Do I need to wipe the sdcard partition before I flash? Thanks

1st thing before you do anything: nandroid backup
now you are safe
- if you are upgrading the same rom, then don't wipe the sd partition, otherwise you lose your apps... generally a rom upgrade you can flash straight over the top without wiping anything.
- if you are switching roms, then yes you do a full wipe. make a titanium backup or similar to keep all your apps. then if you're using 4ext recovery there is an option "wipe all partitions except sd card", this formats everything: system/data/cache/sd-ext etc, but not the FAT32 partition of your sd card, where music/photos etc are stored.
As said, DO NOT wipe the sd partition! It's safe to write skill the others because you do have a titanium backup of your apps....

I use RA for my recovery system, and even google failed me here.. what gets backed up using nand + ext vs just nand?, and when your doing regular nand backups, which is better to do?
I think the ext partition is where apps2sd apps reside on the SD card. It's a separate partition, so it wouldn't be normally included in a nandroid backup because it wouldn't normally be overwritten when flashing a new ROM or whatever.
I think.
Correct....the ext Partition on your sd card is where the apps2sd program backs up you apps. Doing a nandroid backup backs up everything apps, the rom itself, and user data....on to the main part of the sd card....

Also you really just want too do a nand backup before you flash a new rom...just incase something goes wrong....a normal backup is fineevery other time

I was gonna use this but I have a quick question. I know this wipes data/cache/dalvik but does it wipe the SD also (pictures, backups, downloads, etc) because I would like to use it to do the ussual wipe because I have been having some problems that I believe are due to cwm not wiping right but I don't want to lose all the data on my SD.

NO wipe formats he SD card. The only way to format the SD card from the phone is to go to menu-settings-sd-format

Ok thanks. I just saw the words "format all" and figured better be safe than sorry

Then why after using Calkulin's last night my video, music and apps folder are gone!
If they were on the internal memory, they were wiped because they fall under the /data part of factory. If it was on the sd card, it shouldn't have been wiped.
the reason ur having problems is because your using cwm, switch to Amon_RA and you won't have those wipe problems.

They were on the sd card..over 3GB of files. It didn't wipe anything else as I can see. I had folders named apps, musicfolders, video and vx..all gone..surprised it didn't erase my image files. I even searched and saw where people had concerns and everyone stated as you..that it does not touch sd card..

I heard that also..I kinda switch back and forth..Amon_RA doesn't seem to be able to flash CM7. BUT, I did use CWM to flash the wipe. Oh boy!
Recently I've had problems with my sd-ext partition. When I try to backup(with CWM 3.0.0.5) my current rom, then at the backup process it doesn't write 'backing sd-ext' and when trying to restore it says 'sd-ext image not found skipping'.
I tried installing CM7 and a few other roms skipping backup, at first install it didn't read my SD card at all, second installing SD worked, but Titanium Backup didn't read the partition and all apps were installing on internal memory.
Right now I'm using a Sense 2.1+3.0 rom and everything is working good, my Desire is S-ON if it matters something.
Thanks in advance.
Check the partition in gparted

I did, even formatted my entire SD card and redid fat32 partition and ext3.
Wipe, reformat and titanium restore?

the 3.0.0.5 is well know to not backup the sdext
(I also think its the unique CWM with that bug..so i dont know why u using that)
use the latest 5.0.2.0...seems to work fine
I have been using this version for a while and didn't have this problem so far.
This bug only happened in the last 2 weeks or so.
And what do you think about the problem with CM7? that is not reading the sd-ext and sometimes not that sd card at all?
Hello. I'm going to buy a new SDcard. To successfully move the sdext partition from the old SDcard, can I just perform a nandroid+sdext backup and restore that backup after inserting the new SDcard? Given that the new SDcard is formatted in the same way as the old one (but a slightly larger ext4 partition). Or probably even just take a backup of the sdext partition only; I believe that is possible with RMD recovery.
Get 4ext recovery and make advanced backup/sd-ext only, when you're done backup everything from sdcard to HDD.
Then just insert new sdcard, partition it, restore all the files from HDD and do advanced restore/sd-ext only.
You're done.

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that backing up and restoring on a new sdcard will work. I'll stick with RMD recovery because it can also only backup the ext partition.
Hey guys I have been trying back up my data so can flash a new ROM but titanium backup will only back up to my phone not my SD card so when I wipe through cwm I'm going to lose my backups can anybody please help with this

Go to preferences and change backup folder location. Click "detect"/search entire device and navigate to your sd card.
Not sure about cwm, but twrp won't format your internal sd storage unless you specifically target it. I always wipe data, system, and cache prior to flashing a new rom. I leave the sd partition alone unless I want to clear it for whatever reason.
