be fine up to 1080p these settings work on all my android devices
just set mpeg 4 level 4 and it should take care of it by itself

I have tired those settings on several encoders (handbrake, Adobe Media Encoder, Magic DVD ripper) and still no success. What software are you using to encode? and have you tried the movies on the galaxy nexus? Because I have never had a problem on any other Android devices. Just this one.

vplayer has played everything ive thrown at it so far. the built in movie player seems very limited.

I appreciate the feedback but I have two problems with this particular advice.
1 - Have you seen the permissions for that player? Why would a video player need access to my "Phone calls - Read phone status and identity" and "Your personal information - Read sensitive log data"? Really?
2 - Why the hell can't this phone play videos out of the box. <rant>I have, as I suspect a lot of us here do, a fair few friends that I would call iPhone fanboys. One of the biggest gripes I always hear about android is that every time you run into a problem on Android is the best answer is to root your phone and install cyanogen, or go get xxxx app and that will take care of it, or you should have bought this phone instead. So I get this phone and think that finally Android is going to hit the main stream and I can't even play a movie. WTF!</rant>
Like I said, I appreciate the feedback but I am still looking for a way to play a video in the default video player.

no i have not tried on a galaxy nexus yet as that one week delay sim free means i wont be able to have mine in my hands untill at least next week :\,
i use mediacoder to encode videos, cant speak for the GN but ive used it for my xoom, nexus S, desire hd, htc legend and SGS 2 in the past (however SGS2 supported all codecs quite nicely anyway)
according to the android dev site the supported video list hasnt changed so this is quite strange.

FYI...I got my GN SIM free from Phones 4U. It was not easy though. I went in to a few stores before finding one that would sell it to me SIM free. And I think that I happened upon the manager at the store that did sell it to me. What makes it even better is that I am in the UK on business for a few months and so I can get the VAT back on my way out. Which makes it nearly 90 quid cheaper.

Format factory works and it's easy as to use.
Format factory does seem to work and is a little easier to use. Thanks. And just in time too because Mediacoder was having some trouble iwth a few of the vids I had.
