This is my last ditch before I pull my tail between my legs and run off to ATT and concede defeat.
Bought my GS3 from ATT in september and have ran CM10 Nightlies since the first day. No issues and everything worked great. It took me all of 5 hours to begin to hate TouchWiz. Anyway when CM10.1 (4.2) was released I immediately upgraded using the recommended method this thread here. Used TWRP, factory reset, installed the rom and correct 4.2 gapps. Reboot, worked great, fell in love. However, my cell data was nothing (no edge, 3g etc...) at first I thought it was the modem issue being discussed by some ATT users, I flashed a couple modems with absolutely no affect. Entered a whole array of ATT APN's. I fresh reinstalled CM10 using the same process, factory reset, 4.1 gaps. Now I can only get Edge data, again cycled through a whole array of APN's and modems. I reverted back to stock TouchWiz, nothing, still only edge. Somewhere in the mix my IMEI was erased and showed 0. I restored the correct IMEI and it displays correctly. Still only edge, installed CM10.1 again, antenna works, however only in edge, back to CM10, only edge. Now I'm running Unrooted, stock Touchwiz with the flash counter reset. Completely bone stock, no root, 4.1.1 ATT Touchwiz, fixed IMEI.
I'm at a loss guys, I've looked at similar "edge only" ATT threads and nothing helps.
Do you have the right network type set?
Did you see this thread?
It sounds like you lost your IMEI.
Settings > About Phone > Status > IMEI
Does it say '0' or 'unknown'?

Network type is LTE/GSM/WCDMA and doesn't allow me to change it. Well, I can select the whole option list but defaults back to it.

IMEI was corrupted however has been restored and is correct.
New symptom. Battery is all over the place, shows sporadic draining, recharging while not being plugged in. Phone will shut off when battery reaches 0. I remove the battery and boot the phone and it has substantially more. This last time it went back to 50%.

I was halfway thinking this. I have absolutely no clue how a flash could have caused this. It has been in a case its entire life and is so far without any significant impacts.

It's nearly impossible to cycle a battery in full now. I get maybe a few minutes of uptime, shows massive drain, reboot and it's back to normal only to recycle its process.
You should just Odin back to stock and start over.

Something similar happened to me. It didn't matter that I had restored what should be the proper IMEI (I hadn't backed it up first, only recovered it). I never could get the phone to do anything past EDGE network. I spent over an hour on the phone with AT&T support trying to get it to work, but couldn't.
That being said, did you make a backup of your IMEI before you began flashing, or did you try (like I did) to restore it after it had been corrupted? From what I know, if you have a backup from before it got corrupted, you should be ok. However, if the IMEI restore was done after it had been corrupted, then it may not ever work.
I eventually had to send my device back and get another one.

I recently lost my IMEI and didn't have a backup. Stupid move on my part. Now I know I need to do a backup before flashing ROMs. Anyways, I just got off the phone with AT&T and I will have a replacement here in 2-3 days. As I'm sure most of you know I'll have 10 days to send my old one back. Before I return it to stock and send it back I am willing to help in the research of this problem and a potential solution. I have done a lot of searching on this forum and I haven't found a solid solution. If anyone has some theories they would like to try you have a few days to let me know and I'll see if I can be of help.
Here is the history of the phone as best I can remember:
-Bought brand new December 7, 2012
-Updated to Jelly Bean 4.1.1 through Kies. No noticeable problems
-Rooted with Odin v3.04 Team Epic Root from Recovery with CWM v5.0.4 and Super User I kept the stock ROM for awhile before flashing anything else (Made a Nandroid of this ROM) No noticeable problems.
-Flashed Drew Garen's Serenity 1.2 No noticeable problems
-Flashed Pure Motive's Galaxy Mod Rls 14.1 No noticeable problems
-Flashed Pure Motive's Galaxy Mod Rls15 (This is where the problems began) Did a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik) like I always did. Rebooted after flash and noticed that my service sucked and my data wouldn't connect. I checked the APN's and they were wrong. Changed the APN's and the data would connect but I still had poor service. The phone wouldn't even make a call. It took me a little while to figure out that the IMEI was missing. It just read 0. After some searching I found a method of injecting the IMEI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804117 I used this method and put the original IMEI back in. Of course that didn't fix my data or poor service issues.
-Then I tried Peoplearmy's method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997 Actually I only did the make a backup part with QPST. I couldn't use the QCN Generator app because I only had Windows XP and the app requires Windows 7.
-I flashed my Nandroid backup. No help.
-Flashed Stock Jelly Bean I747UCDLK3. No help.
-Rooted the phone again, using the same method as above.
-At this point I became desperate (stupid) and tried a method for the GT-i9300: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30773406 This definitely didn't work and now I lost my serial number.
-Last night: Finally got access to a Windows 7 computer. Tried The SGS3 QCN Generator app. This time it worked and made a QCN. I injected it into the phone. No help. The QCN data I used was from after I lost IMEI and had manually put it in. I'm not sure if this is part of the problem of why it didn't work or not. The way I understood things it was supposed to repair the other parts of the QCN data. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
-I actually made an EFS backup on Galaxy Mod Rls14.1 using the Aroma installer. From what I've read this wouldn't necessarily help anyways because it doesn't contain all of the data needed to do a complete backup which is kind of beside the point because it's in tar format not in zip and it's a tiny file. 58 Bytes.
-I have installed Root Explorer and looked in the EFS folder and it doesn't contain any nv_data files.
I have already installed Triangle Away and cleared my flash counter.
So, if anybody who actually knows what they're doing (cause I obviously don't) would like to help, especially if my situation can be used to fix/prevent this from happening, and wants to use me and my I747 as a Guinea Pig let me know.
-Right as I was getting ready to post this I scrolled through settings>about device>status, and my correct Serial Number was back. What the ....? The only thing I've done to the phone is toggle airplane mode a few times, turn it off and on a few times, used wifi to get online, pulled the battery, booted up in CWM recovery. I haven't flashed anything to the phone. This is odd. Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Huh? There's a perfectly good solution and a fix. Not sure why itnwouldnt work for you. It works for everyone else.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997
I tried that. Exactly step by step. I still don't have reliable data. It either doesn't connect or stays on Edge. Also the service sucks. Everyone else around me will have 3-4 bars and I'll have 1.

Changing your modem can fix that.
I was thinking of that but I read on here somewhere that someone had tried it without results. I am willing to try it though. Which modem would you recommend? I already have i747UCLG1 modem on my memory card, ready to flash.

I can't really recommend a modem as they act completely different with your area/phone.
The only suggestion I can make is to use one from your carrier (AT&T). But it doesn't mean another one won't work better.
OK. I'll give that a shot and post the results in a few minutes.
Yeah I've used the IMEI injection tool to full effect. I have full data back. Using any other method to try to fix it would be just plain stupid. There is nothing else to test.

Did you get all the missing files back in your EFS folder?
Maybe I messed up somewhere. I don't have my full data or service back yet. I'm trying a few different modems to see what that does. It really doesn't matter if I get this fixed or not. I've already got a replacement on the way. I was just hoping that it could help somebody else out and I kinda like fixing things. The 2 modems I've tried so far aren't having any better results. I've got a couple more to try.
Would it be worth a try to redo the entire QPST, QCN Generator process?
I received my new Galaxy S3 today. That was Fast!! Lol Anyways, my research proved to be right. There's more going on than meets the eye when you loose and restore your IMEI. The original phone lost signal and would hardly ever connect to HSPA, only UMTS. The replacement phone automatically connected to HSPA as soon as I had it setup. I read on here somewhere that a lot of people were having the same problem when they re-injected their IMEI. I used the SGS3 QCN GEnerator app and still couldn't get good data connection. Actually I hardly had any connection at all. It would hardly pic up incoming calls and texts were sometimes an hour or more behind coming in. Flashing different modems didn't help either.
I'm going to do the proper backups this time before doing any flashing and if I have any more problems of this nature I'll have a good backup to fall back on.
i flashed synergy rom r14 after rooting the device initially and everything worked out fine, then kept getting the notification for the OTA for the 4.1.2 update...being that downloading OTA while rooted is a big no no (or always was before i came to the note) i decided to check synergy for updates to the rom and sure enough it was up to r47...so i downloaded and flashed and everything went smooth but after boot up it goes through the whole hand free activation and after saying the device is activated and then going through the PRL update and that checking out, it is supposed to do the soft reset and boot up and be good to go...well on second boot up it tries to activate the phone again (again saying Activation check and PRL update check) resulting in a boot loop that never stops....where did i go wrong...every phone ive had (touch pro 2, evo, evo 3d, nexus s) has always been a pretty straight forward root/flash process...so far this one seems to be a pain....any help?
Well clearly the problem wasn't worth the rooting process because you were able to flash Synergy w/o a problem. Hopefully you have a nandroid of stock rooted. I would pull the battery and try to restore your backup. Don't forget that for this phone Recovery access is via 3 buttons: power, home and volume (I forgot if it's up or down)

its up (down goes into odin) and sadly my stupidity and eagerness led me to not have a nandroid (yes feel free to leave the backlash, i deserve it), my question is...could it possibly be i a need to flash a different kernel? another idea i had was possibly calling sprint and seeing if the could walk me through the activation process (ive had them activate rooted phones before) i cant ever find the right button sequence (ie ##xxxxxx to get into the different menus) on the web

So right now you are unable to get a data connection on any rom you try? If that is the case you will probably want to look in the DEVELOPMENT section for a totally stock rom that you can ODIN.

Ok, I'm about to pull my hair out trying to fix this. About a month ago I flashed Scott's CleanROM ATT SE 1.5. Before that I was rooted, but on stock rom. I really just wanted to get all the ridiculous bloatware off my Note 2. Anyway, the flash worked fine, but afterwards my call signal descreased dramatically. It's not always terrible in certain places in my city, but I miss a lot of calls, sometimes at home it shows the circle with a line through it, showing no service at all. Many times, I will have 2 or 3 bars, but when I go to make the call I lose service altogther.
I reflashed the rom, flashed another rom and now am running stock rooted I317UCALK7. Nothing has changed with my call reception.
It wasn't like this before I flashed CleanRom. In doing my research I've found a few people with similar problems, but no real solution. I know that flashing a modem is worth a try, but I've not found any information that can point me to the right modem for my area. I think I'm using the same modem that came stock on my phone and worked in the beginning.
Any thoughts or experience with this?

Honestly... if your objective was to get all the ATT bloatware off your Note 2, you should flash CleanROM ACE 4.6.1 This one is built off the N7105XXDMB3 International base (not the ATT base which SE 1.5 is built from). I'm on ATT network and have been running the International CleanROM since December... absolutely love it.. great performance... never an issue. During install on 4.6.1, just select ATT as your carrier and select the ATT signal icons (if those are the ones you wish to utilize). Also during install, you can select (via Aroma installer) which Google and Samsung apps you want/ don't want to install. As far as the radio, you can flash modem separately (since it writes to it's own partition) and see which one works best for you. I am currently running the UCAMA4 ATT modem on the N7105XXDMB3 rom. Here's a link I posted regarding this modem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38056319&postcount=10
Again, if you objective is to minimize the ATT bloat, go with CleanROM ACE 4.6.1.... select ATT as your carrier... and try either the more recent MA4 ATT modem or the previous LK7 modem for signal reception. Hope this helps.

ok so now your running stock rooted, if you want to debloat search for mr robinson's debloater, its aroma installer as well as DoctorQMM has mentioned. if you are looking for modems, you have 3 options available lj2, lk7 and latest ma4. you said your phone is running lk7? if you have a custom recovery what im going to ask you will not matter. have you checked for system updates or tried flashing stock rooted deodexed ma4? i would try lj2 modem and see if my signal cleans up, since you mentioned it was fine before SE 1.5.

Well, I have flashed all three modems without any change. Seems very strange. Don't really know what to do.
I would Odin flash back to 100% stock...use triangle away from the market to your phone. .and not allow it to update via the ota update that will be pushed to your phone when you do.
See if this corrects the issue. If it doesn't. .take your phone in for service.
If it does fix it...re-root...download twrp...make a nand backup of your stock/rooted phone and save it to your external sd card.
Then you can go about de-bloating your phone.
Personally. ..I think you have had a bad download of cleanrom to start..and possibly a bad sim card afterwards.
It happens from time to time. .but by flashing back to stock. .resetting your counter to normal. .you can at least return your phone if necessary.

Thanks Mac, that's kind of what I was thinking. As I search these forums and the internet, it's difficult to pin down a source for my original stock rom. I was a newb at the beginning of this, so no, I did not make a backup of my original rom. If it wouldn't take too much time, would anyone be able to point me to a stock rom for my particular phone?

Ugh. Ok, so I got as far as using Odin, passing, but then got stuck on boot at the Samsung logo. Everything I read said to reboot into stock recovery, but I can't seem to do that. When I'm stuck, the only way I know of turning off the phone is to take the battery out. I put it back in and quickly press volume-up, home, and power. But it simply boots back to the Samsung logo and stays there with the logo pulsing.

Alright, I know I am on the home stretch, just one more hurdle. So, I have been working on getting the damn custom binary counter reset since last night. Right now the downloading screen lists, "Custom Binary Download: Yes (1 counts) Current Binary: Samsung Official System Status: Official"
I ran Triangle Away before I unrooted, multiple times in fact, I just can't ever get the counter to go to 0. I read somewhere, that if I am simply taking the phone into AT&T and not sending to to Samsung, then they don't actually check the binary counter. Anyway, I'm just really tired of dealing with this.

Pull your external sd card and leave it out. ...delete super user..busy box..your custom recovery... factory reset..let phone settle then power off..
Boot it back up.. and go through the first time set up..Don't Update It... see what it says then.
Then check your signal and data.See if the issue is resolved. You might not have to take it back. ..but I would just for peace of mind.

I ended up having to take my phone back to AT&T and get a new one. It seems that this is a problem with a certain batch of Note 2's. When I went in for repair, a girl came in with the exact problem with her Note 2. Anyway, they gave me a new phone and it has been fine ever since.
SMS, Calls and Network seems to shut down after 5 mins of the phone being booted up. I have to 'restart' the phone in order to get everything back working. Then after around 5 mins everything (sms, calls, network) stops working. so basically every time i need to use my phone i have to restart it.
This has been happening for about a month now. Been through 4 different ROMs, tried different kernels and about 5 different radios (including Restore Modem Flashable Zip).
Oddly, last week, when traveling across state for 4 hours in a car, the network worked mostly. SMS i had to restart a few times.
What can I do to try and fix this?
I have dropped it a few times. small cracks but everything else works fine.
The problem started to occur the very 1st time I flashed a radio modem that a ROM dev suggested on his thread. Not sure if this was just a coincidence. Like i said I tried different radios with no luck.
Any tips?

I'm assuming you don't have a nandroid of your previous setup. First thing (before trying any of our solutions) is to make one of your current setup. This will allow you to at least go back to a semi-working setup (emphasis on semi-).
Obvious first question would be to ask Sprint if they're doing network upgrades in your area. It doesn't sound like this is the issue, but it might be.
Secondly: what is your install procedure when installing a new ROM? Are you doing "dirty flashses" or clean flashes (factory reset)? I don't have any solutions for you, but the fact that you're having this issue across ROMs and across Radios tells me that there's something left over in your /system that's messing with your data connectivity. If you try wiping system (or the entire internal sdcard) before installing a new ROM, you might find that this fixes your problem. I'll admit that's the extreme solution, but if it's not a hardware problem, it'll most-likely will work.

If I remember correctly, after the problem started happening I did restore a previous backup but the issue kept happening.
I never dirty flash and usually wipe data about 3 times before flashing a new rom.
So you are saying wipe/format the entire internal SD card? what would be the safest process to do this?
Thanks for helping
Honestly it sounds like a firmware/modem issue, not rom related. I would flash via odin the lj7 firmware and start there. Also make sure you do the dial reset sequence ##72786# once you boot up.

I have tried the LJ7 quite a few times but always using CWM -- never helped. Forgive me but what is "dial reset sequence ##72786# once you boot up" and how do you do it?

In the phone dialer dial that specific sequence it forces a reset activation on the network. Go ahead and try that, you can do that right now. But let me explain flashing the firmware and modem via Odin is a much better procedure that through custom recovery. I would give that a shot before continuing to bang your head trying to figure it out. If you odin your firmware and still have the problem then you can eliminate that as a probable cause.

I agree with edfunkycold, that's your best bet. Mine "solution" was more of a way to eliminate if any /system files were interfering with the network, but I'd suggest ed's fix first.
My "final" solution would be to try flashing Sextape's stock (rooted) tar file. I'd flash the "restore" version, the link looks like this:
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

But again, that's more of a last-ditch thing. Try out the dial reset sequence the ed suggested.

Would flashing the "wipe data" version of the ROM clear out the /system/etc/firmware folder, and restore that to stock as well?
So my friends Boss' son tried to be all "l33t h4x3r" and mess with his S6(sm-g920p). First he ruined his EFS section of the phone, the Baseband is Unknown, no IMEI number, Software Version is Unknown, and his radio wasn't working. I think he then tried to do some crazy **** in ODIN, "No Clue he doesn't remember". Well i've never ran into a constant reboot issue with any Android phones i've owned. I've had bootloops but this is throwing me for a loop. I've tried:
Loading TWRP wiping everything and trying a Custom ROM
Using Odin to Recover back to Stock
Honestly im not sure whats up anymore or if his phone is even fixable at this time.

Hi, you certainly have a challenge there. It sounds like you need to restore both the partitions and the stock OS.
If the phone is a 32 GB model, please see the whole thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/help/operating-smg920p-t3263325
There is a PIT file linked at post 16, instructions for using it at post 22. Also a link for the latest stock TAR file.
Again, this would be for 32 GB model, but you want to flash first the PIT and then the TAR.
I think I may have done that already too but I'll look again once in home and see if maybe I did it in the wrong order. Thanks for the quick reply friend. ?
Well i did as instructed but Baseband is still unknown and it is still rebooting over and over :/

If he messed up the efs partition, like it's empty, without a backup. I'm pretty sure the phone is done.

I recommend he brings it to Sprint, after they "diagnose" it and declear its broken they should be able to replace it. Just make sure its as close to stock as possible that way it does not seem rooted.

That is about the only option left. There are other options to restore the efs (pretty much rebuild it from scratch) but that is not something an every day user can do. I had an efs issue on my S4. I was tinkering with things I shouldn't have, forget exactly what I was doing, it was on T-Mobile so I think I was trying to remove the data cap (was on prepaid). Was pretty much in the same boat as OP but was able to completely from scratch rebuild the stuff that belongs in the efs directory. Some stuff I never restored but didn't seem to affect the device.

This was many many years ago. What saved me was the fact that Notepad++ keeps a copy of the file you have open even when you close the program. I just had to remember what things needed to be reverted back and the edits undone. I guess I didn't really rebuild it from scratch lol.

Yeah sadly I have no idea how the efs is populated. The second instance I get a new phone, dd is done on the efs partition and created into a .img file.

Koop's firmware didn't work with my phone either. This version of it fixed mine for some reason. Try flashing it to yours
mediafire.com/download/c55xaeb7geq0i2d/G920PVPU3BOJ7_G920PSPT3BOJ7_SPR.zip
Now i got same issue i accidently restored efs and ah man ive tried every thing it reboots after 2 or 3 mins no matter what rom back up i have and i have efs and radio with all my back ups ive restored it also no luck. Guess im going to the sprint store tomorrow even after i flashed stock 6.0.1 i can get to about half way through wifi setup before it reboots no matter what 2-3 minutes phone reboots unless in twrp
Still no luck becareful and dont try to restore efs i suppose in twrp. Your phone may never stop rebooting ive flashed 2 different 6.0.1 builds one was the revo other was from sammobil both @koop1955 has them PB6 6.0.1 odin doesnt fix this.
YOYOYO
Well wtf or omg it completely died left it for a day. Now its working so far it hasnt rebooted in 30 mins LOL but dude sucks going to a phone with kitkat after using marshmallow and one of the fastest phones made for awhile. I did pull the sim card out and try it in a old boost maybe that reset something idk its working though. My problems were Rebooting constantly after 2-3 mins no matter what rom i had even stock.

BEcareful if u restore that efs. i backed up too but once in twrp. Now all i did was check restore efs by accident just tried restoring a renegade rom system, boot, and data. Tell you what i wont be rushing through crap and am fine with stock for awhile. Probably will still take the replacement when it comes its white the black one i got is too blue.

I've got a raw partition backup as well as one through TWRP. If you check md5/sha hashes for data integrity, and only install software instances specific to your device, aside from manually monkeyin around
Hey needless to say im researching full partition backups did you use a app by wanam partitions back up and restore? Or just simple adb commands. Last used adb on a moto e 2nd with success on unlocking. Once i got a new harddrive haven't needed it.

Theres similar issues happening on sprint note 5s as well and has a couple threads currently speaking about this problem. Strange strange. It happened to me after updating to mm and then rooting.
Well i did try the note rom right before and when i did hit restore efs it after wiping system data boot from moar MM rom phone rebooted for days then after few resets and odin flashes i let it die then a day later it worked.
Correct but have always preferred the 925p roms.
Well i helped another with the rebooting issue on any rom.
He tried everything then but let it die after battery died plug it in and bingo his worked to
IF CONSTANT REBOOTING.
LET THE BATTERY COMPLETLY DRAIN.
AFTER FLASHING STOCK.
