Why has gmail not updated its app to be able to download attachments direclty - with out this preview non-sense. I have had my phone for a while now, and this is the one thing that I am very very annoyed about with google. I don't get it - I don't want to set up the "email" app - I just for the love of gd want the damn GMAIL app to download directly to my sdcard
- anyone have any mods or anything that help?
Search the play store for com.poofinc.gmailattach
I have tried deleting com.htcstreamplayer.apk from /system/app but the icon in question is still there. I searched on the internet and found a thread talking about the icon is part of htcmusic.apk, so I deleted that too and it is still there.
The persistence of such icons makes me want to free my app drawer of it more badly! So if you can show me how to do it, I am much obliged!
Hello !
I have "upped" the topic because I have the exact same question.
I have rooted my device and was able to delete HTCMusic.apk and a lot more, but I am unable to find which .apk file or which application is launched when the "Videos" icon is pressed.
I would like to froze the application related to that icon. I know it's possible because I've done that for the "Miror" icon (which is in fact a component of the Camera application) in order to make it disappear from the drawer.
Can you help us please ?
Thanks in advance. (Sorry for my English, I'm French).
The solution
Hi all,
I'm sorry to double-post but I've found a solution for those who are still interested (I have an HTC ChaCha, but I believe it also works for Desire HD).
You must download an app remover from the Google Play Store, which includes a feature called "Freeze", and which is able to disable application components.
For example I have paid for ROM ToolBox Pro (it includes the Advanced Freeze feature).
The component used by Video icon is in fact packed into the "Gallery" application : .TabPluginDevice.ActivityAllVideos, you can disable it safely.
After .TabPluginDevice.ActivityAllVideos is disabled, the Videos icon disappears from the drawer.
Hi, I search in many different topics but without answer. I also installed gapps and so on, but still cannot force gallery to show my google plus photos. On stock ROM it just works out of box, right now I use Cyan and there I can't use this feature.
Why I would like to have those photos in gallery app instead of using g+ photo app? Because I want to have a widget on desktop with those photos (with out update of album), and so far it is only method which I found (default gallery widget + Gplus sync). Do you have any ideas how to fix it?

Try clearing data on the app info for gallery and then launch and refresh in the top right menu?
Just wondering what ASUS apps people are replacing and what they're replacing them with.
e.g.
Launcher
Browser
Keyboard
Dialer
Contacts
Calendar
SMS messenger
Flashlight
Camera
Music
Gallery
So far for me,
Launcher -> Nova
Browser -> Naked
Keyboard -> Google keyboard (what happened to the AOSP keyboard on F-droid?); Asus keyboard takes up way too much room.
SMS -> Messenger (google)
Music -> Gonemad Music Player
Clock > Clock (from Android M) - mainly because of the ability to dismiss upcoming alarms
Launcher > Nova
Keyboard > It was Swiftkey but I just switched back to the ASUS keyboard because I like having the num keys available without long press. You can tweak the DPI/Res in the 'App Settings' module for Xposed to get the size down so it's not as tall
SMS > Messenger/Hangouts
Music > Shuttle
Video > ES Media Player (part of ES File Explorer) handles pretty much everything although I keep either VLC/KMPlayer on hand for whatever doesn't play
File Explorer > ES File Explorer
Gallery > QuickPic
Calendar > Google Calendar
Notes > Google Keep
Weather > BBC Weather
Email > Inbox
Launcher > Nova
Keyboard > Swiftkey (you can enable numrow in settings)
Music > Poweramp
Video > Plex/MX Player
File Explorer > ES File Explorer
Transparent Weather Clock for the weather.
Acalendar+ for the calendar.
Cm Browser for Browser.
All the rest remains the default applications or keyboard which is quiet great.
What i miss is ES file Explorer because writing to SD card is only possible thought the buildin explorer.

Works for me, although that might be due to being rooted?
I am using the google keyboard (both for English and Japanese) but the ASUS keyboard on short setting (it has short, normal and tall) is actually only a few millimetres taller.
Keyboard -> Swype & Dragon, I bought this a while ago and still use it w/ all of my phones
Keyboard = SwiftKey
Calendar =Google calendar
Notes =Evernote
Music = rocket player
Launcher = Google now
Browser = Chrome
Dialer and contacts =simpler
Gallery = Google Photos
Sms = textra
Email = Gmail for personal, Cloud Magic for work.
I'd love to replace the contacts app with the Google one, but I am not so sure that is possible.

ES File Explorer write to SDcard works for me as well... I just had to grant some sort of permission in the Asus File manager when promoted.
Launcher - Nova Launcher, using a setup I followed from MyColorScreen
Browser - Chrome
Keyboard - Swiftkey, though have considered switching back to default Asus keyboard
Flashlight - PowerToggles on my home screen
Music - Google Play Music
Gallery - Photos (though I believe that's already on the phone, just not using the Asus Gallery app)

They fixed the SD card access in the last OTA.. You just have to give write permission to ES file explorer the first time, I use it as my main file manager also..
I use gmail for gmail, but use the stock mail for my other mail accounts. I prefer the stock one actually. I was using Google calendar for a while but went back to the stock - Google one is better looking, but functionality is same and the stock one displays the actual day and date on the icon, rather than always 31.
Browser > Chrome
Keyboard > Swiftkey
SMS messenger > Hangouts/FB Messenger
Email > Yahoo app, Gmail app
Launcher > originally went with ADW but switched back to ZenUI after adjusting the DPI to get five icons across
Launcher = Nova
Browser = Stock, works good, although I also use Dolphin
Keyboard = Both Touchpal and Swype (love my swipe keyboard)
Dialer = True Caller
Contacts = True Caller
Calendar = DigiCal
SMS messenger = ChompSMS
Flashlight = stock
Camera = stock
Music = JetAudio/Maven
Gallery = QuickPic
launcher.......... ..stock. non updated due to hot downloads **** dont want dual launchers due to battery hog **** 2....but apex at time when bored
messaging.........stock. so i can see notification amount...number of message display screen icons..
calls..........."..."...........stock so i can same number of calls directly on screen icon
browser...............#nochromo..............that is .chrome based with no ads...fast becuase its a chrome google actually but modified.
file manger..........mixexplorer... that can edit notes ..copy paste..text....on non rooted device
music....................poweramp
rest stock.....
all downloads can be seen on xda forum apps and games...

That is strange because when i move Sygic to the SD card, Sygic saw when starting, no access to SD card.
I've reinstalled Es file explorer and still, not able to copy anything from to the SD card.
How to do you give write permissions without root ?
Nothing really other than I have my usual selection of file explorers: astro, and, es, etc. oh and I've just been using hangouts for messaging as I've actually been using hangouts recently(ingress)...
I thought about swapping the keyboard, but like many here, I LIKE having the numeric keys available.
ZenUI turned out not to be the horrible mess that I was afraid that it might be when I ordered the phone. I really like that they RESTORED to many options that Google moronically BURIED under piles of pointless menus(in a "stock" OS/UI).

This is why I got the 64gb version, I came from a 16gb phone and with the apps I have it was a storage nightmare.
Now, I put everything on the 64gb and I have like 50gb left, don't really even need an SD card really lol
I've always had issues with Sygic moved to SD card.

Browser -> Firefox, on all my devices (Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Phone)
Email - > K9mail
File Explorer -> The default file is explorer is great, has network conectivity and many other features, but lacks root access. For anything that requires root acces ES File Explorer.
I normally use Swype for all my devices, but the Asus Keyboard seems decent enough and I like having the num keys visible all the time. Will try it for a while.
I like ZewnUI more than stock Android 5 UI.

Yes, I forgot, I too use K9 mail, great free app, it's free apps like this that make Android worth using and the amount of keyboards and launchers, so glad I got away from IOS ugh. Now IOS is starting to look more and more like Android, it's a good thing Apple doesn't steal other developers ideas LOL
I think for once, I might not actually root this device, I really don't see any great advantage other then the bloatware but some of the Asus bloatware is actually useful unlike the ones our provider put in the Samsungs or LG's etc. The bloatware is not bothering or bogging my device down and I think there will be many more OTA's coming if Asus continues to support this product this well. I can't be bother to keep rooting unrooting to accept OTA's and dropping in new roms. I have the Asus Transformer TF701 that's rooted and that's good enough.

Gboard
Don't use Anti-virus and don't think you need one as long as you're not blindly installing apps
SDMaid and I don't think it's a placebo!
Nova Prime
Google Calendar
BetterBatteryStats and EX Kernel Manager battery info
Chrome
Android Messages (I hardly use SMS anyway so I didn't bother looking for alternatives) (WhatsApp is my main messaging platform)
Solid Explorer
Use my local bank's app for finance
Snapseed for photo editing
Don't use a video editor on my smartphone
Hope this helps!

Looks good. Accubattery is better for battery stats and the Samsung Internet Browser (really!) is the best browser. https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-internet-browser-android-793983/
For SMS's try this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.android.smsorganizer&hl=en_IN
It automatically segregates most of the transaction/spam sms into separate bins and does a good job of it.
Best calendar IMHO is Business Calendar 2. Interface is much better than Google Calendar, more customizable, and syncs with Google Calendar flawlessly
I've been using the Norton junk cleaner for system and such, and manually cleaning the cache for the apps that get bad. Does sd maid do app cache cleaning too? I see it works with root. Also, is it worth it to get pro? Tell me more please!
I personally like AppMgr III (App Manager 3) for System/Cache Cleaner and, especially (but not applicable for taimen), if you have a device that employs an external sd card...
