Hello , i have searched in the forums for the answer to this questions but most posts about it seemed misinformed or just pulling their facts out of nowhere , so i ask again , what should be my limit for CPU (cpu! , not battery) temperature? .
Im running Liquid Smooth 2.0 with NCX v13 kernel , which is clocked at 1.2ghz with interactive , i think n7 values . GPU is supposed to be overclocked at 520mghz but i dont know how to check or modify this (anyway?)
Im really liking this kernel/rom and im getting decent temperatures.... Previously in stock roms , i never ever checked CPU temp , only Battery temp and i thought it was acceptable to have it under 50c (although the Renovate boost thread claims 52c is okay , HTC claims 55c is okay too) but i have an app with an alarm for 49c+ , i have only reached that like 2 or 3 times. So battery temperature is relatively controlled.
CPU temperature i never noticed but became interested after hearing that this kernel was slightly OCd , i seem to run from 45c idle to 83c under heavy load. Tegra games make the CPU get hot really fast , i played 10 minutes of Beach Buggy Blitz and the temperature reached 44.5c for battery (which is relatively low!) and 82c for CPU , the phone didnt even feel hot ,although i have a Trident Aegis case .
Non THD games seem more balanced (CPU and Battery temperature go up accordingly) . So i dunno if i should be worried.. I heard that it can reach 99c but that just seems a little bit excessive .
BTW are there any temperature alarm apps for the CPU? , like a notification or alarm if the CPU temperature goes above a certain limit? .
My HOX has only gone green and red led once , when i was watching a movie through MHL .
I used SysTuner to measure cpu temp and some other app to measure battery temperature.
Thanks for your input .

I am new to android phones. And i have no experience about overclock.
Will my cpu easily break down due to keep overclocking?..
Honestly, i seldom change my cell phone model, i want my defy can stay a life at least 1.5yr.
i think overclocking can't really damage your phone, voltage can. so i suggest you keep the voltage around [email protected] (default is [email protected], so this should be fine), and if the phone doesn't hang or reboot, you're good to go but you could try lowering vsels, you know, the lower the voltage, the lower the power consumption, the heat and the chance to fry your cpu but i'm not sure!
Yep, 1 GHz is safe, I'm using [email protected] as well, and the CPU is capable to run easily at [email protected] continuously. The leaked Gingerbread ROM from Motorola uses 1GHz as well, so don't worry, you just have to find the safe vsel settings.
thanks for replying, i m currently using 1GHz @ 58 .. Everything is alright
Should I make the voltage as low as possible?
yeah, just to lower the power consumption and temperature, but it isn't necessary.
Can you share your voltage setting please..?
I do the stability test and it gets successful run for 5min then this means the setting is okay?
i don't overclock, just undervolt, here are my settings (with setvsel):
800MHz - 45vsel
600MHz - 30vsel
300MHz - 18vsel
up_threshold: 90%
actually if you wanna make absolutely sure your device is stable, you should run it like for an hour. but if it runs for 5 minutes without error that's quite okay, you shouldn't have problems with those settings
Thanks so much, i m trying to lower my voltage setting.
Besides, i want to ask about the battery temperature, what is the maximum temperature before getting damage to the cell? I usually goes up to 37~39 degree celsius.. is it normal?
mine is usually around 29-32 °C, but i have it undervolted, so idk. but 37-39 seems a bit high, that means the cpu temp is way over 40 degrees, you should check it out!
EDIT: tried stress testing for 20 minutes with [email protected], it went up to 35°C, so you should definitely find out what's wrong with your device!
I actually underclocked to 600MHz, since I couldn't see a big difference even at 1200MHz in normal usage. A Pentium3 at 4Ghz will still not perform as well as a slower clocked new CPU for example, CPU design is more important - what instructions it supports.
Battery life is more imprtant to me and heat is very bad for Li-ion batteries too.
Also I found changing the CPU governor to "interactive" made a difference in GUI responsiveness and I have had less stuttering.

so, what's your standby lifetime after underclocked cpu?
I can see the performance improved when i was watching flash video on browser. But honestly, i dont think there are anymore huge difference after overclocking..
But as the battery life still remains quite well, i will still keep overclocking to 1GHz.. Isn't it a good idea?

lol... What happend to HD and THD games... Did u try playing them at 600mhz??
Overclocking to 1 GHz with the right voltage values seems to be absolutely no problem for Defy.
BTW, does anyone know whether it's possible to set scaling governor to "Interactive" mode under Froyo? Gingerbread kernel let me set it, but I haven't found the way under Froyo.
Battery life was a little bit better, the display and 3G always draw a lot of power.
Standby time got better, but I don't use very low vsel any more due to errors in YouTube and dropped connection of radio streams.
Before I used 300-600-800 at 20-30-48, this was very stable in stability test, but for example Youtube would start showing "error playing video". After I increased vsel, it went away.
I mostly did it to lower temperature, optimal temperature for li-ion is around 25°C according to Wikipedia I think.
I don't play 3d games, they would benefit the most from overclock I believe.
Angry birds RIO for example would stutter for a second or two after a level loaded, but it would become as smooth as at higher clocks, when I wait for a second.
I hope flash gets better, when hardware acceleration gets enabled in Quarx's CM7.
I was running [email protected] for a month straight. No issues at all. The highest my temp reached was 112F after playing games for about an hour straight. I now just run it at [email protected], and it's plenty fast for me. I did some "testing" with all the options in SetVsel. It's not science sound, but if you use the Gingerbread Icon in the notification bar, and are running at stock (800 speed) you will notice when the CPU maxes out it doesn't even reach full capacity. I found Words with Friends to really use the CPU, and at 800 it pings the meter in the orange (The notification icon shows green, orange, and red for "zones"). If I overclock it at 1000 or above then the meter goes into the red. I don't know the exact number it switches from orange to red, but being at stock 800 is well below what the chip can really do since it doesn't even max out the meter. I hope I didn't confuse anyone. It makes sense to me.
weird...my cpu at any game reach the 800mhz
yet even in normal situations like browsing through the files on the phone it reaches 800mhz
and also despite the values i use in setvsel are not high(which is:
24 @ 300
34 @ 600
48 @ 800
)
the phone still reaches maximum 38C when i play games and if i set the value in the third vsel the games starts to hang!!
seems like i am the only one who have these problems..but why
anyone have any idea
im running stock arabic froyo btw
if someone can confirm to me that i can keep Arabic language if i installed another rom using custom restore in nandroid then i would be using prays or official 2.3 but no one answered me about that
anyway the important thing is anyone knows why my cpu temp is always high?
Well ambient temperature is important too. If it is 30°C where you live and your phone's temperature is at 35°C I'd say you are good. If the outside temperature is 10°C and your phone is dat 40°C I'd say there is something wrong (unless you were playing games or watching a movie).
in my opinion, it is definitely safe that you overclocking to the leaked moto level.
however, the voltage is still a mystery.
there's no constant conclusion about this.
i'm using [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and it works fine for me
I'm getting really annoyed. No problems clocking up to 1100mhz with stock voltage (58). But changing the voltage settings, even slightly, makes the phone more or less unstable.
Hey all im seeing many posts about battery tempratures etc but what are peoples CPU temps like?
Like many others my phone aslo gets VERY warm during intense use.
Im using a paid app called tempmonitor which allows you to both view CPU and Battery temps.
after around 15/20mins of playing riptide i notice that the CPU temp has shot right upto anywhere between 60 and 70oC games still run fine with no lag etc is it possible that some of the heat from the CPU could be increasing the temp of the battery?
Just a thought please post your CPU temps too if you can.
see attached screenshots

your most likely right but that app doesn't work on my phone only shows battery temp.
You guys obviously haven't seen the images of the Endevour stripped down. The Endevour has a copper heatsink/EM shield that covers almost the entire underside of the phone that helps spdread the heat generated by the CPU away from it. This would add a small amount of heat to the battery but in my opinion it wouldn't add enough to cause any damage to the device (and the pictures seem to comfirm this).
My main worry would be the cpu temperature. Your images seem to show it running hotter then my overclocked PC has done ever but again as long as it is within the safe limits for the processor then it's not an issue.
All this does come with a caveat though and that is can we trust this app to read the temperature sensor correctly and reliably? Does Nvidia or HTC provide one we could use? I would trust anything provided by the chipset or deivce manufacturers over some random thing downloaded off the market.
hey guys is it normal that our W heats up to about i think 45-50 degrees while charging.. sometimes it heats up too when using the internet via reverse tethering.. just wanna know if its normal, and some advices to prevent it would be awesome.
With Black Notes Hybrid 2nd Gen
Its happening to me aswell getting really hot.
I recently flashed to BlackNotes Rom and when i was charging it overnight for the first time, when i woke up i picked up my phone i immediatly dropped it.
i checked on set cpu the speed was min122 max 1401 ondemand.
ALSO i checked the temp it WAS 60c literally i swear phones should never go over 50c.On stock rom the highest i was every on was 45c playing games.
From then my phone always gets hot with 1401mhz. i dont know why.
With normal use average temp 31c-35c it used to be 27c stock ROM.
I think i sholud get a new battery because 60c is rediculous that could explode it and i thought li-ion batterys have fail safe or something like that for 50c???
EDIT: setCpu 122min 768max and my battery is still 36c im not playing any games im just on homescreen.

WOW. WOW. 60c is too far hot! and yes your phone and motherboard can be burned! When I using BN chapter 2, and when playing games (1401 mhz) the temperature never above 42c, and then I limit the cpu, it will automatically set the cpu speed 245-368 with powersave governor, and screenoff with the same configuration. so when idle, my phone never above 25c (im using arco CM9 now). and I suggesting you to buy a new battery
my phone heat up too,but about 40C only
I've been on the Bionic cow rom for the last few days with data enabled, anyway went to send 4 1.1mb pictures to another email address today and as well as taking around 10-15 mins (2G) it got really got like through my trousers it was making my leg quite hot but never seem'd to get that on original rom
Jamie.
just an addition to my post. i live in the philippines where the temperature is getting really hot this few days. i tried to charge my phone on the office where its about a bit cold and the phone never heated up. are you guys from a cold place and still heats up? if thats the case then my problem is just normal.
maybe you can try download cpu spy from play store and check your cpu time in state. now i'm using bionic cow rom with xxlm8 kernel, the cpu time in state is always 1401 mhz. it's fast but create heat when playing games n surfing!!! i've attach my device screen shot as reference.

sure ill try that app.. my phone heats up too now when im surving using droidvpn.
i found an app that displays the current temperature but only for the battery, i dunno if only the battery heats up and not the phone.. the attached screenshot was the normal temperature of my phone, ill try to upload another once i got time for hard gaming or browsing that can heat up the phone, maybe on weekend.
My phone usually goes up till 4OC. But thats when I use data network and watching movies on the web at the same time. When charging my phone heats up to 35C. Other than that I cant think of any other ways how my phone heats up. But will let you guys know when something comes up.

does your phone heats up while your using it? or just on charging? mine only heats up while charging so i only charge on the office to maintain the temperature, its better to charge on cold places, however if your phone heats up while you are using it then maybe its because of some tweaking that you've done to your phone thats makes it use too much CPU that causes the heat.
normally i play some hd games mostly bcz of games my phones heat up.does it happen to anyone too while playing games phone heat up.if i overclock my cpu and reduce the frequency @ 1.2 or 1.0 mhz i think then my phone heat less

i also play HD games and watch movies, but my phone only heats up when im using reverse tethering(means i use internet on my phone via usb from PC internet) and i think it will really cause heat because of internet and the same time charging while connected in the USB, maybe you made some more adjustments that made your phone heat easily. but if you play for hours then its normal, just for me don't play that much long or less your internal chips will melt.
Hi all , i'm using aokp rom and lean kernel on my galaxy nexus.I have a problem : my phone is very hot. When i use wifi to check facebook and surf web , i feel my phone is hot in around camera and i use android tuner to check temperature of phone's cpu and battery . My cpu reaches 46-52 degree C and batter reaches 37-41degree C. When i use 3g cpu reaches 60-65 degree C and battery reaches 45 degree C . Is it ok or not ? If not , what solution for it ? Thanks for reading . Sorry for my bad English
Those temps are fine. Your CPU won't throttle until at least 68°C, and it can handle well over that without sustaining damage.

My anecdotal experience shows that performance becomes terrible when my CPU gets over 60C. Even if it is not thottling, getting that hot is making my phone no fun to use.
What are the normal temperature for oneplus 3, when playing games, using fb,messsenger, whatsapp in 4g and watching video and doing all the same activities in an ambent temperature of 29
I don't think many people actually measure temps of their phones ... Suffice to say - it can get pretty warm, but not too hot (maybe max around 45°C on surface). Internal (cpu) I guess could easily achieve 70+.
P.S.: Stop being so paranoid! This is at least third thread you opened about temperatures and people keep telling you that your phone is NOT overheating ...

This is the reason
I posted a pic using cpu Z... It was when I was uploading a video in Instagram.... See sensors Reaching 50-55???
I was tethering and using Instagram.. Is this normal for this
With light usage i get about 30°c and on heavy load the cpu goes up to 70°c, those temps are pretty normal
FFS it's a metal backed device which conducts heat but also passively cools faster. Devices are getting very powerful. I came from a Z3+ which hit 80-90 °c on the soc. This device is no where near being "hot" and that's from running consistent synthetic benchmarks and gets to 50°c but cooled very fast.
If it hits 80°c + on the Soc not the individual cores as they ramp up and down very fast then maybe you can repost.
Holy crap I'm tired of this... Those sensors are for the CPU, the CPU throttles at 85°C and here you are asking us the same question in which we've already answered you.. THERE IS NO PROBLEM with your phone. Now stop asking these questions and stop being so freakin paranoid. It's hot outside your phone will get hot.
