[Q] Is the notification LED on your Note II working reliably? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Being an ex-Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2 owner I was happy to finally have a notification LED on my phone. However I have found that the behaviour of the LED just isn't reliable.
When I got it a week ago it worked, then it stopped working for no reason, then it worked again, then stopped, now it works sometimes but most it just doesn't. I find the behaviour to be quite erratic and difficult to diagnose.
I tried using both the stock LED code and LightFlow (exclusively and at the same time) but both exhibit the same erratic sometimes-works-sometimes-doesn't behaviour. Totally unreliable.
This has happened with my original 4.1.1 ROM (stock, unrooted), then 4.1.1 rooted, then 4.1.2 stock unrooted and now I'm on stock 4.1.2 rooted. No different. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't.
Is your Note II notification LED reliable? Searching got me some threads on LED trouble (both for SGS3 and Note2), but no conclusive reasons/solutions.
PS: I checked the LED with the factory test code and it works perfectly there - it does not appear to be a hardware issue at all.

It works for me all time. Very reliable I'd say. And I'm a person who hates any sort of non working things. Like Smart Alert, which has literally stopped working for me. And like you, it works each time perfectly on test mode.
PS: I switched to LED Light Manager last week, but that doesn't mean the stock LED didn't work.
Swyped from my GT-N7100

My native LED works fine but it's pretty limited. Better than nothing. I like Lightflow the best but it interferes with/invokes the Note II Accessibility functions so I removed it until they are worked out. Light Manager seems to work but the only thing I don't like about it, that Lightflow has, is the ability to flash network status when you have good signal (i.e. green flashing LED when you have signal; Lightflow does but LM does not have this function).
Ideally I just want an LED manager to mimic Blackberry, flashing green in standby mode, and flashing red when "something comes in". I have no need for 18,000,000 color combos.
Cheers

I haven't had any issues with my LED notification light. It has always worked for me. I don't use any apps though. The most I do is go into an app and select the color I want the LED to flash. But that's already built into the app. But they stay on while my screen is off. If it's flashing, and I turn on my screen, then I believe they disappear. But to be honest, if it flashes and I turn on my phone, I usually check the messages, reply to them, or clear them / swipe them away.

So despite all the problem threads I found, 3 users with no issues at all, interesting.
I can understand that as for the first days the LED behaviour was accurate, but since then it has been quite randomish and I have been unable to find a pattern. Somtimes I have a missing call and have the LED blinking, sometimes I have a missing call and nothing happens. There is no easy difference between the two situations.
I will try LED Light Manager, never used it and one more shot won't hurt. Meanwhile I was starting to think that the LED unreliability was the reason why 99.9% of all Galaxy Note II covers designers don't bother to add a LED cutout.

Mine has been reliable so far.

The notification LED on my Note II has been very reliable, unlike on a past HTC phone where the light would either not blink or would not stop blinking.

All of my led are working fine
n7100
omega rom v10 perseus kernel 31
hit thanks its free anyway

It's working properly on my N7100 also.
No problems at all.
Now for the solution:-
1.You can try reflashing a rom (stock or custom)
2. Install ths.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koo.lightmanager&feature=search_result
This should override the stock LED functions and may improve it's performance.

No issues what so ever with the LED, I've never used custom roms/kernels on my phone though.

I'm even more puzzled than before now, as I cannot find a reason for the erratic behaviour on my phone.

Did you read my post and try my method?

Yes, I already had Light Manager. I also have LightFlow, but first started using teh samsung notifications only.
I find the same pattern in them all... sometimes teh notifications trigger/clean properly, some times they don't. Usually they don't.
I tried several combinations, Samsung LED app only, Lightflow off, Light Manager off, etc. And the same remains. The behaviour is erratic. Seen other users complaining about this in other foruns, but since it seems tricky to reproduce, no solution is clear.
I'l on 4.1.2 stock (bot rooted now) and besides de rooting my phone has almost no customization at all. Going for a full wipe/reset seems overkill, as it appeared to have done nother with other users.
Still trying to find out if this is a documented bug or just something specific to certain OS/apps.

I've noticed with Facebook messenger that if I get a message right as the screen goes dark and messenger was the last program on the screen, the LED will not light up. The phone must think I already checked it in that case. Other then that, it works as it should.

Mine works aswell

Mine never fails to notify me of events, but sometimes it lights dimly with no reason.
I'am still wondering why ...

The LED's glow bright if the ambient lighting is powerful, like in Sunlight or in a well lit room, and it'll be on the darker (dimmer) side when the ambient lighting is dark, like in a dark or low lit room.

After about 3 weeks with the Note 2 I am still puzzled by the LED. I have days when it works perfectly (like you guys are reporting) but others when it just stops triggering and so far I found no pattern. Some code related to it must be really flaky. But when it works, it usually works fine...

[Q] random vibration pulses after DK28 update

I just updated to DK28 using the update.zip over stock software (no root) and on top of various new features and new bugs, I've noticed a strange new behavior.
At least several times per hour, my phone will give a quick vibration pulse, then maybe a second or two later will give two (or sometimes three) real quick pulses. I have no idea why it's doing this and whether it means something or not. Anyone know?
I can't seem to correlate the behavior to anything in particular the phone is doing at the time. It happens with the phone sleeping, and it does it while I'm using it. It happens when I'm on the home screen, when I'm reading web articles, when I'm playing with other apps, when it's on the charger, when it's off...

I got that too, plus lag and other bugs when first went to 2.2 (rooted 2.1 and used update.zip). Did you wipe when you updated? I didn't so it was acting weird... Plus the GPS didn't work so I did the Odin thing and now it works fantastic.

No. I probably should.
I just wondered whether these little vibration pulses were meant to indicate something, or whether they're just a bug.
happens when an app crashes
My vibration was related to turning on the WIFI became very unstable. The DK28 I had came with clockwork mod so I did a recovery to Epic Experence 2.0.7 chosing the recover form a specific zip file I had copied to my SDcard. Fixed the vibration problem and my USB connection then agin worked on my Windows 7 laptop

USA TMobile G2, Keyboard Backlight Stopped Working After OTA Upgrade to 2.3.4

Hi Everyone!
So i got the OTA 2.3.4 upgrade for my TMobile G2 a couple of weeks ago and my keyboard backlight stopped working, I have seen many threads about this all over the internet (and very few actually here) but no one knows a solution to the issue yet. I was hoping someone can guide me here how to fix this. I know ultimate way to fix is to downgrade to Froyo.
I also have all the other issues that came with this "HTC screwed with" version of Android like constantly forceclosing with the dumb Tell HTC button, navigation icon disappearing when GPS chip is off, typing E sends me to short cuts, etc. The only real problem is the keyboard backlight because it has made the phone useless to me.
Thanks!
USA TMobile G2
Never Rooted.
OTA Upgrade to Android 2.3.4 with stupid Tell HTC app the only HTC footprint in the phone which is continuously freezinfg and forceclosing my apps.
Kernel 2.6.35.10-g96de068
Build Number 2.15.531.3 CL82286
Baseband 12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3
Without knowing too much about this particular issue (haven't heard of it personally) I'd say to do a factory reset, and/or dive into your auto backlight settings. The keyboard lights are tied to ambient light sensor.
Are you opposed to rooting? Sounds like you're having a lot of problems with your stock setup...

Actually the light sensor doesn't work either, I put the phone to my ear and my cheek starts dialing becuz the screen doesn't turn off, aft a minute it does automatically though. Then I pull the phone away from my face to hang up or dial an extenstion and the screen is off, I have to push the power button and slide to unlock.
I had rooted my old G1 and I had so many issues and speed problems that I figured I don't do that to this phone, it worked almost perfect with Froyo with a few issues but this one without keyboard backlit is 100% useless.
There is no setting in my setup for keyboard backlight or light sensor.
Well it definitely isn't a keyboard issue then, its a light sensor issue.
I'm not aware of any way to calibrate a light sensor etc. but maybe someone can add their input on that.
I know that if you are willing and able to root, you can flash a pre-rooted stock ROM or custom ROM and you won't have this problem.
I just found out when I change the screen brightness the keyboard light turns on, after I finish typing shut the keyboard and open again it doesn't turn on anymore. I can go back to home page tap the screen brightness on the widget and turn the keyboard light back on again.
Sorry to Bump! But please help! I tried rooting my phone but its just too many steps. I installed Android SDK which is hundreds of megabytes and was stuck there. Too difficult to use (I rooted my G1 many many times and installed various ROMs including CM7 so I am very familiar with rooting). I tried rebooting and erasing the phone to factory setting and still the same issue.

LED notification not working any more

I've just realized my notification LED doesn't light up anymore regardless of what the notification is.
I thought it was the lightflow app affecting it so i did an uninstall and rebooted my phone, but the LED still never lit up. What gives?
I'm running stock 4.0.2 unrooted device.
EDIT: Even going into GO SMS Pro and under Test Notification the LED also doesnt light up when it normally does.
EDIT 2: Just reinstalled light flow, re-did all my settings, and then testing the notifications via lightflow doesnt work either. My LED just stays blank. Is this normal?
Sent from my non-Apple device via XDA App
Make sure it's turned on in Settings > Display > Flash Notification Light...
I, too, have consistently had this problem. The only ROM I've been able to get LED notification working with consistently is CM9, but even that has been giving me trouble with the latest nightly.
Did you install an app in between the time it worked and the time it stopped working? If so, try uninstalling it. I've had a time or two on ICS where I've had 3rd party apps conflicting with different things. One time I installed Tweetdeck and it completely killed GPS, couldn't get a lock or anything. I uninstalled Tweetdeck, and GPS came back. Reinstalled, and haven't had a problem since.
Probably unrelated, but technically ICS is still Beta in many ways.
I've done quite a few things in trying to narrow down the problem, including wiping data, trying different kernels and varying ROMs, and uninstalling any apps that control LED notifications in any way. Nothing has been able to get my LEDs working, except restoring to an older CM9 nightly.
Sounds like there might be something in /system that is preventing LED notifications from working in the newest nightly. I haven't tried CM9 yet, or I'd test it as well to see if it's an issue with the latest nightlies.
Solved!
It would seem that the newly merged Quiet Hours code includes an option to disable LED notifications as well. It's set for the whole day and is on by default. It's under Settings -> Sounds. Once you disable quiet hours, LED notification works as expected lol.

Does the "Blinker" or Notification LED work on your device?

Greetings to fellow Pixelers!
It seems that the LED Notification/Blinker does not work on Pixel 2 phones properly
and from what I can gather, Google knows about this problem.
I have personally tried every solution out there to no avail.
So this is a simple POLL to see how wide spread this problem is?
Thank you for your participation and any possible solution/fix!
You could ask here where the discussion is ongoing. Yes I understand you want to know if the actual light is working, but other than toggling it on in settings have you tried Light Flow or other apps?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/xl-2-notification-led-t3683788
Mine works fine, but notification light wasn't always turned on by default for a lot of apps. Instead of faffing around with notification settings, I just use Lightflow.
Mine works and using the settings in my mail (Aquamail) and Text (Textra) clients , I have different colored lights for each mail account (x3) and a totally different color for texts. That covers most of my needs, so I haven't even looked into LightFlow .. but I might.
Mine was turned off by default -- I've turned it on, and had to go through apps to select which ones I wanted to trigger the LED. Seems to work fine. But frankly, with notifications appearing on the lock screen, it's far less necessary than it might have been with an earlier phone. I also tried installing Lightflow (I've had a premium license for years -- since my Galaxy Nexus I believe). Lots of options, but within an hour, the OS was warning me of heavy battery usage from Lightflow. I honestly didn't see a whole lot of value in it beyond the default functionality, so I uninstalled it for now...
LED blinker app works fine,I'm using it on my Panda

LED notification/random flash on charge?

So I haven't seen this brought up anywhere and I really find no rhyme or reason to it and figured I would post here and see what responses I get.
Been with my Note10+ almost 2 weeks now and overall i like it, but the lack of LED notification is one of the major downfalls to it; for me anyway. (Yes I know you can add them with apps etc.)
Now let's get to my question part. When my phone is plugged in and charging it give you the default readout with the time to full and percentage on the bottom as well as the 4 red LEDs in animation across the top camera. Every so often I will get a large circular LED flash just to the right of the camera. Sometimes it has flashed blue, and other times its flashed red. Sometimes it will flash and I will have various things in my notification bar such as an app update, and sometimes it will flash just cause it feels like it.
So has anyone else seen this or have any kind of definitive answer as to what that LED flash denotes?
And surely with there being and LED set under there, theres got to be a way to take control of that for notifications I'd think? Look forward to hearing your responses.
Sounds to me like you're using some other notification app. I've tried one which added the charging lights across the top, I don't remember which it was.. Arc lighting maybe . These are not standard. I'd imagine the flashing you're experiencing is related to whatever app you're using which is adding the charging lights.
Also there is no LED under the screen... the screen is actually made up of millions of Tiny LED's.

You have a 3rd party app installed causing that.
