Battery life on CM10 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hows your battery life? Mines is horrible tempted to go stock pre root wiped stats and cpu governed down to 400 mhz max and brightness low running wifj only plus my keys magically stopped working

Battery life was never good for me either on CM10. CM10.1 is a lot better on battery IMO

I've had fairly decent battery on CM9+
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2

I'd say my battery life is about 2/3rds of what I got with the last RandomRom.
I just carry a spare battery and keep it plugged in more.
Funny thing is that a friend of mine who has an iPhone 5 gets roughly the same battery life as me, on CM10. She used to always ask me why I did not switch. Now she gets aggravated when I swap batteries as her phone is about to shut down and says, "Don't rub it in!"

My battery life is about 2/3rds as to what I got with stock, but it really depends on use. It seems to use less power and last longer in standby than it did in stock, but more power when I'm using the browser/gps/3g. I tried CM10.1, but am getting better battery life on the latest 2013-01-20 CM10 build.
If your hardware keys are broke, you can enable the software keys. Add the following line to your system/build.prop file and reboot:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
I also created a flashable zip that adds the NavBar and resizes it so it takes up less space here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113542

When I was using CM7, my friend took my phone and underclocked it to 200Mhz and it killed my battery faster due to Android trying to keep the processor speed down.

Battery issues

My phone has TERRIBLE battery life. It lasts about 2 hours usually and sometimes 2 and a half. I'm running the stock GB from that came with the phone, but I am rooted. I have tried every single from out there..none of them give me sufficient battery life. By the time i get home from school by battery is down to 30%. What could be causing this? I'm also on my third warranty replacement phone and my second battery.

Normally I would suggest going to stock for people but in your case, maybe custom is the answer.
Do you have loads of apps and accounts setup by the way?

This really has no useful information to be helped. 2 hours? On stand by, screen on time, any cpu tuners, etc?
Maybe take screenshots of what the battery chart looks like and what apps have the highest percentage.
It is about 2 and a half hours of screen on time. And I can't get a screenshot of it because I just flashed a new rom, and my battery hasn't had a chance to settle in with the new rom yet. If it doesn't improve I will post a pic of my battery stats. Thanks.

Well, I'm guessing there is an app that keeps running constantly. You should try an ICS ROM, that might help.

Same problem
I've been experiencing identical issues with my T989. I've had terrible battery life without many apps running in the background (as I use the stock task manager to execute all running apps). I've finally decided to root my device and install a 'set cpu speed' app. Even though I've set my minimum cpu speed to 200 MHz and max to 800 MHz it's still lasts for a maximum of 4 hours until I get the "Battery is critically low" message.
Does samsung provide warranty for their batteries? Because I've called to complain about battery life and they asked me to remove the battery and send the device itself so they could repair it. And under no circumstances would they offer me an exchange for the battery, maybe I just caught a bad rep?
I love this phone and all it's features and prefer this over the iPhone but I feel like i'm being forced to just purchase the iPhone 4s.

Is your battery going quick too?

I was on Blazer GB a long time ago getting great battery life.[1 day]
After flashing all Cyanogen Mod builds for ICS and JB then to Paranoid Android. I have been getting bad battery.
I'm not blaming CM or PA .
Is anyone else getting bad battery life too?
I just flashed a nightly build for CM (12/25 to be exact). Its as bad as the rest after GB.

I used ICS from August to December. The eye candy was nice, and the speed was enjoyable. It felt good to run the latest and greatest.
But the battery life was killing me. I have two batteries, a generic Chinese battery and a bloated OEM battery.
I would go 8 hours a day without even touching my phone, and the battery would be at 20 percent, or even dead. With the bloated battery , max was 3 hours.
I had to go back to gingerbread. Installed calkulins on December 3rd, and Juice defender.
Now I get 10+ hours with my Chinese battery, and 8+ hours with the bloated battery.

Good point! You should definitely take a look to see if the battery is swollen, it is an indicator that the cells are imploding which results in terrible battery life.
I've been hearing a lot of people having problems with their phone turning off right after the boot animation. After the boot animation, the screen flickers and the phone turns off. You will have to plug your phone in to your charger and then turn it back on for your phone to boot up. This is due to your battery going bad. Take it to the nearest Sprint store and they will replace it for free if you have insurance.
Battery is swollen 2 out of 4. 3 are ebay cheap OEM generic LOOKING, but 1 works. Then I have the Sprint offered extended battery works fine.
It has to be that. Some ROMS are killing battery quick too. I use KMS app to kill media server temporarily then it goes back on after a while maybe after 2 hours. But after I've underclocked 200/800 Pegasusq, noop i/o, I've had better life. Not excellent.

Leaked stock TW FL16 doubled my battery life from snipers latest PA 2.5.6. Main difference? Less time "awake" in battery stats. I switched back to stock ICS under same conditions (apps, gps, Wi-Fi on even when not connected) and the leaked stock TW FL 16 was still better. "Android OS" and "Android system" dropped to 4th and 5th on battery consumption percentages. Can't freakin wait till the AWESOME developers that support this device get source code. Then we'll see good battery life again. Maybe not GB good, but better than lately.

Why is aosp (AOKP/cm10.1) battery life so abysmal?

From what I've used aosp ROMs tends to have pretty bad battery life in comparison to stock tw ROMs. My question is why and how it can be addressed? Now I've used a multitude of aosp ROMs including cm10.1, aokp, and root box just to name a few (all 4.2.2) and my battery life is pretty bad. I won't post any screenshots because it varies but take my word for it, took it off charger by 10am by 2pm (2 hours of screen on time later) it was already at 30% (this was underclocked to 1.2ghz mind you) I think my only option is the nexus 4 at this point as it has stock android and I've heard it is having fantastic battery life on 4.2.2. We'll see, anyone have input on this?

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, I've tried underclocking, undervolting, brightness adjustments, battery saving apps, etc. Different kernels too (lean, kt, bms, stock, etc) with different governors and io schedulers. I'm so fed up at this point. I want to use my phone without worrying about if I'll have enough battery left. I refuse to use touchwiz.

You might have a bad battery. If you don't mind the bulk or weight, I would recommend getting the Zerolemon 7,000 mAh extended battery. Then you could go a couple of days without charging your phone.
If you do want to keep the slim and sleek look of the S3, Zerolemon also sells 2300 mAh batteries (which are 2400 mAh) for $20 for two of them on amazon.

on AOSP roms, 4 hours in I'm at 60%
so something is def wrong with AOSP roms when it comes to battery
it sucks cause I REALLY wanna use Liquid smooth or CM, I loved them both but the battery was killing me, forced me to go back to TW

Ktoonz with a matching nightly.
Battery life actually varies per device an usage. I use some on my S3 an rarely touch it, the battery will last practically all day long. Also if you run a high over clock that will destroy battery life, along with too many apps running at the same time too. A simple underclock with a good governor can extend battery life too. Staying on wifi helps too. There's many ways to get good battery life for you device. As Faux123 said "every device is different". Even though we all have the same phones, some act differently.

I feel the same...I hate touchwiz so I'm forced to use CM10.1, which had been giving bad battery life ever since the 3.4 kernel update back in march.
I disabled all sync for all my accounts, use greenify, always keep screen brightness at lowest, only turn on WiFi or data when I need to use it, and did a clean wipe, yet the battery still drains faster than a bloated touchwiz ROM.

I do - I undervolt it to 800mhz using the profiles function in SetCPU and have already undervolted the 800mhz range and below by between -25 and -50.
I know it uses hsdpa, gps etc so it is battery hungry - if you struggle on power look at getting one of those power packs (10000ma)
That would keep ya going all day haha

Battery life.

I've got to say, battery life is pretty bad with this phone. I bought it brand new yesterday so not sure if it needs to condition itself or not but I came from a LG G2 which has a 3000mah battery, which is slightly smaller than this but battery life was far better. Granted the screen was slightly smaller but still. Is there any Roms that improve battery life but still relatively stock?

Ya, this sounds bizarre.. I've found this battery to be amazing. How long is it lasting? I've had mine for less than a week and I've used it heavily everyday. I have not even had to worry about charging during the day. 24 hours no problem.
Same here. The first week it was lasting all day but with only 3 hours of screen on time. After some tweaking, I'm currently getting still 20ish hours with 5-6 hours screen on time.

A lady I know has the sprint variant and I looked at her settings and she had 15 and a half hours off the charger with 5.5 hours screen on and had gps and all the air features on as she's not tech smart so her phone was like out of the box and her brightness was up. I have a custom ROM with GPS, NFC and all the air gesture **** off with the screen at like 35% brightness and I get no where near that.

Like I said the battery easily last 24 hours with medium to little use but it dies fast while using the screen on, I'm seeing others with everything on like GPS, NFC and al the touchwiz things with their brightness up getting far better on screen time than me with everything off and brightness dimmed

Well if that is the case your battery life isn't terrible. 24h with 5h SOT and 24% life isn't bad at all. Its not great but it is far from terrible.

I'm just using the stock ROM, rooted with the Kingo Root app. Installed TWRP and then Faux Kernel (hltetmo-faux123-003u)
Be warned, TWRP did trip the Knox counter to 0x1. I had to install Knox Disabler so it would stop complaining.
I was getting about 24 hours per charge, until remembered about the FauxClock app and enabled the Intelliplug driver and Intellithermal manager. About this time, I also installed Advanced Task Killer after going without it for a few years.
Screen brightness is on auto, WiFi and mobile data are both on constantly. I have not had to make many calls though, so I'm not sure how this may affect battery life...
So far, I haven't noticed any decrease in performance. Right now I've been on battery for 30 hours and I have 45% left.

Because of adjustments... Custom ROM and kernel, Screen is at 35%, gps and all location services off, NFC off, all the phones extras like air gestures multi window etc are off, I use greenify to freeze apps and I have most Google syncs off and I'm only able to achieve this. I know a lady who knows nothing about phones and has everything/feature on the phone turned on with full brightness and gets 15.5 off charge with 5.5 screen on time by the time she's at 30%. I don't get it.
Edit- I should note I made this post while stock. Because I heard phenomenal things about this phones battery and was quite disappointed.

Signal strength and the binning of your CPU could be differentiating factor. Reading into other people's experience too much can lead to disappointment.
