[Q] Stock ROM vs Custom ROM - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
What is better:
The official Samsung stock ROM or a custom ROM? And if second one, which? CM?
I ask this cause I heard that custom ROMs don't have that much support for the S-Pen. And no Multi-Window.

go for stock firmware. I was custom rom flash addict but after i got note2, i choose stock firmware+custom kernel

Me too. In the past devices i go for custom rom for it speed which varies alot from stock. But on the sgn2 i no longer need that as its fast as it is. I just keep to deodexed stock rom with mods which suits my needs.

+1 for me.. Stock deodexed with a custom kernel to get faster charging etc, I see no need to overclock with a device this fast :good:

But don't forget to disable all the lame bloatware too.

Could you link me to that custom kernel?
Are there any downsides to the custom kernel? Faster charging sounds nice.

That heavily depends on what you want. If you like some of the Samsung-specific functionality like S-Pen, Quick Glance and so on, you want to stay stock or flash one of the nice and debloated custom ROMS based on stock. My favorite is HyperNote, but I think it doesn't meet all your requirements.
If you want it even faster and like the Cyanogen-specific style, try any of these ROMS (hint: HyperDroid).
But there is no "need" to make the stock faster, as with this kind of RAM and CPU power, everything will just work fine. Best to make a backup before flashing and just trying some ROMs on your own. Have fun

Just get a deodexed stock rom and you will have everything you need.
What devs do is change the roms and repack it for flashing.
And in my case half of them aren't exactly what I need or are useless.
You can apply all those mods to yours without any data loss
And it's fun

I've not experienced any downsides, plus it patches the Exynos bug. You are trusting someone other than Samsung to control the internals of your device, but Im happy with that. I do get a random reboots now and then, like once every couple of days but I suspect its unrelated, and I do like to tinker with my device. Phones these days are actually computers and do trip up every now and then.
I use the Perseus kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927852
I really would't worry about it. If you don't find it useful you can just flash the stock kernel back, no halm done.

Stock rom and kernel are good. The note 2 doesn't need a rom to be more fast or stable.
But for me is important choose the application that runs on my phone as system app. So I need root privileges.
Then I found some roms that had stock things without a lot of S.h.i.t. that samsung have to put into our device for marketing purposes.
And so now for me is better a custom rom because you know what there is and what is running on at least.

Should be in the question section.
Stock custom rom.
It's usually updated to the latest Samsung version, can be modded and has loads of tweaks

Hi i use omega v10 with redpill kernal and every thing works fine battery live is amazing and the rom still has all stock feutures

Understanding roms after the ics update

OK.. So every phone i have ever owned i have rooted, Kernels, anything and everything.
But here is my problem.. I have recently updated (manually) to the new ICS on my epic 4g touch.
I have tried all the roms pre this release and never had 100% luck with any so normally always ran stock os plus root.
I want to know if A) there are new roms post this recent update, B) if i root to another pre-existing rom is it going to mess it all up again.
Basically i want like CM10 out or something. Something made specifically for how the phone is now...
Any suggestions?? Im tired of stock. I want to customize!!! :crying:
Depends how custom you want to go. If you want to flash custom theme and modz, you must go with a deodexd ROM.
But if you want AOSP-ish look, agat has a very good stable and themed FF18 ROM he calls tFF18. It has a simple look, much different than stock tho, but it's built with a custom kernel and based off Samsung, not CM9 or 10
not sure if that helps.

It does help!. So if i get this right... ANY deodexed rom or another option is tFF18. And these are both based off our current rooms so that EVERYTHING WORKS

Are there any other name brand roms out there i can look into?
Anything t look into specific??? As far as AOSP roms go, ive tried them in the past, but are you saying their newer version ones are friendly to the latest update?

Yes everything works. tFF18 is odex, so you can't change much of the ROM but it works incredibly smooth and stable. Also, practically all DEODEX'd ROMs have the hacked sprint hot spot for tethering. Stock and odex roms require the Wifi Tether app which is easily found by googling "wifi tether apk"

Aosp is nice and light weight, makes it super snappy, but you lose a couple convenient features from samsungs touch wiz UI.. My main gripe with going aosp/aokp is that my camera doesn't perform as well, where IMO Samsung did a nice job with the software.

[Q] I rooted. Now What?

I've rooted my phone plenty of times and flashed CM 10. I find myself going back to stock every time. I rooted again. So now what? Sorry for asking such an annoying question. I'm just at a loss with this. I need some direction.
What exactly is your question? If you don't know why you rooted maybe you shouldn't be rooting in the first place. You don't root just for roms, root is administrator access to the system. It allows you to access the system files usually blocked to the end user. Roms are just custom OS's chosen by the user and their tastes/preferences/requirements. You should probably do some more reading so you know what it is you're doing before you break your phone.
I like to break stuff!

if you find yourself constantly going back to stock, you should check out the custom TouchWiz ROMs. these will give you the stock experience modified for speed, power and battery savings. plus the fact that they are fully customizable.
just go to the 2 different Android development threads for this phone, you will find everything you need and more.

Either of these roms you can make your way. Plenty of options to give you the look and feel you want. Support is amazing for these two as well.
+1 for milky!
Or if you don't want to over-do your phone for themed stock JB styles or AOSP.
Then try shooting for a custom kernel and optimizing it for better performance.
Or better yet, find a stock optimized kernel and it'll be all good OR BETTER THEN THAT....

Both the above listed roms do have an optimized stock kernel with tweaks for optimization.
I don't root just to say "I'm a hacker" I have a decent amount of knowledge on what root access is. It is my fault for wording my question like I did. I keep going back to stock because I can't set my phone up the way I'd like. Also, for those who are developers...how do you do it? Developing seemed much more easier on Google's Nexus Line.

Best kernel+ROM combo for my AT&T Galaxy S3

Recently i got the AT&T SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 I747 STOCK JELLY BEAN ON 4.1.1 from GALASXY S2 SKYROCKET (at&t) also but i need the best combo (kernel+ROM) but its hard to find one
here is what am looking for:-
- good, stable DATA/MOBILE NETWORK CONNECTION (MUST HAVE) IMPORTANT
- bloatware free
- fast/overclocking
- easy/not too complex that will fup my phone
- anything that i have not mentioned is relevant too
- other great features like Bravia engine, goo manager, extra features that make it more awsome
- cyanogenmod stable qualities (bug free) sleek, smooth, fast UI and transitions
any kind of idea is valid, open to every suggestion
If you are looking for a touchwiz ROM, go try S3Rx. If you are looking for a pure android based ROM, go for Task's AOKP. I think those are some of if not the best Roms of their kind.

That's for you to experiment and decide not everyone has the same experience on a rom.
Just make a backup of your current setup and start flashing away.
Trial and error.
I may be new here but I know enough, To tell you no one is going to answer your question. A Rom that works for one person is not necessarily the same Rom that will work for another. Flashing Rom's is about hopefully stability, if your lucky speed and battery life, but most importantly about customization. I just started flashing Roms and am still looking for the one I want. I'm sure as soon as I find it a new release will come out and I will get to start over again. As for Kernels I am not comfortable enough to delve into that yet...Good luck...

Best S3, non touchwiz ROM I have found is SlimBean. Not as flashy as some but rock solid/stable with the best battery life I have found so far. Like CM, it is backed by team of devs versus some roms that just have chefs that mix/match/blend features together.
i have been on that PATH as in trying different ROMS but once i tried several i completely fup my DATA/mobile network, i would text and call but my internet (not to be confused with WIFI) stopped working and yu know as a tech savvy guy yu gotta try everything little trick yu know to fix it but there was nothing
forced to use wifi until the day i bought the AT&T S3 and i have my data internet connection working again
i need a ROM that doesnt leave me with no DATA CONNECTION
restoring from nandroid backups helps and sometimes it might not work , other than CM which other ROMS THAT CAN KEEP UP WITH MY DATA CONNECTION

Glad to here it. I have not been brave enough to get into kernel flashing yet. Can you tell me was it a simple flash? How do you revert back to a stock kernel? I here there is a lot of tweaking to do with some kernels? Was Ziggy's pre-set?

You just flash it the same way you do with a ROM. Remember you wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing the kernel and if you dirty flash roms, you have to reflash the kernel each time because the stock kernel overwrites it. You revert back to stock kernel by flashing the ROM again or finding the kernel zip and flashing it separately. You can undervolt and overclock with a different kernel that allows it.

ROM recommendations

Hi all,
I just bought a galaxy note 8 and rooted it. I installed the Cyanogenmod rom but dont really like it.
I do like that it is a lot faster than the stock software.
Can anyone recommend a ROM on here to try. I see there are lots available but dont know which one to go for. If anyone has one of the roms from here and loves it, please let me know so i can try it.
Also, now the device is rooted, i can just wipe and install ROMs using the clockwork recovery program right?
I've installed the CivZ-FLEX-BEAM-REV3.1 ROM now. Much smoother and looks more like the stock rom

Cosign. It's in my opinion the best performing ROM for my needs.
the number of ROMs is not that big, go and check for yourself - generally the "best ROM" threads are usually closed by the mods, rather sooner than later

Although the options are not in abundance I also would recommend CivZ-FLEX-BEAM-REV3.1 ROM I think it's the best for the note 8 & IMO one of my fav jellybean ROMs overall.

Looking for mostly stock ROM

I am coming from the Note 2 and on that phone I used RWilcos Mostly Stock ROM which is basically just the stock ROM with small tweaks, root, bloatware removed etc.
It did not have any bugs that effected the functionality which I've seen with other ROMs (CM etc).
Does anyone have a recommendation for a 100% functional stable ROM almost that won't remove all the great Note features but still have the added features and performance, battery life , root etc of the custom ROMs?
Thanks for any help.

First of all, is the phone new and already updated to stock 5.1.1?
If so you have a locked bootloader (but still have options) .
If you have 5.0.1 or older version your in luck.

Best of the best by @tx_dbs_tx.
CM and ports require more attention whether it be developer, user or both.
Stock-like TW narrows it down for you. IMO, the two most active and capable developers in TW for Sprint Note 4 are tx_dbs_tx and freeza. They both have released very stock and also modified ROMs. Then there's OBAR that got a lot testing and users as well to make sure the bugs were squashed; still has support and also user community support.
If you don't want to get into kernel tweaking but want something with default and optimization out of the box- better than stock, consider freeza's Beastmode kernel or the newer Rage kernel that is integrated in Note 4our ROM (Don't be put off by the beta; it's stable but more customization is expected). Otherwise, take your pick and run the included kernel or choose another custom Android 5.1.1 kernel like AEL or Emotion for Sprint Note 4.
Personally, I prefer freeza's kernel. I've posted some battery stats in freeza's Beastmode kernel and Note 4our ROM threads.
I couldn't narrow it any further than this. You'd have to decide yourself or try as many as you like to make a definitive decision. Lots of choices and opinions vary; that's a good thing.

Which one of freeza's kernels gives better battery? Have you compared them to AEL? I'm using AEL 6.2,and while it has decent battery, it lags a bit.

IMO, they're equal on battery.
Rage may be slightly better on multitasking but there's extra scripts in play with the integrated ROM.
No lag but I've ran freeza kernels since Beastmode because they're close to stock with no setup to tweak.
Prior to that, I preferred stock kernel but thanks to Samsung, can't run it with root anymore. No recent compare to AEL or Emotion.
