[Q] How best to wipe/factory reset phone - HTC Wildfire S

I have a Wildfire S someone was just looking to get rid of. I'd like to try and set this up for my son to use, but it has a lock screen code and I've no way of directly contacting the previous owner.
I'd like to know the easiest way to just wipe the phone and factory reset it so I can try it out and see if it's going to work for me. I may try rooting/ROMing later, but right now I just want to wipe all their data etc. and just get it back to a factory reset state. If the easiest way to get this thing wiped is to root it and install a ROM I'd be find with that as well. (I don't have any experience tinkering with HTC phones).
Thanks for any help. I tried searching and wasn't able to find anything and there's no stickies I could find on the subject (If I missed an obvious guide I apologize).

you can directly factory reset it.
remove battery and again install it.then hold volume down and power button.
then you can see bootloader menu, and with help of volume keys select factory reset option and press power button.it might help to reset your phone directly.

Awesome - thanks - I was trying holding down Vol Up and Vol Down + PWR which is the way it's always been with Samsung phones.

Yes, complete factory reset back to stock.
do you mean to hold the 3 buttons (power and bottom left and bottom right) at the same time???
how to do it, or need 2 persons to do it?

With the device off (it will say it is off)
Push and hold the power button, them immediately push and hold both bottom (left and right) page turn buttons.
When it powers on release the power button and release the page turn buttons when the recovery screen comes up (see attached picture).
If you need someone to help, you have an opportunity to make a new friend
It is not difficult, but as usual with these things it may take a few tries to get the timing right.

Its actually not complete factory reset. I had some stuff in System and Keyboard mods and they stuck when I factory reset. I'm going to be releasing a SD card image that COMPLETELY factory resets the device.
I don't think it un-roots it, unless an unrooted nook has a wireless adb connection. I did this hit yes twice and completed the factory reset and i can still connect to the nook touch via wireless adb I just installed adw again without going through any of the rooting process again.
On the nook color what is referred to as the "factory reset" just resets the data partition
also since i had gapps installed it booted to the android welcome screen on my 2nd boot.
edit: I just "factory reset" again and it boots fine at first but then a reboot brings it to the android welcome screen with the moving hand to the android button and it gets stuck there.
So we need someone to figure out how to do a system reset.
edit: on my defense ^ post wasnt here when i started typing mine.

I can't wait for this, right now mine is not usable and a easy fix is always preferred over a complicated one.

Actual Factory Reset
Success...kinda, so i got a full factory reset, however i am not sure how. I for the life of me could not get 8 failed boots to work, the thing always wanted to boot regardless of what i was pressing, so i was messing around in adb installing some things, deleting some things and then when i typed reboot it just rebooted to the factory image screen.
I uploaded the actual factory reset screen. If anybody else has success getting it to go to restoring original factory image maybe you can give a more reliable way.
edit: i have been messing with it for a few hours so maybe it got sick of me and was like, eff it i am factory imaging.
I can confirm this works since after i did it the data was still untouched (launchers were still installed but root was lost/ wireless adb no longer connected) after i had the factory reset then i did a data reset that is posted in op and I was back to pure stock files.
I'll confirm that the factory reset listed by the OP doesn't work completely. I would reset the Touch, then power off and on, and then the android screen would show up at that point. This happens consistently.
I'm not sure the Nook Touch is my cup of tea, so I'm thinking it might be headed back to B&N. I'm definitely interested in any clear working instructions for a true reset to factory default that can be conjured by wiser minds than mine.
Sorry, duplicate post.

I figured out how to get a full factory "re-image" of my nook touch.
I followed the instructions for the nook color here:
Method two: Set the Boot counter to 8 by typing
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
I rooted my nook touch using touchnooter. Loaded up the amazon app store and played around for a while. But I found after I rooted the nook that the nook store didn't work any more. So i wanted to get back to factory state. I then installed the wireless adb app. I logged in to my nook using my linux pc and followed the above directions. After the re-image you have to do a data reset by going in and restoring to factory settings in the nook itself.
As soon as I gave the reboot command it started the re-image as seen in this link:

Is it normal for the nook to at the very end of the process bar ? What do I do ? Did I screw it ? I am afraid to try powering it off ?

Up for any suggestions/ help??

Uhm, long story short My Evo crapped out on me with the endless booting. Now before I get trolled. Yes, I have research this issue for several days now yielding little to no results. I went from only seeing a black screen to the constant reboot after the "drag to unlock screen". The phone has a mind of its own only working when ever it wants to. But after a reboot or a battery pull the cycle begins again until it decides that it wants to run again. So the cards are on the table, I'm up for any suggestions, tips and so what you want to throw at me.
What I've done:
flashing the RUU as a .exe as well as .zip file
OTA Update (gave me the black screen)
Thanks, Don
boot into recovery and wipe all the data then install the rom again?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I was NOT rooted. But, I tried that through the stock recovery (holding volume down+ power through the recovery screen) ANd nothing. Same results. This phone will not defeat me!!
I don't know if this would help. I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302172
You could download the PC36IMG zip and use the bootloader to restore the phone.
If you are not on Sprint, you could do a search for a stock unrooted ROM for your carrier.
Ok if your not a rooted user, which as you say your not, hold your volume button down and power button (after you remove your battery and put it back in), then let go when your screen turns on. You should be at a recovery, find factory reset. All this will do is put your phone back to factory defaults. All your contacts are automatically on your gmail, and will sync to your phone as soon as you sign in with it after your factory reset

Tried this too. I ended up rooting it yesterday using the revolutionary method, hoping that flashing a custom rom could possibly fix the corrupted file or w.e could be causing this, but nothing. This is ridiculous, is it possible that it could be a hardware defect?? If I ever get it booted again, ill post the hardware specs.
Thanks once again,Don.
Update:
currently I managed to get Myn's twopointtwo ROM functioning properly for the time being at least.
Software:
android 2.2
baseband 2.15.00.05.02
kernel 2.6.32.17

[Q] Ensuring I keep my warranty from bad power button

Did some searching, and couldn't find my question.
So today, out of nowhere, my phone decides that it's time that my power button do the random reboot thing.
Fortunately, it booted once long enough to back up all my data, do a nandroid, then reboot, do a TiBu, and Triangle Away. Then I booted into download mode. It did/does say official, no custom binary, etc. My first try at ODINing to stock (using the 4.0.4 LG1 ROM) got all the way to system, and about half way through stopped.
I keep trying, but only once at this point has it even hit flashing the system during ODIN. I have tried multiple times of cleaning the power button, but it only seems to help less and less each time I clean it.
My question is, is there a trick to keep the SGS3 in download mode with a faulty power button? Also, I'm guessing there's a good chance that if I can't keep it in download mode, then there's a good chance AT&T can't tell the best flash I've done is half the system?
Thanks, y'all!
I was able to finally get an ODIN to flash all the way. My understanding is that I still need to get a data/factory reset done before it's all in the clear, but that's proving to be an even bigger task. When (it's rare, trust me) it will go into recovery, and I am able to highlight data/factory reset, pressing the power button makes it jump all over the place.
In the event that I do actually get a reset started, what all does the stock recovery's reset do? I saw it starts with formatting /data, what else?
Well, the ODIN to stock plus the initial data reset apparently was enough. It finally booted into the OS. I did a factory reset from there, which was very quick with no words, just Andy and the blue polyhedron.

Broken Screen- How do I factory reset

My girlfriends phone was dropped, you cannot see the screen at all. Does not respond to touch. I managed to get her pictures music etc off of it but I want to restore it to factory defaults in order to remove all of her personal information. This is a stock phone with NO root.
I would think this will have to do with ADB, I have fooled around with ADB in the past but I dont have a clue as to how install/set it up again. Please leave a detailed instruction if possible.
I GREATLY appreciate any and all help in advance.
No need for adb just boot into recovery and factory reset.
To boot into recovery just hold down volume up + home + power button. Once in recovery just use the volume keys to navigate the options and use the power button to select factory reset.

Try watching a youtube tutorial or something that shows the recovery screen and then just figure out where the reset option is.

[Q] How to enter recovery mode using key combination?

I can use "adb reboot recovery" to enter TWRP 2.7 recovery mode, but I want to use key combination, please tell me how to that.
Hold Power + Vol Down > Wait until LG Logo pops up and release from both buttons > quickly hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down again
It will pop up with some message about reset to factory settings, but it's all a bluff.
Hit Power x3 times to confirm and you'll get to TWRP recovery
Thanks, it works.
actually I enter this factory reset mode before, but i just don't know it a "fake".
so will this erase all data or not?

That will depend on whether you've installed TWRP or not.
If you've still got the original recovery it will wipe it like it says it will, if you've got a custom recovery it will take you to it.
The standard recovery isn't a recovery like you're expecting it to be, if just has a way of resetting things to default without allowing you to do anything extra. OEM don't like giving people options but want a way to reset to defaults that the customer can use before needing to return a faulty unit which might not be faulty. If that makes sense.

From what I can tell, it's not a "bluff". It seems that the stock recovery partition would just automatically do a factory reset, so it warns you before booting the recovery partition. Seeing as you're non-stock, it just boots into TWRP/CWM. It's a valid warning that's simply set up in a weird way.

You don't.
We'll you might be able to but you're going about it the wrong way.
First you need to find the right forum for your device, then you read, followed by more reading.
At some point you've hopefully discovered that you should have done all this reading before you reset your device.
Also before pressing the post button on your next post, read it first to make sure it makes sense.
Thank you very much, I tried other combinations found on some web pages that failed. This one worked!
Issue remains.

Install LG software on your computer first. Then with the tablet completely off, hold VolUp and plug the tablet into the computer. That will enter LG download mode. Use the LG software on your PC to install the latest firmware available for your device. From there you can use the guides on this forum to go custom if you so desire.
